MLK game: Celtics at Knicks

by knicksdefense on January 21, 2008

Game time 1pm.

What better way to honor the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., than with a victory over the Celtics–and don’t tell me I have a dream, we can beat this team if we show heart and play smart.

Expert Frank Isola was on NBATV tonight sounding much like Lives saying the team has turned a corner. He said that he expects the Knicks to put up a good fight tomorrow (still Isola said the C’s would win, but who wouldn’t on national TV?). He did that very same kind of backpedaling at this time before, didn’t he? “I always thought this would be a playoff team,” was the exact quote during the 6-game streak if I recall correctly. Isola the jellyfish fence-straddler needs to just pick a side and quit calling loyal Knick fans everywhere “male groupies.”

I missed that Nate Robinson dunk in the first half of the Miami game, fortunately Alan Hahn found the video on youtube, check out Knicks Fix if you wish to revisit the footage. Somebody please tell nate if he uses his supreme talent to focus on defense he’ll have plenty of opportunities for more dunks in the game. Anticipate passes, read the passing lanes, he’s been studying Steve Nash tapes to become a better playmaker and that’s great, but he should supplement that with some Muggsy Bogues tapes if he has the time. Anyway, Nate has been doing a great job lately so I’m happy for him.

That’s two dunks for Nate in Miami thus far in his career. Does Nate even have a shoe sponsor yet? Would Steve and Barry’s possibly be interested?

Noize-Trinnipapa,

Good and useful post that.

You gents were great. I just watched the game and then perused some good reads and game-time commentating. I don’t remember what poster suggested catching up that way, but it is fun. I enjoyed the game and was impressed that the Knicks did not give up and that Curry actually started to play late in the game, justifying having him and not Lee on the court for a couple of minutes. I mean he actually jumped for rebounds and used hard fouls. Somebody pissed the big fella off. Further proof that Curry is a chump. He does it when he wants to and he clearly does not want to do it enough. It should really piss Zeke off. But I concur with him comin’ in on the second unit and playing his azz off until Zeke pulls him out. Use those fouls.

My my somebody’s got their draws all in a bunch. Peace and Blessings takes a day off on MLK Day. And somebody picked their cheek up off the floor and commenced to throwin’ haymakers and trying to put people under the tracks ala Dick Dastardly and Simon LaGreedy. Can’t we all just get along.

I really enjoyed the game, perhaps because I was afraid we would really get our azz kicked and not fight back. The Celts are the best team in the league and they have been killing better teams than us, but we hung in their and showed some fight. We have some deficiencies but even a blind person could see that we are a different team than we were when they pummeled our butts. As I said before, we have a glaring deficiency at point (still). JCraw cannot play an entire game and do his thing at the end. All jumpshooters were off — happens when you’re tired. JCraw was huffin’ and puffin’. We were still shooting jumpers while we were in the penalty. Go figure, except that the Celt defense is sweet. I love Garnett. He should be MVP. I hate that he is a Celtic. I agree that McHale should be investigated by NBA Security for player laundering. But I bet it was part of the script — Boston cheats to increase its chances for lottery success; Stern notices that their cheating is more obvious than the rogue ref and makes sure they don’t get a good bounce in the lottery; and then he rewards them by sanctioning a buddy-trade to make Boston relevant again. (Just Bloggin’)

But really, we have no match for Garnett. He plays with such intensity all the time. He is just the best of the best. His killer instinct matches Kobes. If Lebron had that Killer instinct he would be Magic Jordan.

There is a lot of useful information in that game. Balk is always practicing threes, Why? Why not get your three the conventional way since no one can stop your drive and you can’t hit a backboard from the three point line. Curry is becoming very proficient from the line. Jared is such a Barney Fife, on offense his six shooter has one bullet and it is usually not in the gun. But that is one useful dude on D-fense.

They started with a nice strategy to slow down the pace of the game. Good idea. Not well executed however.

This game is a good sign for the games against Phillly, Seattle, Utah and LA. Again as BARF said, we do not match up against Golden State and Stud Davis is gonna make mincemeat pie out of matador Crawford.

LGK, the score did not reflect the effort but the disparity in the quality of the “teams”. We’re not there yet, but we are headed into the right direction, right to the unlocked door in the wall around the corner.

Peace and Blessings

Funny of the evening!!! Thanks, Lives!

Checked out B&B calling Rondo a Raptor lookalike?

I think Peaceman calling, Zach: Mighty Z-BO Young!!! True, I made that observation on opening night.

Funny stuff!

4 Black and Blue January 21, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I think it has got to be either Jones or Mardy attempting to gaurd Davis.

I know he’ll probrably roll them also but then Crawford won’t be abused and can reserve his energy to do his thing on the Defensive end.

Yo Anti

I think Mighty Joe Young every time I see Z-Bo.

Knicks need to regroup and the three days off is what the Dr. ordered.

Friday will be an opportunity to get back at the Sixers.

5 George M. January 21, 2008 at 11:52 pm

I think its time that Curry plays 10 min max like Q is getting now.We need to experiment to see if James or Morris can start next to Z-Bo.Or play next to Z-Bo,my bad.If Curry refuses to become the interior presense that we need him to be then FUCK HIM!!! Running Z-Bo in the low post is more reliable than Edwina backing his/her big ass up in the post then turning/farting/missing/turning over or fouling offensively.I’ve had it with that fat turd.Boy did GM Fudd screw up by getting this fat loser.I can’t stand it anymore!!!!!

“Isiah Thomas laughed when someone compared the Celtics’ overnight turnaround — sparked by trades for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen last summer — to the Knicks’ plodding rebuilding effort. “They got Kevin Garnett,” Thomas said with an incredulous smile. “That’s a Celtic trade.” He was referring to the fact that Garnett was traded to Boston by Kevin McHale, the vice president of the Minnesota Timberwolves and a Celtics legend. “I have to wait for Dumars,” Thomas joked, referring to his old backcourt mate Joe Dumars, the Detroit Pistons’ team president. … Stephon Marbury, who is scheduled to have ankle surgery Tuesday, watched the game from the locker room. He did not speak to reporters.”

dumars isn’t ever going to hook Isiah up with jack. He’s delusional if he thinks that. Isiah, this is NYC, this is not Detroit, so the analogy doesn’t hold water. Those Piston days are over. Detroit is now your enemy, they will never help you here in NY. Dumars does not think he’s helping the pistons by giving the knicks anything. for all the great things you did as a player, people look only on what you are doing now, because people don’t live in the past. NY demands current results and nothing less. Arrogant statements about winning championships when you’re in second to last place in the conference will not do. It shows that Isiah is still thinking in terms of his greatness as a player instead of his entirely different career as GM/coach.

“AM I MANIPULATIVE OR AM I CRAZY: TO BE OR NOT TO BE, THAT IS THE QUESTION”

Out, damned spot! out, I say!
–Lady Macbeth, Act V, scene i

That isn’t to say Marbury hasn’t gone around the bend. His courthouse performance and deteriorating play were only part of the problem. “I think he’s lost his mind,” says Jeffrey “Slice” Morton, an old friend who lived with Marbury during his rookie year in Minnesota until the two had a falling-out and who now speaks with him only intermittently. “He says he’s seen the light, but people that are saved don’t act the way he acts. I think he’s confused.”

Marbury may be crazy, but he’s no one’s fool. As Morton also observed, in reference to Marbury’s “Coney Island’s Finest” tattoo, “Stephon is gonna do anything in his power to be the finest, manipulating, destroying, conniving—whatever he’s gotta do.” It may be distasteful, it may be incredibly selfish, and it may be conveyed verbally via non sequiturs, but his style does get a certain kind of results. Marbury himself had admitted as much. In the midst of our upbeat Charleston conversation about religion and the new season, he raised the subject of his reputation for selfishness.

“If I didn’t play the way how I played, I wouldn’t have gotten no max contract,” he said. “They can talk about whatever they wanna talk about me, because I got maxed. I’m a max player. Don’t get mad at me, because I’m telling you what’s real. One plus one is two, all day long, and it’s never gonna change. And that’s factorial

Well, there goes that personal interaction the ole man needed to support (if not prove) his point about his observations about Marbury’s mental state. Now all we need to make this a good argument is for somebody who personally interacts with him to tell us he’s really not messed up. (almost just bloggin’). Truthfully, that last comment, assuming it is true (and it sounds genuine as a mug), explains a whole helluva lot: it shows the foundation for all of Marbury’s career decision-making which as we all know has been about “maximizing” his opportunity as the “chosen one” to help uplift his family. That logic is not crazy and makes perfect sense. Selfish in a team sport? Sure. Uncommon? No. Smart business sense? Well, more like a poor application of “street smarts” where strategic flexibility is needed. The solution for one problem (how to get “maxed”) is not the solution for another problem (how to “max one’s skills in a team sport for team glory”).

If this is all real, then I wonder what ticks inside this man’s head that he continues, after a decent career and all the fortune, to think like a scared kid trying to fight his way out of poverty? Truly that is a rhetorical question, because we know that our childhood foundation dictates our decision-making even in our latest years. But some people learn how to apply those life lessons with moderation not as a “one strategy fits all” approach to life. Even Zeke has been shrewd and more than intelligent enough in life to make strategic adjustments, although you always hear that little fighter boy in his words.

But I think I learned something new (or confirmed something old). Is he CRAZY or is he MANIPULATIVE? Of course one can be “CRAZY” and “MANIPULATIVE.” They are not mutually exclusive traits. Just ask Machiavelli or consider Rasputin or Wile E. Coyote who is a loopy strategizing genius. But he still crazy. That something new or confirmed is that somebody on this blog may be closer to Marbury than all of us combined; certainly “Is Steph CRAZY, or is he MANIPULATIVE?
Isiah is F@CKED, either way.” sounds consistent with the Intelligencer interview and like something that “might” be rattling around Marbury’s head or like a question he posed to a “friend.” (Just Bloggin’. . .sorta).

Yep, I still think I know what’s good. LOL. Will somebody please help me get these “Hotwheel track” marks off of African’s back. Nothing does more damage to a suit than being put under Hotwheel tracks.

fwiw, i’m pretty sure someone mentioned that quotebury before cuz it’s one of my favourites. it rolled out of his mouth on the eve of training camp.

steph, you can’t really run away from yourself. no matter where you go, there you are.

14 Jay Bee January 22, 2008 at 11:12 am

Re: #256 – KD, I think you took the quote too seriously. He was joking. He’s not waiting on Joe D. to throw him a bone. Even he knows if he waited on that he’d be waiting. Joe is a nice guy, but he can be just as cutthroat as anybody else. You’re right though in that Joe’s not going to help him unless it benefits him as well.

But the Garnett deal, you cannot say that there were not better deals on the table, including from the Knicks. McHale not only took a lesser deal, he took a shi++y deal. One that he should’ve been fired for. He took the worst parts of one of the worst teams of last year and traded one of the most highly sought after chips in the market. McHale gets light ribbing as a GM, Isiah gets ripped. I like our team. You know I want The Fat Boys (Eddy, Zach and Q) to get a personal trainer and some Jenny Craig pdq but I like the character and the characters on our team. We’ve got something you can build with and poised to be successful for some years to come.

Re: #250 – Just saw the You Tube videos of Kenny George. Still picking up pieces of my jaw off of the ground. He would foul out of every game but the lane would be so shut down because of altered and blocked shots. And BTW, dunking without having to jump is a pretty neat trick. I can’t wait until he’s a Knick. LOL

I’m just kidding. There’ll be some 8 footer from China probably right behind him. The next generation of big men won’t need shoes, they’ll just tape up their paws with rubber tape.

Good PM Defenders!

PaulNoize, LIVES, STATESMAN, and STEADY, your post from #243 on, were worth the investment of my time this AM, and they were the most useful, very useful…As it Goes, I thought I’d use your line..LOL

The amazing thing to me about all of the Rapid Fire Analysis taking place now, is THAT ALL this SHYTE was Washed and Hung out to dry and Worn during the summer and early fall. The PG with a pass first and defensive mentality, would ECITY Man-Up and Step-Up, Starbury’s eclectic yet selfish persona, balanced starting line-up, Whether our energy TEAM would be utilized properly and seize the those moments in games when they could choke any other TEAM’S second unit, and allow the 1st Unit to bury the dead…I think they even came up with a name for both units that escape me now…COULD MONTY FOCUS IN AND WARD OFF THE EVIL SPIRITS…

Okay Cooleyhigh, so WTF is your point? My point is simply this, from the Acorn to Boardroom, to the Ball Boy, to each and every player, to the increasingly bizarre coaching staff, this collective let outside Forces and inside Weaklings (ECITY, STEPH, and especially ABS) take their Eye off the Prize and this TEAM HAS YET TO REGAIN ITS FULL FOCUS…For that I Hold MONTY, oh yes MONTY, fully responsible for this Bytch Like Behaviour, I want to KNOW, WHEN WILL THE CULPRIT SIT!!!!

Cooleyhigh,
They would like for us to believe that the culprit was sitting in the locker room while our fellas slacked to the beat on the floor. To refresh, we were supposed to be “Nice and Nasty”. We were postin’ and postulatin’ while just bloggin’. We never got the NBA script that we would follow. I mean really folks. What happened to that NYK team that played Boston down in the Pre-season? Those 50-win projections were based on that outpouring. The rotation was set and the ballers balled. I mean really again folks. Why does Eddy leave most games with a dry shirt, a cup of salty nuts and no more than 2 fouls? At this point, we should fuhgedabout KnicksDefense and go for Self-Defense as in our intelligence to decipher the way of Monty the Carpetbagger. Everyone on this blog knows that this team is much better than its record. The players must step up and claim their identity.

Interesting pitch for a Eddy/Marbs for Shaq-Fu deal over at Real GM:
http://knicks.realgm.com/articles/17/20071231/last_stop_for_the_diesel/

i don’t think Riley will ever trade with the Knicks, but one nugget in particular jumped out at me….”the Knicks, who can live with O’Neal clogging up the middle for a few more years and look forward to Fred Jones (after this year) and Malik Rose coming off the books (after 08-09), as well as hope for an opt-out from disgruntled Quentin Richardson, who would make a solid role player for a contending Western Conference team.

Anyone know the dillio on Mr. Brandy’s opt-out clause?

22 D L T Knicks January 22, 2008 at 4:00 pm

@Paul

Nice article, but pleasssssssssssssssssssssssse. Why does everyone want to send every over-the-hill superstar to the Knicks to spend wasted $$$ for NOTHING? Sorry Vince.

Shaq is doing nothing now(see 13 in-a-row losing streak)! I believe he only had 10 points and 5 rebounds vs the Knicks Saturday. And a Problem with his hip. Has not been healthy all year. Not blocking shots.

I know what most are saying……………..neither is Curry.

Well he(Curry) is younger and cost less, and maybe, just maybe, he can get better. If not let him out of his contract.

With Shaq you will get 2 more years of big $$$$ and yellow suits on the bench and he will know that there is no chance to win a championship, and he will not give 100%(see Stephon Marbury).

If Zach/Curry doesn’t work why would someone think Zach/Shaq will? Same type players.

And Smush Parker?Mark Blount?Pleasssssssssssssssssssssse NO!!!!!!

23 knicksdefense January 22, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Jay Bee/JohnQ,

I hear you, check my post at #239, totally agree with you and Isiah.

“of course it always helps to have friends in the league give you the best player in the NBA for a bunch of spare/junk parts because of prior loyalty in the old days. Danny Ainge and Kevin McHale should be imprisoned for unsportsman like business practices. the teams around the league were offering much more than what the T-wolves got for KG, but there were ulterior motives behind that unethical trade, you can tell that by the standout record with respect to the rest of the league. bottom line, you don’t trade an MVP for a bunch of roll players whom may never make an all-star team.”

and I probably did take that quote too seriously, but it is true that isiah’s only gm friend around the league may be walsh in indiana, and since he’d have to go through bird i doubt they’d be making a deal anytime soon either. and that’s an interesting relationship because I keep hearing all these trades regarding jermaine oneal, who is maybe being shopped, a shot blocker who could at least help the knicks in the paint were he healthy enough to play.

Defenders,
Maybe GeorgeM can speak to this from the Miami market but there has been little mention of the effect the Shaq divorce is having on his life and play. I was in Florida for a spell when the news first broke and it devastated Riley. Seems like he and Shaq used to do double outings to charity events, etc. Not making excuses for the Diesel but so far he has delivered on his promise to the Heatians–he delivered the shiney stuff as promised. Now if Z-bo had come in making such a promise then he would get an X-tra pass from me, his identity would be etched next to the Big Fella Though he never did deliver on that shiney stuff).

Does anyone think that the following rules should be instituted to penalize “tanking” or the perception of tanking a season in the NBA.

All while maintaining a teams position in the lottery- means they start off with the standard number of power balls based on their record at the end of the year.

1. Subtract a powerball on any loosing streak beyond 10- nice solid number but arbitrary of course.
2. Subtract an additional power ball, or half a power ball, on any loss past the tenth loss.
3. Subtract a powerball on any consecutive series of blowout losses beyond 5.
4. Subtract an additional power ball, or half a power ball, on any additional consecutive blowout beyond 5.

The kicker
6. Reward the team out of the top five stinkers who sustains any winning streak at 3 or above a powerball taken from the “tankers”.
—-any additional powerballs goes to teams 6-10.
7. Reward the most comptetive team out of the top five stinkers who beats the most playoff teams and/or above 500. teams a powerball taken from one of the “tankers.”
—-any additional powerballs goes to teams 6-10.
8 Reward the most competitve team out of the top five stinker a power ball for any NBA season month in which they sustain a record at or above 500. a powerball taken from the “tanker.”
—-any additional powerballs goes to teams 6-10.

last rule, the fuck you Kevin Mcfail Danny Boy Mainge Rule!
9. In the event the biggest tanker fails to land the big lotto prize, and attempts a trade, the trade must be.
—-run for review by objective NBA analyst– this one is the stretch.
—-lopsided trades, have a presumption of collusion, unless a fair assessment shows that no other team could provide a better package of players than the tanking team and its trade, anal sex, partner.

Again Just Bloggin

Yo DLT

Being that you have a colombiana for a wife, ask her if she’s heard of Betty la Fea?

It’s the colombian version of the Ugly Betty show that ABC mimicked from Colombia.

The Colombian Show is about this very attractive young colombian woman, who is terribly mismatched in her clothing style etc. Of course once she gets the right match going a little self esteem lands her a big gig at a fashion Firm in Colombia.

The Knicks all mismatched and etc are the NBA version of Ugly betty. Thanks to monty the terrible fashion consultant.

Black & Blue,
You have put considerable time intot hat useful post #280. I see the Just Bloggin’ but what about what the Economists call ceteris paribus (with all else being equal)? The Stern Lone Rogue Ref and N.B.A. script elements are missing. Still, you know what’s good.

PaulNoize@ 243,

MLK was a great and Noble man! When we Evolve and understand history, MLK will be eclipsed by our Prince and example of true
Manhood, MALCOM X! An Origional MAN amoung Men! I just like Malcom, don’t advocate violence. I believe like he did, in self protection!
Slap me or my family and I will not turn the other cheek, I will defend my family. Malcom called it “Intelligents.”
So swearing on MLK day is irrelevent to me, no disrespect to MLK!

Back to the Knicks….it’s been a long time, but a Knick was nominated for player of the week!
Although he did not win, Crawford was beat out by Baron Davis and Gerald Wallace!
Congats Jamal, I can’t remember if a Knick was ever considered in the past 4 years by NBA.com!

Steady

Mi Hermano de otra madre

What is ceteris paribus greek for?

With regards to the “lone ‘rogue’ ref!”

There is a very useful and appropriate saying.

THE APPLE, rotten rogue ref apple, DOESN’T FALL TO FAR FROM THE TREE!

I’m sure Stern, the Dark Lord of the Sith who has mandated one of many preconcieved scripts for his darlings this year, will not allow any rules to take effect to work against his arbitrary unlevel playing field and the power of his officiarati/referati and his colleagues in the ole, danny, boy network.

You of course know what’s good!

41 Peaceman January 22, 2008 at 9:36 pm

As Hahn has stated in his recent Blog,
the Knicks are 5.5 games out of 8th seed owned by the Nets and Pacers!
With Oneal being hurt and may be out for the season and Jersey playing terrible
and may trade Kidd and Carter……41 games left to play our best ball!
We need to thump Philly on Friday! Blow them the Fuck out!!!!
Curry needs to sit down…start Jeffries at center with Lee and Zach, hold the
fort down till Ron Ron puts on the O&B…….it’s gonna happen, and I hope Q
and Chandler are wearing Kings uniforms soon!!!!! Only because NO ONE WANTS CURRY!

Hermano mio,
It was in there, like swim wear.

“ceteris paribus (with all else being equal)”

See, the way I look at it, the “tanker” will always cry foul and say that “we tried to win” or “we played to win the game”, blazé, blazé. A team (say the Heat) comes out and lead by 15 at the end of two Qs and then promptly goes on to lose by 5 points. The Riley factor would not lead one to believe it but we see it happen nightly. The HOF ABS coach cries about not wanting to go out like that but forgets that he sabotaged the season just to make his point. What a fugazi of a NYer–bottom of the F’n heap fuh shizzle.

BnB, great proposal in #280. A watered down version might see the light of day one day, but don’t hold your breath … Peaceman, Malcolm X didn’t think much of cussin either ;-) it was just for the day, man, not a huge sacrifice. Good for the soul ;-)

Yo Steady: I live 3hrs. North of Miami.Orlando and Tampa are my local”markets”.The only thing I heard about Shaq’s divorce are what I have heard on tv coverage on ESPN and RealGM and other BBall pages. As far trading goes we won’t hear anything unless Hoopshype.com breaks a story.I really think G.Grunwald was just doing due dilligence and getting a feel for the market on our players. And I also think Glen and Mr.Fudd are playing “chicken” with Sacramento. There’s still a month left before they could lose Ron Ron for absolutely nothing.
