Donnie means business!

by knicksdefense on February 17, 2010

Knick trade deadline casualty #1 has been completed.

Darko out.

Brian Cardinale in.

This is strictly for cap space, but let’s face it, Darko didn’t play here, so if Brian gets any burn, it would be an improvment.

Go to work Donnie!

We have a REAL GM in command at 2 Penn Plaza.

Lookout Chicago!

Looks like the Knicks are working with the Kings to make a three-team deal to get T-Mac. T-Mac does not want any part of going to Sac-Town so Donnie should be able to make this work. I don’t think Jordan Hill is the hold up in the T-Mac deal. I think it is more that no team wants any part of taking Jeffries’ contract and then losing two million in cash because of that stupid trade kicker in his contract. That’s a big burden for teams that are all losing money fast in this league.

The time to judge Donnie Walsh is fast-approaching. Can he get rid of Jeffries’ toxic contract? In reality, that’s the only reason he was brought here. Get cap-space.

Looks like the Kings and Rockets have agreed to a deal. Here are the details:

Kevin Martin, Kenny Thomas, Hilton Armstrong and Sergio Rodriguez to the Rockets for McGrady, Carl Landry, Joey Dorsey and cash.

Now the Knicks are feverishly looking to get involved. It shouldn’t be too hard since McGrady would be a 30 game rental for the Kings so they shdn’t mind giving him up for youth like Jordan Hill. Bye Jordan

Well fellas….

Donnie stiffened his stance on lottery protection with Houston once Chicago dropped out….and Houston GM Daryl Morey pulled a rabbit out of his hat and got a better deal from Sacto.

This *backfire* may actually work in our favor, as Sacto could probably use $3M of Dolan’s money as much as any team.

Early word is that the Kings want to work David Lee into this trade, but Lee’s agent has already put word out that Lee will veto that trade. =(

Worst case, Kings buy out T-Mac and he comes to NY as a minimum salary guy to steal shots from Chandler & Gallo for the rest of the season, auditioning for an offseason contract. DO. NOT. WANT.

Larry Brown also one-upped Walsh by tossing in a protected first rounder to pry Ty Thomas off the Bulls. While Walsh dithers, other teams are pouncing.

Donnie Walsh’s entire tenure here is balancing on a tightrope….if we wait till 2011 to make moves, than he has been a spectacular failure. Anyone coulda cap-managed for a 2011 TWO-MAX scenario….and we coulda kept Zbo & Jamal around to keep us competitive in the meantime.

D’Antoni’s continued mentioning of “energy” rather than “defense” bugs the shit outta me. i know it’s not 1994 anymore – and won’t be again – but damn he has to make more of an effort to connect with the Knicks fanbase.

It’ll be a bit of a nerve racking next few hours, fellas…..let’s hope Donnie pulls off an 11th hour miracle!

LGK!!! Keep tha noize TURNED UP!!!

alan Hahn is reporting on twitter that the deal is basially done bet. hou, sac and NYK.
jeffries gone and we keep Hill and get Tmac plus Sergio Rod….
if this is accurate DW came through…

5 PaulNoize February 18, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Marc Stein just reported that three-way deal with Knicks is done — TMac to Knicks, Hughes to Sac, Jeffries to Hou with 2012 first and right to swap in 2011. Landry, Dorsey to Sac, Martin to Hou, no word on Sergio. Looks like Hill stays in NY.

6 PaulNoize February 18, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Sorry, Saipan….things are very fluid.

The Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks have agreed to terms that will expand the Houston-Sacramento deal into a three-way trade that lands Tracy McGrady with the Knicks, according to NBA front-office sources.

The Knicks will acquire McGrady and Sergio Rodriguez from Sacramento, sources said.

The Rockets get Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries from New York and will have the right to swap first-round picks with New York in 2011 as well as take on New York’s 2012 first-round pick.

Sacramento obtains Houston’s Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey and New York’s Larry Hughes.

i am OK exchanging Jordan Hill for S-Rod. Duhon has permanently lost his mojo, and may be plying his trade in Israel or Turkey in a few months if he doesn’t aggressively address his game.

9 saipanknickster February 18, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I never really saw Serge play but I agree with duhon and how he’s been playing we gotta try something different

Hollinger’s take on S-Rod:

2008-09 season: A full-court point guard on a half-court team, Rodriguez was a fish out of water in Portland and vented his frustrations in the middle of last season. That didn’t get him very far, though — he averaged only 15 minutes a game.

But the number to look at is the 37.2 under assist ratio. Even playing in the worst possible system for his skills, he managed to post the league’s eighth-best mark in that category and finished 13th in pure point rating. Rodriguez chipped in a strong rebound rate as well, and though he shot poorly (39.2 percent) and struggled to make 3s, he did improve his horrid free-throw rate from the previous season.

Scouting report: Rodriguez is tall for a point guard and quick for any position, but he’s a poor defensive player nonetheless. The Blazers frequently yanked him for defensive errors, including wandering off his man, conceding spot-up jumpers, and taking bad fouls on the perimeter; his rate of nearly one foul every nine minutes was the fifth highest among point guards.

Offensively, he has shown flashes of brilliance. Not only does he have an outstanding burst going to his right and can see the floor extremely well, he likes to push the ball in transition and feed others for layups and dunks. While he can get out of control and start firing the ball all over the gym (he was 65th in turnover rate out of 69 point guards), he’s one of the rare players who can consistently create shots for others without needing many for himself.

Rodriguez is a poor perimeter shooter and is no great shakes from close range either, but he finally hit the 50 percent plateau in the immediate basket area last season and began drawing fouls with more regularity. Since he achieved all these numbers in a system that seems diametrically opposed to his skill set, it’s possible he could improve on them significantly in a different setting.

2009-10 outlook: Portland traded Rodriguez to Sacramento in the offseason, placing him on an up-tempo team that seems largely devoid of other talented passers. While it’s unclear whether he’ll start or come off the bench, the potential for a breakout season is certainly here. He is 23 and has enough experience under his belt to know the league, but now he’ll have the freedom to push the ball and generate offense without the threat of a quick hook.

It’s doubtful he’ll shoot much higher than 40 percent and he may not score much more than a dozen points per 40 minutes, but Rodriguez will post one of the highest assist rates in basketball and could end up on the league leaderboard if he starts.

Thanks PaulN..that is good info seems as though Dantoni’s system may be a good fit based on Hollinger’s opinion of Sergio..That was helpful
I guess practice on Friday will be long if you factor in the meet n greet session that is sure to precede and on court work.

12 knicksdefense February 18, 2010 at 2:47 pm

very happy day for knicks fans everywhere!!!!!!!!

13 saipanknickster February 18, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Yes indeed. They are gonna have to run more now.
I guess Wil is gonna play the four spot now. How long will it be before Duhon is officially the back-up?

KD you excited about the game on Saturday? I wonder if all those guys will make it here and pass the physicals by then?

14 KD February 18, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Al Harrington is still on the knicks. I thought Mike D’Antoni thought Harrington was stunting Danilo’s development?

Wonder if the salaries match up to trade Al for Ty Thomas. Probably not. Ty Thomas is probably still on his rookie contract.

We got further under the cap, but all I heard today was that LeBron was going to the Nets. Do people really think LeBron is going to play in Newark for two years while the Brooklyn building may or may not ever be built?

I think the Knicks take precedence over the Nets if both teams are under the cap. Can’t read D-Wade’s mind, can’t read LeBron’s mind, but I think NYK is priority #1.

15 saipanknickster February 18, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Yeah i was surprised AL H is still around. I guess he will be renounced, this summer. They are even smaller now without JarJeff.

Thomas supposedly went to Charlotte right?

All the pundits, dont really know what’s gonna happen all of them are paid to talk and many just ramble to be contrary or to drum up responses.
I believe LBJ will definitely consider NY… with that said I am sure Donnie and Co. have a plan B.. so we will see

I think they HAD to do this…

Thank you paulnoize, pc and saipanknickster for blogging with us on this special day. I really feel today was a turning point for our knicks squad. Going to take robin out to dinner when she gets home from work to celebrate the tmac trade. Sergio too, good let’s see what they can do we have 29 games to beat out these bottom feeders for a playoff spot. Maybe we’ll see nate in the first round of the playoffs.

17 saipanknickster February 18, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Definitely a day to celebrate….hope you 2 enjoyed the nite out…njoy saturdays game

Quick hits:

1) Any team LeBron comes to will play defense, no matter who the coach is. Doc Rivers didn’t establish the defensive mentality in Beantown – Garnett did. And the importance of the games themselves lend more urgency & gravitas when your’e a contender rather than a pretender.

2) Donnie did a good job executing what he was brought in here to do….sweep the decks clean. At the very least he will be able to hand a clean slate to a new regime, something that Layden, Isiah & Walsh would have KILLED for.

3) There’s no backdoor deal. This is just a balls of steel roll of the dice. It will most likely fail, but still has far more possibility to bring us a chip than hanging onto Isiah’s crowd & drafting Jennings and Brooke.

4) Lee, Harrington, Duhon, S-Rod & T-Mac have zero chance of being here next season.

5) I am happy to see Nate go to Boston, he has all the physical tools to be an average defender. The players AND coaches AND game importance will all conspire to force him to play the best defense of his life….it’s on Nate to rise to this challenge. After all the grief i have given him for his disinterest in playing “D”, i’d like to see him “man up” and better himself.

6) Goodbye, Marcus Landry…you filled the “hungry glue guy at the end of the bench” role quite well. Good luck to ya!

7) i would like to see D’Antoni play a very big lineup moving forward:

PG: T-Mac
SG: Chandler
SF: Gallo
PF: Harrington
C : Lee

Bender, S-Rod & Douglass off the bench. Without JJ we’re gonna need to play a lot more zone & switching – but our length will cause some problems.
