Disrespectful words
February 18, 2008 – 1:08 pmSome people have understandably objected to the use of certain offensive words other people have been using on this public forum. It was never my intent for free speech to be abused in this way.
To show respect towards all bloggers, there must be a banned words list, there is no way around it. There is no age cutoff for this website, no parental guidance on this website.
As of right now, there are only two words on the banned list, and they are variances of the same word.
This is a serious matter. I want all the people who have been offended by reading any objectionable words on this website to email me these exact words [ knicksdefense at gmail.com ] so that we can take care of this problem once and for all. This is your opportunity so speak up now, or forever hold your peace.
I will somehow communicate with you the final list of banished words so that people know which words are off limits. Once the list is in play, all posts containing these words will automatically be deleted. Furthermore, if the blog software accidentally screens you somehow although you are not using any offensive words, those posts will also be deleted, and not recovered. The best thing to prevent this from happening is to never use the banned words to begin with. That’s just the way it goes with software, as many of you have complained previously when this software was implemented before.
Trying to circumvent this rule by coming up with alternate derogatory words in other languages is just as offensive, so please don’t try it, it is still disrespectful.

I hope you read my disclaimer and my explanation of why such words exist.
I don’t condone them.
I am a free speech guy but understand that the excessive use of such words could in the long term hurt this great forum more than it could ever help it.
Perhaps some of us throw those words around b/c there is a spirit of fraternity here and people, including myself, might feel that one can let their gaurd down and let offensive words slide.
I respect your call thought.

You know something, I can read between the lines, don’t say “good luck” like you mean it, when you obviously don’t wish it.
I removed just one word, in essence, from the entire english lexicon because people came to me offended and hurt and I thought basketball talk could be fully expressed without the use of said word.
But if you want to turn this into Alan “wacky” Hahn round II, let me expedite matters. Give me a link to your new blog, and I’ll post it here so the posse can find you and start this cyclical pattern all over again.
So do call me a sellout, or a racist, or a censor, you’re just talking smack. This site has always been about taking polls, freedom of speech, and listening to each others opinions about the Knicks. The Knicks, let me reiterate that: The Knicks. This website is about the Knicks. It is not about Paul Mooney, or Naz’ new album, although those things have been discussed here at length by fellow bloggers.
Remember the Knicks, remember when people actually wrote here on the knicks? Me too.

KnicksDefense is a great site and whatever you have to do to keep the focus on the game, the team and the sport we love — then do it. I for one wish that anyone who needs to ever resort to hurtful ignorant slang like that, should just keep it to themselves.
Lookin forward to the game tomorrow against the Wizards!

KD,
I’ll bite. It seems the season has ended early.
First of all, forgive me for questioning your between-the-line literacy, but you clearly didn’t understand what I meant by “good luck.” The wish for good luck was genuine because I enjoyed this forum, but it was also a warning that you have set a standard that I believe requires “good luck” because it is untenable and will lead to the decline of this cutting edge site. I don’t wish you bad luck and I don’t need too. You have, to date, done a marvelous job of allowing this site to develop and grow organically, controlling it through your posts and efffort to keep up the site. You have now taken on a task which is impossible — to judge which “disrespectful” words should be banned without a tenable standard. One or two words commonly accepted as socially unacceptable for better or worse is easy. But, then you suggest that indivduals should not circumvent efforts to end “disrespect” by creating new words or phrases. You wrote “Trying to circumvent this rule by coming up with alternate derogatory words in other languages is just as offensive, so please don’t try it, it is still disrespectful.”
So you claim that you are only banning one word, but you decided to overreach by offering to define what are disrespectful words and what are not. This site, like each and every other fan site where there is a difference of opinion pumped with male testosterone, is built on a foundation of disrespectful language, responses, insinutations and putdowns. On any given page, disrespect of Knick players, trolls and Knick Defense posters is par for the course — any effort to legislate that requires good luck and more.
But this is where you get me and I take it as personally as you directed it. I take it disrespectfully as you clearly meant it. Your suggestion for my new website and reference to Alan Hahn is clearly an invitation to leave. You have read me enough to know that I will not even write a response to that invitation.
What I will respond to is that if I wanted to call you anything (sellout, racist, or censor) I would tell you and not care whether you considered it smack or not. It would be my opinion regardless of what you say. Quite frankly, my initial reaction was to find a way to help the blog work around this problem and decision, perhaps by showing how impossible a task you have set for yourself. As you know I have tried to post a couple of posts regarding the issue; one offering a collection of words, some facetious, that deserve consideration for banning. I also attempted to post what I believe was a legitimate question about your decision. I have an opinion and think highly enough of myself to actually believe I have a right to express it no matter who it pisses off. And I believ that the best way to work through issues is to discuss them and not be scared and bullied by those who differ.
Until your above response I did not believe it was your duty alone to monitor and regulate the behavior on the blog. My experience from several other blogs is that it cannot be done except by the tone set by the community.
But, you have made it clear that this is your blog, your rules and you will take control of the content of this blog. Again I say good luck and I mean it, because people like African, Statesman, O&B, Steady, Modi et al deserve a place to express their fanaticism. From my reading of all the blogs, Knick Defense remains as good a place as any.
But you and I are very similar. We don’t take slights lightly when we consider them important. I remember when you were the first to step away from Isola’s spot because you did not care for the tone of his blog. I was sad to see you go, but I respected your opinion and was very glad to meet up with you again. But you had the right idea — either you stay and express your opinion despite the condition of the blog or you just get up and leave.
So instead of responding to your throwing down of the guantlet and literal challenge to me, I will let my actions speak loudest. According to most of the posters the season is over anyway. Good luck. Thank you. Peace.

Starbury, With great respect, you don’t need to fix it if it ain’t broke.Yours is a private site and you are certainly entitled to edit it any way you choose to.But there are a lot of words that offend people, even more important than the word is the venom behind them. When I visit this arena I don’t feel the viciousness that destroyed Knick Knation.Since this is a private venue there is always the option of tossing someone who is disrespectful in your house out the door.People who come into your home should respect it as a private forum that is open to all Knick fans with good intentions. How those intentions should be judged is twofold. One, if a community is offended they need to say so, then ignore that individual.Shunning trolls does work.Secondly, as owner/operator you can toss anyone you care to out the door when you find them offensive.Banning this word or that word is your choice, but opens the proverbial can of worms.Common sense, good manners and a good kick in the ass out of the door should solve any problems. This is a Knick venue, not a court room in the Hague. If someone can’t behave there is the time-out room(shunning) or the door.Your house, your rules. In closing, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said, in a case dealing with pornography, “I know it when I see it.”The same rule is easily transferable to pornography of the mind.As to our Knick situation, I refuse to throw in the towel.Where we end up is not the ultimate question.Only one team is left standing at the season’s end.Who are the stand up guys you can depend on?It’s over when you give up, not when the score board says so.LGK

Lives,
I’ve been monitoring between posts #4 and #10 with great interest/curiosity. Unless you’re obligated by the community/youths, fatherly functions, or you’re on the southbound Acela heading to wittness the “turnin’ the corner”, roll call will be at seven or whenever you damn please. Oh, yeah–another pre-game would be nice. KD Jakes Cooleyhigh is just coming back from the homegoing of the young fella gone too soon. He too shall come around when he damn pleases to nourish the hearts and minds with a spiritual piece. The season may have been declared “OVAH” by some, you will note that one poster gallantly had the NYK winning all the games this half. Now that’s what I call HUTZPAH/COJONES and just plain old “Being a Real Fan”.

I agree with and respect your wishes on the use of certain words/phrases. While the N word doesn’t personally offend me, I can definitely feel for those that it might.

i am sorry it has come to this.
once again, if you sincerely want a certain word removed from the site because it hurts your feelings personally to see it here, please email me this word and if i get numerous requests from bloggers about the same word it will be removed.
please don’t post these proposed words here.
right now there is only one word removed. it is not my goal in any way to add to this list, I NEVER WANTED A LIST, or to silence bloggers who for some reason only know how to type one word out of the millions available to them. The list is to prevent unnecessary harm.
if you are posting offensive words here as some kind of political statement against “the system”, whatever.

I hope Lives post @ 10 is not his farewell post.
Amongst many of the bloggers here, I considered his rantings, and writings amongst the best.
KnicksD
I don’t make attacks or direct them veiled or otherwise, I certainly hope the whole “political statement against the system rant” wasn’t a slight at yours truly.
Just keep in mind that Mr. Obama does the political spiel on the regular, and topics other than basketball come through the wind mill of this blog from time to time.
To single one person out or one bloggers rant out for scrutiny cries of a lack of objectivity.
I think you will know that my cloak for the most part tries to stick with basketball but as I have admitted the atmosphere is fraternal enough that I feel like I can initiate, react, or comment on any topic raised here by any blogger.
Heck I even remember one of your better post on the perspective of a Knick game from the back row seats that many a working class fan has to occupy. I thought that was one of your best bits.
And lets all be honest with ourselves, race, class, and all other sorts of socially related items interact with the various sports and game of life. We’d be fools to deny it.
In any case,… A fond farewell to you lives, if this is your last time here.
KnicksD peace be onto you.

Personally, I don’t see why this has to be rocket-science or nail-biting time for free speech. We are all (or pretend to be) reasonable adults here. If you’re afraid that banning n-i-g-g-e-r, kike, jungle-bunny, hook-nose, etc., etc. and all permutations of race-based insults, then perhaps this is not the space for you if you cannot express yourself without that bit of weaponry.
Sports and race is a legitimate topic of conversation, but what Pman did earlier in the name of defending KD honour should be (imho) deemed out of bounds. There’s plenty of latitude here in terms of free speech, but just as your right to freely swing a fist ends at the tip of someone else’s nose, I think as REASONABLE grown ass men we can draw a bright line between acceptable jabs and fightin “dirty.”
lay hard, play fair. Do you respect the man’s house or not? This doesn’t have to be tough.

From Mark Stein’s article regarding the Hurdles still to be faced in culminating a Mavs-Nets Trade for Jason Kidd.
‘So Dallas has secured Van Horn’s participation via sign-and-trade, according to team sources, to make up for the removal of George, who blocked his inclusion in the trade by citing a little-known league rule that prevents certain players with one-year contracts from being traded without their consent.
Agreement between the Mavericks and the Nets on Hassell and Van Horn, however, doesn’t make it automatic that the league will approve Van Horn’s role in the transaction. It’s believed that Van Horn, who’s been out of the game since the 2006 NBA Finals, will be required to leave his Colorado home, pass a physical and make himself available to play for the Nets as opposed to just collecting checks because he’s eligible contractually to be added to the transaction.
Sources close to the Dallas-New Jersey trade talks said Sunday that it’s not yet clear whether the league will seek to establish any sort of time requirement for how long Van Horn would have to stay with the Nets, with whom the 32-year-old began his career in 1997-98. But sources say Van Horn will receive an estimated $4.3 million for the rest of the season that will not be pro-rated if the trade goes through.
Litvin is one of the lawyers who will help NBA commissioner David Stern rule on this trade and touched on the case-by-case nature of these scenarios when he said Saturday, “If the guy gets there and 20 seconds later he gets cut and the guy is 55 years old, that’s not going to pass muster. If the guy played last year, reports [to his new team], and plays and practices [like McKie], that will. Somewhere inbetween is a line that I can’t define.”‘
HERE IS WHERE I THINK THE KNICKS SHOULD GET INVOLVED-ESPECIALLY SHOULD THE KEITH VAN HORN HURDLE STALLS THIS LATEST ROUND OF MAVERICK NETS TRADE TALKS FOR J-KIDD.
“The Mavs’ most significant loss might prove to be Diop, who played a big role in their ride to the ‘06 Finals as half of a two-headed center tandem alongside Erick Dampier. This is an especially risky time to lose size in the West, after the Lakers landed Gasol and Phoenix’s blockbuster move for Shaquille O’Neal.”
That portion of Stein’s article suggest that Dallas will be losing still much needed size in a Western Conference that has seen a two teams SIZE ARMS RACE in Phoenix, and LA.

DEE-FENDERS,
Very interesting conversations. This is similar to the Division that exist regarding the Obama support w/n the community.
It certaintly is not on that level, but there are parallels. You have good people on both sides that truly believe that their
position is correct. You have one side that is progressive, and the other w/ the more traditional way of doing things. There exist a
complex character (Monty/Hillary) that drives a wedge. Both sides have a common goal, just different methods of achievement.
Let’s Go Knicks!!!
Tension has and will continue to Rise when one side draws a line in the sand, and tells the other this is how things are, “Take it or leave it”.
Respect of others’ opinions TRUMPS Dictatorship in the end. I have observed Isola’s “Take it or leave it board”, and now they average 4 post a week. Adults have to be treated as Adults, or it will never work.
I can agree w/ outcome but disagree w/ the methods to obtain the outcome. FLEXING IS NOT REALLY A SPORT!!

this doesn’t have to be about demonizing pman. it’s just about setting standards. do you think them reasonable or not? whenever any rule is enforced there’s always the fear of slippery slopes. but, truly gentlemen, are we there yet? does banning race-based insults (and that’s really what we’re talking about at this stage, no?) really push us to the brink of bible-thumping censorship? i think we’re sufficiently far away from the no-fun/no expression zone that it’s almost irrational to fear it at this point.
if and when it gets to the point where you feel too handcuffed by the rules to express yourself in the way you prefer THEN hitail it out of here for the next joint. i don’t see that we’re anywhere near there at this point. relax. have a smoke, swirl the brandy, sink into your wing back chair.

According to the NJ Star Ledger’s Dave D’alessandro the Heat are in position to be players in a free agent market that could easily replenish their cupboard, coupled with a draft that will fill at least one need.
In a sense, according to D’alessandro, they are players to revamp overnight.
This is why it would be a great time to pimp Curry or even Z-Bo at them, with another player thrown in of course to help our cap situation for the Kings arrival in NY.

Peaceman, I am sorry if I offended you by my actions on the website. I’ve always considered you a friend, but if you don’t accept my apology, I understand. You are an O.G. blogger and I’ve never messed with your words before, but I had to do something this time. I simply don’t use the N word in any variation.
Lives, I am sorry I snapped at you, my anger stemmed not from you, but from another on here. You are one of the truly great bloggers among us, far better than myself, and I admit that to everyone here and now. Turns out there was someone else that had pissed me off yesterday and I let it out after reading your remark of disappointment with the stance I took on banishing offensive words.
STATESMAN, nice try throwing “dictatorship” around just now. I think African also unsuccessfully tried used that word once before here too. It makes no sense to me, because if there were any real “dictatorship” the last thing you’d be able to do is complain about it on here. For example, how many of your own words have ever been censored on this blog, STATESMAN?
Dictatorship, as if I’m somehow collecting taxes from you. If i took a poll on this topic like I do on almost every other issue (usually knick related, mind you), would the people who were offended by the N-word no longer be hurt by its continued use? the removal of one word so as not to offend others merits this perceived “dictatorship” from you?
If a person is offended they’re offended. More than one person came to me with complaints so I decided to try to solve the problem.
I was personally offended when you, STATESMAN, said a while ago that your goal is to shut down knicksdefense.com permanently, but what do you know, we’re still around, and your insinuations continue to be published despite this dictatorship. i’d say that is pretty close to freedom of speech.
By the way, “dictatorship” is not even close to consistent with your statement from just yesterday STATESMAN,
“Knickd, was it one of your Corporate sponsors that requested you BLOCK the N-word? Good Call.”
So, how much help do you think I get from corporate sponsors, STATESMAN? $100k $10k? $1000? $100? $5? $1? .50? a penny?
Really? That’s interesting.
I look forward to talking about knicks basketball tomorrow against the wizards. thank you to the people who voiced their support with regard to this sensitive matter. in any case, i doubt there are very many knicks blogs out there that permit the use of this word after-all.

If you can make the time–NEW POST PLEEEEEEEAZE. Hopefully we can move off this thread. Like I’ve always said, losing makes us eat our innards.

Well it seems that Monty is doing some flopping.
After talking about the phasing out of the big man last week.
This week he is back to his song and dance about holding on to his acquisitions, Z-Bo and E-Chunky.

Also it seems like the rumors about Denver having interest in Z-Bo are merely rumors. Denver is also not as interested in acquiring Artest as has been rumored.

Knicksd,
It was getting close to your bedtime in NYC, and maybe you were having dreams/nightmares, but I do not recall EVER WRITING
that MY GOAL was to shut-down your BLOG or any BLOG for that matter. I know the extent of my limited power. I have on more
then one occasion disagreed w/ your position or positions and I have taken a few shots at you, just as you have thrown a few at me.
I have also given my thoughts on HOW & WHY I believed that this blog was able to obtain success in such a short time period.
However, at no point do I recall ever writing that MY goal was to shut-down your blog. This is another occasion of
you “Reading between the Line”, to use your words. Reading what the writer writes is how MOST people reach Rational Conclusions.
Regarding Dictatorship: Knicksd, if you READ what I wrote regarding the banned word, you would see that early on I wrote that it
was inappropriate, even when YOU stated that you did not have a problem w/ the word. The reference to dictatorship had more
to do w/ your SUDDEN change of Mind, and your READING between the line w/ ‘Lives’ and saying “Don’t say Good Luck when you
don’t mean it”, and you started referencing Hahn, and the next site. I have not agreed w/ ‘Lives’ recently on some positions,
but I do Know that he has always been very RESPECTFUL to you and your SITE. Your response to ‘Lives’ was Dismissive and Inappropriate,
w/ a tone that said “My House, My Rules, and F&ck U “, A Dictatorship.
In most dictatorships you have opposition. The dictators will Eventually eliminate opposition, but it always exist. So yes you
can ask questions or Challenge a Dictator.
Knickd, PLEASE show me where my goal was to shut down your site.
Peace & Blessings

pman @ #46: the only true, unfettered freedom any human has is right between his ears. you are free, at least until the mind-reading equipment comes online in another couple centuries, to think/dream/imagine whatever you want. however anything outside that, anything that has any physical dimension whatsoever has bounds. THAT is real life, pman. in real life there are limitations to every single thing you might want to do. that’s the world in which i live.
even on “survivor” island in TVland, where drrty tricks are the law of the day, there are still limits, there are still consequences.
every community on the planet makes up their own rules as far as what’s fair game. that’s as natural as breathin. KD’s tryina balance free expression within limits. let’s not freak out. this isn’t (or shouldn’t be) a big deal.
Steady @ #48: hey, i’ve said it before that i don’t really care what kinda handle you use. use what’s comfortable for you. honestly, i’m not that thin-skinned, i have no preference (but just don’t call me nword or msm
).
Lives, I hope you do come back. Everybody’s allowed to get a lil huffy and defensive from time to time. You’re certainly not immune to that, you’ve caught that indignance bug on more than one occasion. It’s very forgivable/overlookable stuff when the blood temperature cools back to normal. Your insight and guidance has been highly valued and it’s a key reason why this spot is so special. But I’ll certainly understand if you want/need to take some time off. We’ve been repeating ourselves. There is an amazing diversity of opinion and lots of keen ideas tackling different subjects from all sorts of angles and tangents, but at this point I think it safe to say we’ve about covered the knicks every whichaway. There’s no there, there.
At least until zeke/management sees its way clear to doing something truly different, I can’t see how we’re going to get to a more productive pattern. Yes, they’ve improved over first third of the season, but it’s still obviously not enough to save the season (lawdy, pman, jay bee don’t slay me). I’ll wager most of us are dead fans shufflin to the finish line. Nothing’s gonna happen tradewise. Nothin. This is it. Don’t blame ya lives for shuttin it down. We’ve all been handcuffed by the zekester this season. Not our fault he’s been ignoring common sense. Wottayagonnado.
30-odd games left? i can live on the bread an water for a while. this too shall pass. won’t it?

Without free speech no search for truth is possible… no discovery of truth is useful… Better a thousandfold abuse of free speech than denial of free speech. The abuse dies in a day, but the denial slays the life of the people, and entombs the hope of the race.”
Charles BRADLAUGH
British social reformer (1833-1891)
Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power. Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason…
There can be on right of speech where any man…[is] compelled to suppress his honest sentiments.
Equally clear is the right to hear. To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker.”

By Peaceman on Feb 19, 2008 at 11:20 am
pman, do you really realize what you’re fighting for? you’re actually fighting for the right to sling racial slurs (cuz that’s the only limitation imposed at this blog so far). i can’t pretend to be the douglass scholar you are, but i’m pretty sure that’s not what he was going for.
i guess you’re the guy who feels labelling certain acts as hate crimes should be eliminated cuz it infringes on personal freedoms. ok. our philosophies are very different on this. germany’s learned the lesson and has the toughest restrictions around on that form of expression. you live in america where there’s a lot more lattitude. i say be joyful over what you have; there is no reason to fret and frown b/c you can’t scream out racial slurs on someone else’s blog when you want to. this does not signal the end of rome, man.
let’s get back to our favourite pastime, namely Curry-bashing. it’s all good.
i do believe we need a new game-day thread knicksdee. it’s time, it’s time.

I watched a couple of college basketball games this weekend. I don’t see any talent worth getting excited about.
IT is right: the draft is a crapshoot. Preparing for the draft through extensive losing is worthless.
We need a great trade in the next 2 days.
By HarleminMD on Feb 19, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Nah, we’re stuck with our guys. We just gotta do things the old fashioned way…..coach ‘em up! We bust a lot on Aguirre for his work with Curry, but i am personally pretty excited to see what Aquirre can do working with ZBo. Zach is just the right kind of student, has a bad attitude, thinks he is better than he is, and is almost always athletically overmatched every night. Aguirre can coach that…..hell he WAS that for most of his career!
i’d just like to see if we can figure how to have fun and play with pride down the stretch. Actually, i’m so desperate at this point i will take either one! C’mon guys….have fun. Or - play with some pride, some passion, with a sense of purpose. The purpose being communicating to the league that NY ain’t gonna be doormats for much longer. Seven years of doormat is enough!
Oh - and the asking for a new thread thing gets tired after the first post. If someone beat you to the punch, let ‘em have it….don’t Drossman up the blog. Just sayin’.
