Knicks Defense Progress Report
by knicksdefense on January 25, 2008
Twenty-four defenders responded with completed surveys. Thank you for your time. Two defenders, perhaps drunk at the time, submitted blank surveys (boo!). Their halfhearted Curryesque effort has been omitted from these results.
Remember that this survey was complied from real die hard knicks fans, so this data is far more valuable than the payed actors in the MSG TV commercials that claim to be real knicks fans.
Here we go!
One word to describe the Knicks’ effort this season:

Thanks for the updates guys. That was a much needed win. Takes some of that Boston stink off of us. With our win and their loss we just gained a full game on Chi, Philly, Nets, Bucks, Orlando and the Cavs. One back of Philly.
See, the apple core is rotten; N-E-Bod-E could get gotten.
I like that Peace. I know nobody remembers but sometime ago in the midst of my Knickerslacker doldrums I did tell you about my dream of two eight game winning streaks around this time in the schedule (O’k so it was 5 out of 7, I’ll take it). You just pointed out the basis for that dream. But new found effort can make that a reality. I must admit that I was not certain that the effort would ever come (I couldn’t predict Steph would be gone before Zeke) but it has and most of those games we can win on effort alone.
I’m not buying wins in GS and Portland, but those wins would really make me happy enough to visit LA again just to laugh at people around playoff time.
LGK.
Current NBA Injury List
=======================
http://www.tsn.ca/nba/injuries/
Regarding the injury list, an interesting read is the Lakers MASH unit.
It seems I’m never going to have the time to finish this so I’m just going to let it fly as is. It’s the next part of my Why Should We Have Hope series regarding where our help is coming from. Now all we have to do is help ourselves by winning some games. It was started on a couple of days ago so please forgive the dates and records being slightly off.
Part II …something to think about. We are 9 games out of 4th place in the East. We will need our neighbors to continue to help us out by losing while we win. So who’s in front of us? Note: This is not intended to be a complete breakdown of the teams ahead of us; merely an assessment of where our help will be coming from. It is written with a slightly homer slant so please forgive the lack of objectivity in some cases.
New Jersey (18-23)
=================
Help is on the freaking way. Somewhere along the line, Lawrence Fraud lost his team. Insert analogy here about the girlfriend who cheated on you and married the guy she cheated with only to have her cheat on him too. What should he have expected? They did Byron Scott the same way after he took them to the finals twice. Losers of 6 straight, they miss Krstic. But as their woes continue, they inch closer and closer to striking distance. They were in the coveted eighth spot, but after last night’s massacre at the hands of the Sacto Kings they fell to ninth; percentage points behind Indiana.
Upcoming games: @ Golden State, @ Denver, @ Minnesota, vs Milwaukee, @ Miami, @ Atlanta, vs LA Lakers, @ Orlando, @ Charlotte, vs Dallas, vs Minnesota, @ Toronto, vs Chicago, @ Indiana, vs Indiana, vs Orlando, vs Milwaukee
Two toughies to start with but then they have a few bunnies with Minnie, Milwaukee and Miami. The rest should play out fairly difficult for them. We shall see. I see help on the way here.
Atlanta (17-21)
Losers of 4 of their last 5.
Upcoming games: at SuperSonics, at Trail Blazers, at Suns, at Clippers, Nets, 76ers, Lakers, Cavaliers, at Rockets, Pistons, at Bobcats, at Lakers, at Kings, at Warriors, at Jazz, at Spurs, Kings, Knicks, at Celtics
The next three teams are on the bubble and could be had.
Toronto (22-19)
Cleveland (22-18)
Washington (22-17)
***REPOST******REPOST******REPOST***
Just sparkin’ conversation. WMAP. (Wins Make Anything Possible)
Philadelphia (16-25)
===============
Was starting to jell for Coach Cheeks, until new GM Stepanski traded Kyle Korver to Utah for a eurobum and a lowish first round pick. Philly responded by going on to lose 8 of their next 10 games. As Stepanski continues to dismantle the present for the future, I expect these guys to start worrying about where they will be come trade deadline time rather than who they should be picking up in zone coverage.
Upcoming games: Celtics, Raptors, Pacers, Pistons, at Knicks, at Bobcats, Bucks, Magic, at Hawks, Wizards.
The Philly Tankfest 2007 should begin in about 5.4.3.2…
Charlotte (16-24)
===============
The Nazr Mohammed trade was big for them because it gave them depth where they were really vulnerable. What can I say? I like their team. I can’t hate on them. They play hard and have some ballers on their squad. Gerald Wallace is a great two-way guy and Jason Richardson was an excellent pick up. Matt Carroll is becoming pretty consistent as a mad bomber although I haven’t seen him play much D to know if he’s an effective defender. There is offensive and defensive balance on this team however. I see this team in the playoffs.
Their upcoming schedule is tough but they could go between .400 (8 wins) and .500 (10 wins) through it: at Hornets, Grizzlies, Spurs, Mavericks, at Bulls, 76ers, at Clippers, at Kings, at Warriors, at Nuggets, at Suns, Nets, at Pistons, Lakers, Hawks, at Spurs, Kings, at Wizards, at Knicks, at Celtics.
Some winnable games in there but for the most part that is a pretty rough stretch. About 12 of those 20 teams are against the best teams in the league. And 12 of those 20, not the same 12, will be on the road.
Milwaukee (16-24)
==============
Starting the season as a .500 team, the Bucks came down to earth in December with a 4-16 win showing that should be forgotten. Yi is the new NBA darling as they try to solidify their relationship with China and it’s BILLIONS of viewers. Something to think about as you will be seeing more of Milwaukee’s games in the future and I’m sure there will be plenty of Dwayne Wadeish phantom fouls to follow. However, the team has not learned how to exploit the officials and their biases and have not really relied on Yi as much as their guards Redd and Williams. They are winning again at a .500 clip so far in January and as long as they play Philadelphia, Charlotte and Atlanta they should be o.k. However, they will not be playing those teams. I have a feeling they are going to help us out.
Upcoming games for the Bucks: Phoenix, Indiana, @Toronto, Washington, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Houston, Memphis, Dallas, Knicks, Clippers, New Orleans, Detroit, @Detroit, Denver, Cleveland and New Jersey.
Their next few weeks should be brutal. Try not to read the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel anytime soon. They may start printing cuss words in the sports section.
Chicago (16-23)
==============
I don’t get it. They’ve got all the pieces. Two pretty high first rounders from us, solid guards in Hinrich and Gordon. The 60 million dollar man in Ben Wallace. They just lack chemistry. May they continue to burn so that Paxon can feel some of the heat that Isiah has felt. I can’t say that I’m confident they’ll be in the playoff picture, but I think this will be one of the 8 teams we’re fighting with for those final five spots.
Upcoming games through the end of February: @Memphis, Indiana, Charlotte, Phoenix, Minnesota, @Minnesota, @Sacramento, @Seattle, @Portland, @Golden State, @Utah, New Orleans, Miami, @New Jersey, Denver, @Houston, @Dallas, @Indiana, and Washington.
They’ve got a couple of gimmes in there with Memphis, Minnesota, Seattle and Miami but everything else, they’re going to have to battle. They also have a six game and a three game road trip mixed in there.
Indiana (18-23)
===============
Murphy and Dunleavy, candidate #1 and #2 respectively for the Pippen-Rodman award for the ugliest man in the NBA have raised their stock with their better play this year. Turns out that Rick Carlisle is a bum and never has been a “leader of men”. Jim O’Brien following in that trend is alienating pg Jamaal Tinsley placing him on inactive status after telling him to go home a few days this week. The official story is that JT has a sore left knee but they pulled a Steve McNair on him telling him not to come to practice or the game on last Wed. after he showed up for practice. Why would he show up if he was injured? “N.B.A. or a trade perhaps?” Having lost 5 of their last 7, they should’ve traded Murphy or Dunleavy while they could’ve. Now their defensive liabilities are being exposed due to Jermaine O’Neal being out for the next two weeks with a knee injury. Diener is running the show now. Looking forward to watching them implode the rest of the way. I like Granger though.
Upcoming games through the end of February: @Philadelphia, @Chicago, @Milwaukee, @Miami, Detroit, Houston, Orlando, San Antonio, @New York, Portland, Boston, @Detroit, Cleveland, New Jersey, @New Jersey, Toronto, Chicago and @Toronto
Fairly easy road four-game road trip to start with made more difficult by JO’Neal being out. Followed by Detroit and the Texas Swing a trip to the Gardens and the toughest teams in the Atlantic. Indiana may be in a giving mood and may lose a bunch of those games IMO.
COMING SOON the next five in our way: New Jersey, Toronto, Atlanta, Cleveland and Washington
Comment by Jay Bee — January 20, 2008 @ 3:15 pm
Great Reads, Excellent Service. I’m addicted again. Thanks Jay Bee.
Lives,
We can beat GSW if we make it a Half court game.
We try to run with them and they will blow us out!
Marty may be a blessing that game. His tempo is that of a
half court game and at 6’6 he can guard Davis. Jeffries and
Balkman should hound Jackson and Nate should hound Ellis!
They have 18 losses so there must be something to exploit?
Zach is an Animal on the boards and imposes his will on whomever!
If he keeps having games like last night, poor African won’t be able to
post anymore! lol
Nick names for Curry? RERUN? Maybe! BOOKMAN? Maybe! NEVER READY EDDY? Maybe!
WIMPY? Maybe! FAT ALBERT? Maybe! KING DONG? Maybe! MacCURRY? Maybe! EAT-CITY? Maybe!
E-KLUMP? Maybe! You guys had me LMAO last night!
Rudy Gay wants you to help him dunk
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/nba_experts/post/Rudy-Gay-wants-you-to-help-him-dunk?urn=nba,63519
Peace:
He who laugh last laugh the best.
Great names for Curry. The Curry story is far from over.
Zach is as good a player as any power forward in the league. Period. No opposition there.
My beef with Zach has always been team ball.
I’m not blind to the fact that Zeke has got to him, and he’s trying to turn the corner, but that’s a hard thing to do, after playing that way for so long. That would be Zeke’s biggest accomplishment as a coach. Time will tell.
I’d much rather the Knicks to win, than say “I told you so.” I’m a Knick fan, first and foremost.
“Won’t be able to post anymore” Ha! At that point this site would be the “blow me” club.
It’s called different perspectives.
With all this said, I’d still trade Zach in a heartbeat.
LMAO. “The Blow Me Club.” Sounds like a movie.
Peace, we agree about what it would take to win. Tell your source to tell the Source. I say Zeke is still too stubborn to do the right thing. Fortunately effort will get us back into the game at some point, but Zeke needs to play a half court, penetration, ball movement game from the start. Curry would need to sit b/c he gets no boards and the wings will be flying.
I would be concerned about Nate trying to pressure Baron an entire game and trying to do it on the offensive end too. Can Jeffries guard Baron? What do you think? I guess not, but probably better than Jamal. I would try it even though he would probably foul out.
Man, a win against GS would be phenomenal. GS should just forfeit to make us happy. Not show up.
Hey guys I’m starting to take seriously the notion that Zeke is punishing players on the DL, pursuant to Dolan’s player criticism policy, after they show him up in public. Didn’t the following players get sick and sit after doggin’ the coach in public: Zach, Marbury and Jones. I don’t think Q sat the next game. I don’t remember but Q has more on the coach than Mebury (Just Bloggin’ unless I’m right).
good job by zeke and the boys to come out on top last night. i think it is an encouraging sign to see us beat teams we SHOULD beat, last night’s win was an example and the other night against Miami we took them out as well.
mardy got the start with fred’s flu-like symptoms, makes you wonder what nate has to do to get the start? or perhaps isiah thinks defensively a seattle back court would be too lacking.
a win on sunday and we’re playing .500 in january. that’s something. stay healthy, keep it “one game at a time” and maybe with consistent hard work we’ll sneak in there and be in contention for a 7 or 8 seed come april. maybe.
don’t look now, but here comes a five game road trip. last time all hell broke loose, but perhaps the knicks will be more successful this time now that the team is more cohesive and zach more content to be in new york (at least this week).
knicks have enough rebounders, curry just needs to challenge shots and get 10-14 attempts at the basket for him to be effective for us. although at the NBA level this doesn’t sound like much, this is asking a lot of curry relatively speaking. it is not the talent or the skills, it is simply the effort that needs to increase.
Golden State, here we come…
LGK!
gerald green just asked the t-wolves for a trade?
so close to the dunk contest? what kind of crap is that?
dude thinks he’s an all-star I guess. he must have the same agent as Demetris Nichols. hasn’t proved anything yet in my eyes to be demanding trades.
if the knicks got him it would be another player aquired based on potential rather than production.
but in all likelyhood, mchale will just deal him back over to boston for a pair of used Nikes. you know, fair is fair, right danny ainge?
LMAO!
don’t look now, but dnice/dlusional got to see the floor for more than 30 seconds last game. sure, it was near the end of a semi-blowout (bulls on the short end), coach mebbe hopin a volley of threes might get them back in it, but he is starting to get some opportunities. up to him to make the most of em. jury’ll be out a little while longer.
great reads, guys. re baron and the road runners, i say throw morris in there and bang these guys old detroit styles whenever they drive. mebbe someone stuck an IV drip down fred’s throat and he’ll be well enough to play this game. we need some hosses, some fas’-runnin ballahz.
I’m with Lives on Zeke punishing people with the flu bug if they get too uppity. I think what he’s also showing them is that there is someone hungry behind them waiting to take their spot if they want to bi+ch out. One more thing, if you demand a trade, don’t be surpised if your name starts circulating in trade rumors or if you get your azz bounced out of here.

Sorry about the double post. Going from blackberry right now.
AF-RI-CAN,
Even though we disagree, I respect your opinion. After reading some of my previous post, I realized that
the tone borders on being dismissive & condescending. I extend a Peace-Branch my brother.
However I still believe that you are off-base w/ Curry. Whenever you are DEE-FENDING someone and
you start w/ ” He is overweight, lazy and does not rebound well for his size”, you are fighting a losing
battle. Then to add, don’t mention how long he has been in the league, he’s only 25. AF-RI-CAN, I
can only conclude that Curry is Personal for you. African you cannot teach aggressiveness to a
guy that has been in the league for 7 years. You can teach technique, angles, how to pass out of
the double teams, but Aggressiveness comes from w/n. Remember, Curry will give you 20 very good games
a year, so don’t think he’s turned it around after 3-4 games.
N8 fg% is as irrelevant as Crawful’s for the 5 games. Just as Crawful’s shooting appears to be
contracting to norm after a hot period, so will N8. I know you will use Crawful’s minutes
as an excuse. His shooting has been consistent for 8 years regardless of the minutes/game.
BTW, what did you do to RockStar? He jumps at you whenever you breath.
Peace & Blessings
Statesman, post 168….
As you might have noticed, I don’t post very much….I’d much rather observe and learn a thing or two.
One thing I’ve observed is that this is forum of very informed, passionate Knick fans like myself, and it does my heart good to see the optimism and good-natured posts from you guys. And even when you disagree, you fellows disagree in an “agreeable” manner….never condescending or insulting.
However a certain person irks me…his posts are arrogant and belittling, so in answer to the below question…
“BTW, what did you do to RockStar? He jumps at you whenever you breath.”…
I jump on him because his breath offends me.
Bye for now.
The Pacers lost to the Heat!!!!!!!
2 L’s out of 8th seed for the Knicks!
African,
I respect your opinion, but I’ve tried to see your point at
every angle and I’m not seeing it! Unless Zach whips it out and
pisses on the court on National TV, will be the only way you are right
on this one!
Guys
Thanks for the play by play.
I wasn’t able to catch last nights game but like fellow bloggers here I know I can count on the defenders to provided the play by play and the outstanding color commentary that only KnicksDefense can provide.
I heard the commentary about how Zach was passing out of the double teams in this game. Zach’s willingness to pass out now seems to be becoming more trend than fad, which is a good thing. I certainly hope he continues to work on his passing and continues to develop chemistry (no homo) with his teamates. I have said before that his ability to draw so much attention can be used to the Knicks favor but what WAS frustrating about the early season Z-Bo was his stubborn insistence on forcing the action when doubled. While, I concede Follymachs point, made in a prior thread, that a little stubborn insistence on the part of Z-Bo will go a long ways towards keeping defenses honest, a team oriented Zach who is dedicated to honing his passing skills to exploit over zealous defenders, and doubles will go a long way towards increasing the Knicks playoff chances.
Too bad the same can’t be said about Curry, I saw the stat lines for the game, and there were no assist from him. Off course since I didn’t see the game, I don’t know if he provided any passes that led to passes which became assist. So I really can’t comment.
What I will say about the Curry v. Randolph debate, is that Z-Bo is showing tangible efforts towards gearing his game towards the team concept that have shown up in the box score. Curry has attempted to block shots, in the games I’ve watched but he seems at times a step slow, and with regards to his rebounding many a time I see Curry either start falling away on defense or just stand there when a shot carums, where if Curry just hustles or competes the rebound is his to have. Too that end Curry’s weight or desire remain clear question marks, and Z-Bo, IMHO, is showing his long term staying power with these Knicks while Curry continues to hurt his own case for why he should see significant minutes.
Again thanks defenders, Lives, Steady, Statesman, ForceMD (Bronx, Harlem, DLT, MODI), KnicksD, JayBee, GeorgeM, Vic Corbit, Cooley High (aka KD Jakes), Anti, Paulnoize, Mike, African, BARF, St. George, and all and any defender I’ve forgotten to mention.
This place is off the hook and KnicksD has done a splendid job creating a place were the true die hard can grab a cup of cofee and throw down Knicks insights, opinion, and commentary with the most passionate and knowledgable group of die hard fans on the globe.
To a band of cyber brothers from other mothers.
Peace out
