Apparently MSG announcer Gus Johnson’s contract expired along with Isiah Thomas’ tenure as coach and president of the New York Knicks as the 2007-2008 season came to its lackluster, depressing end.
MSG and Mr. Johnson are now in discussions for a new contract. I wonder if emperor Dolan will make another mistake and let Johnson go, sort of like the mistake Dolan made when he let Marv Albert go over stating the ugly truth during the Layden era.
As a Knicks fan, I for one would like to see Gus to stay. I’d like to see/hear some Knicks games with Gus calling the action with the Knicks playing exciting, winning basketball. That’s when Gus is at his best. I realize that isn’t happening consistently any time soon, but a fan can dream, can’t he?
If it ends up being Mike Breen and Kenny Smith, I’ll have to order one of those Starbucks Doppios at halftime just to stay awake. Kenny Smith kind of sucks as an MSG announcer, despite being a top-notch NBA analyst on Inside the NBA.
Coffee for the sake of basketball. Who knows? It worked for Darrell Armstrong for years.
I don’t know why MSG is even trying to play hardball with Gus considering the way they constantly throw money at much less talented individuals. Gus frequently calls games for college basketball, baseball, I’ve even heard Gus called some controversial (or prepackaged depending on who you ask) mixed martial arts on CBS when Kimbo Slice came to Newark’s Prudential Center earlier this year.
