Coach K talking up Duhon as a league leader this season

July 11, 2008 – 12:15 pm
“I think he’ll flourish,” said Mike Krzyzewski, who coached Duhon for four years at Duke. “My feeling is he’ll be one of the leaders in the league in assists in Mike’s system. That will make everybody better.”

“I think he’s the kind of guy that the New York Knicks always had,” Walsh said. “A guy that just goes out, plays hard, fits in with the team, has a role to play, will defend. Those are the kind of players we’d like to see on this team.”

So Donnie, care to elaborate as to which players you’d like to see leave this team?

I don’t know about you, but to lead the league in assists implies to me that you are a starting point guard.

  2. according to sports illustrated, walsh just turned down a deal the clippers offered for zach randolph. all the knicks were going to get was cap relief, and apparently that was not enough for mr. walsh to give up zbo.

  3. I think the Knicks were right in not giving Zach away. Although we suck and everyone on our team sucks - Zach is technically our best player. You absolutely cannot give your best player away just because everyone knows our strategy is to get Lebron in 2010.

Smart move. If they really want Zach, they can give us next years protected first round pick and a throw in

I don’t think we should just give him away.We need players.Zach is a player…well not on the defensive side, but a player.

    @KnicksD

Is there an article on that Zach propose trade you can share?

Also,I’m excited for the Knicks and Duhon. He does have a lot of mouths to feed and should get 7-11 assist a game.

  6. The Article on Randolph to LAC

Knicks unwilling to trade Randolph to Clippers in salary dump

The Knicks have rejected a proposal from the Clippers to trade power forward Zach Randolph, league sources told SI.com.

Terms of any proposal were not known, but the Clippers have enough salary-cap space to accept Randolph’s contract without having to give the Knicks equal salaries in return. The Clippers, seeking to replace the departed Elton Brand, were trying to take Randolph off the Knicks’ hands while offering little more than cap relief to New York, the sources said. Randolph will make $14.7 million next season, and he has three years and $48 million left on his contract.

While the Knicks are known to be interested in clearing cap space by 2010 to make a run at LeBron James or other potential free agents, the sources said New York wanted more than simple cap relief in exchange for Randolph. The Knicks appear to believe that Randolph will provide a highly productive season under new coach Mike D’Antoni, which could raise his value much higher than it is today. That’s why the Knicks were not interested in nearly giving away Randolph’s contract, according to the sources…SI.COM

  7. Like I said on every blog before. Just to trade a big contract for the sak of trading it is stupid. And in a way such a move puts 2010 on a pedestal above that of common sense moves that the organzation will need to make to transition itself into a viable market for th overlylauded 2010 free agent class.

Again to that end all the hullabaloo about tradig Z-Bo b/c of his contract on Lee b/c he will cost too much to resign better yield some servicable replacement players at the 4 spot Those replacements whether had at the time of the trade or in a subsequent trade better board at least as well as those two players. Becuase if we don’t the Knicks will have an engine for [D]‘anotni’s offense but it will not have the spark plugs that secure the rebounds that produce the overly discussed fast break!

  8. I’m glad they didn’t ditch Zach for merely a 2nd rounder! I understand the need to part ways w/ him but who in their right mind gets rid of a 20-10 guy for a 2nd rounder ? The other problem is what is left on the Clips now that is worth getting ? Mobley ? pass. Thomas ? no 2nd run for a guy who shows up only in a contract year. I’d take Gordon but we all know that aint happenin’. I’m hoping Walsh might be able to include another team and maybe expand this trade. Worst comes to worst, we at least have to get a 1st rounder for 2010 out of any deal IMO.

By JohnQ on Jul 12, 2008

  9. O&B, John Q I agree with you two gentlemen, Walsh should certainly look to get more
from the clips or any other team for Zach. If the deal was accepted we would end up starting Lee @ the 4
who(with all his hustle and energy) does not shot well enough and lacks the ability to effectively guard many 4 men. We should get something back even if it’s to fill another gap on the team ie shooting, shotblocking, a lockdown perimeter defender or a future 1st round pick (since we may not have next years and will definitely not have one in 2010)

By saipanknickster on Jul 12, 2008

  10. then how does this sound to you guys?

Walsh may be holding out for Eric Gordon”.

if that ever went down, I’d imagine Jamal could be shopped heavily.

  11. Good PM Defender!

I hope all of you are having a Marvelous Saturday. Must of you know I am a true advocate for individuals to express their honest opinions and I also believe we should be able to disagree without becoming disagreeable.

But the chatter I have been reading on the blogosphere concerning ZBO and the possible trade scenarios have been hilarious. First and foremost, ZBO is one of the few true 20-10 players. You don’t give away that type of player for a second round pick or for Cap Relief for a 2010 Pipe Dream(The future is a mystery, the past is History, the only true gift is the PRESENT, this MOMENT). Secondly, the offensive scheme run by our new coach is based on a wide open run and gun style spread offense that is suited to ZBO’S game because of two factors. You can’t run without the ball, so his rebounding is key and he can hit the open jumper, can take most 4’s off the dribble, and we also know he can pass when he wants too. Now and if you move him for nothing, is DLEE our man? Not in the spread offense, because his does possess the prerequisite offensive skills like Passing, a Jump shot, or off-the driblles moves, plus he plays no D. He is not suited for this system. We need a back-up defensive minded Big and another quality PG with a bit of size who’s skill set is more offensively oriented and we’ll be straight.

To Dump ZBO or Curry is a foolish move at this juncture. IT’S system was not suited fot he two bigs to play together. D’Antoni’s scheme is suited for the bigs. The only person you discard at this juncture is Marbury. He is a Poison Pill in the Locker Room. And, before you get rid him, we need to to evaluate if he is ready to be the PG he can be and play selflessly to get that last payday. THE ONLY PLAYERS OUT SHOULD BE JJEAT ALOT, FJONES, RMORRIS, AND MCOLLIN…I AIN’T JUST BLOGGING

Seems like Saipan, Dlt, you and I are in consensus that common sense must guide any trade transactions or talks about either Lee or Randolph.

Common sense says we need rebounders as much as we need leadership from the point so to let go of Z-Bo or Lee for bag of chips is Frank Asswhola type garbage!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 12, 2008

  13. keep it poppin was cooelyhigh’s innovation
just bloggin’ was senior steady’s as far as i’m concerned.

lee may suck at defense or sticking a 15foot jumper, but he is actually a very good passer. you just don’t see it that often because lee is not an offensive threat, so he does not command a double team, the best opportunity to make a great pass.

zbo totals more assists because he has many opportunities to pass due to the fact that the defense is always doubling him.

zbo has great range, but his reputation from portland was that if you give him the ball, you would never get it back. last season with the knicks he only reinforced that reputation.

zach has the ability to pass, but once he gets the ball, he puts his blinders on. without surveying the situation of his four teammates, he is convinced the best option is for him to shoot it. that’s not team basketball.

both zbo and lee play hard, can follow up missed shots, they both can get offensive rebounds, but i agree under d’antoni’s system zbo is probably more valueable.

doesn’t mean zach was a good knick last year or that he should be a knick long term.

his stock is down and it makes sense to hold onto him for now.

i remember his attitude in the games though, when he mouthed off to isiah during the game with both his arms up in the air, when he and nate threw stuff at each other during a time out.

you can’t say 17 and 10 and automatically deduce he’s good for your team.

zach randolph does not play defense. during some months last season, it might have taken zach about three games to get a block or a steal. he does not jump high enough, isn’t long enough to alter shots down low.

zach randolph is a freelance scorer, just like jamal crawford, another poor defender.

we need to get the team players in here, and then we can compete.

The Bleacher creature reports appears to be a third rate operation. Either you or I or any of the fine Defenders or Fanatics Bloggers can do better than that. He poses more rhetorical questions than actually doing any analysis of why at all Walsh chose not to merely do a knee jerk reaction trade.

Donny appears to be playing chicken with what I believe to be the following logic. Zach has trade value, and even in the worse case scenario and under incredible time pressur to remove him from the roster before 2010 Zach should at the very least be worthy of a salary dump trade ala the Clippers proposal. But seeing that more comprehensive trade packages were sent to the Knicks by teams like the bulls, Bucks, Nuggets Walsh has figured that he might be able to up the anti. Walsh might alos be considering that Zach’s numbers and play may be rehabilitated under D’antoni, which will open up trade proposals later in the season from teams thinking Zach might put them over the edge if they are on the cusp of the playoffs or a potential playoff team looking to address a team weakeness. To that end for Walsh it is to early in the game to trade Zach for a bag of beans that might happen later if nothing more persuasive is presented. But for now Zach might net more for the team with some PT a sell job (heard that NYMSM) and some measured patience.

Glad to see the Faithful among US still weighing in and dropping some NY Knick Fanship and Flava on the Undisputed No #1 Fan Thread in the Nation. Props to KD for keeping KNICK HOPE ALIVE…Keep it rolling KD! I’ve got MAD respect for you.

As you may have noticed, many of the FORCE MD’S are on sabbatical. Steady, Harlem, My Straight up Homie Bronx, Modi, and our ADOPTED BRUDDER LIVES are a serious group of MEN, with Big Time occupations, off the charts acumen in a variety of endeavors, with varied interest and gifts and hobbies, and these Men of Distinction are very serious about having the greatest impact on Humankind.

The common thread that brought us together was our LOVE for OUR NY Knicks…What keeps US together presently is the mutual respect and esteem we have for each other, and our fellowship continues to reach new boundaries, and I am confident in the very near future this group will collaborate to make a difference in this world and expand our respective resources. I’ve said all of that to say, these Brudders are the Greatest and Purest of Knick Fans IMHO and believe me they are still tuned in, reading your post and hoping like hell that our NEW YORK KNICKS are turning the proverbial corner; and I’m certain they will make guest appearances on this THREAD and share their unique brand of KNICK LOVE with us real soon.

On that note, I hope this regime continues to exercise great patience and use good judgement in expanding the BBALL Bandwidth of our TEAM and add one or two more pieces that add a defensive presence and more athleticism to our new up tempo brand of BBALL this season. I am a fervent believer we are not that far away from a return to glory….

  30. Thanks for the Kind words KnicksD

Also thanks for the info, I’ll be sure to catch the rewind. Those of you who can catch the game fill me in on what your seeing. Give me an assessment on the rook and the system.

Here’s a bit I wrote on the Fix.

Alot of the players were either so terribly utilized or under underutilized. Last year the offense was either a muddled sumo match between wheather Z-Bo or Curry would initiate the offense from the post, and when teams bogged down, there was no motion to free up a shooter. Then by the time the 24 second clock ran down the team creatively replayed the Jamal Crawford and 1 mix tape tour.

This year sounds good so far, motion offense, every one getting touches, no muddled down offense, and a kid who recognizes the importance of getting his teamates touches.

I think in an era were many in the Atlantic division are copying the power tandem that the Celtics presented with Garnett and Perkins- Sixers, Toronto, even the Nets with their big Rookie and 4s already on the roster- the Knicks brass might be seeing the rising of the crest and might be adopting an approach that challenges that pace and tempo. Should make for exciting basketball, and remember when the powers of the east fade, the Knicks should be under the cap- assuming that to be true- to deezo up and clean house.

I can see a very innovative calculated gamble going on in the near distant horizon!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 14, 2008

  31. First off, it was Thomas who made the mistake of trading for Curry and Marbury. Second, if you can’t trade Marbury because no one wants him. And after this year Marbury’s contract comes off the books. Look Thomas built a bad team, now Donnie has to fix the mess. I not sure he can because he screwed up the Pacers when he was there. Anyway, back to my point, after this year when Marbury’s contract comes off the books the Knicks will be able to get a quality player. Right now trading him would only get another large contract. Keep Marbury and in 2010, you’ll have all kinds of money. Your boy Thomas Screwed things up and now we must re-build with Lee, Balkman etc. I can’t get over how you still defend Thomas. Thomas is a bad gm and a terrible coach.

The way I feel you have two options with Marbury. Tell him to leave (and continue to pay him )or let him know that this is the final year of his contract and if he wants to play in the NBA again, he must have a great season.

First the kid(Gallo).I like his stoke and hustle. He is the type of player that can keep the defense honest when dumping down low to EC or Zach.Worry about his defense, but that shot may make up for that……….B+

Wilson, played great, confident, good shot selection and defensively he blocked some shots.Good first game off a major injury………….A+

Balkman, still hasn’t found his shot yet and it will be hard for D’Antoni to find mintues for him if he can’t even shoot free throws about 60%,but he still has great hustle and energy……………………………………………..C+

Collins, still does not make good decisions with the ball as a point guard should. He did play good today and looked to be in good shape. He did have the fire at the end of the game to take it to the basket. This is his 3rd year,Duhon is in his 4th. If he would show potential we would not need Duhon
But, he had a good day………………………………………………B+

    Best of the rest…………………

I’ve seen Von Wafer play better, was not in the flow today, only had 2 shots and some free throws.Let’s see the next game,he needs to get in the game flow better.I know he can score………………………………………C

B.Hunter, did not score but 2 points, but I think we could use a banger like him inside the paint. He did have 6 rebounds and a powerful presence on the floor. He could have a role on this team(see Anthony Mason)……………………………………………………………………..B

A.Roberson, was great, probably the MVP for the Knicks today.Good stoke, good decision making. He has a great handle too.I hope the Knicks can find a spot on the roster for him………………………………………………A

  53. Chandler looks good. I think we can lessen our concerns about his knee. Had a lot of spring, speed and confidence. Gallo has heart, brains and ability. Definitely adjusted from tepid first half and had a strong second. Roberson also looks like he is ready for a stint in the league

  54. Nice play by play KnicksD

Vicbit good to see you on both sides of the blogfugee blogosphere!

Let me repost a lil summin summin that occurred to me while I wuz just bloggin on fanatics…

    Connect the Dots!

Just speculating really but I read several articles about Lee being aware of his situation as highly coveted trade bait and magic pill to help that Z-Bo contract swallow more pleasantly. I also read somewhere that Eric Gordon announced that he wouldn’t be participating in any further summer league games. That is Eric Gordon the rookie 7th pick from the Los Angeles Clippers?

So while the Knicks and Clippers play a game of poker two names of some prominence in both franchises names appear in reports as Walsh looks to up the anti and avoid trading Z-Bo for a bag of chips.

Is it possible that Eric Gordon may be a player that Donnie Walsh is looking to pry from the Clippers hands?

Why was Mike Dunleavy, he of a weary heart and the gas face fresh of an Elton Brand Philly Sixers style diss, sitting in the stands watching Knicks 2nd and third year players in a meaningless summer league game?

Connect the dots try some conjecture. Me I’d prefer to pry Jordan from the Clippers hands if we are to slip them Clips Lee and Randolph because common sense says the Curry alone will not be able to pick up that rebounding load, and the three’s may get worked against beefier lineups.

Besides we all know we need a shot blocker from the 5 spot, and we need players to replace the rebounding that will be lost with Lee and Randolph’s reportedly imminent departure.

    feedback please!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 14, 2008

  55. We should try to get Jordan back if we are too lose Lee and Randolph. Curry is not a strong rebounder or shot blocker. We need to make up for the loss of production on the boards from Z-Bo and Lee.

We shold especially work that angle if Robitussin looks like a keeper!

    Whose with me on this?

  60. Good AM Defenders!

Well, well, well…Last year while attending the Summer League, it was clear to me and many NBA Execs and BBALL Officianados that WCHANDLER had the prototype NBA physique and the bball skills to be special, and the proof is in the pudding.

Mr. Chandler is a bballer and gamer and obviously a very hard worker. He’s wearing a brace on the injured knee, but the fact that he is playing at all speaks to his grit, heart, and penchant for hard work, which certainly bodes well for this BBaller and the Knicks. This Kid got game…

The Italian Stallion is also a BBALLER Freak with a diverse bball skill set and high bball IQ. Like WCHANDLER, Gallo can play multiple positions, and he will get better defensively. He’s got great anticipation, and when he improves his strength and agility, this team will be able to design a TEAM Defensive scheme that will take advantage of Gallo and WCHANDLER length and athleticism. If we could get an athletic big (Johan Petro, 7″ of the Sonics come to mind)this team could do damage. Lastly, ARoberson a big time player at U of F and teammate of DLEE is a possible keeper, if he illustrates a willingness to defend and drop a few more dimes, he will stick and someone will have to go. AROBE is an Eddie House clone, and we know how fond D’Antoni was and still is of EHOUSE…The youngin just has to bring that FIRE and BURNING DESIRE TO SUCCEED. Consistency will be the key for AROBE…

Balkman is pretty much gone…We have Jeffries, who is bigger, more versatile, and due to his handle could be a bit more offensive in the new scheme, but he’ll never be spectacular. All you want is a steady diet of D and boards, flexibility in terms of line-ups. Talking about trades, I’m no capologist, but I would trade ZBO and DLEE and Balkman to Seattle for CWILCOX and PETRO and a 1st Round Pick in 2010 (some great young bigs will be exiting from the college scene). I’m not just blogging…

Have a peaceful and productive Tuesday Defenders!

Balkman does look like he has brought anything new to the table

One thing though… the coach Phil Webber used to run a player development spot out on the Left Coast w/ Kiki Vandeweghe… so hopefully he can work with some of the young guns and bring their skill levels up a few notches
I read DLee say that he has noticed improvement in his own jimmy since working with coach webber.

many guys on the roster were just utilized incorrectly last year. with development and a consistent system things WILL improve

Will you be doing a new thread on the recent game or leave that for a summer league recap.

What’s your thoughts on the Dunleavy sighting during yesterday’s game, and the word out that Gordon will sit out the rest of summer league. Would you prefer Eric Gordon or DeAndre Jordan in a salary cap clearing trade for Z-Bo?

Hit me back with some knowledge!

  66. Hmmmmm. My man Kevin Harewood. What’s up Cuz? I hope you have had a fabsummer. I didn’t get a chance to tell you how much I dug “25 Strong” and the other sounds worth talking about later. Glad to see you have time to leave some missives for our edification.

Hmmmmm. Cooley Dawg. Summer league next year. You, me and whoever else wants to make the trip. It turns out I made up my mind too late this time. The cheap tix are $600 a pop. No will do. But it was certainly a pleasure to hang out with you and Steady at the BSPN on draft night. Missed the rest of the ForceMDS, but we are bound to make it work. The power of the fellowship is strong enough to enhance and prolong life — certainly mine.

Hmmmmm. Steady. I hear you brother. Your voice is change. Drop it somewhere and I’ll follow. I need the challenge.

Hmmmm. PC. I’ll get back to you on the Gallinari dude. He’s got my support. If he turns out not to be all that I am getting on Walsh, not the Kid. I like his gumption and him crossing the mighty ocean to do his thing. But, the quality of his playing future will be decided by his defensive intensity of which there is very little at this moment. I’ll get back to that.

Hmmmm. O&B, you’re the king. I just read a magazine article on Nelson Mandela, who is turning 90, and his words of wisdom about leadership. You are trying to keep the indy thing going by dropping pearls everywhere and I mean everywhere. You need to be recognized for the work.

I think that would be a fair trade for both teams. We give them Lee and Randolph, and they give us DJordan and a 2nd round pick and cash.

  69. Welcome back lives on both sides of our Indy movement!

The Defenders and Fanatics in Nevada for next years summer league sounds like a plan.

    Out like a lightning scout.

    OBTW DLT

Yeah since “rumors” have Lee possibly going with Z-Bo in any trade to net us some useful and inexpensive longterm assets back east, the Knicks might consider insisting on DeAndre Jordan coming back along with a 2010 1st round pick- if of course that could be navigated.

Actually seems like the Clips are looking to save face, and the Knicks are looking to exit players that will hamper “2010″ or are redundant. Seems like La and NY might work together. But that is just my educated “WHAT” guesse!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 15, 2008

  70. O&B,

I think if the Clips add Lee and Randolph to Davis that would jump start their team really fast.If we give up 2 bigs we need at least 1 back in return.Or some third team needs to jump in to satisfy the trade.Let’s get this trade done,we have other issues to deal with…..Dumping Steph,JJames and what to do with MRose.

  71. I just posed the following question to Hahn over at the fix.

    REPOST TRANSPOST or whatever

    ________________________________________________________

    OBTW

    Alan

    Good chops on Bermanbury “crunch!”

Listen I have a question which perhaps you or the other Fixers might want to consider.

I love Meep Meep, funny shyt indeed.

    But

What will happen with the [ ]‘antoni Ferrari when it hits the bumby road of the Eastern Conference playoffs?

Assuming they get there some time down the near road? Many of the beefed up teams might be Geriatric, then again they might then be hitting their stride- save the Pistons, and Celtics.

If the road runner duped a malnourished coyote how will it fair against a powerful thoroughbred mare?

Then again I like D’antoni’s gumption, Crawford spoke with confidence about the coach’s belief in his coaching abilities, and teh fact that the man loves innovators- hello Michaelangelo- says alot to me that he has that about him. He’ll attempt to dictate the mismatches instead of having them dictated to him. The team being built is a slapp in the face to the sumo tandem East- Garnett and Perkins, O’neal and Bosh, Brand and Dalembert not to mentionthe Pistons the front line heavy Nets etc.

But do you think sending out a bunch of quick threes and 3/4 types might grind down the squad?

It’s just something that ran to my mind recently.

Me I’m looking forward to [ ]‘antoni playing the Michaelangelo style contrarian and taking that too the bank.

Why b/c I want to see the Knicks win a chip in my life time. Something which many an older head has the privilege of knowing.

    Out like a scout!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 15, 2008

  72. I think its possible to string something together with the Clippers in exchange for Lee and Randolph. Jordan and a 1st might be had by sending to LA some of our redundant players. Collins could back up Davis, Balk could provide the Clipps defense and intangibles.

That should net us a 1 for 2010.

What you think too much or just enough to sweeten the pot?

By Orange and Blue on Jul 15, 2008

  73. I heard on 1050 ESPN Radio NY that the Nuggets will be sending Marcus Camby to the Clippers for salary cap relief.

    WTF

Still Donny could still work a trade with LA (the Lakers) to get rid of Z-Bo but it might have to include a third team- ala my suggested three way trade with the Kings, Knicks, and Lakers.

    Darn!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 15, 2008

  74. Maybe that’s too much, maybe not.I can see us pushing Collins in the trade.Once you add Balk,we have got to get more bodies for this year’s roster.LAC doesn’t have much to offer in terms of talent. N8 would be a better back up for Davis. If so, we would need 2 first rounders (2009 & 2010) and Jordan. There’s nothing wrong with a 7-8 players trade.Add Q,Jefferies & James to the talks also.

  75. O&B

You are right Here it is

    By D L T Knicks on Jul 15, 2008

  76. Well, the Nuggets took the deal we didn’t,

The Clippers on Tuesday agreed to terms on a deal with the Denver Nuggets to acquire center Marcus Camby as their replacement for Elton Brand, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Clippers will only have to surrender a future second-round pick to acquire Camby, who is being jettisoned into the Clippers’ salary-cap space vacated by Brand to generate payroll relief for the Nuggets.

    By D L T Knicks on Jul 15, 2008

  77. Hold up Hold up here is the story originally from hoopsworld.

    “Marcus Camby to the Clips?
A source with knowledge of the situation has told HOOPSWORLD the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers are discussing a deal which would send center Marcus Camby to the west coast.
With Elton Brand departing for Philadelphia, the Clippers have around $12 million to spend this summer. Since LA is under the salary cap, the Clippers could absorb Camby’s salary without giving Denver anything in return. However, it is expected that if a deal is consummated, the Nuggets would get at least one draft pick in return.

For the Clippers, the deal would give the team a formidable frontline of Chris Kaman and Camby to complement the backcourt play of Baron Davis and rookie Eric Gordon.

The deal would help lessen the Nuggets’ payroll and give the team more financial flexibility moving forward. The 34-year-old Camby is due to make $8 million this season and $7.65 million in the final year of his deal in 2009-10.

The Clippers reportedly had dialogue this weekend about acquiring Zach Randolph from the New York Knicks in a deal that would have accomplished a similar goal for the Knicks.

The source emphasized that no deal has been completed as of yet. Stay tuned to HOOPSWORLD for the latest.”

The Clippers may be trying to induce Walsh to budge and give up Gumbo for nothing.

Can Camby provide post offense? No!

That is what they were trying to replace in Brand. Gumbo does that better than Camby. Kaman can do the shot blocking, and would compliment Gumbo better than a Camby Kaman lineup.

Let’s see what is confirmed over the next several hours before we- including me- jump off the tracks.

If this is so then I still think Gumbo could get sent to LA- the Lakers that is in a multi team.

    Fuck their crappy franchise!

By Orange and Blue on Jul 15, 2008

  79. It’s good to see some Knicks basketball, although it is only the Summer League. Watching Chandler was a kissy kissy for a Knicks Defender/Fanatic poisoned with an apple rotting from a 23 win season and cursed with a bad case of the Boston Celtic runs to a championshit. In other words, it woke me up. And so did the play by the latest child prodigy – Danny, as Q called him the other night.

A win is not always a win, but any victory now changes the atmosphere at MSG and provides an opportunity for optimism. Yes, we know that the promise of summer league is but a tease but me likey some good foreplay. (Yeah, yeah. Last summer we got great foreplay before getting funked. I know, I know.)

Gallinari is a little bit of a basketball tease. He piqued my interest. His upside is apparent. It is impossible to judge his ceiling because it depends so much on his opportunities, coaching, teammates and the team’s style of play. But, I agree with the consensus in that this boy can play.

Still, I am a little disappointed. Gallinari was a feel good story, but I did not see anything different than what I saw on the miles of You-tube video. He is an offensive prodigy, but he is currently defensively deficient. It is his defensive liabilities that will prevent him from being an NBA star. (Go on and mention Gilbert “No D” Arenas, a man who has lacks the leadership skills and often the common sense (see his blog) to lead a champion.)

On offense, I stand by my earlier description of him as a “black hole.” Don’t you see the Zach Randolph in is face up game. No he does not do a million jab steps before burrowing into the heart of the defense. Instead he over-dribbles until he can set up his move – kinda like Jamal Crawford. I bet, Danilo will be required to lose the emphasis on that dribble penetration move where his long beautiful first step is followed by a yo-yo crossover dribble that catches the defender off balance and sitting on the back of his heels as Danilo whizzes by. The NBA, not the Summer League version, is too fast and big for that move to work with any consistency. The defense collapses in the paint too quickly for that move to work without a deadly pull up jumper to fall back on. He will not be able to run regularly into the paint without getting called for offensive fouls, at least not unless Stern knights the Rooster in front of the refs before every game. He will not be allowed to run players over, at least not for the first year and a half. Kobe and LeBron lost playoff series, in part, because of their over-reliance on that one-on-one drive from the top of the key move.

Fortunately, Kid Galinari has a sweet shot and a jumper that will remind you of Kevin Garnett and Toni Kukoc. He has a dribble that will remind you of large point forwards like Scottie Pippen. When he learns “his” NBA game and the coaches learn how to use him, he should be proficient and efficient offensively.

A superstar? I still only see a good sixth man on a good team. I lack imagination, I guess.

Tonight I saw nothing defensively from the young kid. He often stood around in the lane for four or more seconds and looked lost as he roamed around the basket. Actually, in his first NBA caliber competition after a couple of practices, that should be expected. However, he demonstrated no “instinct” for defense. That same hunger and intensity that he has with the ball in his hand, he does not show on the other end. Those of you who play ball know what I am talking about. There are ball hogs and there are ball hounds. Gilbert Arenas is a ball hog. David Lee is a ball hound. Renaldo Balkman is a ball hound. He can’t shoot worth diddly, but he has a hunger for the ball. (Zach is a hog of a hound)

By contrast, Gallinari’s drive is turned on when he has the ball. Like most youngsters his victories come with putting the ball in the basket. His retorts to being scored upon don’t come in the form of steals or blocks, but jumpers, forced drives and dunks.

Watch Gallinari when the opposition has the ball. Bad footwork. He is constantly crossing his feet and getting turned sideways while he is getting beat off the dribble. He is slower and unbalanced on defense which should not be the case with such a wide wingspan. He will not stop guys his size and bigger. (Yes, I know: defensive development is likely to be secondary and takes a longer time and will probably take a much longer time under D’Antoni.)

We talk about how resilient he is after being bounced around in the paint, but he does not put any of that ample body on anyone when the opposition shot goes up. The big difference between him and Eddie Curry is that he at least jumps, but he is often out of position or he is not strong enough to hold his position. This is interesting, because we suggest that he will grow and add on bulk but the kind of defense his position and body requires demands more than bulk. It demands a very defensive attitude.

It is foolish to make predictions at this ridiculously early point, but I will dare to be foolish and say that the Knicks will miss David Lee (when traded) for a long while before Gallo is anointed the chosen one. He is hungry but not like David Lee is hungry. Not yet anyway. David Lee knows that in order to stay in the league he has to get to the ball. He is a worker. By contrast, I see Gallinari as the privileged prodigy who does not yet go after the ball, but expects it to come to him. Just ask his Italian teammates who will tell you that they relied on Gallo in crunch time. Everyone knew the ball was going to him and he would make something happen – like Crawford, not MJ.

I want to be wrong and I want Gallinari to succeed as a Knick. No one really knows how he will mature mentally, but he is headed in the right direction. I want Gallinari to develop a fire on both ends of the court like Garnett. Not like Nowitzki. Not like Kukoc. He has the body, but when will he get the mind set? Will he ever be a complete package?

At least he looks like he will help us enjoy the journey to the answer.

  80. Good PM Defenders! I pray all are having a productive and constructive Wednesday!

Up until now I didn’t believe in Ghost, but like most things time and a bit of wisdom can certainly change your persepctive. Glad to see MY Dear Brudder LIVES chime in and drop some KNOWLEDGE and OPINION…I am almost certain our Host with Most has a chair next to a table that is left available for Para-Normal Brudder can squat and eat some of Bernie Mac’s milk and Cookies…LOL

I have been scouring the various spheres this AM and I am blown away by all of the acrimony, anger, disgust, disappointment, and cynicism regarding Walsh not trading ZBO, and towards ZBO, Isiah, and I’m hopeful none of this folks handle my financial portfoio, if so, I’m in a helluva of a lot of trouble…LOL LOL

Paitences, patiences, and more patiences…No intelligent person trades an asset and recieves less than the asset is worth. Only a fool would that in their personal life, and the same can be said in the world of business. Secondly, I read on one blog where ZBO game is not suited for the system. I’ve said it before and i will say it again, it is quite obvious, many who posts have not played ball in the environs that propel BBALLcareers, cuase some of the thinking is downright ludicrous and farcical. Now I am a true believer in Prior Proper Planning beats Piss Poor Performance. But, living 2010 is so ridiculous, because so many things can happen between now and then. Careers, Conutries, Events, LIVES, change daily and putting all your eggs in any one basket is foolish and could bear very little fruit….
YOU LIVE IN THE MOMENT! We are one or two pieces away at making a run at this thing and despite are poor play over the last two years, we will be one of the few teams in the Eastern Conference that will bring back a core of players that are familiar (Boston, Wizards, Orlando, and Cleveland at the others as it stands at this moment) and I think that is truly a plus for us for this reason. Our new style of play excites real BBALERS. Some OPTIMISM ALONG WITH SOME DISCIPLINE FROM THE COACH could make all of the difference….

Adding the right pieces are important than getting rid of pieces. We’ve added to good solid pieces in Gallo and Duhon, and I willing to Walsh the benefit of the doubt that he will find thwe other pieces we need in due time and at the proper time…

    ONE LOVE DEFENDERS!

  81. Lives! Welcome back dude, cosign on if they move D Lee they will miss him. When I think of all the knicks who might get a rebound and throw a connecting 70-ft outlet pass, i’d just like to see D lee in D’antoni’s system before making any predictions on whether D’antoni likes Lee enough to keep him

But as the season ended I realized it might have been lee’s last. he’s a solid player with a modest contract. how many guys can we say that about currently?

I don’t know who the knicks are going to keep, but like you, I know who they would miss.

Great analysis of Gallinari’s first game in a knicks jersey (well, sort of, summer league…). looking forward to seeing more from this guy, they say alot of defense is attitude, this guy seems to be a competitor, so maybe what he doesn’t already know he can learn on the fly, and if not, better make sure we outscore our opponents ;)
