Saturday Night All-Star Festivities

by knicksdefense on February 17, 2008

Overall I’d say it was an entertaining evening throughout, the skills contest, three point shootout and the dunk contest.

Watching Chris Paul move through that obstacle course, I thought he’d definitely win because the guy is so quick and precise with his maneuvers, but it ended up being being Deron Williams who took home the trophy with the the best skills. Good for Deron.

I couldn’t believe that the Spurs won that team shootout game because they had Tim Duncan and David Robinson anchoring their team. Those guys always could score. And Becky Hammon impressed me with her range as well.

I was a bit disappointed in the three point shootout because I thought Kobe Bryant was going to be competing, yet they still had some great shooters going at it: Dirk, Peja, Kopono, Daniel “Boobie” Gibson, Rip Hamilton and Steve Nash. Turns out Kopono hasn’t been playing much at all this season, but he still shot the ball lights out the best of the night and congrats to him for beating out all the other great shooters. Lord knows he’s been a knicks killer in the past with that jumper.

In terms of creativity and athleticism, the dunk contest was great. Lots of new and innovating things were tried, especially the behind-the-backboard dunks. But I’m getting pretty sick of the judges fudging up the scores. I knew without a doubt that Dwight was going to win before anybody even tried a dunk because he got robbed last year and the judges probably felt guilty about giving the sticker on the backboard dunk a 45 or whatever BS number they gave it last year.

The judges absolutely do not know what is going on, and only got maybe 30% of the dunks right in terms of scoring. Even Magic Johnson said it best, “three of us never dunked it before,” although he was joking, I do think that certain people got robbed with low scores.

Birthday cake. That was the second best dunk of the night. Highly impressive. That should have been a 50, no doubt about it, because it was new, innovative, athletic. They gave it a 46.

Don’t get me wrong, Dwight deserved the title, but I doubt one of his 50′s was even a real dunk, but a throw down from above the rim.

Anybody have any predictions for today’s all-star MVP? I’m going to guess that Kobe wins it, because I think the west will get the W with Kevin Garnett out with injured abdominals. If the east wins, probably Dwight or LeBron will get the trophy.

got a few recent requests that the N word be removed from the site, and since I think we can express ourselves here without using it, I will agree to remove it and hope that it does not open pandora’s box towards creating a banned list of forbidden words.

I am sorry to those who have been offended seeing the word used here, I would never use it myself and have not used it.

best regards,

Hey KnicksD did the N.B.A. store include a filter that blocks stuff critical of the League Emperor?

REPOST REPOST REPOST- a response to Peaceman’s take on the trade DLT suggested and that I am trumpteing.

Well peacman

Think of acquiring Kleisa as bridge to land Artest!

Note how the Denver Post article explains that the Kings were incquiring into obtaining Kliesa.

Should the Knicks obtain him, he could be a bargaining chip in a follow-up trade in the summer to land Artet.

What’s your take.

O&B
if we could do it NOW…I’d say yes!
If not, next year we will suffer a blow up of this team which I am
not in favor of! I think LEE, Nate, Balk and Crawford are our Core.
We should build around them! A pass first point guard and a Shot blocker
will be just what the Doctor ordered! Imagine what Crawford would present to opponets
with a real passer running point?

Defenders,
Read a link to a hack in the daily spews who’s insinuating that Kenny Smith is the heir apparent to Monty in NY
(or at least working his on-air mojo to get the JOB. Afterall, Kenny IS a NYer. Many MSM types have said there’s a leak in
da Garden and definitely some backstabbing going on. This is corporate politrix at its best. What’s the over/under
on IT+Zeke=Monty surviving this barrage? Does KennySmith+MSM+KnicksDefense=New GM?

thanks peaceman for playing by the rules.

O&B that post went through twice before take a look.

steady, it has been well documented that only one person really controls the knicks, and that person’s name is not Isiah Thomas. Isiah himself has said so in recent weeks.

I wouldn’t be mad if Kenny Smith was hired.
He sounds like he knows what it takes to win a
championship (even though he’s won 2). He’s well
liked and I can’t think of any negatives about it
except his lack of experience. If that was an issue
with me, I wouldn’t be voting for Obama.

How do you feel about the fact that he was on those Rockets team that denied us the chip. Lest you forget? I smell you but that’s still hanging on my

What’s the Major issue you think Obama has over Clinton?
Change? You see how Zeke was beat down in a postion much less than
the US President. If he wins, what makes you think his fate will be different?
This is more of a Modi type situation!

The Jet as Coach????
Lets just finish the season first or we may as well discuss who the coach will be
in 2022!

11 Peaceman February 17, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Let me state this FACT for the younger Knicks fans!
Mark Jackson was booed out the the Garden much worse than
any player I’ve ever seen! I was at courtside a lot of those games
and I felt bad for him! So, whomever suggests him as a future coach,
your yanking your own chain! Mark Jackson called the Garden Fans
” RATS JUMPING FROM A SINKING SHIP.” They will not forget that!

And “Monty” should have sent Chandler and Morris to the D-League to get some burn and experience. This way he could have added 2 vets to the roster to push for the playoffs, which is now out of the picture, maybe.

No-D-City,I like it.

16 Steady February 17, 2008 at 8:37 pm

D L T,
Remember when you asked the question over the summer? The player in the D-League counts on your roster. The best way to stash a player–realistically and according to the rules is with the IR list or the famous Plantar Fasciatis. Twisted ankles, flu-like symptoms, etc. have also been used across the NBA. IT could not have sent the kids for burn and bring in vets to play. Euroleague serves that purpose. I’m tired of the King of Lies. I’m still holding out for an H2O redux.

Stern’s statement that the Knicks will do better “Next Year”, could be his way of saying “New Management” will be in place.

Monty may need a 26-4 run to keep his job.

The Beasley kid might be worth the Knicks resorting to their early season play,…when they were TANKING games and losing
by 20 plus points to 76ers, BobCats, etc. Heck this was before Statesman realized the the season was done.

Trade Specialist/Experts, How are you able to make trades w/o knowing the Knicks Current/Future Playing Style?
When the Knicks were a “POWER TEAM”, they needed a Pass First Guard, that could get the ball to the BIG MEN.
Lately Crawful & N8 have been playing Street Ball and Jacking it and every opportunity. If they are a
Jump-Shooting team then they need a point who can hit jump shots, but may not look to creat for others (Bibby).
Remember Monty has never FULLY COMMITTED to one style so Klienza may look good today, but his Style may not
Fit Next week.

Knickd, was it one of your Corporate sponsors that requested you BLOCK the N-word? Good Call

Fuck the All Star game!
No Reps from the Knicks, even though Crawford has a 20.3 points per game average and
more wins than Wade and has played more games????
Notice how the NBA uses Nate’s 1rst Slam Dunk of last year’s contest as part
of the NBA’S “Where the imposible happens” commercial?

No Reps from GSW who IMO got screwed the worse…Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson
both deserve to be out there!

It’s the Knicks against the World in the East and the GSW against the World in
the West! May both teams kick some All Star ass the next 30 games!

I have a renewed energy to defend Coach Thomas in light of Dave Stern’s remarks!
Yes he has made mistakes ….but given the pressure he is under, who could think
with a clear head, let alone concentrate on the knicks???
Did Stern comment on Coach Frank? Coach Riley? Anything about Mchale and the Wolf’s joke of a team?
NOT THAT I HAVE HEARD OF! This year it appeared to me that every thing possible to distract this Knick team has
taken place! Lets start with:

1. The ABS trial preseason. I believe Thomas innocent, and what a way to stat the season?
2. The Media’s over coverage of that trial!
3. The AWOL of Marbury. I believe the call to bench Marbury was Dolan’s call, not Zeke’s!
I believe Dolan was still stewing because of the horrible job Marbury did as a wittness
for MSG! He could have been much more humble, and a predominate female jury may of made
their conculsion with his arrogent testimony imbedded in their minds!
4. The Media led “Fire Isiah” chants and Media led protests to remove Thomas are unprecedented
in any sport! Anyone who may think that this did not affect the Knicks play are void
of humanity!

The only thing the Knicks can do is come back stong these last 30 games and play like their
telling Stern to STFU!

OBTW

Here is the Curry fits Miami article, sinc the link requires sign up.

Curry could fit Riley’s plans with Heat
Sam Smith | On Pro Basketball
February 18, 2008
NEW ORLEANS
Pat Riley is too quiet.

“Yes, the news came over the weekend that he’s a finalist for the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Yes, he made that big Shaquille O’Neal trade with Phoenix, which no one thought was possible. (O’Neal’s Suns debut, by the way, looks to be Wednesday at home against Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson, the latter of whom Shaq dubbed Benedict Arnold. This is suddenly the premier game of the second half of the season, but I digress.)
But if you tell me Riley is building a team around Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion, I tell you that you don’t know Riley and you don’t know NBA history. Pat “Small Ball” Riley? I don’t think so.

Despite what they say in Miami, the consensus is the Heat will let Marion’s deal expire after next season and head for a big man like Elton Brand, a free agent after next season whom Riley tried to sign as a free agent in 2003.

Here is Riley’s history: He made his reputation coaching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Los Angeles. He sat out a year and then went to the Knicks to coach Patrick Ewing. He didn’t even get his first Miami suntan before he traded for Alonzo Mourning. Then he swooped in and traded Lamar Odom, among others, for O’Neal.

Riley needs a big post-up presence. He doesn’t really see the game otherwise, and the truth is, rarely has a team succeeded without one. The Suns’ trade for O’Neal shows they believe it too.

So what about Eddy Curry?

It seems his time in New York is coming to an end. Knicks coach and President Isiah Thomas talked last week about the phasing out of big men in the NBA. And while Thomas pursued Curry and Zach Randolph, Thomas has always seen the game through a guard’s eyes.

For the first time in a long time, the Knicks could be ready to subtract payroll. With Stephon Marbury entering the last season of his contract, the Knicks actually would be under the salary cap—my computer threatened to self-destruct if I ever wrote that before now—after next season with Curry off their ledger. The expiring contracts of Jason Williams and Ricky Davis could help make that happen.

If Thomas keeps his job, rebuilding the Knicks into a quicker team under the cap would be one of the most attractive situations in the NBA. That would likely mean getting rid of Curry and the team-killing Randolph, who said predictably last week: “What we’re doing now ain’t working. We need to do something.”

Meanwhile, what other coach would believe he could motivate and put Curry in position to succeed better than Riley? How much could it possibly cost? Curry is only 25.

Riley isn’t patient enough to wait two years for his team to develop, and he needs a big center. Curry could be that player.”

STERN: KNICKS WILL BE BETTER IN ’09

By MARC BERMAN

February 18, 2008
NEW ORLEANS

‘During his press conference, commissioner David Stern – who may have some knowledge that the Knicks could be making some management changes, possibly with Isiah Thomas – said he’s expecting better things from the team next season.

“I’m optimistic, at least for next season,” Stern said.

Owner James Dolan and senior VP Glen Grunwald represented the Knicks this weekend.

Grunwald is gearing up for the Feb. 26 trade deadline. The Knicks have entertained offers on everyone, from Zach Randolph to Eddy Curry to Fred Jones.’

Let me hope that the overtures to the Knicks being better in 09 includes a little power-ball good fortune should the Knicks end up in lotteryville.

That aside it’s Isiah’s call on wheather the season is over and what course of action he or Grunwald along with Dolan will take to do either of the following: a) play the youth after the trade deadline, for their development, and to protect trade block pieces such as Z-Bo, Curry etc; b) Trade before the deadline to obtain expiring contracts, and possible 2nd round pick if not mid to late 1st rounders for our trade block chips; c) trade for players who can improve the team right now and actually help this Knicks team make a run at the playoffs in the woeful Leastern Conference.

Actually I think trading at this juncture will throw the teams already woeful chemistry problems even further astray.

To that end those who would like to give good cause to losing games might want to acquire expiring contracts to play out the remainder of the season. That when coupled with the pups who ought to be playing down the stretch of this season, should the playoffs slip further from the Knicks sight, might make for a good combination to insure a high draft pick.

Still I will repeat myself asking players to lose on purpose is wrong.

But

Setting up the cards so that it will be harder to realistically win, think playing the youngins, and any expiring contracts if obtained via trade, yet asking your team to play hard and compete is preferable.

27 Orange and Blue February 18, 2008 at 10:11 am

DV OJ

What do you think of my proposal for insuring a ping pong ball yet saving face at post # 23?

I am sincerely against asking players to tank, I agree with others here who believe that such behavoir blurs lines that ought not be blurred.

But I do concede that the Knicks could take the trade deadline as an opportunity to trade away servicable big contracts for expiring contracts, with the result being a mixture of playing the pups who we at least ought to see develop, and playing the incoming expiring players to see who will be around, with the end result that the Knicks Organization most likely secure its fair share of lottery balls.

Does this make sense???????

28 Orange and Blue February 18, 2008 at 10:27 am

Here’s the suggested Knicks Heat trade.

They get curry, and Jefferies (hey Riley gets his big man)!

We get the expiring contracts of combustible Rickey Davis, and Jason Williams.

We might try to request a 1st or 2nd rounder- probrably only get a 2nd rounder or two, which is ok by me.

What worse short but sweet expiring chemistry fiasco could the Knicks ask for?

29 Orange and Blue February 18, 2008 at 10:29 am

OBTW again…

Seems like the J-Kidd to Dallas deal will happen after all.

Everyone can thank the good Mormon Keith Van Horn!

30 DaVonn Obama Jefferson February 18, 2008 at 10:47 am

I see what your saying O&B but I’m not against tanking games.
Now would I like to see the Knicks in the playoffs….of course.
But if we don’t start winning soon it shouldn’t even be a question.
If Stern can come out and say what he said….then he knows something
and I wouldn’t doubt we would get the #1 pick. Just because we don’t
have the worse record doesn’t meaen we won’t get that top pick.
Has it happened recently. I don’t think Portland had the worse record
in the league last year.
If we can get that #1 pick…then we’ll be talking.
As for the Curry trade…I would make that trade in a heartbeat.
That means we’ll be under the cap sooner than originally thought.
Currently even after Marbs and Rose come off the books we’ll still be over.
If we can ship fat boy down south for some expiring contracts and a future first
rounder. It’s obvious Miami isn’t giving up their pick this year.
Then again…you never know with Pat.
If there’s a coach anywhere on this earth that can get fat boy to play defense….his
name is Pat Riley.
I doubt it though.

If Sterns comments means a lil old style luck for the Orange and Blue in the lottery in exchange for the Honorable Discharge of NY’s lil general,… I’d have mix feelings about the afair but in the end would welcome acquiring a high draft pick with star upside.

I still think there are ways to obtain smaller contracts and dump some of servicable big contracts on the Knicks roster.

But whether that will happen remains to be seen.

I’m thinking if no trades occur, then Monty might go into go for broke mode and still coach the team as if it were on a last ditch playoff charge. I could be wrong, and Monty might just start playing the kids to see whether they have something and whether their keepers.

Who Knows at this juncture.

Hey Peaceman:

Here are words you can still use…

Hate to say it but Anglo’s were mild by comparisons, they weren’t mass rapist, and the Northern Anglos were at least industrious and not piggy backing off of Black and Indian slave labor for their capital accumulation.

DEE-FENDERS,

Jibber-Jabbering,

Curry playing for Riley, would be a Nightmare for Eddy. Riley’s demand for superior conditioning, combined w/
Long and Intense practices would break Eddy. I hope for the poor kid’s sake that this trade is not done.
Why would the Knicks want to trade Curry if Zach is the problem? Could it be that Monty realizes that a 1-Tool
player is a Liability and not and Asset.

Trading for a 35 year old pt., while giving up your 24 year old pt. is DUMB. Cuban will regret this move in a year and half.
Never trade young for old. In addition Diop is a DEFENSIVE STEAL. He is just what the Knicks need.

The Beasley kid is a BEAST!!! He is a 3/4 at the next level w/ big upside. The point-guard Rose is a KEEPER.
Falling short of the 8th-seed and getting the 8th or 9th pick in the draft is purely short-term.
LOOK LONG-TERM and at the BIG-PICTURE.

That’s why I’m besides myself asking why the Knicks didn’t get involved, in the deal between the Mavs and Nets, just so they could obtain Diop.

Hey if Riley Kills Curry for being unmotivated, well maybe that’s his just deserts. Pun intended!

43 African February 18, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Isiah would be a fool to trade Curry to Miami.
That would come back to haunt him if he’s still here.

44 Statesman February 18, 2008 at 2:02 pm

African,

It depends if Curry is motivated, and realizes that he may join his draft-classmate Kwame Brown on his way out of the league.
Curry will always be able to score but at some point he has to realize his game has to expand. He has the talent but w/
Curry it always comes down to how hard is he willing to work. When Dream & Sampson played together, Dream rebounded,& played D.
When Robinson & Duncan played together Robinson sacrificed his offensed, but rebounded and played D. Blaming Randolph for
Curry’s poor play is incorrect. Blaming Curry’s poor conditioning and inability to adjust to the REFS, for Curry play is
correct. Eddy’s cost himself another season, and more importantly he’s cost the Knicks and the fans big-time. Isiah biggest
mistake was CUDDLING Curry.

Peace & Blessings
