Knicks coach Isiah Thomas offers up pointers on life

March 14, 2008 – 9:31 am

In addition to his current responsibilities as GM and head coach of the New York Knicks, Isiah Thomas is also now working as a life coach, apparently.

  3. Why is ABS running her mouth after “settling” for $11.6? Didn’t the Knicks management prepare a confidentiality agreement with heras a precondition to the settlement? WTF? $11.6 plus the right to ridicule, and you had no evidence to substantiate your case? Now you get to attempt a comeback with the archenemy, claiming Paxson is “a man of character”? WTF????

By HarleminMD on Mar 14, 2008 at 1:46 pm

  4. She got $11.6 million and she still sounds bitter. She probably would not have seen that amount of money in 10 years of indentured service. Yet, she still is trying to destroy. She got a nest egg! Why continue to complain? Her character is not proving to be so outstanding. If I reeived $11.6 million on a case that I could not prove in a normal court proceeding, I would gloat privately.

  5. Harlem MD,
ABS is proving that “you are what your name is”: ABS. Within that
story I also see the root cause of the whole problem. From Lives’
Blame Game, I did not “Herd” on the blame to JD on the ABS issue.
The ABS issue falls on Mills–he brought in the ABS and could not
    control/manage the ABS.
The MSM is helping ABS with the job search after their dime
on the trial. The lawyers got their 33.3% and “media advisory” got
theirs too. I know YOU of all Defenders know what’s good on that
    tip. ;-)

  6. Steady is right…….again

The MSM wants IT out and are willing to dig up ABS to help their cause.

  11. Hah - giving support to Anucha. i was wondering what the so-called “MSM” was doing, since they obviously aren’t bothering to cover any news stories that might negatively impact the Obamessiah. =)

DLT - i disagree with you on Jerome. It’s time to start him and showcase him for anyone foolish enough to be interested. He might re-injure that soft tissue foot thing he has in heavy minutes, which would be great for us, cuz if he pulled a Rony Seikaly / Jim McIlvane we get an insurance settlement (who cares) and a league salary cap exemption if he retires (best case scenario).

i know it is just plain wrong to actively wish for an injury to a player, to a Knicks’ player no less, but still. I’m trying to get my mindset in a Marxist/Socialist frame of mind BEFORE Barack Hussein Obama becomes CIC, and a James injury would best serve the collective.

  12. @Harlem MD & STEADY,

I read ABS’S comments in the New York Times, New York Post, Foxsports, and the AP,and it reminded how the Men Who make the Rules and the Surreal Script Writers, use imagery and pinpoint timing to revise a common theme universally. Help me out here, tell me you GUYS are reading Elle Magazine, and very few sports enthusiast do read that Mag…except WOMEN

Sort of Reminds me of the 3am Ad which was racial and not about nat’l security (where were the men in the ad; when was the last time a terriost attacked the US at night, and the White House with a pciket fence represented the WHITE HOUSE …Duh) to appeal to working class caucasians and southerners in Ole Miss, and the recent spat concerning Obama’s retired pastor Jeremiah Wright’s Radical comments (If you Know Pastor right, he didn’t say anything other men of conscious haven’t said like Mr. Mandela. Many of these commentswhich were made in 2001, 2004, 2006, and some recent; Prime Examples of MSM’S basic Tit for Tat reporting in resposne to the Ferraro’s comments, and the coverage of ABS’S comments from an article in a Girlie Magazine to denounce, reject, and repudiate one Isiah ‘Monty’ Thomas for his abysmal track record and her resounding endorsement of John Paxson the Personification of White Integrity and Sound Franchise Sports Management…

Read the Tea Leaves…this is foolishness…SPEAK TRUTH TO WISDOM! I hope ALL OF YOU ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO America the Beautiful…

  17. Good evening defenders.

I heard a conversation on ESPN regarding the 20 game winning streak the Rockets managed to amass. The interview was with an NBA analyst who cited to the words of the Rockets Coach Rick Adelman, who basically talked about the importance of staying the course and not panicking, like they were early in the season, when they were barely above the mendoza line. The analyst also went on to note the difference in coach styles between Van Gundy, and Adelman, might have been conducive to the Rockets surge by pointing out that Van Gundy’s grind it out style wore down on players, while Adelman’s more personable approach set in better with the players, and resulted in a fresher team that was willing and wanting to play for each others and the coach.

Interesting, sounds like what Isiah claims to have tried to do with the Knicks as head coach.

I think the trouble is that the current Roster of Knicks never got that nasty pill of a slavedriver through their veins to realize and come to appreciate a laid back coaching approach. Larry Brown was in and out, and no coach during the Isiah Regime either cracked the whip or got an opportunity to crack the whip, and that was followed by Monty the lovable coach. Go figure you need to shear the steel under the heat of a task master before the temper that blade with the mellow approach of a players coach.

That never really happend for the Knicks.

    What a shame.

  25. @ Peace, post #22…

I agree, that mock draft is a joke…Mareese Speights??? WTF…

Speaking of the draft, did anyone see the GTown/WVa game? Roy Hibbert has really increased his stock with his performance tonight.

I used to think he was a big dufus, but this kid showed me something against a really good squad tonight. One example was after a defensive rebound, he was sprinting back down court and you could see him telling the guard to get him the rock in the post. He promptly set up, got a wide base and put his arm up (us point guards love when our “bigs” present a big target on the post), got the rock, dropped-stepped and turned scored, plus got fouled. But the best part was that after he scored, he started bangin’ his chest and talkin’ to the Gtown faithful!! I was floored!! He always seemed so stoic, almost Herman Munster-like. In addition, he scored on an assortment of hook shots (with both hands) and put-backs, and his defensive instincts are the best this side of Ewing and Matumbo.

He’s no Ewing, but he’s definitely an upgrade offensively over Dikembe.

He’ll be around when we pick. Should we take him or pass?

We should be able to get a serviceable pg in the second round, if we have a second round pick, or through free-agency.

Someone mentioned Duhon? He’s definitely serviceable.

    @Steady

The Big O has been a real man’s MAN from his Player of the Year days at Cincinati, and throughout his STELLAR PRO career…Mr. Triple Double Himself. I remember when he popped Jerry Sloan for kicking his teammate in Milwaukee in the head during a televised game, then punked Tom Boerwinkle with a bow to the throat…Bob Love nor Chet Walker moved a muscle…They knew what was good…He was outspoken on issues of race and Money (He filed suit against the NBA regarding their anti-trust laws, It was called the Robertson Suit I beleive in 69 or 70, and claimed the system was like slavery, and Free Agency was changed and the flow of dough trickled down just a little; he like Spencer Haywood challenged the status quo…Unlike his Boy Wayne Embry, he was not and still is not willing to play the game…The Big O is a regular in town during Bobby Mitchell’s HOF’S Golf Tournament out at Lansdowne in Northern Virginia…Harewood or General, please correct me if I’m wrong…

Regarding your comment about a “game changer”, is there one in this year’s draft class at the center position? Who’s the best center coming out in your opinion? The mock drafts have us selecting either Brook Lopez or Eric Gordon. Who would you select?

  30. @Bronx

If I had my druthers, we would pick the most prolific PG available. Looking for a Chris Paul or Baron Davis type player. Rose is truly in that league and I think Augustin has the chops but his body type disturbs me a bit. It does not appear he can add the necessary weight. Of the 2 guards, Mayo would be my choice because of his multiple skills (rebounding, and passing, and his Defensive ability is much better than Gordon right now). The kid Harden at Arizona State is not bad either. BUT ‘MR. LOVE’ IS THE SURE ENOUGH TRUTH!

BRONX, What is up with MD’S recruiting the last couple of years? Not a Blue Chip in the Stash…You always have to get at least one…Wait until you see this KID Greg Monroe that GTOWN signed. 6′10, 235, left-handed, great handled, great passer, good rebounder, and a nice touch and feel for the game. He’ll start as soon as he drops off his luggage in the his Suite on Campus. The question is will he stay? And, based on how JT3 is recruiting for 09, the probability is 2 to 3 years maximum.

  31. @Cooleyhigh,
I knew you would have the intel. That lawsuit would definitely qualify him for the Lil’ General S-List. When you look @ guys like Embry and the Clippers’ mascot, you can see what it takes to stay in the man’s good graces. If you live righteously, your life will be righteous. Every person has their price. Contrarian that JD may be, I still foresee him doing a “known quantity” because the flagship sails with known/true/bleed-proof colors.

    @ Bronx MD,
I know the Force was wit ya when you typed Hubert as a DUPHUS. He lumbers and labors down the court. He will need to show some consitency in the tourney to further raise his stocks because on some nights he does not show-up. He needs to do many “oblong ball” drills. He’s got Lee handles: SUSPECT. I hear ya ’bout how we PGs like a commanding Big Fella who squares up nicely with the D on his wallet pocket. The few times I saw him with my own pink eyes, he was cockeyed off the right hash mark. I’d prefer to see him slightly off the window on the right side of the bubble. He gets pushed almost to the baseline thereby killing his angle. You can coach to fix that. Still, that makes him a plodding Big maybe suitable/salvaged for late 1st or maybe 2nd round. Just bloggin’ unless I’m right.

PG is our most glaring need for now. Don’t think Rose or Mayo will be available when our number is called, but I’d take Augustine in a skinny min. There’s something about that kid….and as a pg myself, I know it when i see it. This kid is a leader of men!!

Spiced ham you say? Then he needs a full summer of iso time pickin’ cloves out da roast in order to improve his handles (hand-eye coordination). I watched the Louisville game while I was on the treadmill (at the gym) and almost split my wig on account of Roy’s play. Recall when that full court press almost caused G’Town the game? Guys couldn’t even get the ball inbound for play. Remember how Taz made his name in the NIT Tournament? Roy Hibbert is of pedigree or from a school with lineage so he’ll be OK. I mean seriously, Othella Harrington is still in the league and so is Sweetney (I think). Roy D Hibbert will be ago and with many coins to have much spiced hams and glazed donuts. :-)

  39. @BRONX & STEADY,

Don’t sleep on Hibbert! His skill level is much better than you think! During the Summer when he’s balling against the Ole Crew he holds his own. His foot speed is questionable, but he will be a decent back-up center in the NBA.

Now Augustin is a true baller and an excellent leader, plus a sharp kid. You don’t survive Katrina, have you life turned upside and have the understanding Freshman year he had last year. The kid is a baller, but I am just not sure he can add the strength necessary to play his game which is rough and tumble, along with his sweeet J on the next level. Can he take the hit going to the hoop, and can guard at the next level.

Davidson is the biggest sleeper out there right now (Curry’s son is the truth and this team has beaten some really good teams….Butler is legit too, extremely disciplined and tough as nails. Their backcourt of Graves and Green is underrated, and in the tourney backcourts RULE. Winthrop, George Mason, Western Kentucky, and Siena are no jokes either. All of these teams are deep and full of 4 year starters and bench players. Each of them could beat a higher seed! Drake and Oral Roberts have a shot too…They are my sleepers…

San Diego, American, Austin Peay, Mount St. Mary’s, and Belmont are one and done…I hope that helps…

    Keep it POPPIN

  56. You want intel? Here you go!

“He will be 70 years old this November, but time and age haven’t made the Big O any smaller.

At the height of his career, he became president of the NBA Players Union and sued for the right to free agency. It was this action, along with what Robertson believes to have been endemic racism in sports, that cost him his career. Forced into retirement at 34, he was never offered the management or coaching positions routinely given to players of his caliber.

The only player in the history of the NBA to average a triple-double an entire season reflects on the game that made him famous. Over his first five years, the 6-5, 210-pound Robertson cumulatively averaged a triple-double: 30.3 points per game, 10.6 assists per game and 10.4 rebounds per game. Over six years: 30.4 ppg, 10.7 apg, 9.95 rpg. Seven years: 30.4 ppg, 10.7 apg, 9.4 rpg.

Oscar Robertson served as President of the NBA Players Association from 1966-74. Putting his own career on the line, he filed suit on behalf of the NBAPA in 1970 to halt a merger of the NBA with the American Basketball Association until free agency issues could be resolved. The “Oscar Robertson Rule,” enacted six years later via a legal settlement between the NBAPA and the NBA, paved the way for free agency and the lucrative salaries enjoyed by many of today’s players. The Big O was also one of five founders of the National Basketball Retired Players Association and served as its president for many years.
He is asked to go more places these days, certainly more than he was in the years immediately following the NBA players’ union victory over the owners in 1976. That was a lawsuit, Oscar Robertson vs. the NBA, that won for NBA players the right of free agency. It changed the game forever.

Robertson’s name, and part of his legacy, was on the suit because he was the players’ representative for the union, and worked closely with the late attorney Larry Fleisher, even in the two years after he retired, to take on the league.

“I took the job because I was one of the few players who couldn’t be intimidated,” he says. “Lots of guys worried they’d be cut if they were player reps. Some of them were.”

He tells stories of $8 per diems, beds too short for players to sleep in, players knowing all the $2 steakhouses in NBA cities. Stories of injured players, drugged up in their hospital beds, being asked to sign release papers by the team before the drugs wore off.

Oscar Robertson is generally considered the greatest all-around player in the history of basketball. In 2000 he was named “Player of the Century” by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Today Mr. Robertson is one of the nation’s leading small business owners, with interests in document management services, banking, chemicals, processed foods, construction, and media.”

You’re probably right! This guy doesn’t have the business smarts, experience, people skills or NBA experience to handle a team as talented as our Knicks. He sure doesn’t have the business acumen or inte”grit”ty of a J. Dolan,or S. Mills.Yeah, we don’t want him around our young guys. You know, spoiling them!

    Good lookin’ out Cooley!

  60. Steady and Tman @ 58-59

My wholehearted concurrence on those ops!

I don’t know if it’s me but every time I play the ESPN mock draft, the Knicks fall into either the 1st or 2nd spot every fourth or second turn. I might go to the draft if I have such a good luck effect.

Also in that mock draft ESPN has us picking Rose when we’re at the 1st or 2nd slot.

Hope it happens we need a floor general.

Good convos Defenders’ your historical acumen of those who came before is 2nd to none!

  61. If I can revive the troops again and go Full Force–If we go by our Definsider (Peaceman) then the intel is the NYK will have the real McCoy come next summer. Don’t know if you would agree Ole Soul but my pink eye sees Beasley as Artest 2.0 or Baby Artest–as opposed to Artest lite. So if you’re gettin’ Artest (a known quantity) then why roll them bones. You got Chandler with some similar acumen/aplomb/ability (after you send him to the shooting range for summer school–2K shots/day from all over the gym). Monty is flashing a PG card so maybe he goes Chicago Combo.

Defenders, since they’re reading us, I say we start doing some Op Sec (Operation Security). In my line of work, you gotta be stealth and hold all the cards to the vest. Don’t get like Monty and flashing them all over the place, Clintoning with 3 Kings–Lies, Fool, and Pain. Still, I know it is SOO cool to be the one to drop it here to the community. That’s why we’re all here I suppose. Just bloggin’.

  64. Yo defenders an implied schism appears to exist in the Knicks lockeroom.

In an article by Steve “Old Man” Ademack of the Bergen Record regarding the playing time and development of the rookie Wilson Chandler, Ademack cites to a statement by Malik, the Rose with bitter thorns, about his opinion of the rookie. But the answer suggest his or perhaps the teams mindset towards the rest of the regular season.

‘”He’s kind of, not lost out there, but unsure of himself,” Rose said. “So I tell him, especially this point of the year, we’re not really playing for playoff seeding or anything, just go out and just play aggressive and confident. … Just do what you did at DePaul.”‘

But Ademack also cites Thomas on the following matter.

“Chandler hasn’t exactly lit it up offensively as a starter, shooting 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) and averaging four points, and Thomas admits walking a fine line trying to get him experience while attempting to win games.”

This suggest to me that while Thomas is playing the rookie while still balancing/flopping on his objective of reaching the playoffs, the statements of at least one player in the lockeroom suggest that some may have given up on any postseason dreaming.

Then again Rose’s statements were more about “playoff seeding” and not a playoff spot, which if the Knicks were to sneak in would likely only be an 8th seed.

    So go figure.

I will say that at least old man Ademack writes about items other than the “circus atmosphere” at MSG.

  67. O&B,
With the Arrival of Artest next year Chandler will be else where!
I hate to agree with Folly, but we cut the wrong rookie! Nichols should have stayed!

Chandler hasn’t exactly lit it up offensively as a starter, shooting 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) and averaging four points, and Thomas admits walking a fine line trying to get him experience while attempting to win games.

Sorry he’s a Mike Sweeny 2! Of course that’s just my opinion!

  68. Check it out Peaceman and Defenders.

The Chicago Bulls wouldn’t touch ABS with a 10 foot weasal proof pole.

    No new hire:

A story in Friday’s New York Post stated that former Knicks community relations director Anucha Browne Sanders had an “exploratory conversation with the Bulls regarding an NBA return.”

A jury awarded Sanders $11.6 million in her sexual harassment lawsuit against the Knicks and team president Isiah Thomas in October. She is now working as an associate athletic director at the University of Buffalo.

Bulls vice president of marketing Steve Schanwald said the team has great respect for Sanders, but no conversations have taken place regarding employment with the Bulls and there are no positions available.
