Son of a Gun-ner!

by knicksdefense on August 29, 2008

Patrick Ewing, Jr is a Knick.

Frederick Weis, the worst draft pick in this generation of Knicks basketball that I am aware of, is finally gone.

Today is a good day.

Thanks to Paulnoize for breaking it here on Knicksdefense in the last post.

I have not seen very much of Ew2′s game, but for those of you that have, is he any better than Malik Rose? If so, we’ll take him.

This sort of reminds me of when Allan Houston announced that comeback at this time last season. There were defenders that considered it nothing more than a publicity stunt, and for all intensive purposes they were right. Who knows if this latest move will result in a spike in season ticket sales. If they really wanted my money all they had to do was get the OG Ewing and Oakley on that bench as assistants to teach Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph how to play Knick basketball.

Imagine if Houston makes his second comeback attempt with the Knicks? Maybe if we could have sent Zbo packing earlier this summer we could have had Camby back as well. Houston, Camby, Ewing, throw in a Spree and a JVG and you’ve got nostalgia, if not another lottery team…

But I say give the kid a chance, if he at least has the heart and hustle that his father brought to the basketball court every night for 15 years, he may earn a spot on this roster ahead of career underachievers such as Jerome James.

Oh, did you guys hear? I heard Marbury is buying a jet of some kind. Whatever.

Goodbye Freddy… We should have drafted Artest, but you already knew that, didn’t you?

Jacked this clip from Berman’s. Enjoy.

Defender,

What do you guys think of this trade?

Whaddup Cooley

Your efervescent energy is always refreshing.

I agree with Lives that there will plenty of interesting stories out there this year in the NBA. I’m a closet Trailblazer fan so I might have something to cheer about. But as always as a 1st and foremost Knicksfan I will probrably be cheering harder for progress than for victor at this stage in the 3rd Knicks regime.

Lives

I will probrbably ease my way back into my old past time with a mixture of pencil colored pencils, and pastels.

Got start somewhere. Don’t expect Masterpieces off the bat but you’ll get plenty to laugh at, I can insure you that my mind is very adept at using the visual to represent the percieved an actual.

OBTW would you suggest some sort of a disclaimer? Perhaps to make it clear that what goes up is really cyber “blogging” not reporting etc etc! Don’t want to be percieved as being malicious when I’m merely being interpretive.

Have fun with the family.

You do know I’m a Jersey man as well?

Tman,

Talent-wise,yes we are getting the worst of the deal. You have to believe in Walsh’s 2010 Dream to make sense of this trade.OR,you have to believe that the Curry/Z-bo experiment just doesn’t work.

I have no idea what to expect from Milicic or Jaric.I guess the thinking is to allow their(or only Milicic’s)contract to expire before making a run at LBJ.

O&B,

I had no idea that you were a “Lives In New Jersey” family member. Give me a ring. I think you have my e-mail. You might be close enough to visit for a BBQue we’re thinking about having in late September. There might be a couple other fellow bloggers there. Let me know.

Anyone interested in meeting O&B in New Jersey on a September Weekend, let me know.

Peace and Love.

KD, I like the present identification and time stamp. Thanks to you and your team for working on it.

You know DLT, I have nothing against Walsh per se, but I have little faith in him because I believe he was nothing more than a Stern publicity plant which for me was confirmed by the appointment of his marketing guy as the President. If this was meant to turn us into a winner, I would be happy, but it seems to me to be marketing BS. That does not make me happy.

The D’Antoni move I can support, but that’s because I am not expecting a championship. For now, I just want some wins and D’Antoni is a winner.

I’m still amazed at how much credit people want to give Larry Brown. He’s a phony. Even the Pistons owner, who just entered the Hall, says so. The only reason he kept him around was because he won. But he sucks. He ruined the Olympic team with his “play the right way” garbage. UGGGGGGGH. That was the beginning of the end for Isiah.

DLT, I am waiting for Walsh to make a decent move. He hasn’t made one yet. Duhon? Please. Roberson? O.k. nut. . .

At least September-October will give us a lot to post and comment about.

THIS JUST IN:WALSH CONFIRMS TRADE TALKS.

From The Daily News:

“Donnie Walsh is on the verge of correcting one of Isiah Thomas’ biggest financial mistakes.

Walsh, the Knicks president, confirmed Saturday that the Knicks are in talks with the Memphis Grizzlies about a possible deal for Zach Randolph, the veteran power forward who doesn’t fit into Mike D’Antoni’s up-tempo offense.

“There is no deal,” Walsh said over the telephone early Saturday. “We’ve spoken to Memphis but there is nothing happening so far.”

A source close to the negotiations said that a trade is unlikely to take place before Monday. Walsh refused to comment on a report in Memphis Commercial Appeal that claims the Knicks would be required to pick up part of the deferred payments Randolph is owed over the final three years of his contract that will pay him $48 million.

For removing Randolph’s bloated salary from their payroll, the Knicks would be required to take back power forward Darko Milicic and point guard Marko Jaric, fellow countrymen from Serbia. Milicic, who flopped in Detroit after being the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft right after LeBron James and before Carmelo Anthony, is scheduled to make $14.5 million over the next two years. Jaric will earn $21 million over the next three years.

If the Knicks finalize the deal that could conceivably have three European-born players on their roster next season, including first round pick Danilo Gallinari from Italy. In recent years, Thomas has been reluctant to tap into the European market while D’Antoni’s teams with the Phoenix Suns featured several international players.

Walsh has been actively trying to trade Randolph and nearly had a deal with the Clippers in July. It is still unclear why Walsh passed on a trade that simply would have involved moving Randolph and his contract to Los Angeles without having to receive a player in return. Once Walsh passed, the Nuggets stepped in and traded Marcus Camby to the Clippers.

Randolph had a strong year statistically with the Knicks, averaging 17.6 points and 10.3 rebounds. However, his presence in the low post rendered C Eddy Curry useless and the Knicks feel that Curry is more valuable to the club.

If and when the Randolph deal is made that would leave the Knicks with 17 players under contract, two over the maximum. There is still the possibility that Stephon Marbury will be released at some point. Walsh declined to comment on Marbury’s status and would only say that the veteran point guard is “in the best shape of his life” which is not unlike the off-season reports Isiah Thomas always “

Lives,

I agree,Walsh hasn’t done anything to write home about. But,as I said in an eariler blog page:What does he have to work with?

Lives,I’m not a big Walsh fan yet,but our Knicks don’t have players most team want.Trading Zach’s 48 million/3 years is not easy for a player who plays no defense and doesn’t share the ball well.

He only had the MLE to work with, which he used on Duhon.Which I will agree he paid too much for him.I guess this was his insurance to dump Steph.

Who could Walsh trade beside our young talent(Lee,Chandler,N8)which would be a mistake.

no team wants

Marbury:21million(drama)
Q Rich:8 million (bad back)
James:6 million (hasn’t done anything)
Jefferies: 6 million (overpaid,for a 10th man)
Rose:7 million(overpaid locker room leader)
Curry:8 million (no rebounds,no defense)

neither player is close to being an All-Star and all play on a losing team.

So,I ask again,What can he do?What moves can he make?

10 D L T Knicks September 6, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Lives,

….And I agree,Walsh is David Stern’s “clean up the Knicks” man.

11 Orange and Blue September 6, 2008 at 11:11 pm

Lives

Let me know when you plan to barbecue. I believe the weekend of the 27 I will attend a concert but otherwise I’m good.

DLT

You Forget that Walsh could have bought players in the late 1st and early 2nd round. Didn’t do that.

Also

The Daily News article assumes that the original version of the Knicks Clippers trade talks regarding Zach Randolph, with Z-Bo heading to Clipperville for cap relief and nothing to little more, was the correct version of events. Also note that the article describes Jarric as a point gaurd. I thought he was a 2/3. The article spoke of D’antoni’s work with international players- Brasilian and Canadian, as an indication of the teams openess to European players. Article also continues the speculation that marbury will be dumped. Alot of grasping at straws and some slights on Walsh, assuming the initial version of the clippers trade was true, suggest that the News has still an ax to grind with some team, organization etc etc.

O&B,

I understand(or maybe the media is helping him save face)that Walsh tried to obtain late first and second round picks to get Ewing Jr and others.

From N.Y.Post,August 29,2008

“Knicks president Donnie Walsh raved about Ewing Jr. on draft night, praising his defense, and admitted he was trying to obtain a late first-round pick or second-round pick to draft him. However, despite his athleticism, he is a poor offensive player and not much of a shooter.

“I like him a lot,” Walsh said after the draft. “We were trying to get picks in the first round and he would’ve been one of the guys in my mind. I think he could be a good addition to an NBA team because he’s a glue guy.”

Now,O&B,I don’t know what stopped him from acquiring those picks or what/who did he offer.
