Spurs at Knicks

February 8, 2008 – 1:50 am

Plenty of Knicks tickets still available for those that wish to go.

Just wanted to take the time to apologize to the New York Press if I stepped out of line including them in the photo blog. Also, sorry to the New York Giants, an MSG usher, the Knicks City Dancers and the MSG jumbotron for photographing them as well (they all could care less, I’m certain).

As newspaper subscribers, we are familiar with New York Press through their words, so when I noticed later on at home that they were in the background of one photo, I cropped the photo to seem as though I was focusing on them and continued to label it with the people I recognize having read all their work over the years as a fan. I thought it would be fun to include them in my light-hearted jokes about the game, but apparently someone did not find it very funny, as we even got some hate mail back in the form of comments. Some of these guys are only comfortable when they get to write their own words, but we should all have that opportunity in America in the 21st century. It is sad what is happening in this country, the corporatization of what was once the liberty to speak. Again, it was all meant as a joke, and maybe it was a tasteless one at that, so don’t make threats about big daddy David Stern having the time to pick on Joe Schmoe blogger. I told Alan Hahn about the photo, and he was cool with it, for the record.

Moving on: don’t look now, but the Knicks have lost seven in a row again, and the NBA Champion Spurs are in town. The Spurs will have to take a submarine to get to the game tonight because the Knicks are at the bottom of the ocean now sporting a ghastly 14-35 record, pre-all-star break.

I have no explanation for Isiah’s continued employment at Madison Square Garden. It is the most illogical thing I have ever witnessed. Perhaps Dolan doesn’t want to write another settlement check should he fire him. Isiah wants to pocket that money, so he halfheartedly and questionably continues to coach and manage this Knicks team until something gives. The problem is, nothing is giving. Nobody wants to make a change.

Curry played well during stretches of last game, I’d have to think Curry’s play from here on would be a major factor in any rally towards the playoffs, and away from 2008’s top lottery picks. Conversely, if no major changes occur, are we shooting for Memphis point guard Derrick Rose? I haven’t caught a single Memphis game yet, but just going from the video, looks like another undersized two-guard to me, although perhaps superior to all of the short two guards on this Knicks roster. The proof is in the number one ranking of the undefeated Memphis Tigers.

  8. Peek-a-boo.

I’m here in Chicago. Attended a funeral yesterday: the gracious mother of my older three siblings (same father) who I didn’t know I had until I was 16, the oldest of 8. Funny how life is — all 111 of us got along fairly well and the elder’s mom hung with mine during her cancer demise. Really impressive man. I mention that for two reasons: first to echo Peace adn Knicks Defense in reminding folks that we are a complicated and complex people — simple analysis and assumptions will not do. Second, despite the anonymity of this pursuit, I feel like her spirit deserved a mention from me on one of my favorite spots.

With that said, I felt like I was watching a funeral precession the last time I watched the Knicks (v. Clippers). Dead Team Walking. I* am uninspired and have nothing good to say. If I have nothing good to say, my spirit says shut the hell up and and something positive to contribute somewhere else. I can’t even muster up the energy to rebut starbury-struck Statesman who we all know knows the obvious. Not even worth wasting the energy on that discussion, but the truth is that better play doesn’t amount to much if we are not winning when we should. Those Starbury era blowouts feel only a little worse than the close game incompetence of this losing streak. It all still feels bad.

So I’m still peeking in, just don’t have a thing to write that is worthy of your time or mine for that matter.

Great job KD. Love the pics. I know a smart young lawyer who would give David Stern a run for his money if you have any problems with the Nothing But Actors Guild. Call me off line and I’ll give you the details. We call him “The Equalizer.”

    Love, Peace and Blessings.

  10. ‘Lives’,

My sincere condolences go out to you. ‘Lives’, SPORTS is just a diversion from the real world, and your
current experience is certaintly REAL WORLD. Although you and I have/will disagree, I am only expressing
MY analysis of the situation. It’s no different than two brothers disagreeing on whether Halle Berry or
Tyra Banks is FINER. Just an opinion, mixed with some jabs. The Knicks are not life & death, and besides
as Steady writes, I have not seen the script.
    Stay Strong,

  16. Deepest sympathies Lives.
one step backwards, two steps forward, eight steps backward….
The coaching staff must either be terrified to say or do anything meaningful because I see this decline as their fault.True there have been injuries but that is part of the game. They have not capitalized on the learning experience. The team had been playing harder, but now, not particularly smarter. When you lose the same way with the same guys making the same errors it’s the coaches’ fault.Jamal is playing like a rudderless boat.Everyone can see he shoots better when he has time to plant his feet. What’s with all the off the dribble desperation shots when the situation is not yet desperate?Run a play when you need a basket.Do we have any? This is not the playground. If you think it is you have the wrong job.The coach should have the first and last word, use it.The whole team needs to sit down and watch, “Patton”.On a team energy needs to channeled with self discipline. That’s what coaches teach, the successful ones seem to.To all the guys who think laughing off your losses is the key to success, remember, your next employer is watching.I wonder if the Celtics laugh about their losses in the locker room? Not if they don’t wan t to remove KG’s foot from their collective asses.Better to die on your feet than live on your knees!Even better yet, Better to live on your feet and make others die on their knees! (figuratively speaking of course!)Gentlemen Knick warriors,if I may.NYC, is not about quitting. We may lose here, but we don’t quit, check your passport. then check your heart to see if you’re in the right city,DO NOT!DO NOT GO GENTLY INTO THE NIGHT!
Oh yeah Lives, how ’bout those Celts?
Hat off to Steve Kerr, hell of a trade, everybody is in trouble if the Suns stay healthy!Unfortunately, not our problem!LGK

  18. Lives, a classy and intelligent guy deserves an elegant message….but I too am feeling a bit uninspired, so I will have to settle for sincerity: My best wishes for strength, health and a sense of peace go out to you & yours.

Tonight’s game is an interesting one. Often these types of games against a seasoned, superior opponent can be an opportunity to show yourself to be a loyal soldier and good teammate.

i think Nate and Stoudamire going at it will be entertaining. Zeke Mighty Mouse project v.1 versus v.2! i think Nate can seriously get in his head early with some scrappy, pesky play.

Balkman seems a bit more springy lately, hopefully he is hitting his stride and leaving minor nagging injuries behind. Hopefully this results in MORE PLAYING TIME FOR TAZ!

Sixth man Manu Ginobilli recently had a interesting comment which said “In the past i have complained about playing 28 minutes a night, because i feel like i am not playing enough. But now with injuries, i am starting and playing forty minutes plus a night and i feel like i am tired for stretches and am playing too much. Bottom line is that players are never really happy!”

Yes, he did say that last line, funny and true indeed. Tman, there does appear to be a schism between coaches and players (certain players at least). This is not the first locker room to get fractured into one or more “factions” by losing or off-the-court troubles, nor will it be the last. But i think the best thing for everyone concerned is just to commit to giving full effort between the lines, and being 100% focused on carrying out Isiah’s orders to the best of your ability.

i can’t think of anything more suitable than for the Knicks to snap a seven game losing streak by upsetting the champs - it would kind of symbolize the entire season in a nutshell.

    LGK!

By Peaceman on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:07 pm

  90. I hear you O&B….it’s cool to have your opinions.

I just feel like we’ll never get anywhere with the current team we have.

Since Isiah won’t make any moves…the only way to clearly get better is
through the draft. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that.

It may seem weird to you guys for a while but eventually you’ll get use to
me not cheering for the Knicks.

I truly in my heart hope the Spurs win tonight and I hope the Knicks lose, lose and
    lose some more.

By DaVonn Obama Jefferson on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:09 pm

  91. Nice shot Jamal….keep taking those bad shots buddy.

    Manu with the lay up!!!

Like I said half hour ago….this game is over.

Soon as the Spurs got it under 10…I knew it was a wrap.

    We should be!!!!!!!!!

  95. Terrible coaching!!!

    Bunch of slackers!!!

By DaVonn Obama Jefferson on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:18 pm

  96. I know you guys are disgusted. So much so you can’t even type.

Did you hear Walt, Kenny and Breen say the Knicks look like they
just want the game to be over?

    It’s that obvious….
If they could say Isiah should be fired on TV….they would!!!!

    Terrible….just terrible.

By DaVonn Obama Jefferson on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:23 pm

  99. That’s a bytch as crowd.

Knicks play hard competitive- not to mention some bonehead plays to leave Finley open, and their inability to hit clutch free throws.

Still the crowd with it’s fucking booos.

By Orange and Blue on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:24 pm

  100. 14-36
    14-36
    14-36
    14-36

Let that soak in a little bit LOL….

Out of 50 games…we’ve LOST 36 of them!!

    Wow!!!!!

By DaVonn Obama Jefferson on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:24 pm

  101. Yeah DVJ

I can understand coming up short.

    I can’t understand not competing.

    They did that tonight.

Yes of course, they should have had a guy on Finley but heck so many messed up things have happened to result in losses for the Knicks.

If Isiah goes. I honestly hope that guys who deserve to stay do indeed remain.

I know you think all except Lee and Nate should go.

I would keep Balkman, and if we are to be mathmatically eliminated, then lets play Morris and Chandler.

But while there is still hope this team just can’t throw in the towel.

I hated that about Boston, and IMHO it’s a cowards way out.

    Lets Go Knicks!

By Orange and Blue on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:29 pm

  102. Listen ya’ll

I think this team is showing some fight.

They also tend to revert to one on one play and the same old Crawford isos when things get tight.

The ball stops moving, teams take advantage of that predictability.

To some extent that’s on the coach.

But the inability to hit the free throws when you need to also hurts.

With the Knicks if something is going well another aspect of their game is not going well.

While I don’t think this team will get to the postseason, I don’t think we’ll lose at as prolific a pace as the Heat, Sonics, and Wolves.

So we might as well develop the players on this team that are worth developing.

Some guys do have to go.

For expiring contracts and late roud picks if possible.

By Orange and Blue on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:34 pm

  103. Stop it Davonn…
This is my team and I’ll go down with them before I
comitt to rooting against them! That’s pure bullshit!
We played our asses off tonight and the Spurs got a Miracle
with that last second Fuckup! May Shaq & Nash kick Kobe’s ass back
back to demanding another trade! Lets GO SUNS!!!!

By Peaceman on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:34 pm

  104. GSW vs Detroit or the Magic for the Chip!!!!
    Lets GO GSW!!!!
ABBTL.ABBTL. ANY BODY BUT THE LAKERS!

By Peaceman on Feb 8, 2008 at 10:38 pm

  105. DVJ

was the first guy to boldy predict 57 wins

and is the 1rst to shit on the team when their struggling.

Yes some genuine changes need to be made, and we all have something to say about it.

But Like I said to Trane, I don’t relish in another person’s misery and rooting for the Knicks to lose is like rooting for the team and the players to only know misery. There has to be some sunlight in the midst of all this grey.

Regardless of what happens this team needs to develop healthy habits, and work ethic, play aware of the situation, and conscious of passing the ball to open up easier shot opportunities.

I will never root for misery.

I cheer on hope and a fight or die approach.

  107. Thanks for the kind and consoling words Gents. Every day is so precious — an unpromised gift.

I decided to watch the game on ESPN Gamecast and Knick Defense again, braced and prepared for the worst. The “worst” didn’t happen — but the substitute result still felt as bad. How, how, how did the Knicks lose the only three point shooter (Michael Finley) that they had on the floor? I appreciated the Spurs players explanation that they took advantage of Balkman’s youth and inexperience, which was funny to hear since it echo Thomas’ latest statements which sounded a bit Monty-ish. Balkmen was cheating and trying to play the two, when he should have just played the three. I think I’ve been saying this, but Balkman is still relying on his speed, hustle and athleticism and not his brain. I hope this was a hard lesson learned for him. This is not the first time he has played the situation wrong. C’mon Balk, please don’t do that shyte again.

I do understand the perspective that one can root for the team by rooting for the lottery and the firing of Thomas’: I understand, but I must admit it is more difficult to read that perspective during game time than it is to listen to Breen or sit in a room full of Celtic fans and Paul Pierce. That is not a request that anyone (DVJ) change their perspective (I support diverse viewpoints amongst our legion), but I want my viewpoint to be known… I do know how to do a fundamental skip-pass from the chest.

    Disappointing.

BTW, why did Wilson Chandler start and get only 9 minutes. Did that one TO and 2 rebounds make Zeke unhappy? What was that about?

    Later.

Isiah Takes Shot At Knick Media Policy
    February 9, 2008 - 5:36 am
    New York Daily News -
Knick coach Isiah Thomas took a shot at the team’s suffocating media policy on Friday, the New York Daily News is reporting.

In response to comments Nets president Rod Thorn made concerning their level of interest in Shaquille O’Neal, Thomas said: “I don’t know if Rod would say that if he was with the Knicks. I don’t know if he would be that free to comment like that.” [READ]

  112. Ok before I am out for the day and perhaps the remaider of the season…

Here is some news regarding your Eastern Conference Cellar Dwelling New York Knicks!

Mighty Mouse West- the Eastern Conference’s version resides in New York amongst other rodents who inhabit the subways and slumway of the NYC- takes a stand for Isiah Thomas in his season of despair.

    Go NY Go NY GO!

Zach Randolph the Knicks own version of Mighty Joe Young, admits that the losing is starting to get to him.

    Go NY Go NY GO!

It’s official, the medical procedure to remove Bone Spurs from Stephon Marbury’s ankle, never mind his skull, has resulted in complications which will keep the enigmatic Bi-Polar Knicks’ Point Gaurd out for the rest of the season.

Can the Knicks now officially petition for that injury exception and try to obtain a Point Gaurd to replace Marbury and Back up Rose who we will likely be taking in the draft!

    Go NY Go NY GO!

Trade rumors are swirling involving the Knicks and Bulls!

Then we’ll have a problem scoring LOL.

I’d rather have the defense instead of the offense.

    Change in 08!!!!!!

By DaVonn Obama Jefferson on Feb 9, 2008 at 10:02 am

  115. So let me get this straight, the Knicks are winning by 3. All the Knicks need to do is guard the three or foul and they’ll get the ball back in position to win. So what do the Knicks do they give up the three letting the game go into over time. Also in the overtime, Thomas showed the inability to substitute. For a guy in the hall of fame, this guy knows nothing about coaching. He can’t manage the clock or substitute.

Also, the fourth quarter proved that David Lee, Balkman, Zach, Crawford should be 4 of the five starters. When they’re on the court together, good things happen.

How do retard African Peacewoman and KKKandiman feel about Isiah now and about this wasted season?

By ed drossman on Feb 9, 2008 at 12:31 pm

  116. @Obama

At this point I don’t care who we get,JUST SOMEBODY.

I need a reason to take more of this pain this Knick team is dishing out.

Starting to believe it is Zeke that has to go for us to win.

I always gave him the benefit of the doubt,no more,no mas!

    By D L T Knicks on Feb 9, 2008 at 12:32 pm

  117. Ouch!

    Drossman has infested Knicks Defense.

It seems he is trying to communicate a big I told you so!

I don’t know the history between the former KK guys and the Dorss effect but please don’t let this virus spread!

By Orange and Blue on Feb 9, 2008 at 1:54 pm

  118. DLT

The losing bothers me as it bothers most fans.

But at this point the losing is the result of mistakes relating to a learning experience that the younger players should have been experiencing earlier in the season or last year, then I’ll be ok with it.

    Why?

Well the young guys, and not the players with dibs on Thomas, should play.

Also while, peaceman is correct that no draftpick is gauranteed to turn the Knicks fortunes around, a high draft pick might help us secure a player who fit a particular need.

By Orange and Blue on Feb 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm

  119. Hey Peace…today, I’m your worst nightmare!!!

I’ve been thinking this for a while now but didn’t want to upset you. But a writer for the GS Warriors wrote it…so I’m not such a bad guy. Zeke has

    Warriors should trade for Artest

The Warriors are NBA rebels. Davis is the NBA’s least-heralded bona fide star. Jackson is the face of everything that’s wrong with the league despite being a rather nice guy and a great teammate — and a really good player, it turns out. Coach Don Nelson is regarded as a gimmicky mad scientist though he’s one of the game’s greatest minds. The most recent addition, forward Chris Webber, is hardly as revered as you’d expect from one of the most influential big men of the modern era, having changed the game with his combination of size, skill and athleticism.

So, since the Warriors are filling the Rodney Dangerfield role, why not go all out and trade for Sacramento Kings forward Ron Artest?

By BARF on Feb 9, 2008 at 3:13 pm

  120. BARF,
That trade would make me a GSW Fan! After the Knicks!
Kansas ST vs OKLA ST is on right now. Espn is Pimping Beasley! I’m telling you guys
this is a weak draft! Not One Franchise player that I’ve seen! Beasley may be Frye 2!!!!!!
