Danilo Gallinari might stay in Europe another year

June 11, 2008 – 2:55 pm

It all depends on his NBA workouts the next few days.  But do you think the young man would be sent over by his dad, should Mike D’Antoni and the Knicks draft him at 6 or later through trade?

  2. Stephen A Smith on the Tim Donaghy scandal Tman was speaking of recently.

You don’t have to read Donaghy’s testimony to sense there has been something wrong with the officiating of the NBA for some time now. Just watch Jordan in the 90’s or Kobe and Lakers during these 2008 NBA finals.

I like many a soon to be former fan of the NBA have been very suspect of the officiating going on in the league.

Actually if truth be told I bet I recently made with your boy peaceman was based on my view that the NBA has been geared this season to grant the Celtics a 17th championship.

There were many actions that weren’t taken against the Celtics this year that should have been taken.

    Namely:

Pierce should have been suspended several games for choking Crawford in the preseason.

Not a word from the “N.B.A.” on that one.

Perkings should have been suspended at least on game during the Celtics v. hawks series (lower case h for hawks no misprint as the Celtics were scripted as the superior team this post season), when he stepped outside the bench area during one of the games of that series. That non call, especially Perkins playing the way he is, might have cost the Hawks a game in the series.

    Again

Not a peep from the “N.B.A.”

Pierce Manhandles certain Piston defenders and the foul calls go in Pierce’s favor. The shyt is so blatant Rasheed Wallace goes on an explitive ridden tirade against what too many soon to be former fans already know. The playoffs, and now the “N.B.A.” finals are stacked in the Celtics Favor.

Not a peep from the League on that one.

Game 2, 2008 “N.B.A.” Finals the disparity in the officiating in Boston Garden to the detriment of the Lakers and in Favor of Stern’s Goldenboys the Celtics, raises the ire of Phil Jackson.

Again not a peep from the League.

But what all too well knew has just been made public. Stern is the script writer and his croocked refs and cronies are the on court directors.

I know the Celtics will win the “N.B.A.” finals this year from the moment I saw that Kevin Garnett Gator Aide comercial marketing the direction of this years playoffs by highlighting the Celtics, Garnett followed by the slogan “league of clutch!”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPrSeRey3SI

That same sort of comercial followed the NFL Superbowl MVP performance of Eli Manning, and unexpected result for the NFL.

Now it has been following every series and series advance by the Boston Celtics, in this case the Gator Aid commercial is not documenting an unexpected championship or unexpected championship performance.

    No

The Kevin Garnett Gator Aid, “League of Clutch” Commercial is foreshadowing David Stern’s Master Plan to hook up Danny Boy and the old boy Boston network a 17th ring.

Betting peaceman for a pair of Knicks season tickets by picking the Celtics to beat the Lakers is like taking candy from a baby!

  4. strong post O&B.

the nba is a fishy place, has been for some time.

I can’t tell you with a straight face that ewing didn’t travel sometimes on that drive through the middle of the paint he did so often. when the shoe was on the other foot I didn’t complain much, because it was “the superstars don’t get that call”

but when I see Kobe mouthing of to the refs the way he does it makes me think the refs are in his pocket.

The most obvious example of bad officiating was when there was no call in the Spurs vs Lakers series recently. Brent Barry was clearly fouled, and although it was a foul on the floor, they were most probably in the bonus and he should have gotten two free throws, the score would have been tied and one team would have had to earn a victory instead of having it handed to them. Hard for me to let that one go, even if the spurs already have so many rings. it is not like I’m ever going to root for the spurs, but that was a raw deal and then they tried to call us idiots after the game by saying he didn’t “sell the foul” enough. whatever.

Also, which preseason Celtics-Knicks game had Pierce choking Crawford? I recall that the game I drove up to watch in Boston was not televised, so it must have been the Knicks game when the Celtics came to New York? I must have missed that somehow or forgotten about it.

The best thing for stern to do is bring in all new coaches from the NC2A, but if he did something like that it would come across an admission of guilt.

Wouldn’t want to be in his shoes right now.

In Knick land, its all about the draft however. Two weeks to go, and the big names are in town. Today was Mayo, wonder if anyone that is able to publish was allowed to watch that workout. if donnie walsh really has reworked dolan’s crappy media policies, then some of the MSM will have something to write about in the next couple days.

I think we’re going to get a good player when it is all said and done.

  5. This NBA scandal may have cost Kobe a ring. The 4th quarter comeback would have been impossible if you factor out the usual home cooking. What you saw was a pretty fair game where “Homey, the Ref” played it straight. There are reasons these things don’t happen to often. The better team one,the one that plays “D”.What does that mean for us.Nothing has changed.Instead of trying to build a team “the right way”, one that is tough and plays D, we are going the show biz way.It will fill the seats, that’s important to “Nothing But Accountants”, and the NYC economy too, but it is not the way to build a winning franchise.Give Ainge credit. he took a risk and recreated the essential parts of San Antonio”s team in Beantown. We chose another, fun, but essentially meaningless road with Phoenix Mike!It should be interesting, but we oldtimers would have liked to build something more solid with Mark Jacjson, a NYC traditionalist.LGK.
    Love is still the answer

  6. Tman

I actually thought the same thing about the way this years Cetltics were constructed.

Post Player defensive presene inside = Garnett.

Slasher Scorer ala, Ginobli & Parker = Pierce, Rondo.

Defensive Role Players and outside shooting = Posey, Casell, Perkins

    Solid Coaching = Thibodeau

  7. The C’s will win because of superior D ala Tom T. We should have waited for the finals to end and get him as head coach. I don’t know how many times it need be said but OFFENSE WINS GAMES, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS !!!

Once again NY picks the big name to make a media splash instead of the little guy w/ the best ideas.

Do you guys think that Bynum would have made a big difference in the finals? I do.

  9. Is Danilo from Argentina?Oh,Italy, where his coach who couldn’t make it in the NBA was exiled to.Is he another Kukoc, maybe, Tony played no D on one of the greatest defensive teams ever, so he sat a lot.Very few Euros are impact players, Dirk and Tony, you’re the exceptions, and even when they are it’s usually on defensively challenged teams. Now those Argentinians are a whole different deal, those are some thuggish mf’s.Those european hoopster sweatshops need to focus more on footspeed and defensive technique.Kobe can’t be happy with a certain jump shooting Euro who was undressed by Ray Allan in the critical last minute play the other night. To be fair he got no help because Coach Phil didn’t react well to the C’s going small forcing the one on one D.Danilo is young and may be the real deal offensively, in a few seasons.Right now his lack of athleticism only makes sense on a running team that plays no D.Oh, wait a minute! that’s who we want to be.It’s short sighted thinking like that that’s put this country in the terrible hole we’re in now. It’s not about feeding the stockholder or diletante’s entertainment feeding frenzy.Theree’s more than enough crap on cable tv.It should be about creating a sound foundation for the future and its growth, look at San Antone’s run!Mr. Walsh,I hope you have a good business plan in place, and not just a good golden parachute?LGK Danilo is not the one!
Oh, by the way, Name all the Italian NBA superstars?Short list right?
Euro’s can be good players, but right now they hover in the lists of good, not great players. Now if he were from Argentina or the Virgin Islands…

By Tman on Jun 14, 2008 at 1:00 pm

  10. I see you’re no fan of the euros Tman. I haven’t been either, especially when I expected players like Milos Vujanic and Maciej Lampe to give us SOMETHING on the court when in fact it came to be known that they gave us nothing. The former didn’t even make it across the pond. Speaking of not making it across the pond, I knew Frederic Weis was a bust the moment we picked him over Artest.

Looking beyond the euro, however, the Knicks have not really had very much relative success in the draft dating all the way back to the mid-to-late 80’s. I don’t know if a great player can be had at #6, but it is definitely Walsh’s job to do his best to get one.

For better or worse, the NBA has changed in a major way since the last time the Knicks have made the playoffs at the beginning of the millenia. Walsh even said the knicks in their current state are constructed for the way the NBA was played 10 years ago. Attribute it to the way Team USA has played against foreign competition since 2002, or perhaps D’Antoni’s system has influenced the philosophy Toronto, Dallas, Golden State, and other teams are adpoting based on Phoenix’ regular season success over the past four or so years.

Steve Kerr, a career role player who happened to ride on the coat tails of such NBA greats as Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan, wasn’t buying into D’Antoni’s system and that’s why they decided to let him go in the end. The trade for Shaq was proof that Kerr does not think you can win a championship with the D’Antoni brand of run and gun, seven second euroball.

My take on it is this: if there is a guy that has the resources and insight to know which euro draftees can successfully ball in the NBA, and which ones aren’t worth an NBA lottery pick this year, it is D’Antoni. He’s got the experience of being highly successful on both continents (okay, maybe not so much here in the post-season, but 60 wins is not 23 wins any way you slice it), and when you look at the trends in the NBA, there are usually some overseas players (be it Argentina, Italy, Spain, ect) making big contributions on the teams that have won the most games in recent years. It may not be entirely coincidental that the Knicks, who have clearly adopted an anti-euro stance during Isiah’s tenure as president of basketball operations, have been at the very bottom of the weakest of six divisions in the NBA.

We have to take the best player available. It may or may not be Gallinari. It probably isn’t Gallinari at #6, but it might be Gallinari if we trade down.

It is a coin toss who the Knicks take if they keep the #6 pick, and I’m certainly not leaning towards Gallinari over other players. There are too many players I have not seen enough of. Just because Danilo is a euro or has D’Antoni roots, it doesn’t mean he can or cannot ball, but I see the possibility of the Knicks trading down, and if they do, getting someone like Gallinari whilst getting rid of some current knick contracts and picking at somewhere around 12 is something that could happen theoretically.

Walsh could not hide his disdain for Zach Randolph during his opening press conference.

If we do keep #6, it could easily go to Mr. Love, or the kid I’m hearing positive things about recently, Joe Alexander, or someone like Westbrook, or Eric Gordon for that matter. Who really knows right now besides Walsh and D’Antoni?

The only thing I’m fairly certain about is that the New York Knicks probably will not be able to select OJ Mayo at 6. Maybe at 4 he’d still be there, but unless there is some kind of public relations disaster or secret chronic injury, at number six there won’t be any OJ left.

We have a plethora of needs to start playing competitively again, and there are plenty of options to begin to address some of these needs. The higher the pick, perhaps the better you feel about knowing exactly who your team is going to nab when draft day comes. Right now at six, I wouldn’t put money down on any of these cats. That’s how good of a feeling I have about knowing what the Knicks will do when draft day comes. This time last year, every mock draft in existence had the Knicks taking Chandler because Isiah sort of publicly endorsed him by promising to pick him if he shut down his workouts for other teams, which Chandler did in fact end up doing. We knew Isiah was going to take Channing in ‘05 as well for the same reason.

This year: nada. Nobody knows. Walsh prefers it that way, it seems.
