All-star break is here, real Knicks are MIA
February 16, 2008 – 4:21 pmSo the Knicks should not “tank” games from here on. Do they have that choice? What have they been doing this season, if not losing consistently?
With all due respect to the die hards, let’s put aside questioning our loyalty to the Knicks. We should not feel the need to do that here. I have no doubt 99% of the people who contribute to Knicksdefense already are real Knicks fans. That we are Knicks fans is a given to me, because we wouldn’t still be following the team otherwise. We’d be following the Celtics or the Suns if some of us were turncoats.
For what logical reason should I believe the Knicks have the competitive spirit to turn it around with Isiah Thomas still at the helm this season? What example have they set for losing 71% of their games this year? What is the punishment if the players don’t give 110%? Tell me, which Knick is playing inspiring basketball right now, or saying the right things during interviews? Last I checked, most of these Knicks are talking about getting traded to other teams, which makes them not real Knicks at all, in my opinion. Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph, Jamal Crawford, Stephon Marbury, no balls between the lot of them.
This current group of Knicks has shown more than once the ability to reel off losing streaks of seven or eight games without hesitation. Yet what is their max winning streak this season? Three games? Honestly, lets look at it like that: how many in a row have they won this entire season? How many have they won in their last ten? Only one!
What reason should I believe they are going to turn it around now, after losing the entire season? All fans hope for their team to do well, but what logical reason allows me to think the knicks will improve? I don’t think the players care all that much, from all I can see. I know for a fact Isiah Thomas doesn’t care about the Knicks, if he did he would quit so the Knicks could try another avenue instead of the one they’ve been on for the past four years.
Not a single knick is involved in the all-star festivities this season. This guy Daniel Gibson hit 11 three-pointers last night in the rookie-sophomore game. The Knicks very easily could have had him or any of the others from 2006 that I mentioned in the last post. Instead, the Knicks have currently the worst three point specialist in the NBA, Quentin Richardson. Neither Balkman, nor Collins, nor Chandler, nor Morris were in that rookie-sophomore game. And even if for some odd reason they had been, probably none of them would be capable of hitting more than one three pointer in that game. So have Isiah’s face-saving draft talents been eroding since drafting Nate Robinson and David Lee? I’d say yes at this point. Balk can’t shoot a lick, neither can Mardy. Mardy lost his athleticism after knee surgery. Wilson Chandler never plays and neither does Randolph Morris. These are facts, don’t blame me for saying it aloud.
If Isiah’s plan for the rest of the season is to have Crawful do isolation plays and freelance scoring, and then call that team basketball, let me first throw up, and then just say Isiah Thomas is just wrong. He needs to get out of New York as soon as possible. Frank Layden was doing a better job than Isiah Thomas statistically.
Ron Artest is not a New York Knick. I see no reason to assume he is a New York Knick, again, because that is not logical. Nor will be a New York Knick this season, because it is unlikely. Damaged goods Quentin Richardson IS a New York Knick (brought in by Isiah Thomas, just like every other player on the team), and a starting New York Knick at that. Ron Artest may mean well, but would he have done the things he did in Indiana, or said the things he is currently saying to the press in Sacramento, if Ron Artest were a real team-first player? Would he have wanted to quit the NBA to focus on his rap career if he were a real team player? And if he is not a prototype team-first player, would he be a good fit for this current group of lazy I’s?
It is a disgrace because right now Knicks fans should be talking about their all-star representatives. Instead, you go to knicks.com and they’re promoting “go bowling with the Knicks on march 13th,” and the Harlem Globetrotters recently visiting the garden. Unacceptable.

*note: Scott Layden was finally fired in 2003-2004 with a record of 10-18. The Knicks are currently 15-37 at the all-star break under Isiah Thomas, and there are no indications by Knicks owner James Dolan that any changes will be made.

starburyfan, I don’t believe in tanking, but do believe in playing young guys for player development. I know for a fact that we saw Mardy progressing toward the end of last season, why not try to get some of that back?
I disagree about the Balkman pick. It was a good pick. All you can ask for a GM to do is make a solid pick at #20. He did that. The year before Kiki picked Julius Hodge at #20 and Jerry West picked Dahntay Jones at #20 in 2003. (These two are often cited is replacements for Isiah) …I also don’t accept the argument that isiah should assume that Balkman would still be there at #29. Isiah does not have a crystal ball on the next 9 picks. In fact, the Suns traded the very next pick which leaves suspicions that they might have tabbed Balkman who would be a perfect fit in their run-and-gun system. Now if Mardy doesn’t work out at #29, it is quite forgivable as usually only 1 guy (two tops) tabbed in the 25-30 range is a true keeper. We can’t get D-Lee every year. Having stated that, I haven’t given up on Mardy or even Wilson Chandler. It is too early.
Anyway the Balkman pick comes out even better when considering the previous 11 guys picked BEFORE him.

One final note: GM’s aren’t to be juged on record but future potential. Layden left the Knicks with solid enough vets to win more games, but have no future. Layden did the worst possible job. It is not even close. Isiah got the team younger and more talented, but his fuck ups this year have stopped everything.
For example, take the Indiana Pacers right now. They are currently much better than the Knicks, but they have no future with that team. Indiana can win more games now because of decent vets who have hit their ceiling, but if they can’t flip Jermaine into something special they will be mired in mediocrity for the next 8 years. Granger is there only young tradeable asset. And like the Knicks of the Layden era theose vets are bad enough to never have a championship shot, but good enough not to land a lottery pick. This is the worst position to be in. I would much rather have the Knicks roster. What truly kills me about this year is not just the lack of wins, but the lack of young player development.

Not to happy to lose Z-bo’s points, but we would be bringing in a great shooter,Kleiza,a hustle/defensive Najera,Smith can help with the PG(if he and N8 are not fighting again)and Hunter a rebounder/defender.
We have to do something!!!!!

Starburyfan,
Dou you ask a rhetorical question about tanking games or is it just bloggin’? I suppose that those who are against tanking games see a difference between losing on consecutive nights and just losing “on purpose”. In the grand scheme of things, it does not matter if a person is 99.9% die hard fan or just a johny-came-lately who trolls on the NYK, there is a difference between playing/coaching to win as opposed to playing/coaching to lose.
As for Steady, there’s no such thing as 110 percent (%), I only ask for 100 percent because the threshold of percent is per 100–the maximum. There’s an exception of course if you’re African living in Zimbabwe where inflation is at the robust rate of 66,000 percent. That’s ridiculous and almost non-sensical. We the fans can see when the players are giving maximum EFFORT or just going through the motions. I suppose the floor burns, diving for loose balls and playoff NY basketball equal 110%. Figure of speech for argument sake? I see.
Starburyfan,
The MSM quoted an un-named NYK saying that Balkman was not instructed to guard the perimeter/3-pt. line against San Antonio. That statement went against the comments by Monty during post-game interviews. The fans know what’s good. There are charades in the NYC and the fans/media are NOT in control. We can only watch and increase/decrease our fanship through venues like Knicksdefense that you so kindly offer us here. Most frustrating in the whole story is the constant shuffle of the deck (just to pull out three cards–King of Fools, King of Lies, and King of Pain). I’m entertained thanks to you all, so I keep coming back.
Modi,
Hollinger is doing his level best to engage you in the debate about IT the GM. Betrayal and disingenuousness notwithstanding, I believe you should remain steady in your stance on the Book of Isiah.

I don’t like that trade! Zach should not be on the block, it should be Curry and Q!
We should know something this time tomorrow about what our roster will look like!
You guys that are down on Zeke….. lets wait till the end of this season, then
we can speak of facts! Right now the Hawks have just go a lot better!
Lets see what “MONTEY” does! Maybe even help Dallas get Kidd?????

@Peaceman
It is not the best trade, I agree. I was only commenting on this article.
And I agree Curry should be gone first.Curry can’t rebound, can’t defend, can’t block shots. And he does not have the drive/desire/heart to be a domainate player. I guess that’s why Denver wants Zach.
We need more defensive-minded players.
We need a consistance outside shooter(Kleiza wouls help at that).
We need someone, besides Jamal, to run the point.

This trade works better for me.
By D L T Knicks on Feb 16, 2008 at 6:42 pm
DLT,
In the future when we have a true point guard, Zach can be a player!
Zach can shoot rebound and he does hustle, with a true floor General
Zach will thrive! Can’t say the same for Curry! That deal with ATL means LUE
may be cut, he would be a nice pick up if he is, as a bandaid, until the draft. ARTEST is now gone for sure..
I just hope it’s with us!!!!!!!

He is taking a big gamble.Good Luck….I say trade for him.

DLT,
It was Jones, Chandler, Morris and Collins for Artest! It worked!
The Kings are not looking for any big salary trades! They want expiring/small contracts.
Morris and Jones are expiring, Mardy and Chadler are young…so maybe?
It appears that none of the above mentioned Knicks will really be missed!
By Peaceman on Feb 16, 2008 at 7:12 pm
It’ll be a sad day if Zbo winds up being the odd cat out. Granted, sometimes you have to part with a piece you really don’t want to in order to get better, and Kleiza’s athleticism and hustle would compliment Curry’s lazy azz more than Zach ever did, it just bugs the hell out of me that Curry would be the “last man standing” of the two.
All Zach did was what he was brought here to do. Curry’s the one that started actin’ like a little bitch cause there was a little “comp on the post”
Seems to me that Zach’s other sin was not being from Chicago. He might’ve had a fighting chance if he was.
I hope he goes to Denver and does work. I wish him well.

G’town’s loss to ‘Cuse today comes as no surprise. They should have lost the Villanova game but was assisted by a favorable timekeeper. When you go away from the team concept or the coaching (when actually provided) bad things happen–teams lose and people get fired.

Of course Dallas throws in a draft pick or two, they get their point gaurd and two bigs to spell the aging Dampier.
New Jersey gets a slew of contracts that will either expire this year or next year, to along with two 1rst rounders from dallas.
New York gets a big shot blocker, Diop, and two very servicable point gaurds.
So go ahead and make fun of me again.

Seems like the Denver Nuggets are not trying ot secure Zach Randolph b/c that trade would require them to give up to many players on their roster in order to acquire Z-Bo.
http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_8284248
Here’s the clip:
“A newspaper report out of New York stated the Nuggets are interested in the Knicks’ Zach Randolph, but a source close to Denver said that likely won’t happen, because Randolph is a maximum-contract player and Denver would have to give up a lot to get him.”
Same report suggest that the Kings are holding onto Artest in order to obtain more value, should a trade occur.
“A source close to Artest said his gut feeling is Artest will still be on the Kings’ roster come Feb. 22, the day after the trading deadline. Sacramento, for now at least, wants good value for Artest, which would likely mean Denver’s Linas Kleiza — who is playing well for a low salary.”
May I again trumpet DLT’s suggestion that the Knicks try to pitch Curry to the Nuggets in exchange for some players.
Seems like the marquee teams in the West are turning towards power post offense. Curry could provide inside scoring, and who knows perhaps George Karl could get more out of him thann the Master Motivator Monty!
By Orange and Blue on Feb 17, 2008 at 9:35 am
David Stern has officially pronounced that according to him and the N.B.A. script writers the Knicks are done. Put a fork in them.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/2008/02/17/2008-02-17_david_stern_knicks_are_done.html
I know this won’t go well with Peaceman’s breakfast but it’s Emperor, and Master Puppet Master, Stern’s words not mine.
On another note Daily News conspiracy theory is out there that Kenny “The Jet” Smith is indirectly lobbying to replace Zeke in some capacity should Monty be shown the door.

Here are my two takes on DLT’s suggestion that we should pitch Curry to Denver.
Both include an additional player besides Curry since the Denver Post Report above @ post # 29 indicates that the Nuggets are reluctant to trade so many players for just one player. Curry’s contract is about 1/3 Z-Bo’s contract, and the addition of another player in the trade will not foster the sense that the Nuggets are giving up too much to obtain just one player
Suggestion One includes Chandler.
Suggestion two includes Balkman.
It would be interesting to see the Knicks get involved in some trade scenarios with teams from the West, Dallas and Denver, who could be lured into joining the arms race initiated by the Lakers and Suns.
What are your thoughts or suggestions?

Greetings all, Haven’t posted in a while… hope everyone is well.
In my artic backyard is the model the Knicks should follow. And that’s gut the team. The Timberwolves did an amazing job in cleaning house (I hate to give Kevin McHale any props but I must) and getting out of bad contracts (Mark Blount, Troy Hudson, Trenton Hassell). Now they have one great player, Al Jefferson, and if they don’t get too stupid and start winning, they will draft number 2. They do have two things the Knicks don’t– team chemistry, and a promising future.
The key to the rebuild are genuine star players… the Knicks have ZERO. They need 2 studs. Look at all of the good teams and they have stars.
How do you get them? Keeping Zeke for the rest of the season (a great move, no joke) will get you one with a top 3 picks. That’s one. Getting out of all of the contracts will get you two. The Knicks have some decent role players (Lee, Balkman, Nate)… but no true stars.
I would dump Curry and Zack for any takers (short contracts in return). Even Crawford.
For the Knicks I would love Derrick Rose. Finally a real PG who distribute and play D.
Hang in there fellas. It’s been a tough year.
By Minnesota Knicks Fan on Feb 17, 2008 at 10:38 am
PS My plan also assumes that Zeke is let go after the season.
I mean let’s be real… what’s a guy got to do to get fired? He’s done it all.

Well peacman
Think of acquiring Kleisa as bridge to land Artest!
Note how the Denver Post article explains that the Kings were incquiring into obtaining Kliesa.
Should the Knicks obtain him, he could be a bargaining chip in a follow-up trade in the summer to land Artet.
What’s your take.
OBTW
If Stern gets involved with matters relating to the whole Sexual Harassment fiasco that occurred this past summer, I think that would be within his purview, since such law-suites aren’t good for the league.
But when it comes to going beyond the level of mere suggestion to an N.B.A. owner that the owner change managment at the Commissioners whim then it does look bad, like tampering, the team has its own soveriegnty and shouldn’t have to add and dropp management at the whim of the Commissioner.
What’s even fouler and fishier to me Peaceman, is that while Stern can’t openly push a team owner to do as he pleases, I wonder what other means could the commissioner use to get his way.
Think about!
Direct his script writing officials to shaft the Knicks on close calls that could’ve gone the Knicks way or deny the team the benefit of the doubt on some questionable calls.
Look at how easily the Celtics were rebuilt when two chums from the Celtics “old boy” networkd were allowed to rewrite the Balance of Power of the east w little fanfare.
Look at how during this season, the Lakers were allowed to acquire a star scoring big man to supplant their up anc comer Bynum, in a trade many questioned.
And don’t let me get into Stern’s history of being a master control freak, with his player dress code bullshyt!
Shyt like that makes me think that Stern and his minions, crooked refs and all, have other means besides mere suggestion to force owners and the league to follow his script.

By Orange and Blue on Feb 17, 2008 at 12:02 pm
MODI, makin sense as usual. I don’t believe in out-an-out tanking either, but you can legitimately get the same effect by playing the youth a lot more. Why not let em learn while there’s not much pressure. At this point there’s no excuse for not playin em or getting the bench anchors some burn. Jerome and Morris aren’t trade bait, only trade ballast at best. Spend the rest of the season experimenting with some different combos using the whole roster, for five games at a time.
Also agreed that the guys before Balkman, MODI’s 9-19, collectively, aren’t exactly setting the league afire. Of that bunch, Brewer is def the real deal and Thabo and Rodney are proving useful afterall. There’s no question tho that Balkman at #20 is a pretty darned solid #20 pick.
That said, there were some guys after him that were obviously also good risks as well with appreciably more upside. One of the cardinal rules of drafting is supposed to be that you avoid picking based on need, always go for the most talented available. On that score, skipping out on Rondo or Farmar or or Lowry or Rodriguez b/c you don’t want to make Marbury antsy or pass on Boone cuz you’ve hitched your wagon to Curry as your “franchise” center is bad policy. Tsk tsk!
You can’t fail zeke on the Balkman pick, but you’ll have a hard time making the argument that he was the only quality pick or the best possible pick at that point.
