End of the road for Stephon Marbury in New York?

by knicksdefense on July 5, 2008

You don’t have to ask Mitch “the Grill” Lawrence, BBQ in the rain yesterday was no easy task. Yet where there is a will, there is usually a way. Like Kool Moe Dee, we got the job done. Hope everyone had a good fourth.

The New York Times is probably the least tabloid of all the New York City newspapers. For them to publish an article today forecasting the end of Stephon’s career as a Knick, it speaks volumes. If Isola had written it, that’s one thing (he’s goofed that one up probably about 10 times by now) but if Howard Beck is now talking about Marbury being bought out or traded, the odds are he is a goner.

The only problem I have with the Beck article above is that it paints a picture of Nash as unimpressive during his Dallas days. That is not the Steve Nash I saw work with Dirk Nowitzki as a Maverick. Any time you have Shaquille O’Neal calling you one of the most exciting players in the league, you must be doing something right. Shaq liked Nash’s game so much it wasn’t a surprise to me they ended up being teammates years later in Phoenix. I just don’t feel comfortable comparing Chris Duhon to Steve Nash at any stage of either player’s career at this point.

I’m not saying Chris Duhon will not do well in New York.  I’ll be pulling for him and all other Knicks. Duhon won the NCAA championship under coach K at Duke, and the tough, defensive-minded Scott Skiles was a supporter of Duhon’s game in Chicago, so I am looking forward to seeing what Duhon can do under the guidance of Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni.

As for Stephon, like Isiah, I think he’s had a fair chance at winning in New York. I will still be a big fan of the low-cost Starbury kicks as long as they still make them, but if Steve and Barry’s ends up signing a new Knick to wear their product, I will be buying those orange and blue sneakers instead.

This insert from your posted article says it all.

“Even before signing Duhon, the Knicks had resolved that they could not move forward while Marbury was still in the locker room. In their brief time with the franchise, Walsh and D’Antoni have learned how incredibly unpopular Marbury is with his teammates”.

I feel,Marbury had time to win over Knick fans.He didn’t.There was never that feeling that he would fight till end for his teammates or the fans. There was never a feeling he would this take over and LEAD this team,in the locker,or on the floor.

But,I do respect the effort he made to bring low-cost sneakers to an over-priced sneaker market. To help solve the problem of fighting and killing over expensive sneakers.Again, for that, he gets a pass in my book as a man.It is not a money making thing for Marbury. Many have done much less to help others.

But,as a Knick,I wish him gone.

Go to the Real GM Trade Checker and plug in the following Password

Trade ID #4707053

That it the trade I proposed between the Knicks, Lakers, and Kings

By Acquiring Odom, and Mihm we shave 61.9% of the team’s salary cap by next year, Lee will not have to be resigned by the Knicks for a number that will cut into Walsh’s 2010 scenario- rainbows up our asses and all.

Absent the trade Jefferies and Z-Bo’s contracts at 70.5% of the cap will run past 2010, and of course Lee will continue to hold the hammer over the organization.

My opinion as a fan is that D’antoni and Walsh may continue to talk about an engine to make a team run.

BUT…

An engine can’t run w/o sparkplugs, pistons etc. etc., all those intangible components that set the point gaurd up for the much ballyhooed fast break.

That is why any trade scenario for Lee or Z-Bo must return to the Knicks a servicable powerfoward to secure the rebounds and keep scoring opportunities alive for the team to scor and run the D’antoni fastbreak.

Anything else in trade is just bunk!

What are the defender’s thoughts on that rant?

I still don’t like the players we are receiving in return.Yes we can dump salaries and those players in 2 years, but will we win any games in those 2 years?

Your thoughts are noted. And that is why I left the fan disclaimer not just on my proposed trade but also on all the gibberish about getting rid of Lee in addition to attempting to get rid of Z-bo. In an ideal world if the Knicks Organization aren’t singing cumbaya to their imbedded reporters/bloggers about the 2010 miracle pill, then I say keep Lee, try to move Z-Bo b/c Lee needs more shine to continue his development process, and Gallinari was heralded as eventually developing into a 4 who can switch over to the three,… so he would need playing time their.

But being that I am running my trade with the 2010 rainbows up our asses trade script in mind, I am trying to generates numbers that Mgt would find plausible, and the imbeds could report with glee.

Again in an Ideal world Lee, Balkman and every draft pick who had to suffer through the Isiah rookie hazing — meaning no playing time untill the last month of season where the rook gets hurt, followed by the second year regression hazing– should stick around and get a chance to show what progress they could make under a head coach who many deem competent.

Happy hunting.

What trade would you propse?

O&B,

Really don’t have an answer on for who I would trade. I know after this year Lee’s contract is up, and he will be looking for a raise and a long term deal. That is probably the reason to trade him now,so he doesn’t mess with the 2010 plan.

Here is the problem:Lee is our biggest trade asset. He is high energy and low cost.In order to use this effectively,we need to package a long term contract with Lee(Z-bo if possible). We need to get back, expiring 2010 contracts,OR a real impact player who can play along side Lebron,Wade or Bosh in 2010.BUT,since these players play different positions(SF,SG &PF respectively)at what position would this new impact player(from the trade of Lee & Z-bo)play?Do we go for a PF,PG,SG or center.

IF WE GET LBJ,WHO WILL PLAY ALONG SIDE HIM?………….

That’s what this trade needs to be about.Putting pieces around our 2010 superstar.I don’t think LBJ wants to wait 2-3 years for us to assemble a winning team around him. The pieces need to be in place to get him to sign with the Knicks.
