Trade Deadline is Today

by knicksdefense on February 21, 2008

Tough break last night getting blown out by 40 points after such a great ending just 24 hours prior, when the Knicks pulled out the overtime victory in D.C. Either there was no gas in the tank, or Philly just has New York’s number this year, blowing the Knicks out three out of four times on the season.

There were some positives in the game once you got passed the sting of the blowout. Wilson Chandler dusted off his warm-ups, cleared away the cobwebs and came in and shot 50% from the floor, including some nice drives to the basket. Chandler finished with 8 points and 1 block in 11 minutes of second half play. This kid never sees the light of day despite being the 23rd pick in the first round in 2007. I know he can help with some things, he is a shot blocker on a team with no shot blockers, and those nights when Q isn’t fully Q, I just wonder why Wilson doesn’t get an opportunity to test the NBA waters with his seldom utilized talent.

And Eddy Curry at least contributed offensively in the first half, finishing with 12 points 6 rebounds and 1 block in 24 minutes. Something is better than nothing, and we’ve been getting a whole lot of nothing from Eddy Curry lately. Unfortunately, Eddy’s scoring coincided with the early hole the Knicks dug for themselves, and once they went through that stretch of 4 straight turnovers, there was no coming back. What a difference a year makes. This time last year, I was so pissed Eddy was not on the all-star team, he deserved to be on there–he really was effective when we force-fed him the ball. Eddy is basically a non-factor when he isn’t the first option on a team. And most the NBA knows even if Eddy does get the ball everytime, he’s still not going to play defense on the other end of the court.

The game was not competitive.

So it is a matter of hours before the trade deadline is here, and I have absolutely no idea if the Knicks will make a move. Rather than try to cook up a homemade rumor, I’d like to know who you think the Knicks should keep on their roster beyond 2008. Although I like quite a few players on the Knicks, Zach, Nate, Lee, Renaldo, to name a few, I don’t think there should be any players that are off limits if you can somehow get back young, defense-oriented players, because that to me has been their greatest problem this season, the abysmal defense that allows the opponents their choice of going to the hole for an easy bucket, or shooting wide open j’s all day. The knicks must try to address this issue either by 3:00pm today, or come draft day in June.

The Knicks are on the clock.

Harlem,

you are right man. We could probably ship Crawford out but you know coach #11 aint gettin rid of player #11.

4 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Harlem,

We all wish that Deng was available. I haven’t heard that he was being shopped. Are you going on anything in particular or just a wish list trade ?

5 Charles Follymacher February 21, 2008 at 2:36 pm

yeah harlem, much as i like zbo, i can’t see an obvious benefit to chicago in that one. chitown fans’d be more than a lil irate.

25 mins left… Affy’s shorts are starting to burn (wshew!)

6 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

I’m dreaming John.

Not having a real team is making me delusional.

7 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Charles,

We would be taking on Wallace’s contract (larger than Zach). Zach gives Chicago their first post-up player. James would be a servicable backup (he can block shots).

8 knicksdefense February 21, 2008 at 2:41 pm

if no moves are made, I assume that is very bad for the 2007-2008 Knicks because the players aren’t going to be buying into the system anymore (not that they were last night) anticipating major changes in the offseason, as Stern has hinted recently.

9 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 2:43 pm

KnicksD,

With that statement, I sense a high profile GM is going to take over for IT. Stern does not participate in idle chatter.

10 knicksdefense February 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

12 minutes to go… all quiet on the eastern front.

11 Bronxboy in Md February 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Read the article on the possibility of acquiring Carlos Arroyo. That would be a great move for us!!

I always thought the kid had the moxie and ability to run a team…all he ever needed was a chance.

I’ll even go out on a limb and say I’d take him over Jameer Nelson….IMHO he’s just as tough!

I’ve been saying from the begining that the acquisition of a pg should’ve been priority one. I truly believe if we had a decent one, these “who should we trade, Zach or Curry” discussions would never take place.

What’s the use in having the Clydesdales w/o a handler? An exotic sports car if you can’t drive a stick?

Get my drift???

If we can get him w/o giving up the farm, I’d say go for it!!

12 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 2:49 pm

I meant to say Wallace’s contract average is higher than Zach’s. I’m trying to sell it.

13 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 2:50 pm

AN-TI-CIPATION is makin’ me wait.

Harlem I was hoping it wasn’t a dream. I’m with you man. What else is there to do but dream ?

14 knicksdefense February 21, 2008 at 2:50 pm

pundits are advising denver pick up artest to deal with their lack of defense.

15 Bronxboy in Md February 21, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Shyt, what about OUR lack of defense, @ 64?

16 Bronxboy in Md February 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

2 minutes left….

17 knicksdefense February 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

I hear you bronx. I guess they really don’t want to give Lee. I see it both ways. Artest provides defense that Lee does not, but Lee may be the only chip that other teams want. If they went through with that trade, Artest is not as marketable as Lee down the road.

I remember the year we got francis, they extended the trade deadline beyond 3pm. way beyond 3pm, but there is nothing on the radar, and the time is basically up.

only thing that might happen now is cavs-bulls involving larry hughes. nothing a knicks fan can really care about.

18 PaulNoize February 21, 2008 at 3:01 pm

One minute to deadline…..Monty got no moves left.

Killshot straight to the dome….Isiah Thomas Era is out like Omar (“gimpy maw-fucka”).

The King is dead – long live the King.

19 knicksdefense February 21, 2008 at 3:05 pm

gerald “birthday cake” green has been traded to houston, according to realgm.

20 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Mike: Boca Raton, FL: Why are the Bulls not going after Zach Randolph? I feel he would help their inside present

Chad Ford: (2:19 PM ET ) Character issues. That’s why a lot of teams are gun shy on Randolph.

21 Charles Follymacher February 21, 2008 at 3:06 pm

poof! Affy’s shorts burn to a crisp and i’m outta that restaurant with a quickness. harlem, well not sayin you can’t wring some good sense out of the deal, just that i don’t think it’s enough to wrest chicago’s face-o-the-organization. they like him a lot over there so it’d take a lot to justify jettisonning him.

22 Bronxboy in Md February 21, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I just saw that, KnicksD….Good trade for the Rockets.

Seems everybody’s gettin’ fed but us.

23 knicksdefense February 21, 2008 at 3:09 pm

#69–don’t they already have the real t-mac?

24 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 3:10 pm

So thats it ????? All that speculation and no deal ? Does this mean that Monty has played his last card ?

25 DaVonn Obama Jefferson February 21, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Isiah has officially closed his own casket which has an automatic lock that can only be opened from the outside.

What a loser.

26 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I’d bet that Zach screwed up our deal when he threw the water on Nate.

27 Bronxboy in Md February 21, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Co-sign on #76……was thinkin’ the exact same thing.

28 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 3:22 pm

I guess they didn’t want to screw things up for the next GM. (fingers crossed)

29 DaVonn Obama Jefferson February 21, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Cavs Get Wallace, Smith, West And Wally
February 21, 2008 – 3:35 pm
ESPN News –
The Cavaliers have acquired Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak in a three-team trade.

The Bulls receive Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden, while Seattle gets Chris Duhon, Ira Newble and Cedric Simmons.

The deal is awaiting league approval. [READ]

30 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 3:43 pm

That’s better then Zach? The bulls take Larry Hughes’s contract?

It’s official: we cannot make deals. Zach makes more sense than Larry Hughes.

31 Charles Follymacher February 21, 2008 at 3:45 pm

i can guarantee that any GM that hasn’t seen worse in a team practice isn’t worth his signing authority. people know what they’re getting in zach. don’t be fooled by all the smoke. it was generated by zeke in an effort to give the impression he still has some pull. it was all posturing. there was no deal on the table for anybody. dolan’s dumping him at season’s end.

32 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 3:55 pm

We are stuck with these losers for another full year. We won’t be able to make any trades or signings until Feb 2009. We are on the hook for $90 mil next season. artest will not opt out for another $6 mil.

Ugh.

33 D L T Knicks February 21, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Let me get this straight:

We get BEAT-DOWN by lowly Philly by 40 points,Philly who spanked our a$$ twice before.

And we don’t feel the need to make a trade?

34 PaulNoize February 21, 2008 at 4:02 pm

#80 – yes Harlem, that deal was better than Zach. Hughes is expiring next season, Zach has beaucoup money.

Something that is not often recognized is the concept of negative value. Zach has negative value – in other words, if you could legally trade one penny for Zach, most (if not all) the teams in the league wouldn’t take Zach. They’d rather keep the penny, because the penny does not cripple their future cap flexibility.

Very few players on the Knicks roster have a trade value above or equal to zero. Lee does. Nate and Balkman might. Chandler and Crawford are right on the edge – probably most seem them as being not worth it, but a few GM’s might see their roster suiting one or the other.

Jerome, Eddy, Malik, Zach, Jeffries, Q, & Marbury all have negative value, we would have to pay people in the form of young, cheap, productive players or picks or both in order to get people to take them off our hands.

I know it sounds ludicrous to suggest that Zach has negative value, when he is clearly a baller with skills. But everything is viewed via the salary cap prism, and that $84 million contract turns a baller with an attitude into a pair of cement sneakers. Zach ain’t going nowhere, except possibly for a bigger problem like Kenyon Martin, Ben Wallace, etc.

35 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Hughes has 2 more years after this year. Zach has 3.
Zach is a better fit for their team. Chicago now will spend around $20 mil for their starting backcourt (Henrich/Hughes).
They still have no post player.

36 Steady February 21, 2008 at 4:10 pm

That’s why you’re the Force MDs–Love is a House, Love is a Home. That fateful cup caused Monty to put that King of Spade in his pocket. Now Defenders, please stand up, twirl those salty nuts, and Be A Real Fan. We never lose, time runs out. I guess I was Just Blogin’ because I was wrong (Lives) ;-)

37 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 4:10 pm

@79…… wow big trade.

The Bulls don’t have a C now ? Who mans the middle ? They going promote Thomas to starting C ? The Cavs made out on this trade but I think both Seattle and Chi town got taken. How many of the contracts absorbed by the Bulls and Sonics are expiring ?

Is this like Wally’s 8th team ?

38 Bronxboy in Md February 21, 2008 at 4:11 pm

@ DLT…

Make no mistake about it…the need is definitely felt to make a trade…

There just aren’t any takers interested in our “pieces”….

39 D L T Knicks February 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

For once I agree with Zeke and Dolan………………what?

Yea,DON’T TRADE ANYONE,PUNISH THEM,FORCE THEM TO PLAY TOGETHER.

THE FANS ARE UNHAPPY,SO MAKE THE PLAYERS UNHAPPY TOO!

DON’T GIVE THEM A WAY OUT WITH A TRADE.

PUNISH EM’.

I have offically lost it…..no trades….you gotta be joking.

40 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 4:22 pm

DLT,

yeah it is a joke (unfortunately the joke’s on us the fans and the team effort is the punchline)

41 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Noize,

Great point, but you can’t include Malik in the negative value argument. He is still a quality guy to put around young players and his contract is expiring next year.

42 HarleminMD February 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Paul,

Larry Hughes is also overvalued and he was traded today.

We are usually the recipients of overvalued contracts.

43 D L T Knicks February 21, 2008 at 4:30 pm

@Bronxboy & John Q

So what do we have to look forward to the next 2 months?

More losing with this group?

Poor defense?

Poor effort?

More turnovers than sold in a bakery?

“hey Eddy and Zach are throwing a party in THE PAINT,all are welcome”.

44 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

DLT,

We have 3 things to look forward to but they both will occur after the season.

1. high draft pick

2. Artest coming home through a sign and trade

3. Thomas on the unemployment line

45 D L T Knicks February 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

@John Q

So how can we not watch this team(I’m sorry, group of people)for the rest of the season?

46 D L T Knicks February 21, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Also John Q

1.We may not get a top five pick(see Boston 2007 draft)

2.Artest may not want to be part of this drama of team titanic(I meant group of people)

3.What if Thomas is still here,with Curry,Marbury,James,Collins,Zach,Rose,Q…..?

47 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 4:49 pm

DLT,

If you can answer that question for me I’m all ears. I have attempted to quit on the season 5x already. To quote one of my favorite movies ” Everytime I think I’m out, they pull me back in ! “

48 JohnQ February 21, 2008 at 5:00 pm

@96………..

1. have faith, most of the time the ping pong balls get it right.

2. I choose to believe that he’ll be on board

3. Put a hit out on Dolan ?

49 D L T Knicks February 21, 2008 at 5:08 pm

@John Q

Hope I can fit all 3 on the back of my “I love the Knicks” Tee-shirt.
