Wizards@Knicks
January 15, 2008 – 4:47 pmJay Bee was right, that old post spanned a couple of days… Time for a new one.
STATESMAN says watch out for Caron Butler, well I have to cosign on that (he killed the Celtics down the stretch in their last outing), but also would add that Antawn Jamison is having a great season doing what we though Zbo would do for the Knicks, put up 20-10 numbers on the season. He’s stepping out and shooting three’s, so the Zbo-Jamison matchup will be an interesting one.
Stephon is starting to remind me of Spree in that he’s had enough chances at redemption and isn’t making the most out of them.
If only they’d put Nate in there with Crawford so we can see how the Seattle backcourt fares at the onset of the game. I think it is safe to say Larry Brown started Nate more times as a rookie by now than Isiah is starting him (just once all season) as a third-year vet during the same stretch of games. I know we need energy off the bench, but when I look at the bench, Fred, Balk, Jeffries and Lee is enough energy I would think. Lets face it, Nate’s height causes defensive matchup disadvantages for the knicks, but what he brings to the team in terms of energy and shooting (best shooter on the team this year) makes up for it. Think Isiah would ever start Nate and Jeffries in the backcourt together? No, he wouldn’t–but isn’t that worth considering? Jeffries did play some two guard for the Wizards before coming to new york. Nate, Jeffries, Balkman, ZBO and Curry. Three scorers and two defensive juggernauts. That’s the kind of stuff you should try when everyone on the knicks team either only plays offense or only plays defense. Just bloggin’ y’all.
Game time in a few…

Lives,
In reference to Butler’s 40+ minutes:
Jamison is averaging 40mpg as well on the season, something I noticed.
By knicksdefense on Jan 15, 2008 at 4:52 pm
af, I hear you about “it’s who finishes”
however, this team has a tendency to get into big holes early in the game, and then we try to play catch-up in the second half. Avoiding that would make winning the game all the more achievable.

By Jay Bee on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Balk has to play more. He adds an athletic presence.
I think it helps also that the team is no longer waiting 2-3 quarters to see if Curry came to play.

Why is Curry in the game?
By DaVonn Jefferson on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Curry could’ve helped out when Haywood scored in the post. Damn, he was right there.
By Bronxboy in Md on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Curry has got to be the LAZIEST defensive player in the league.
I mean, he has no interest on that side of the ball whatsoever.
By Bronxboy in Md on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Who’s guarding Frankenstein????
By Peaceman on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Edwina Curry, who else. The NBA’s biggest sissy.I think he’s afraid to get dirty on defense. One good swat in “Frankenstein’s” face and that bullshit will stop.
By George M. on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Reason we’re winning tonight:
QQQQQQQQQQ
Q 5-8, 10 points, 4 assists (but he started 5-5 so beware in the second half)
Efficient Guard Play
N8 2-4, 5 points
Crawford 4-6, 10 points
Jones 4-6, 10 points
Totals 10-16, 25 points
By Jay Bee on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Lee is aggressively attacking loose balls and rebounds 4 rebounds Zach with 5 rebounds and 8 points. Curry goose eggs but made two free throws for 2 points.
By Jay Bee on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:38 pm
We need to hit em’ hard the beginning of the second half, and limit Edwina’s (love that name George) playing time.
By Bronxboy in Md on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:39 pm
The 2nd half Crawford ,Nate, Lee ,Jeffries and Balkman
should get Major run together! Run them back to DC!!!!!!
By Peaceman on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Hopefully Curry won’t start the second half. We need to have a lead in order for that cat to get some run.
By Bronxboy in Md on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I wonder what African’s “Analytical Eye” thinks about his protege Edwina Curry’s first half performance, or lack thereof????
By Bronxboy in Md on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Knicks looked DAZZED at end of half.
Knicks will find out that Wizards do not have quit in them.
Is there a less athletic front-line then Curry,Q, & Zach. Zach I would keep but the other 2 have 2 go.
Somehow our Resident Malik Rose thinks it is starting Curry & Zach, as opposed to the make-up w/ Q, & Crawful.
Knicks are defensively challenged at 4/5 positions to open the game.
Peace & Blessings
By STATESMAN on Jan 15, 2008 at 8:46 pm

By Anti-NYSportsNews on Jan 15, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Crawford hits 2 straight treys…
I remember the “Analytical Eye” stated that any team with Craw as a starting guard will never win.
What the “Eye” fails to remember is that when Craw went down last year, so did the season.
According to the “Eye”, Curry is the centerpiece of a championship team.
Sounds like the “Pink Eye” to me….

By Jay Bee on Jan 15, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Hey I think “I see things that others do not” is BS, similar to the “Analytical Eye”. However I must say that I agree
w/ African on Crawful. He’s too streaky,(wild shots, unforced turnovers) to start. He is a first guard off the bench.
To beat the Knicks, the Knicks will need to play the energy guys more. Can’t count on Q, to shoot as well the next game. Also
will need Balk to guard Jefferson and Carter.
Peace & Blessings

By Bronxboy in Md on Jan 15, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Curry hit free throws. Balk with the energy 8 points 9 rebounds in limited minutes. Lee was solid. Zach was dubba dubba. N8 14 points and (we’ve found our point guard) 8 assists. Crawford w/29 points and 4 assists but more important he was a respectable 11-19 and 6-7 from three point land. Q started out 5-5 but went 1-7 the rest of the way. I was afraid he would start getting the big head.
Knicks with 6 players in double figures.

Defenders,
For anyone who wants to rave about Puffy C, watch the game and then read the box scores. As you do the Cleo Naismith impersonations, compare N8’s numbers at 5′7 to Puffy C at 6′fat. I’m Steady and the Force MDs will testify, I am N8.
Peaceman,
You could finally be right (for the nth time?), we may just have turned the corner.
Force MDs,
Revenge is a dish best served cold. Bring the bunsen burners and hide the hibachis for the Miracle on 7th St NW 1/18. Looks like your force was increased by one–via PR no mas. Yo Dr. Bronx, give’em the Spanish Harlem welcome and pass da Crown Royale. And no, you can’t keep the purple/gold sac; that’s for DVJ.

Guys
The excitement is back, well at least for these past two nights.
Mr preliminary DVJ imitation style prediction is the following
Nets 113
Knicks 83
Of course its better when DVJ throws down the gauntlet.
Also
Was it me or was Crawford and Nate coming off curls on well set screens in this game?
Also I am impressed with Nates handling of the PG spot. The defense appears to be starting to respect his dribble drive.
I see the Wiz pack it in a bit and Nate responded with that old Mark Jackson style tear drop.
Hope he adds it to his repatoir as he continues to press the defense in.
Balk is a PUMA, seriously, he looks like a Puma a mountain lion with mad hops.
That catch off the alley-oop from Nate was off the hizzy!
I think African tends to believe that once a player has established a tendency that tendency is bound to stay throughout.
For the sake of argument I even thought Zach was a black hole of sorts with his initial tunnel vision in the face of double and triple teams. But these two games have shown a Z-Bo more inclined to play the team game and pass of the double, and in the process to pick and choose his spots when he will drive. Conversely, for all the fat fuck jokes we make here at the Defense, Curry was having a monster season last year, but that trend appears to have reversed itself, and African’s argument that Zach’s presence might have played a part in Curry’s reversal of fortune is so far off. Nor for that matter the initial rough season the KNicks have had adjusting to the incoming Double Double man from Portland.
So while this is just two games, and not a big enough sample set to call the recent passing frenzy a given or trend, it is enough for me to believe that if the players sacrifice or alter their games to maximize the parts, the team will be able to take a step foward from the recent losing they’ve experienced.

The Nets are gunning for us! A Knick win will make it 3 in a row
against them! I think the Knicks have learned ball movement!
Sometimes tonight they over passed but that is an easy correction and
going in the right direction! The Nets have few answers for Curry and Zach
inside! Sean Willams maybe, but that’s about it! We must once again play full court on
Kidd and disrupt his flow….that will be the key to beating the Nets by double figures!
We are too deep to use 2nd game in as many nights as an excuse for a let down!
Lets GO KNICKS!!!!!

The key will be the first five minutes. We’ve got to come out aggressive.

Good to see Balkman out of jail. He must’ve rolled doubles.

Great win fellas! Amazingly enough, first game all year that Eddy-Zach started a game that ended in a +5 firt quarter!
“We are a much better team when we KNOW Marbury won’t be a problem or isn’t coming back. Marbury is the poison on this team.”
Davonnn, let me state that I respect you greatly and I think that you already know that. …needless disclaimers aside, this statement is simply a stretch of the most incredibly wishful proportions. So… the fact that the Knicks go 3-9 without Marbury (including Seattle!) prior to the last two games but that means nothing. Why? because they KNEW Marbury was coming back! Am I to assume that they might have gone 9-3 in those games if Marbury was done for the year back in November?
5 Reasons we won that say absolutely nothing about future success:
1) the other team came in tired after a series of games including back-to-backs
2) Eddy and Zach did not give the game away in the first quarter.
3) Q didn’t shoot 2-9 again
4) Jamal went off. When Jamal goes off, we tend to win. Soak it in because he could go 3 - 15 tomorrow.
5) The Knicks shot 65% from 3-point range… mostly because Jamal went off.
However, two reasons that should translate to more wins:
1) Renaldo has finally received his prison release.
2) Nate freakin’ Robinson!: Are we seeing a mirage or a new developing Nate Robinson in January? Sure, he is shooting an incredible 54% this month (which can’t possibly continuing longterm), BUT what’s up with the assists (8 tonight and 10 last week)! For the first time Nate’s poise of late is making me consider something that just one month ago I thought completely impossible… Nate as a viable point guard possibility! I’m not there yet, but just the possibility is a very exciting proposition
