Raptors at Knicks

by knicksdefense on February 22, 2008

First home game in a while and its snowing outside (tonight it is supposed to rain). Tipoff is slated for 7:30pm at MSG. Bosh, Ford, Calderon, this is a good team. Tonight will be a challenge.

I guess there are many interpretations to the Knicks’ inactivity at the trade deadline. When you’re at the bottom of the Atlantic, and you get blown out by 40 the night before, it would seem that a move needs to be made. Still, nothing came through, so the Knicks will continue with what they have. I am glad we didn’t get a player like Kenyon Martin (high injury risk, even higher risk to salary cap).

So with around 28 games remaining in the season, and the Knicks currently out of contention for a playoff spot, we blog forward.

*Note: if Dolan does want to replace Isiah Thomas, and I have no idea if he does, because I am not him, but if he does intend to replace Isiah, why wait? Is Dolan trying to make Isiah look bad, they way he did with Larry Brown making him go to the draft camp in Orlando despite no longer having any say in the organization towards a draft choice? If you made the change now, you could at least make a 28-game audition for next season out of the remaining games. Maybe Dolan isn’t going to get rid of Isiah Thomas? Who really knows for sure?

Top NBA Draft Prospects in the ‘Other Conferences’ (Part One: #1-#5)
October 29, 2007
Eric Maynor seemingly came out of nowhere in his sophomore season to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to the CAA tournament championship, an NCAA tournament upset against Duke, and then a near upset of Pittsburgh in overtime. His stock has since soared and he’s now considered among the nation’s top collegiate point guards.

Comparable to former Texas A&M star and current Atlanta Hawk Acie Law IV, Law embodies a lot of the reasons why Maynor is such an attractive prospect. Both possess good size for an NBA point guard, above-average quickness, and a penchant for making big plays down the stretch. However, what sets Maynor apart is that he is a true pass-first point guard, and even though he will likely be the top offensive option on any given night, he never forces offense unnecessarily.

Maynor is also a good scorer, though, efficient slashing, creating his own shot in the mid-range, or spotting up from the perimeter. He is not the fastest player in the world compared to most NBA point guards, and his first-step could best be described as above average, but regardless, Maynor gets a good majority of his offense from inside the perimeter. Slashing to the hoop, he uses his superior size and ability to absorb contact to his advantage. He also draws a lot of fouls and his 5.1 free throw attempts per game ranks in the Top 10 of DX Database prospects for the 2008 draft; he makes those foul shots 77.8% of the time.

His 42.4% field-goal percentage should improve for him to become a true NBA point guard prospect, but he has a good-looking mid-range game. Using a variety of hesitation moves, he is able to create enough space for himself to get off his mid-range jump shots. His mid-range jumpshot, which he takes about as often as he slashes to the basket, shows his mechanics: good elevation, quick release, and the ability to pull up from just about anywhere inside 17 feet. His form would improve from further out if he had a more consistent release point and, like a few other prospects in these previews, would be benefited tremendously by not wasting motion by kicking his feet while releasing his shot. The same can be said about his 3-point shot, an already improving part of Maynor’s offensive repertoire, but as exposed by his 39% on 59 attempts (up from 20% on 15 attempts), clearly one in need of significant work. The worst part about his perimeter shot is the wasted motion as he always kicks his feet out while releasing, and tends to push the shot out more than he strokes it. Maynor has the instincts and potential to become a good jump-shooter on the NCAA level, he just has to work on his form.

Maynor would also benefit by tightening his handle. Last season, he had a very high and sometimes sloppy dribble that prevented him from maximizing his potential as a slasher and mid-range jump-shooter. He also has a tendency to drive left far more than he drives right. He loves to use screens and is absolutely terrific running the pick and roll, showing great timing and decision making alternating between feeding the screener and scoring the ball himself. Being able to punish defenders going underneath the screen with a more effective jump-shot will make him absolutely lethal with this play.

However, the most advanced part of Maynor’s offensive game is his ability to dictate tempo and control the VCU offense through the point guard position. He is a very good passer, throwing fast and crisp passes just about anywhere on the floor. He is a creative distributor and even a tad ambitious at times. However, he is not careless, turnover prone, and he rarely forces any of his passes. As a sophomore he averaged 6.4 assists in 35 minutes per game, but only 2.1 Turnovers. The resulting 3.07 assist/turnover ratio ranked highest among all prospects last season, including Mike Conley Jr., Jared Jordan, and Tywon Lawson. That being said, Maynor is a mature player who plays with patience and poise that often eludes young point guards. Watching a VCU game, it was interesting to look at his understanding and execution of the offense. He tries to feed his big men just as often as his perimeter players and the resulting balance allows him to generate offense for himself. However, what really makes Maynor stand out against the other lead guards in his class is that he is not playing with a team that is very naturally talented and he is still considered to be a legitimate prospect. Maynor helps his team play to just about all of their potential and translates this potential into wins.

DLee should start. But I don’t know who should be paired with him to start the game.

Would it be Edwina or would it be Z-Bo?

Z-Bo’s the warrior, and would probrably make more of an impact of the bench.

Edwina is a baby who needs to be coddled and might get lost if not incorporated on some degree early on.

Still Lee should start alongside one of them b/c the Edwina Z-Bo tandem hasn’t worked this year.

Boy did Draft express peg Mardy???? I’m looking at late rounders past and present cause we will pick in the
later 1rst round because we are going to be in the playoffs.

O & B,
Let’s agree on the Axiom: Players PLAY, Coaches COACH and the FANS know EVERYTHING!
With that said, I don’t believe the Ei-ZBo pairing has not worked (yet). I believe the ZBo-Curry pairing has not been properly coached or presented on gameday. I saw some Ooops to Curry (on the low) from Zach (on the high). That’s a playoff preview (if Monty’s promise holds). We’ve said “the culprit shall sit”. Most of the games I watched, I’ve seen the coach sit more than the 39 minutes Ei sat against Toronto in NY. ;-)

But seriously Defenders, I strongly believe that (but for the unknown NBA script that Monty, Dolan and Stern all know) a different coach would have a different outcome with this cast of characters on the NYK.

Say D L T,
A fellow Defender just removed the Just Bloggin’ from my #197 by posting #204. If Peaceman can find the EXPERTS saying the same thing, then I guess we’re not so off base afterall with what we’ve got. Come summer or what may, maybe the cards get shuffled. Steady as IT goes.

I saw a piece by Berger speculating that Thorn or Kiki should come in to rebuild after Monty. Another case of personnel management through the MSM. Berger failed to get Ron Ron here despite his Herculean efforts this summer. Now Kiki? And what would they do first–trade Stephon so that they can get under the cap to pursue LBJ, Kobe or DWade? Brilliant! Why can’t IT stay and do that while not regressing with a blow-up? I submit here and now that if Monty replaces that King of Pain card with a King of Diamonds or a King of Hearts by getting in the playoffs, he will not be going anywhere. It will be steady as IT goes. You’re on the corner Monty and we’re all lookin’ out for the Po-Po!

Hmmmmm. Good Morning Defenders. Another beautiful day. Another chance to be the best we can be and to correct yesterday’s mistakes. Wonderful.

I’m not around much today, but I wanted to give you a shout out.

Peace, I really like the pre-draft evaluation of Mardy. On one hand you wish Zeke played him more, but Mardy fell behind over the summer and has been stinking up the joint. Still, Zeke stuck with the vet Q, who was also a major stinker, until he got part of his groove back. Zeke really stuck with Q too long, but Q is looking a lot better these days. I guess he should since Zeke gave him his summer training back during the regular season.

Zeke may still pick up a point, but I don’t see anyone out there. Tyronne Lue is being batted around, but do we really need another smallish guard who averages barely two assists per game. (Pass-first guard is certainly a shorthand misnomer. Essentially you want a well-rounded decision-maker. I wouldn’t call Chauncy or Parker pass-first guards. They were not total ball hogs and they “learned” to maximize their skills and the resources called “teammates.” They moved the ball around, but became effective because they could score and create their own shot and move without the ball. Even Kidd who may be considered a “pass-first” point guard is effective because his skill set gives him choices. He knows how to make choices and sometimes that requires him to “shoot-first.” Steady raises a good question, which I also wondered about: What championship guard is actually a “pass-first point.” Nash hasn’t won a championship. Yes he is as likely to get as many assists as points on occassion, but he too can shoot. Note Marbury fans that Stephon did not consider himself a PFPG. He considered himself a shooting playmaker. There perception met reality, but only part of the way.)

_______________________________

CF, there were absolutely no assumptions about you in my question. It was meant to be a straightforward question simply to encourage you to give us the gift of your rationale behind why you would oppose an absolute total ban on a word because it is offensive and hurtful to others, but you would encourage someone to respond to words by tossing water. I am interested in the logic, if any, behind encouraging a physical response in a war of words as opposed to the response of a single word. I am interested in the rationale behind an all out ban on a word regardless of context because some consider the word hurtful in any context versus the support of a “violent” act of any degree which is unquestionably hurtful and a potential escalation of violence or discord.

While there may be an assumed value judgment in the question (I don’t think there is), I am simply interested in seeing how you reconcile this conundrum.

______________________________

I am a magic-number fan. I watch my team play for victories, not losses. Therefore, I will do so until the last bit of effort is sucked out of the entire team (not just E-City). That encourages me to watch the other teams to and yesterday was only a fair day as only Indiana and Atlanta lost. Washington, Milwaukee, Philly and New Jersey (who beat Indiana) won. However, only Milwaukee won a game they should have lost. (I think Denver is done and Carmelo and AI are probably disappointed that they did not keep up with the Jonses, Kobes, Naashes, Nowitzkes and Jameses during the trading game). We need New Jersey to lose.

As it stands now, the Knicks really need to be prepared for Atlanta and Toronto. We have four games to play against Atlanta which is really in bad shape with coach Mike Woodson not having a clue. He is being hailed by some as the worst coach in the NBA. Two more games against Toronto. We can beat them, but we never know which Knicks team will hit the floor. They play like they have alzheimers — they quikcly forget to apply what they knew or learned the game before. In the case of Jamario Moon it was more like the possession before. How can you not get up on Moon and force him to drive after he keeps popping those tres.

The Knicks collective basketball IQ and confidence is not exceptional. Another word for it is chemistry and if there is one thing both Zeke and Dolan may have over us armchair GM’s, its that they understand that chemistry, confidence and BBall IQ take time to win. The issue is how much time and we keep saying “Time Is Up.” Dolan says “Time Is Money and I’m not spending more than I have to.” Isiah says “Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’ into the future.” In other words, DOlan controls how much time he is willing to give the process and Isiah will be utlimately proven right on some level if he is given enough time.

Given enough time, it will be proven that this team does not need to be totally rebuilt. He has accumulated a lot of talent. Someone needs to put it together. The Thorns and Vandies and the like are just people looking for a good job. All armchair GMS can look at the position of the Knicks now and should see that being the Knicks GM would be a great job — even with Dolan as the Boss. I want Dolan as a boss. I hate his media policy, but if he is going to give me the cash to do what I would otherwise be doing on a newwork. Sign me up. Oh, yeah I’ll talk about ow tough a job it is. Oh yeah, I’ll talk about how badly Isiah funked it up. Why? Because I want to look like a savior. And I know, I really know that I only need a couple of pieces and some stewing of the ones I got. What do I need? — a point to direct the show? a taller inside presence to give me a modicum of defense (I can get that with the mid-level exception)? and maybe one marquee player (thank you Stephon, arrivederci?).

Some of you guys keep claiming the Knicks have no value or no tradeable players. I don’t like talking trades, but it I did, I would say “get real.” Look at what has been traded for what over the last two years. Money, expiring contracts and one dimensional players for perceived “quality.” Most of you didn’t think we could trade Stevie Franchise. He is gone. And no matter how much you dogg the “Cancerous Black Hole” he a helluva lot better than Stevie Francis and more useful then Channing Frye (I liked Channing). Zach is a playa. He definitely has limitations, but if he is going to pass the ball at all and learn to trust his teammates, I want that guy on my side. He can play some ball.

Anyway, we have tradeable parts. We need to up their value. Curry’s is at rock bottom, but anybody that knows anything knows it’s in his head and at worse, he has a few more good offensive years in him. That’s good for at least 25 teams that need a big man and don’t care about defense. Curry is tradeable. Heck, Cleveland traded Hughes after allowing him one opportunity to score a bunch of points. What do you think Hughes is worth? More than Crawford? Blogga, please.

Don’t get too excited about all those GMs that want to come in and turn this place around. How many good GMs are out there right now? Larry Bird will let you know that this is a three step process — trades, draft and summer. It takes time. You’re dreaming if you believe that Thorn did a great job with the Nets. If the Nets were in New York both Thorn and Lawrence would be gone. Gone. How many GMs out there have won a championship or put together a team that we would be satisfied with. Don’t let those wannabes sweet talk you.

Get rid of Zeke? Sure? But do it because someone says they should tear up this team and start anew? Be very, very afraid and meet me back here for this same discussion four years from now.

O&B, I like the idea of “frequent Blogga points” or “mass blogger minutes.” I’m going to use that a little later.

Vic Corbitt

Provocative and mostly true. Welcome back. The season is not over until April 16th and I bet we win at least one game from the Celtics. I can’t imagine Doc playing all of his big guns on April 14th. (LOL). In fact if we are one game from the playoffs, I bet Doc Rivers tanks the game just to get us in the first round. (LMAO). That would be really funny, especially if the alignment of the planets is such that this is a New York surprises New England in sports time-period .

Defenders

We can beat the Raptors tonight. To borrow the confidence of Peaceman. They will be “Clawless in Toronto.” Or we will experience “Raptor Rapture.”

Will we, really? I have no freaking idea. But Toronto is playoff bound but they will be bounced quickly. A little perimeter defense will knock them off. (I bet Philly-Toronto games are fun to watch.) If we play perimeter D (force them to drive), body up Bosh (Jeffries, Rose, Q, Balk) and stop Calderon/Ford at the free throw line, we can win this game. We could use a little help from the refs, if they would call all those fouls on those hits taken by Zach. We can win this game. Then we can talk about Charlotte and Atlanta. Again Zeke needs to sit Curry or Randolph (I say Curry) ASAP since he intends to start him. I would still play Curry though to change the tempo and rest my “main” guys. (It makes no sense to talk about “strarters” v. the “Bench” the way Zeke coaches. It’s “main guys” versus “support guys” v. “Get them a train ticket this summer guys.”)

On Crawford

You gentlemen might as well stop whining about Crawford being a sixth man. Ain’t happening for at least a couple of years. He is a man on the rise regardless of his shooting percentage and his non-playoff playing streak. Not being in the playoffs is not his fault. Heck, who has he been playing for and with. Since when is getting into the playoffs a one-man proposition.

Crawford averages 41 minutes and scores 20.6 ppg, on 41% shooting has about 5 assist and 1 steal per game and hits 33% from the arc. He is the 12th highest scoring guard albiet with a lousy percentage but it is better than Hinriich, Tinsley, Arenas, Alston, Durant, Hughes and Alston’s percentage. He has an 86% free throw average (34th among guards) but shoot more frethrows than most. He hits the tre at a better clip than Iverson, Wade, Arena, McGrady, Brandon Roy and Monta Ellis. He gets only $8 million this year and has an option to sign for just over 9 million in after next season. I want to be his agent. He will not be a sixth man anytime soon, so forget about it.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the sixth–man proposition. I don’t know the answer. But it doesn’t matter because he is not Ben Gordon and as long as he is on the Knicks he will be a starter. It’s about more than scoring. It is also about leadership. And when he is traded to that West Coast Team (I’m guessing Nellie would love to have him), he will be in shooting heaven regularly scoring 20-30 points on 40%

I like Crawford but I am not his booster. I’m just suggesting that you be real when you talk about him. Sixth man? Not likely.

I love these quotes from the Raptors:

Said Moon, the Raptors swingman: “One time I switched out on (Crawford) and coach was yelling, `Get up on him! Get up on him!’ I thought I was close enough, but obviously I wasn’t because he pulled up for a three and nailed it.”
“One on one, (Crawford) has the ball on the string,” said Parker in homage.

Lives say:

“I am interested in the rationale behind an all out ban on a word regardless of context because some consider the word hurtful in any context versus the support of a “violent” act of any degree which is unquestionably hurtful and a potential escalation of violence or discord.”

I’m a lil cranky this morning, still annoyed at being took last night. The missus and I thot we’d take in a lil slice o’ NY, payin pricey tickets for “The Harlem Gospel Choir.” I thought something was up when the program said the group started in 1986. Then when ten, elebben people (all women except for two men, not including a keyboardist and drummer) shuffled onto the stage wearing black outfits (individually store bought, not a uniform, btw) with some kind of kente-patterned bib, I was pretty sure this was not the Harlem Boys Choir we were expecting.

And boy, they were not and how. It was quite the rag-tag unprofessional bunch who I’m sure make most of their money based on folk confusing the two groups (tho, yes, we certainly should’ve known better. my wife bought the tix and neither of us paid enough attention – the ad just had a pic of a man lookin conductorish). Mebbe they shipped us the ‘B’ or ‘C’ team, but anyway you slice it, they were TURRIBLE. So, yaddayaddayadda, we left at intermission.

So Lives, i’m not going to respond really since you’ve offered a false dialectic. In my opinion I’ve made it quite clear that my beef over that pman incident was not about banning use of a specific word in any context. You may wanna take that up with Knicksdefense, that wasn’t the crux of my argument (tho of course banning the n-word is certainly related). I’ve stated my position repeatedly so I am truly mystified as to how you could come away with the conclusion you’ve drawn up here. Are u being a cheeky monkey again?

You’ve also gone ahead and framed my viewpoint over the n8-zbo incident as support for escalation of violent acts.

Alls I say is check both sides, look at the balance and see if one side grossly outweighs the other.

I suggest you carefully reread my previous notes (esp the n-word-kike-hook-nose one) and if you can find some specific passages that support what you claim, I’ll answer those.

Pass me by

There is that stereotype of the point guard who isn’t a good shooter but does have great court vision and excellent passing skills. Earl Watson is probably the modern exemplar (plus he plays great D). But in today’s game there’s are a number of great guards who can both score at an amazing clip AND pass the rock. These are guys who can easily score 20+points on 45%+ shootin AND dish 8, 10, 12+ assists on any given night.

I think what some may be saying is that we don’t necessarily need a great shoot+pass guard, but if we could get a guy who can at least consistently deliver 7+ assists a night, we’d be in great shape. I tend to agree with that sentiment. Marbury was the best we had and even he’d dropped off to around 6assts/game, which doesn’t cut it anymore.

I also agree that the team has pieces of value. It’s either a question of Dolan cutting off zeke’s trade supply or that teams were insistent on (badly) ripping off the knicks. I tend to lean toward the former theory cuz zeke’s shown that he can find ways to wheel and deal to both get what he feels we need and get rid of what he feels we don’t. There’s 29 other teams out there, just hard to imagine it was next to impossible to find a half-way reasonable deal out there with zeke’s trade history to date.

Game before last, I found new respect for Crawford. He looks so herky-jerky but man he can flat out ball on the offensive end. He has value. IF I HAD A CHOICE he would still not start for me, but he’d be a pretty awesome weapon-x off the bench those nights he’s on.

Peace an’ Dax hair grease. It’s sunday, go hug somebody.

I didn’t even realize Jamal hit the three better than all those players.
Also didn’t realize that Jamal was shooting a better percentage than the other

Say what you want about Jamal but when he gets hot it’s beautiful to watch.
I’ve said here plenty of times we should trade him but the longer he stays
the more I like his game. I just don’t like the fact he doesn’t have a post game
and his defense is non existant. He really needs to work on those 2 phases of
his game. That’s why I would rather have Carter instead of Jamal. When the
game is on the line Jamal is great but you can’t live and die with a jump shot
for the last possesion every time. Vince takes the ball to the hole and you
know he will either make the lay up or draw the foul. He has that uncanny knack like
Paul Pierce and Wade to draw fouls and get to the line.
I really think the Nets will be better with Kidd gone. The Nets got the best
part of that deal by far. Not even close!!!!

I haven’t seen the youtube about Derrick. I’m going to search for it now.
Clinton is really showing her true side by attacking Obama but he is taking the
high road and beating her at her own game.
I think she’s desperate and she knows her campaign is on it’s last legs.
March 4th will be the end of the Clinton run.
Remember all she has to do is lose 1 state on March 4th. She HAS to win both Texas

Rhode Island and Vermont. Look for Obama to win Rhode Island but I don’t know about

Good AM Defenders!

I see a couple of the Maestros are up early sending a good word out for our BELOVED NEW YORK KNICKS and stirring the pot, allowing the Ligth to Shine in BOGLZILLA’S House.

I concur LIVES, it is truly a beautiful Sunday morning in our capital city and just thankful for the opportunity to inhale and exhale the Breath of Life. For the Defenders of Faith, regardless of how and where you offer alms, may the Master of Mysteries create in you a New Song to Sing, and fill you and yours with a JOY that is everlasting, so you never have to worry about it diminishing, because the ‘World didn’t give it you and the World can’t takee it away.” A life of ineffability…Oh how Beautiful Here ‘s a good word for those who choose to partake of it….

Today’s Quote
A man does not have to be an angel in order to be a saint.

Today’s Scripture
“Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend” (James 2:23).

Today’s Word
The All-Knowing, All-Powerful, Creator of the Universe wants to be your friend today. He wants to walk with you and talk with you and share life with you. That’s why He created you-first and foremost, for fellowship. It’s as simple as opening your heart of faith to Him. If you have faith in God today then, just like Abraham, you are God’s friend. And the Bible says that God is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. That means He is faithful. He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. He is with you always. He is mindful of you-that means He is always thinking of you. What an honor and privilege it is to be called God’s friend! Let that sink down into your heart today. The next time the enemy tries to tell you that you are alone in this world, or that no one else understands what you are going through, just say out loud, “I am a friend of God.” With God as your friend, He’ll walk forward with you down the path of victory He has prepared for you!

A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank you for being my friend today. Thank you for loving me and for being faithful to me. Help me to understand your friendship today so that I can be a better friend to those around me. Amen.

It is Game day, per my custom, GO KNICKS GO KNICKS GO KNICKS GO KNICKS GO KNICKS GO KNICKS GO KNICKS
