NCAA Tournament

March 28, 2008 – 5:09 pm

Since many of us are watching the tournament, a new post for it. Good luck to all those who are betting on their brackets. My guess is if Davidson wins it all, some people are going to get pretty rich…

and discuss the Art of coaching together????

  8. This kid Curry is the best scoring guard I’ve seen in the college ranks in some time. He’s not just a shooter, though he does that well, he scores in a variety of ways. He’s also deceptively strong…he can take the hit and score with ease.

He’s scoring basically at will against arguably one of the best defensive guards in the nation, Flowers.

I hope he stays another year so the Knicks get a shot at this kid. We definitely have other issues to address, but if we can obtain a pass-first pg to compliment this kid, we’ll have something very special.

“Collins needs to go”………………Didn’t Thomas draft him and then put him on the end of the bench for most of the season?

“JJefferies only played ONE good game this year(last night)”…….Didn’t Thomas sign him and over play him even though he hasn’t produced?

“No one has found Q’s game yet”………………………. Didn’t Thomas trade Kurt Thomas for him?

“Steph,MRose & JJames are STILL on team”……………. Didn’t Thomas bring them here?

I know it’s all Layden’s or Larry Brown’s fault even though Thomas brought all those players here and sets the line up, gameplay and makes substitutions.

Crawford has 33 at the end of the third.
the way he is shooting it in the second half, he may get to 50.
but is winning the game only an afterthought now for the knicks?
are the knicks playing only to pad their season stats?

  33. Wait a minute, peace, we’ve been tanking all season. We’ve only won 20 games. I know you love Thomas but come on 20 wins isn’t a lot. We have 10 games left. We might not even win 25 games.

  34. Taking a break from the Knicks, I find it funny how Lawrence Frank rarely gets trashed with the New York media. Jason Kidd, demanded that Byron Scott be fired after Scott took the Nets to the finals twice. Then Jason Kidd had his hand picked coach Lawrence Frank get the job. Then Kidd being the asshole that he is demanded the Nets trade him. If I were the Nets Gm, I would be completely angry with Kidd. The Nets did everything Kidd wanted them to do. And now Byron Scott’s new team is in first place in the competitive Western Conference. Maybe Kidd will shut his mouth next time. And Kidd’s new team Dallas might not even make the playoffs.

  36. Good point about Kidd Dross. What a dick. Byron Scott is proving himself to be a pretty consistent coach. He just needs that shiny stuff that earns the respect of all.

By Jay Bee on Mar 30, 2008 at 7:48 pm

  37. Kidd will never win a title and I’m glad. And I don’t think the Nets should be too angry–he did get them to the Finals twice, and this season Jersey was able to turn an old PG (and they were going nowhere in the postseason, even at their best) into a young shotblocker and an up-and-coming point. Maybe his being a selfish baby this season was the best thing he could’ve done for them: he forced Thorn’s hand.

As for Frank…I think he deserves one more chance. Now that the old cancer is gone, and Frank may have a reasonably young and complete team next year, he should get one more shot to make a solid playoff team out of them. This will be his first season out of the playoffs, if the Nets do miss them.

By Mike on Mar 30, 2008 at 8:36 pm

  38. Though you’re both right on–Byron Scott is one hell of a coach. I remember a remark he made when the Nets played Boston in the Eastern Championships, and the Kidd “wife beater” chants were at their worst, and Scott was seen as a reminder of Riley’s Lakers: Byron said gametime coaching starts before the game, it comes simply from the coach’s presence. I watched him soaking in the abuse in the Garden and thinking, This guy’s pretty damn coldblooded. I don’t know if he can coach, but he can sure set a calm tone for his team.

Turns out he can kind of coach, too. The Hornets are a very fun team to watch…Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler could do some very great things together. Talk about a foundation…the best young point, and one of the best young centers in the game.

  40. Totally unnecessary from another writer enjoying taking shots with nothing new information to add. It’s not working, but no one can admit that each transaction by GM I. Thomas did not show value. He did not throw away talent like Larry Bird or Chris Wallace.

Who is this guy and what has he done to deserve taking a shot from across the country. Punk move.

  43. steady, i have no idea why he slipped past coach K, UNC and the rest of the big recruiters, especially considering who this guy’s father is, a legendary NBA shooter named Dell. they only need about .05 seconds on the clock to get their shot off, and like Gus Johnson will tell you, chances are it is going to be “pure.”

  45. Unless a team wins the lottery, there is little chance for a team to become a champion. Let’s face it: you have to get lucky in the NBA. The last GM to score a coup that brought a championship was Jerry West with the Kobe trade. (that has to be one of the great trades of all time.) However, West could not win in Memphis.

Hopefully Stern puts a magnet in our lottery balls. He’s a Knick fan! Let’s go Stern!

By HarleminMD on Mar 31, 2008 at 1:41 pm

  46. Not sure about that #44 being factual Ol’ Soul. I would put a JB on that one. Look at Seattle and Portland. It is a tragedy how these guys always end up in the lottery and continually field a less than competitive squad. Now, one can see the light out of the Portland tunnel with Old Man Oden recuperating from surgery. Not sure the same can be said about Seattle following this MegaMillion campaign. Coming out of G’town, I could have sworn Jeff Green was “da trooth” and that he and Durant were going to be unstoppable. They need bigs in Seattle–maybe they can lighten our load. Not sure our JJeff had any NBA game left in him hangin’ a Dubba-Dubba against ATL. That’s the kid we expected coming out of training camp from that “working man’s beard” (profiled by Lives) and all that Hoops hype on the blogosphere. In all, we wuz robbed Defenders–Bamboozled, Hoodwinked, led astray, our fanaticism ran amok this season. Dig deep, we are NY, NY–so big bad and beautiful it had to be named TWICE. We’ll be back. D L T, we can now discuss Other Players since my steadiness did not bear fruits this season. Peaceman, what’s good with the King of Queensbridge?

By HarleminMD on Mar 31, 2008 at 4:06 pm

  48. even the great joe dumars has had subpar draft picks he became president of basketball ops in 2000 (except Tayshaun)

2007 NBA 1 15 15 Rodney Stuckey Eastern Washington University
2007 NBA 1 27 27 Arron Afflalo University of California, Los Angeles
    2007 NBA 2 27 57 Sammy Mejia DePaul University
2006 NBA 2 30 60 Will Blalock Iowa State University
2005 NBA 1 26 26 Jason Maxiell University of Cincinnati
    2005 NBA 2 26 56 Amir Johnson
    2005 NBA 2 30 60 Alex Acker Pepperdine University
2004 NBA 2 25 54 Rickey Paulding University of Missouri
    2003 NBA 1 2 2 Darko Milicic
    2003 NBA 1 25 25 Carlos Delfino
    2003 NBA 2 29 58 Andreas Gliniadakis
2002 NBA 1 23 23 Tayshaun Prince University of Kentucky
2001 NBA 1 9 9 Rodney White University of North Carolina at Charlotte
    2001 NBA 2 9 37 Mehmet Okur
2000 NBA 1 14 14 Mateen Cleaves Michigan State University

Dumars has made up for mediocre picks with great trades.

  50. “I recall a few months ago when the knicks played in philly, the crowd was chanting “fire Isiah” towards the end of the fourth quarter. why should they care? i don’t know.”

The entire NBA hates Thomas, that’s why. The see him as a joke. They see it as a joke that we still have him here. If the Knicks don’t want to be considered a joke they need to start winning and as long as the Knicks have Thomas, they won’t win.

Look at Tom Coughlin with the Giants. He was thought of as a joke by most NFL players, including many of his own. Well the Giants won the Super Bowl, now he’s not seen as a joke neither are the Giants anymore. When you start winning less people think you’re a joke.

By ed drossman on Mar 31, 2008 at 4:37 pm

  51. Is it possible guys, that Isiah Thomas decided to tank to pickup the prodigy from chi-town D. Rose? Maybe. The kid would look great in orange and blue, no doubt. But if so, when were they playing for real, and when was it all a farce to knicks fans everywhere?

Because we didn’t have those win streaks this season (max of only 3 this season), and that’s why it is very hard for me to support what is going on currently with the squad, because there were some great games last season, and even the crappy LB-led teams gave us reasons to cheer during the month of January.

to be 100% honest with you, whatever it takes for the team to be competitive again, to be good again, that is what I support. This year the team has neither competed nor could by any stretch of the imagination considered to be an improvement over what we’ve been seeing over the past few seasons. Therefore, it looks like regression to me. Hence, the recent bitching and moaning. I still bleed orange and blue, and I cosign on whatever it is going to take to get this team back into the playoffs where it rightfully belongs.

    New York is long overdue.

By knicksdefense on Mar 31, 2008 at 4:48 pm

  52. I’m not going to look up Detroit’s draft position for each of the last five years, but I’m pretty sure they haven’t had a lottery pick in a while–maybe not since Darko, who will obviously go down as Dumars’ worst mistake. The others…if you can pick up a contributing player in the latter half of the first round, where Detroit has been customarily picking, you’re doing well. Stuckey, Afflalo, Maxiell and Delfino have all seen quality time on the floor, and Tayshaun is one of their mainstays–he’s what Isiah apparently thought he was getting in signing Jared Jeffries, or something like that. No doubt, acquiring Rip, Chauncy and Sheed by trade were excellent trades, and I’ll agree, that’s where Joe seems at his best. But don’t trash his drafts: they’ve been pretty good (with the exception of Milicic).

By Mike on Mar 31, 2008 at 5:19 pm

  53. “Is it possible guys, that Isiah Thomas decided to tank to pickup the prodigy from chi-town D. Rose? Maybe”

Guys its not like the Knicks just started playing bad basketball, they’ve been playing badly all season. Maybe a better question “would be is it possible guys, that Isiah Thomas decided to tank (the entire season) to pickup the prodigy from chi-town D. Rose?” There was never a point in this season that the Knicks were playing good baskteball. In fact I have to go back to the brawl against Denver to point to a time when the Knicks even looked half way decent.

  54. drossman. read the entire entry before you talk shit.

By knicksdefense on Mar 31, 2008 at 5:46 pm

  55. The problem I have is with your first sentence “Is it possible guys, that Isiah Thomas decided to tank to pickup the prodigy from chi-town D. Rose? Maybe” There hasn’t been a time that Thomas has been here when the Knicks haven’t been tanking. They’ve tanked ever since the lost in the first round of the playoffs under Lenny.

Thomas needs to go and if people here don’t think that, they are either on Thomas’ payroll or wish to be.

New coaches are Mark Jackson head coach, Pat Ewing and Herb Williams assistants. Or rick Carlisle head, Mark Jackson, Pat Ewing and Herb Williams as assist. Anyone have any other suggestions for coaches.

By ed drossman on Mar 31, 2008 at 6:06 pm

  56. I also like Bill Laimbeer as head coach.

By ed drossman on Mar 31, 2008 at 6:06 pm

  57. I agree Dross about the coaches. I wouldn’t mind Mark or Rick as the head coach
with the assistants you named. That would be great.
I’ve been saying we should tank for the last month and a half for this kid
D Rose. It’s no secret he’s the truth. If I had the #1 pick I would take
him over Beasley. Especially if I was the Knicks. We need a PG more than we
need Beasley. Beasley is not a monster on defense. Rose plays both ends of
the floor and remember I said this….next year when he’s drafted…he will be
THE MOST ATHLETIC PG IN THE LEAGUE!!!!
That’s not me talking shit right now…that’s me being serious.
    I’m perfectly sane right now.

By DaVonn Obama Jefferson on Mar 31, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Bill Laimbeer’s coaching record is nothing to scoff at. This guy has never lost as a player or a coach.

By ed drossman on Mar 31, 2008 at 8:32 pm

  69. I think Rick Mahorn would make a good assistant. The guy’s pretty sharp, and he could coach up guys like Eddy and David Lee in rebounding and post defense. I’ve read in plenty of places that Mahorn’s got the stuff to be a great coach.

By Mike on Mar 31, 2008 at 8:39 pm

  70. I hear you Ed,but that’s a WNBA record.Coaching these high priced superstars may prove to be different.

The coaches and players in the WNBA are not the same quality as the NBA.

He was only a bully in the NBA(he used what talents he had).

Plus a little better than .500 winning pct is not that impressive.

But, who knows these are the Knicks!

  73. Actually last time I checked Pat Ewing, Mark Jackson and Herb Williams are black and I wanted them on the Knicks’ coaching staff. Thomas, regardless of his color, is just a terrible coach.

  74. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/05/sports/basketball/05wnba.html?_r=2&pagewanted=3&ref=sports&oref=slogin

[“Bill was coaching when he was playing,” said Isiah Thomas, the coach and president of the Knicks and a former Pistons teammate of Laimbeer’s. “Chuck Daly put a lot of trust in us. We had guys on the floor telling each other what to do, putting together game plans. Bill understands offensive and defensive concepts as well as anyone.”]

“I’m a championship coach,” Laimbeer said. “I win, I demand, I hold people accountable. My job is to say what everybody else is thinking but is afraid to say. Some people don’t like that. That’s too bad.”

He says his style would work in the N.B.A., on his terms. Reflecting upon the Larry Brown fiasco with the Knicks, Daly said, Thomas told him, “I should have hired Laimbeer; he’s so thick-skinned.”

So even Thomas wanted to hire Laimbeer. I guess Thomas is a racist.

By ed drossman on Apr 1, 2008 at 12:22 am

  75. Mahorn I like, but daaaaaaamn Laim-beer. He wasn’t a real bully, he was a cheap shot arteeest. I’ve seen his girls play, but I didn’t really notice the x’s and o’s as much as I was checking out the girlies jacking up three pointers and scratchin’ the hell out of each other. Plus he used to get slapped around by the likes of Chief Stiffass in Boston back in the day. Mahorn and Jeff Ruland were the real enforcers back on those ruthless Bullets teams. A pick set by one of those guys was like hot coffee being thrown on your azz. You’re awake now MF!!

By Jay Bee on Apr 1, 2008 at 12:23 am

  76. Why do we keep throwing around Pistons retreads? Where the hell is Oakley? The only problem with him is that you would not be able to shut him up (media policy be damned) and he would fight at least one of the players. But I betcha he would get his point across. And if they earned it, he would love them guys to death (no homo). I need to check my sources and find out where the heck Mase is hiding these days. I haven’t seen him at homecoming the past few years.

By Jay Bee on Apr 1, 2008 at 12:29 am

  77. Wait you don’t want to hire Laimbeer who has actual coaching experience, having won two championships, but you want to hire Oakley? What kind of coaching experience does Oakley have. I threw up names of knicks like Mark Jackson, Pat Ewing and Herb Williams and people didn’t like those choices.

Here’s where I suggested Mark Jackson as coach:
New coaches are Mark Jackson head coach, Pat Ewing and Herb Williams assistants. Or rick Carlisle head, Mark Jackson, Pat Ewing and Herb Williams as assist. Anyone have any other suggestions for coaches.

    Comment by ed drossman — March 31, 2008 @ 6:06 pm

Here’s what peace said when I suggested Mark Jackson as coach :
“The Garden continued to boo his azz out of town! They were visious,
even when we were winning and booed every time he touched the ball!
Larry brown has a better shot than Jackson in NY! Jackson may have success with the Clippers
or even IONA! NOT THE KNICKS!

    Comment by Peaceman — March 31, 2008 @ 8:01 pm.

Here’s another response to my suggestion of Mark Jackson as coach:

“Mark Jackson isn’t known for defense. this team needs a defensive renaissance to become competitive again.

    Comment by knicksdefense — March 31, 2008 @ 6:36 pm”

So if you read my postings you’d see that I did throw up names of Knicks ie Mark Jackson as coach, Pat Ewing, Herb Williams AND MAYBE OALKEY (AS JAY BEE SUGGESTED) as two of his assistants. Before you claim I’m only throwing out Pistons retreads, why not read my postings?

  80. Laimbeer’s definitely not a dumb guy, but I dislike him so much from his playing days it’s hard to get used to the idea of him coaching in the NBA (and he was so fucking smarmy on ESPN I couldn’t bear watching, so I turned the channel. Good thing he didn’t last). So what if we’ve brought up a few Pistons retreads? A Knicks retread is currently doing pretty well in LA. I don’t hear them complaining. Oakley, though…he was all enforcer (and he still kind of is, from what I read). I don’t know what else he brings to the table. But Mahorn (great line about the coffee, Jay Bee!) was not only tough, but also smart. He could do what Rodman did (without the craziness), keep his opponents off-balance mentally…he understood the game. He didn’t just throw people around.

By Mike on Apr 1, 2008 at 9:11 am

  81. I don’t care where the guy is from, NY, Detriot,LA Chicago etc if the coach can win or has won as a coach, I’ll take him for the Knicks.

Peace is unable to stop making racist statements.

By edward drossman on Apr 1, 2008 at 10:19 am

  82. Good AM Defenders!
Saw this MSM statement about Belicheat:

Belichick has denied to Kraft and in a newspaper report that he ever taped another team’s practice. He told Kraft that on a scale of 1 to 100, the tapes rated a 1 in terms of how helpful they were to his preparation.

If that’s true Bill then why tape?

I know that previous blame scenarios left Mills with a spank. IMO, Mills and the MSG attorneys got ABS. He wrote the BS glowing evaluations despite clear shortcomings. He did not go far enough when all the ABS theatrics was playing out opting for loyalty to ABS and sister rather than IT. The chickens came home and rested on Mills lap. As far as Monty is concerned, he is a Stern’s NBA creation–All drama, all the time. What you see ain’t what you get. NYK has been patsys to the NBA for far too long and NYK fans should tell both Dolan AND Stern.

Definsider, pitch this scenario: IN: Walsh/West w/ H2O as VP (understudy), Thibodeau, Harter. Mills, Aguire, Glymph out. Walsh sells out an inferior product and arena in Indy. He could do the same in NY on the greatest stage as his last hurrah! Watch Dolan link this announcement as part of the $14 billion Mecca renno. H20 had the right training at Memphis, dabbles in the media insdustry, and is a FOJ (friend of Jim). He can get OJT and get Bird rights. On the NYK side, it’s ironic that there’s mention of the sweet smell of Rose in the Garden. Marbury is still serviceable/can still play and help groom Rose/Augustin/Love for the PG. That expiring contract is a ginormous asset into 2010 when the Mamba and King James are set to relocate.
    See what’s good Definsider.

Read an interesting article about what Behavioral Specialists call “Action Bias”–you know, that sense you have to DO SOMETHING as a reaction to a consistent negative outcome. The studies have shown that at most times, the probability of success increases when the protagonist does NOTHING. So Jim, the next time someone tells you: “Don’t just sit there like a lump on a log, Do Something!” Don’t.

  88. Think more about LeBron, Melo and Wade. Kobe’s not going anywhere unless Bynum’s knee explodes and Gasol breaks his leg in five places and has to be euthanized. The Lakers are set for quite a while.

By Mike on Apr 1, 2008 at 4:20 pm

  89. Every Knick, veteran or new, should be forced to read Clyde’s books first so they show himthe proper respect. Otherwise they may mistake him for the funny guy that calls their games with the retro suits. If you’re going to define what it means to be a Knick, he would be a great starting point.

One of the biggest problems we have is our guards on defense. They need to be taught how to keep a defender in front of them and how to continuously mess with their concentration. You don’t let shooters get into a rhythm. You have to attack them defensively. Make them focus on you. Stay in front and move your feet. Draw the damn foul or challenge the shot. It doesn’t matter if you’re 5′9 if people hate to see you coming. Nate should be obnoxious to players. He’s got that annoying edge to him that if he keeps talking to you in that boyish voice, he’s going to get on your nerves. Put that together with a willingness to get in that jersey, and N8 could be one effective defender.

Jamal has the length, but seems to be afraid to mix it up. Probably because he’s so skinny. When he bulked up last summer, I was hopeful for him because I saw his weight as one of his disadvantages. When he goes to the hole, he goes in softly for a floater or fingerroll. How about a beastly two handed dunk? Is he afraid to hit the floor? Methinks he is. Defensively he shepherds the offensive player in toward the big which often gets them into foul trouble. Rarely does Jamal give true defensive effort. So I believe he would benefit from having a defensive minded mentor that would call him on his shi+.

No need to talk about Fred because he’s as good as gone. His new nickname should be Slot because that’s all he is right now. A slot for a rookie. Steph will play next year and will play well, because he is all about the money. Humbled but hungry, he will not only come off of the bench, he will attempt to be great. He knows if he doesn’t play well or cuts up this year then when he drops off of the books, he will really drop off of the books. That long money won’t last too long once his betta ho divorces him (irreconcilable differences, ABS, BJ in truck, erratic behavior, etc.) I don’t wish that on people, but I see her game and she’s waiting until that last check drops before the subpoenas start flying and all of the sudden she can’t take it anymore.

Mardy may end up being a casualty of war, but if it’s me, he’ll be running the show next year in summerleague like N8 did. See if he worked on his shot over the summer. See how aggressive he comes out. If he’s flat or weak, C-ya!! Cut your ties take the media hit and that’s one more slot.

Speakin’ of Clyde helping out with the Defense–that’s what Zeke said he would do as his primary job last summer. Looks like he failed as the D was not there. There’s something to be said about bringing back the old NYK warriors for whatever its worth. Look at the NY Yankees. They keep that winning tradition at the forefront and bring back their former stars as coaches and trainers during the spring and get them involved in the business of the team. Monty has done completely the opposite so that he can put his ABS stamp on the team and cock-block everybody else. WTF??? GTFOH Monty and stop cock-blocking our NY heroes. You were an Indiana and Detroit hero. Just because you’re PNG in Detroit does not mean that Clyde, the Big Fella, Oak, H2O, Pearl, etc. should not come back home and reclaim NYK pride. Just bloggin’

  135. We know the only coach you’ll be happy with is Thomas because he your ideal coach, a coach who never makes the playoffs, a coach who abuses his staff and has to pay for his mistreatment of a female co-worker. And a coach who wants to be gm so he can screw up in two diferent jobs. I think its funny how everyone says that Thomas drafts well, but then Thomas the coach rarely plays the players that Thomas the GM recently drafted.

I’ll ask Peace a question, whom sould the Knicks hire as coach. If you say Thomas should stay, then you’re saying you want to lose for 3-5 more years.
