We need this one…

by knicksdefense on January 31, 2010

All the Knicks fans I’ve been speaking to lately are losing faith.
We’ve been losing in January, Lee got snubbed from the all-star team, and LeBron isn’t coming.
I still have hope for this year’s playoffs goal.
Was December just a fluke like when the Knicks won games in January with Larry Brown?
I say go back to basics. Sit Nate and play Larry Hughes and tighten up the rotation again.

We are not playing well. I attribute our inability to win game solely to not having a point guard. The league is pick and roll heavy and therefore it is all about point guards. They are everywhere nowadays. Billups, Parker, Kidd, Paul, Rondo, Rose, Nelson, D. Williams, Nash, (i am sure I am missing ppl). All of these teams are somewhat competitive. You need a PG nowadays. Stinks we don’t have one.

At first glance we run a great pick and roll. Watching Lee dunk balls is one thing but the other half of our pick and roll with Duhon can’t get it done. When he comes off screens and gets in the key it is pure instinct that draws defenders to him and he passes it to Lee. This equals an easy score. But the other two scenarios on a pick and roll never equal a basket for Duhon. Those are as follows: (1) the guard goes under the screen and lets Duhon shoot a jumper – he never makes it; and (2) the wiser big man defenders do not let instincts take over, they gameplan for Duhon and let him get as close to the basket as possible and challenge him to make a play against their delayed defense – he never does because he’s not a threat as a crafty passer (skip passing and such) nor can he make consistent floaters or lefty layups. Passing it to Lee is the easy part – all NBA players can execute that part of the pick and roll. Its the aforementioned parts of the play that define top PGs from mediocre, from bad.

That leaves us in a crappy spot. Playing this bad makes free agents think we’re toxic. Lebron has made it clear that he wants to play for someone who can win a championship. He sets trends and if the other big free agents stick to that same logic, the Knicks may struggle to get a big name free agent to help improve this team next year. D’Antoni keeps saying that its “tricky” and he’s exactly right. His team can’t jeopardize its only asset (cap space) but they desperately need to make a move because the current formula isn’t enough.

Maybe our top priority is a PG to play alongside whatever ONE free agent we can lure here for max dollars. Maybe a PG to play with Joe Johnson and David Lee. Who knows….sucks waiting though.
