Rockets get assist from Isiah Thomas, beat Knicks 101-92

January 10, 2008 – 1:13 am

I was watching the game at a downtown pub tonight, and I liked what I saw through three close quarters.  The knicks started off down 0-10 but they rallied back and kept it close. At halftime I was certain this team would win the game.  The knicks came out and moved the ball well despite being hesitant to shoot. The knicks still have big problems defensively, but they played with team focus and pride and I liked their positive effort through three quarters.

It is clear to me that Stephon Marbury will play solid basketball as the starting point guard for the remainder of the season.  his spot is from the top of the key.

It is clear to me that Nate Robinson, when he is playing the way he has over the past few games, is a starter for the knicks and most other teams in the NBA.  his spot is from baseline three point territory.

It is clear to me that David Lee has been working hard to expand his offensive abilities and is becoming a dependable low-post scorer despite still not having an outside j.  he does have some spin moves under the basket and a jump hook now.  he needs to add a pump fake.

but what is also apparent is that isiah gave the game away by acting crazy to start the fourth quarter, jumping out on court and seemingly initiating contact with the refs in a very unprofessional manner.  Thomas was ejected by the refs with 11:19 left in the fourth quarter. The score at that time was 77-74 Rockets.  Assistant coach Herb Williams took over and tried to refocus as their commander clearly disrupted their concentration and momentum in an up until that point close game.

If this is what Isiah Thomas meant when he said just the other night that no other coach in the world will be more passionate, no one will try harder to help the knicks turn it around, I don’t want this help.

Now the NBA refs are often wrong, but you have to pick your battles.  if they made some mistakes tonight, as they often do, you have consider the implications of getting a T, or worse yet getting tossed from the game.  this game was more winnable than almost all of the knicks losses this season.  Isiah should have focused on getting his newfound three-guard and two big man lineup playing in the fourth (nate, stephon, crawford, curry, randolph and one sub named lee).  instead he got chucked, herb came in and played quentin and everybody else and that ball game was a wrap.

this team has been bruised, embarrassed, ridiculed, the laughing stock of the league the past three or four years and yet the assembled talent finally got an important and much needed win yesterday and looked poised for another needed victory tonight. The team psyche is fragile from sustained and extensive landslide-style losing, and a victory tonight would have meant a lot towards them believing they can win as a team in this league and turn it around in ‘08.

this is the one time i would have preferred the other Isiah Thomas, the one who sits idly on the bench and stares out into space as Boston destroys the knicks by 47 on national television while a visiting knicks fan throws his jersey out onto the boston court in disgust.

go ahead and blame Yao Ming, or Scola, or Eddy Curry, or Zach Randolph, or Quentin Richardson, or Jared Jeffries, or Malik Rose, or Herb Williams. blame the fans for booing, blame the MSM, blame blogs, blame the mayor for not building a new MSG fast enough. In my eyes, tonight’s derailment of a loss is on Isiah Thomas.  they were on the right track.

yao will always have curry’s number. i’ve seen them play each other enough to know that by now.  he’s only two years older than curry, and he’s just a hell of a basketball player.  very long, and skilled, wants to win.  yao is a true all-star at center.  last year it was yao and eddy and dwight as the best centers in the league.  I don’t count power forwards like Duncan and Amare so don’t go there.  this year it’s just yao and dwight at the top of the heap in terms of centers.

this ejection BS will probably be followed up with a suspension if Isiah did actually physically contact the ref when he ran out onto the court like he was still playing point guard for the Pistons.  the ref rubbed his arm right after isiah was ordered to leave the court, an indication to me that something happened there.  time will tell what went down.

and once again, we have to wait for redemption next game.  sucks if you ask me.

how in the world are the lakers 23-11, hornets 23-12?

what are the knicks now, 9-25?

  4. Because they got much much much better teams than Knicks. They have teams that cover all the areas needed to be a good team, Knicks dont. They play defense, offense, rebound with passion, Knicks dont. They have franchise players, Knicks dont. And Knicks got Curry, they dont.

  7. I saw this in the post tday………

Count Yao Ming among those who don’t understand why Patrick Ewing isn’t working for the Knicks.

“It’s hard to believe,” Yao said. “But hey, Hakeem (Olajuwon) doesn’t work for the Rockets right now. He taught me some things over the summer. But it’s not like Patrick because Patrick wants to be a coach.”

Yao and Ewing worked closely together for three seasons in Houston. Yao credits Ewing and Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau for helping his develop into one of the NBA’s elite big men.

“Patrick was able to teach me a lot,” Yao says. “He’s been very good for my career.”

Ewing, who is an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic, has also worked for Washington, Houston and NBA TV since retiring as a player. He has expressed a desire to return to the Knicks, but the club has never offered him a coaching position.

When asked if Eddy Curry could benefit from working with Ewing, Yao said: “Look at me. He helped me. Look at Dwight Howard and the all the improvement he’s made.”

Does anyone here have any doubt that the Ultimate Knicks Warrior could teach the Chi-town cream puff a few things ? Zeke is loyal to a fault. Aguire has outlived his usefulness. I hope the new regime (whoever that may be) reaches out to the Knicks of the past for developmental positions. Take your Chicago and Detroit friends and beat it Zeke. This is New York. You don’t know and won’t ever know what its like being from NY. Its shameful that he thinks he is going to smile or BS his way through the season AGAIN. We are smarter than that Zeke, even if Jimmy the idiot isn’t.

  8. Ok, first of all a heart felt thank you for Knicksdefense’s blog
and my brothers in arms who post here who let me know I am not
the only one deeply in love with a bitch(KNICKS) that breaks my heart!
That being said, there were many positives from last nights loss!

    1. Marbury is viable, humbled and playing good ball again.
Steph is not a leader, He will get better when we get one.
We will be fine with him until his contract runs out.

    2. It may of come too late but Zeke did find a way to shut
Yao down, with Lee and Zach doubleing him! That was a
beautiful thing to watch Lee front him and Zach back him!

    3. Q Rich and Curry are worst than team cancers, they are both
full blown AIDES!!!! Curry may go into remission on the bench
and get limited health minutes, but Q has to expire! Yes, expire!

    4. I don’t care how many shots Crawford has to take to warm up
he’s our man, lets give him the green light! The man can straight
out shoot! No more Curry bullshit, enough is enough!

    5. Nate has EARNED the right to be our 6th man, and play more
than anyone else off the bench.

    6. Dave Lee has EARNED the right to start in place of Curry
with Zach and Jeffries. Experiment over, Curry has failed!

    7. Balkman and Jones are no longer Knicks! Their recent DNP’S
have to mean Ron Ron is coming home. Don’t believe me?
I challenge you for a better explanation! Whatever it is,
I say bullshit right now to it! Artest has publicly stated
he still wants to be here and can “FIX” us! YES he will!

    8. We ain’t tanking shit! We will right the ship into a 8th
seed or better as soon as Artest is our Captain!
100-1 odds for anyone that wants action on Artest becoming
a Knick before the trade dead line!

    Not just blogging!!!!!!

  9. John Q

Fuck Curry! You can’t teach desire. Ewing can’t help Curry do shit!
Ewing also was a part of the group that held Zeke back from Dream Team One,
in favor of John Stockton! Stockton couldn’t carry Zeke’s jock back then!
I love Ewing, but I can understand Zeke’s position! What did Ewing do so
great down in Houston with Van Gundy and Yao? Van Gundy got the door hitting
him in the Ass and Houston has never been close to a conference final, even
with 2 super stars in Yao and Tmac!

  12. Peace,

You’re probably right but I still think that Ewing could teach Curry more than Aguire ever could.

  22. Good AM Defenders! I am hopeful and prayerful that all of our Defender Posters and their families are well and in good spirits.

Once again, It looks like I am late to the party and missed a lively but civil debate on the results of last night’s game.
After catching up on all of the posts, three caught my attention and I went back to read them again. The first two by Harlem (#126 & #146), regarding the ECITY and Steph offensively. Let’s start with ECITY. There’s no need to harp on this dudes One Positive Dimension, we will all agree he has the ability to score down low.

But even in a slow-downed, half court game, offensively he is a liability, because he cannot pass out of the post to cutters, so nobody cuts through, everybody stand around the perimeter until he make his move, except for ZBO who will try to work his way into rebounding position, but he is much easier to box out because he is either flowing down from the top or the wing crease; he does not allow any other player to post because again he cannot pass (he can’t feed anybody form the wing or high post), plus he is no threat to shoot the mid-range jumper, or put the ball on the floor and make a move because he does not have a jumper whether he is facing up or any sort of turn around, his hands and handle are suspect so quick moes while facing the basket are non-esxistent.(case in point, Bronx referred to moce Yao made on Him 15-17 feet out ECITY cannot do that), also, Yao can face up and feed a cutter or post-up base on a mis-match, and hit the Jumper if his man tries to help, that is why he generally has a more than average assist totals than other Big Men; Duncan and Garnett are also very proficient passers from anywhere on the floor and both can hti jumpers).

Lastly, He sets weak picks genrally, when he is in the game the transition game iis not as effective. ECITY”S BBALL IQ is as high as Shanita’s, the neighborhood Crack Head on Union Avenue and Homes Street, in Fort Apache….

The other point that Harlem made regarding Stpeh can be aggravating, when the DLEES and ECITY and ZBO play the pick and roll game with Steph, when the pick is set up correctly, and they roll down the middle or the crease, this DUDE is genrally way late delivering the ball or does not deliver it at all because he is still pounding the rock into the ground (JCRAW is no better, and N8 believe it or not, is actually the best on the team when it comes to the pick and roll).

    Great observations Harlem!

Now when you combine Harlem’s analysis along with what Stateman wrote in post #157 regarding ECITY’S s defensive liabilities, his rebounding inefficiencies, Plus poor work habits and no HEART, you got look at these things and ask the questions I facetiously posed to him in my first post yesterday. Does he want tio be the best palyer he can be…Is he a legitmate Center to build a TEAM around? Now this has nothing to do with our Big Men Debate, because I would not necessarily start or build a TEAM around ZBO either…But as Steady has said all along, The CULPRIT SHALL sit, and he has also stated their are a few CULPRITS…ZBO is not the sole reason this TEAM SUCK…

Great play by Play B & B/O & B, and great lively CHATTER on the THREAD Defenders. Last but not least, BLOGZILLA thanks again for the POST REGARDING ISIAH EJECTION LAST NIGHT, although I must tell you, I did not see it that way, but I read and respect your slant on it, and all perspectives should be welcome shared.

    Have great Day DEFENDERS!

    Keep it POPPIN!

  23. Looking back at the tape of last nights game, it was comical as hell
when Zeke got tossed! NO BAH DEE wanted to stand up and take over as Coach!!!!
I’m LMAO now because the look on the knicks asistant coaches were like,
Oh shit??? I don’t want to do this shit!!!! It took Herb 40 seconds to stand up
    after Zeke got tossed!

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:00 am

  24. I’m with Cooley KD. Your interpretation may be right as mentally fragile as the Knicks are, but I for one was glad to finally see IT get his ass off the bench and show some moxie. I’m tired of his players laughing on the bench and him holding his raised eyebrow in his hands while shaking his head while sitting. He finally showed some fire and his players may have responded if Q was capable of playing a good game. Herb is supposed to be able to coach and he has been with this group,. . . how long? I can’t believe that Herb wasn’t paying attention to the game and didn’t have a better idea of what to do than he showed. Herb should have been ready. He was not. That was very disappointing because he is clearly not the one to replace Zeke when he moves out or upstairs.

Hey man, I’m starting to get the sense that Native Chicagoans aren’t wanted in the City by some of my “friends.” Good thing I don’t have any hurtable feelings about being a “city” boy. (LOL) South Siiiyde!!!

  25. Maybe when the smoke clears, we will see Zeke the coach comments about two more
weeks really being Zeke the GM? Lord knows it takes time to finalize a deal!

We are 11 losses back from the Wizards who own 4th seed! With new blood on
this team, we can right this ship! The 2008 draft is seriously overrated!
Not one Impact player like Oden or Durant! Beasley sucks on Defense!
Watch some of his games on Full court press if you have it!

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:30 am

  26. Lives, man…I still love you. *kiss kiss*

I saw the replay of Isiah’s tossing and didn’t think much it.

KnicksD…I have to disagree. I was livid at how Curry was being called(or more accurately, not called). I took solace in the fact that the game was being called evenly. Yao was being beat up too.

I’m not blaming Herb for the loss…I’m just disappointed at the difference between what Isiah was doing in the first three quarters and what Herb did in the fourth. Herb’s been here a long time. He more than anyone should know what to do should Isiah flip his wig and be tossed it.

If you look at Yao on the possession in question…he was camped out in the lane for a good while. Isiah said that he had already mentioned it earlier in the game to the refs and that he warned the refs that he would make a scene. Isiah didn’t argue the tossing although the contact seemed to be created by the refs arm motion.

But still…that didn’t lose the game. Q at the 3 did. Any chemistry that the first 3 quarters conjured was nullified by Q’s…um…inefficacy. Off the top of my head I remember the guy passed up open shots…made bad passes…and set a pick out of bounds for a turnover.

Had it not been for Q and a non existent ZBo in the fourth…I think it would have been a much closer game. Not a guaranteed victory…but the outcome would have been decided in the final minute.

I feel cheated having had to watch Curry and Q struggle in the fourth.

By BARF on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:35 am

  27. Yeah!
    Curry is the problem!
    Not!
Yao is a skilled, long player that gives Curry problems.
That’s not a secret. Yao averages thirty against the Knicks.
Just the same way Shack had Ewing’s number. Shack was younger though, but Ewing wasn’t bad at that point. He just flat out intimidated Ewing.
The coaches should know that and came up with a plan to either deny Yao the ball from jump, or let Yao get his and stay on the other shooters. I’d prefer to concentrate on Yao, since Tracy was out.
If you looked at past games, you wouldn’t be suprised that Yao’s length would neutralize Curry.
I was hoping that Curry could put Yao in foul trouble, but Curry gets no calls that same way Shack didn’t get any earlier in his career.
That was a winable game. In the fourth, there was no need to bring back Curry if there was no plan to go to him.
I still will not trade Curry or Nate.

    Peaceman:
With that proposed Redd line-up, who would play defense?
Would Artest guard all five positions on the court? lol
Did you ever get that Chinese food order from Mak? lol

By African on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:39 am

  28. Peace, if we don’t get a point guard in the lottery, I’d be fine with trading the pick and moving down in the draft.

Zeke has done well in the draft but his worst pick was Channing Frye at #8. I remember that was a popular pick and no one had anything to say about it.

When he picked Balkman #20 and Collins #29, everyone had a tit fit. They turned out well.

    Chandler #21(?) looks promising.

If the draft pick is a no-brainer…then cool. But I keep hearing how this draft isn’t heavy with talent. And if that’s the case and we can’t fill our needs of a shotblocker or PG…then I think we keep it moving and try to trade for need. Lordy knows we have enough youth on the squad.

This “depth” is killing the on-court chemistry. Everyone is a specialist and there are not enough minutes to go around for everyone. We need two-way players.

Artest is one…although at this point I wouldn’t trade for him. I imagine that he’s a shoe-in come offseason for as much as he keeps bringing up “fixing” the Knicks. The only thing I see holding it up is if Isiah Thomas doesn’t want him. Could that be possible?

I think Artest shores up the starting lineup.

When Curry sits, Artest can move over to the PF position and play alongside DLee or ZBo and Isiah can run the three guard lineup he loves. Or Artest can stay at the SF and we can play with 2 PF’s (ZBO and LEE) and a SF/PF (Artest). Yeah…it should be a good fit. At this point, anyone is better at the SF position than Q.

That dude has been completely opposite to what I thought he was going to be. You figure after the back surgery he’d be healthy, running and jumping. He’s been healthy looking. Too healthy looking. He’s running…jumping…and doesn’t look tired out there. He just hasn’t been effective on the offensive end. And lately, probably because of a battered ego, his rebounds have been down.

I’d trade him for a bag of beans now…but at $9 per…I’d say he was our worst contract.

By BARF on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:47 am

  29. I agree with you AF that Curry is just not a good matchup for Yao and that bad matchups are a part of the game.

But then…how come Lee and ZBo did a better job on him?

By BARF on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:49 am

  30. Yeah African,

Mak finally delivered that Chinese food,
but he was smileing so I didn’t eat it! lol

I believe that Artest will lead a “help defense”
effort! I was very impressed with Lee fronting Yao last night!
Also, Curry will ride the pine until he puts forth the defensive
effort that Artest will lead! We will also see if Chandler has some D!
Jeffries will help on the D.

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:55 am

  33. Oh, and the running argument to Artest being signed to NY is: He’d have to sign for the MLE.

    So what?

He could sign a 1 yr deal and re-up at a higher payscale the next year.

The MLE isn’t chump change for one year’s salary. Artest isn’t exactly a high paid athlete. He’d be making about $3mil less but how much did he lose the year of “The Malice at the Palace”? Like $5 mil.

I think he knows how to survive on his salary. It’s not much of a stretch to think he’d sign an MLE for a year, try it out in NY and test the market UNRESTRICTED the next year.

Artest in NY would make this team very WATCHABLE…like a train wreck waiting to happen. Considering the media attention he’ll get…especially if he helps turn the roster around…it could mean a whole lotta CASH MONEY come the following offseason…when the free agent class will be CHOCK FULL OF COMPARABLE TALENT.

    Which means $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

By BARF on Jan 10, 2008 at 12:00 pm

  34. We’re going to win a few games soon. We’re playing harder and the tiniest bit smarter.Last night was winable, but with complete 20/20 hindset, IT should have stayed with his starting lineup at the beginning of the third and prayed instead of using his “energy” second line to early. He had nothing to come back with and he knew it.So he cutely got himself tossed in the old Auerbachian tradition.Problem is he obviously did it on the spur of the moment and Herb was unprepared. He did get the enery burst from his team but it was wasted in the confusion of the next two minutes leaving Herb with a tired confused group.Worse yet, they were the comeback group, ergo there was no comeback. Not good.Good idea, but poor communication and preparation by the coaching staff for emergency situations. But they are playing harder with a smidgen more of defense.Better.LGK.Extra, extra. Lives, Celts go down, cloak of invincibility punctured. What happens now?

By Tman on Jan 10, 2008 at 12:00 pm

  35. Barf:
Lee is more mobile, and he was getting help behind from Zach. Good game plan.
If you noticed, Zeke was playing Curry straight up on Yao. Bad game planning.
Yao’s length, and the ability to shoot the jumper from way up, allows him to take that shot comfortably over anyone in the league without the possibility of it being blocked. Well….except around Nate.lol
I don’t remember Zach or Lee playng him straight up. That’s a mismatch any way you look at it.
Yao is no slouch. He’s the best center in the game. He’s shooting almost sixty percent from the field.

    Peace:
You have me cracking up in the line waiting for my check.
Did you think he pissed in the soup? lol

By African on Jan 10, 2008 at 12:03 pm

  36. Lee and Zach were on Yao one on one too. They were dunked on too.

The difference was on the offensive end. With Lee and Zach, the Knicks don’t plod the court and have to establish Curry. The overall pace of the game was quicker so Yao was kept huffing and puffing. The guards got involved in the offense and Nate was great once again.

I think we are starting to see the beginnings of a new core. Unfortunately, Q is still in the rotation. It says something about his character that he remains a starter. He must really impress Isiah personally if he continues to go with him.

Still, as a productive member of the roster, he stinks.

I’d prefer a young’n at this point of a lost season.

    WTF happened?

By BARF on Jan 10, 2008 at 12:16 pm

  37. Thank you BARF. Someone cares.

I don’t know TMAN. Give me a couple more of those losses and I might regain some dignity and go back to my original position, slapping the CELTS.

Peace. That was funny. Mak shouldn’t have smiled.

I don’t see anybody on the Bucks that we would want besides Redd. We don’t need a point and we don’t need Charlie V. His rebounding is inconsistent. Bring back Charles Oakley.

By Lives In New Jersey, Loves New York on Jan 10, 2008 at 12:29 pm

  38. Can’t disagree with any of that.
Yao is a tough cover for anyone. We probably needed Snax to commit some hard fouls. Intimidation techniques.

We can have, or play different styles. We need both.
My point was that if Curry is in the game, use him to his strengths.
In the fourth, he was in for Zach, but the play was perimeter oriented.
We do have the tools to go uptempo, but get the right players in there.

I also like Tman observations in relation to the start of the third.

  40. I dunno cuz I like the start of the third. We stayed with the Rockets the entire game up until the start of the fourth. And even with Q and Curry in the fourth, JCraw got us up to within striking distance.

You can’t say we blew our load if the same lineup that got us in the position to win didn’t play the fourth.

Lee came back in. Nate came back in. ZBo was back in.

    Just not together.

If that lineup held court for the 2nd and 3rd qtrs…then why in hell would you go away from them in the fourth?

The 1st qtr was atrocious outside of the guards heating up and keeping us in the game via the free throw line and the 3 pt line. The 4th qtr was atrocious becuz Herb went with Curry in crunch time when it was evident that he sucked on D (Peace had Mak delivered Chinese and Yao ate Curry last night, go figure) and offensively Curry was being mauled…plus, he refused to pass out of the double and triple teams.

Its frustrating saying the same shit with every loss. None of this shit is new. Maybe our criticism is topical but I doubt it’s wrong.

I understand why Balkman doesn’t play. Players are starting to dare Q to shoot any jumpshot and he is taking too long to shoot them. He second guesses himself and that hesitation allows the defender to recover. Q’s defeating himself at this point. Balk shoots less…and less accurately.

Chandler is the next in line…but will Isiah jump 2 players in the depth chart to use the rookie?

The point Tman was making, which I agree with, is that the second unit was a good change-up from the starting unit.
    It allowed a different tempo.
Starting that line-up gave them too much court time, so at crunch time, they had nothing.

  44. Defenders! Interesting MSM analysis of the game’s young centers.

Game Time: Lakers 109, Hornets 80

In a battle of second-tier teams with first-tier ambitions, the Lakers simply buried the Hornets. And in the battle of second-tier young centers (behind Yao Ming) eager to vie for runner-up status (along with Dwight Howard), Andrew Bynum simply buried Tyson Chandler.

    Bynum-Chandler matchup
FGM-A FTM-A REBS A ST BS TO PTS
    Bynum 8-10 1-2 9 4 0 3 0 17
    Chandler 4-8 3-4 7 0 0 0 2 11

    Bynum’s edge

His post-up moves were absolutely superior. They included face-ups, drop-steps and right-handed jump-hooks (three of these). Plus, a big-time power-dribble and spin to unleash a successful lefty jump-hook. (While Chandler did sink a righty jump-hook, his only other post-up attempt resulted in an awkward turnaround jumper that clanged off the front rim.)

Bynum’s alert passing included two sensational dimes to a cutting Luke Walton, a kick-out to Derek Fisher who drilled an open jumper, and another sweet assist to Trevor Ariza in the lane. Bynum’s passes were made only after he had reconnoitered the defense and were executed with the aplomb of a veteran.

On one play, Bynum posted and then reposted before dropping a hook out of the sky. Game by game, he’s becoming more comfortable making plays from the low post.

Andrew Bynum blocked three shots and contested many others. (Layne Murdoch / Getty Images)

Bynum is also learning where the open spaces are when his teammates drive into the paint. His length and quickness off the floor make him an easy target for lob passes. He had one of these.

And though Chandler leads the league in offensive rebounds, Bynum beat him to the top to gain possession of an offensive rebound and turned it into a bucket. Bynum did the same to Hilton Armstrong.

In all, Bynum challenged four shots, as well as preventing or intimidating five more. Meanwhile, Chandler was so intent on keeping his body on Bynum that he neglected to go after several highly blockable shots within easy reach. (Chandler challenged no shots and intimidated only one. Indeed, he was nailed to the floor when Kwame Brown flipped up — and made — a jump hook. Like Marcus Camby, Chandler only goes after shots he thinks he can block. )

Time and again, Bynum managed to hold his ground when approaching ball-penetrators on defense. As for Chandler, he was easily lifted by ball-fakes in the shadow of the basket.

Although both young men are primarily finesse players, Bynum showed much more energy than Chandler.

    Chandler’s edge

His screens are more forceful and he holds them longer than Bynum. Two of his scores came on the finishing end of screen/rolls. Chandler also sets solid screens when he’s involved in hand-offs. (Bynum, meanwhile, is too eager to slip his screens.)

Chandler is quicker changing ends, and tallied a dunker after trailing a fast break — with Bynum nowhere in sight.

Chandler is likewise a mite quicker recovering to his man after showing on the far side of high-screens.

    No edge

Both of these guys were too slow in transitioning from offense to defense.

Neither does a diligent job of boxing out.

Prognostication: in his seventh NBA season, Chandler is just about as good as he’s ever going to be. In his third NBA season, Bynum is merely scratching the surface. Give him another three seasons of hard work and he has a decent chance of challenging Yao Ming for supremacy in the middle.

    Keep it POPPIN

  52. DEE-FENDERS,

I’m not sure how you BLAME a game on the Coach, because he was tossed while team TRAILED 77-74 w/ just under a
FULL-QUARTER remainining in the Game. Granted the Assistant were not Prepared and did a POOR job, but BLAMING
the guy who was tossed is a R-E-A-C-H.

Yao-Length is not the only Liability for Curry. Poor Lateral Movement on the Defensive-side is Curry’s Problem
and it GOES back to DESIRE!! If you watch Curry on Offense, he has DECENT(not great) Lateral Movement. On
Defense Curry offers ZILCH. You see guys such as Brad Miller, Kaman, Murphy, Aaron Gray, drive around Curry.
It gets back to DESIRE. Ewing can’t teach DESIRE. Guys like Curry are as someone mentioned a BIG TEASE.
Coaches believe that they will be the one to MAXIMIZE the kids talent, but it never happens. They have great
SKILLS, but ZERO-HEART & WILL. The NBA ROAD is filled w/ guys like Curry.—Benoit Benjamin, Kevin Duckworth,
Chris Washburn, Melvin(Dinner)Turpin, Joe Barry Carroll, Stanley Roberts, etc. Believe me there were
coaches and fans w/ ANALYTICAL EYES, that were convinced these guys would join the ranks of Wilt,Kareem,Russ,
Shaq. I say cut your LOSSES.

Cooley, on the Pick & Roll, which has become the Pick & Pop, a big problem for Steph & the other guards is that
if you give the forward the ball, none can hit the 10-15 ft. shot,(maybe Zach), so I think the guards are holding
the ball to see if the forwards are open closer to the RIM. Just my take, but when Deron Wms gives the ball to Boozer
Boozer can hit the J. Tony Parker gives to Duncan, Duncan can hit the 15 ft-J. Steph gives to DLEE, DLEE
will not take the shot or he can’t hit the shot.

    Artest & Blessings

  55. Did I even consider a trade with Milwaukee when I mock traded Zach?

I don’t think so. For Curry, yes.

I don’t like anyone on the Bucks. I don’t think anyone on the Bucks would change much of whats going on here. I don’t think Redd would address any of the problems we have.

Unless you can move QRich along with ZBo and maybe run…Crawford at the three…maybe. Redd is not going to help our defense. He’ll help with the outside shot, no doubt. He’s sly on defense with his hands but he’s not athletic…so he won’t challenge any of the ball handlers already on the roster.

Still, I would consider a ZBo - Redd trade a success…Balkman or Collins may be included.

I wonder if this rumor has any legs. If ZBo nets any player considered a superstar…the trade was a success.

  57. I can’t believe Zeke is catching flak for showing some life. How many posts have we put up saying we were tired of seeing him sitting lifeless on the bench as the team loses. Listening to his rationale it was logical: He doesn’t do a lot of complaining so when he does speak to an official what he’s saying should be taken seriously. Some coaches complain about every call and non call and don’t get any respect from the officials. Some get more respect from the officials than they deserve. I’m getting off track here but I always thought a coach should get off his azz if something is happening and the refs aren’t reacting to it. He should’ve been doing more of that. Part of his evolution I guess. But coaches come on the floor all the damn time. Riley, Jackson, the guy in Denver, LB, JVG, Skiles. Shi+ most of the coaches in the NBA step on the floor or out of their box. I was just glad to see him sticking up for his players and glad to see them recognize it.

Herb had an audition last night and wasn’t ready for it. I don’t know if Herb was not told he was next in line but for any of them to call themselves coaches and not be prepared is unforgivable. You have to be prepared for when the opportunity presents itself. That is a personal choice. Herb let himself and the team down last night.

  58. DVJ,

@53 I think that’s only a 30 million dollar question at this point in Me-bury’s contract. lol.

    AF,

The deal works straight up. Why would we get rid of Jamal ? 2 20 point scorers for 1 ? That’s a horrible deal !!! Having Redd would allow us to move Craw to his “natural position” of 1st man off the bench. The whole thing is a lateral move at best but it would be a good start if we are planning on getting Artest.

By JohnQ on Jan 10, 2008 at 4:42 pm

  59. Q would have to be a throw in to any potential trade. I do mean any. If someone wants Balkman, they gotta take Q too. Q says the right things but does nothing to back up his shi+. At the summer league he was talking about how great he felt and how he was in great shape. He must’ve meant YMCA shape. Not premiere athlete shape. Don’t get me wrong, Q a couple of years ago and part of last year was battling. He had some games where he carried us. That just ain’t there anymore. And when that happens it’s off to the glue factory. Try reading the side of the cart Old Major. The best thing Q could do for the Knicks is sit down quietly and let his variously injuries heal and work out to get his wind up. Come back when you’re stroking the three with regularity and you’ve got your hops back. Until then you’re taking time from Balkman and Chandler developing and hurting the team.

By Jay Bee on Jan 10, 2008 at 4:46 pm

  60. JohnQ:
Didn’t mean a two for one.
What I meant was that Redd does not really help our immediate need, so look for other players to be involved.
We can’t stockpile guards, if one comes someone would go.
Craw off the bench sounds great, but in his mind he’s a starter.
We should call up our good friend in Chicago to swing a deal.

By African on Jan 10, 2008 at 4:54 pm

  61. AF

Craw was playing three last night when we were most successful. I dont know why it worked against Bonzi and Battier but it did. Would it be a long term fix? Of course not. But he’s long enough to bother people and quick enough to stay in front of them. I thought it was interesting seeing him at three cuz no one at that position on Houston can guard him off the dribble. He also pulled up a few times for quick jumpers and he lost his man in transition because Houston tried switching defensive assignments on him. I don’t know why it worked but it did last night. Would I put him up against a Lebron…or an Outlaw…or Gerald Wallace? Nah. Not at all.

Redd at the SG position would be interesting becuz…it would put Craw on the bench as a spark. I like that idea. It goes back to making our benches one of the more deepest and versatile in the league.

But our big situation would need something back. I don’t like any of Milwaukee’s bigs. None. Villanueva fell off ever since Toronto sent him packing. He was a SF/PF type and once he was injured, you never heard his name again. Aside from him…who else could you say we could use?

    Maybe:

ZBo-Q- Nate for Mo and Redd

    or

    ZBo-QRich for Redd-Mason

I don’t love either deal but with ZBo as the bait, maybe we could hook the Bucks with QRich. He’s not happy here.

He’s not injured. He’s not playing well. What else could it be? He doesn’t like playing in NYC.

    Probably misses Brandy.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank called it “inadvertent contact from the official in signaling the technical foul.”

Thomas was tossed with 11:19 remaining in the Knicks’ 101-92 loss after he came onto the floor to yell at Lewis, claiming Rockets center Yao Ming should have been called for a 3-second violation.

Though Thomas said he didn’t touch the official, they clearly made contact when Lewis was issuing Thomas’ first ejection of the season.

  79. As I usually do– team mediator and all.

I’ll take a split of the difference in the Isiah coaching incident yesterday against the Rockets.

On the one hand I do like that he showed moxie and that he was willing to fight and get out there to support and argue on behalf of his players. I can only hope that his players saw that for what it was, a coach, not the perfect or best coach for this team IMO, put himself on the line for his team and show a little faith in them that they sometimes don’t show in themselves.

To that end the effect may work like the sort of spark that has players recognize the importance of sacrifice selflesness and reciprocity– i.e., I do for you and by implication you do for me or for the greater goal the team and or community.

On the other hand I think on of the defenders, maybe Jazz or JohnQ, noted it best. the timing and contingency arrangements for that display of moxie for the team and the players was not well coordinated.

Thomas failed to set up his assistants with a viable late game approach, should he have ejected- short term lack of forsight. Also Thomas failed to designate and prepare way ahead of time a succesor, for just such an event– long term lack of forsight. Moreover, Herb the senior assistant coach, with all the experience and supposed knowledge of the team and its players, didn’t respond to the situation like a person who either the knew the best set of personnel for the particular occasion or the best way to manage the game at that time consider portion of the game, matchups and team chemistry.

I didn’t think Zach would be a good fit in Milawauke– is that correct.

Here is a trade I considered on a prior thread.

Bucks clear cap space by taking Marbury with nate as the throw in to balance the gaurd situation for both teams, we get Redd and take Williams as a throw in.

The other one would provide partial relief for Redd’s 14 million plus salary, but we’d lose Crawford, Rose who might be better used to land Artest should it come to that, and we would have to take Michael Ruffin just to make the rosters work.

    Are either of them viable?

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 8:19 pm

  82. – Besides the usual Zach-Eddy first quarter pairing which cost the Knicks 10 points, I’m with BARF that it was probably the reenrance of Q that cost the game

    – Yao owns Eddy because he is 7-5. It is one of those matchup things and will never change. Remember how Ewing (no, I am not comparing) always had difficulties with tall guys. Rik Smits used to give him fits on O and D. It was Smits whoc kicked the Knicks asses for 40 minutes while Reggie owned the last 8 and got the Knick killer glory.

    – I am surprised that people aren’t higher on Redd. The lack of a perimeter shooter has been killing the Knicks and the deadliest one in the league might be available. He is the perfect fir for the Knicks to spread the floor. But unlike in Milwaukee, he could get some open shots on the Knicks. Marbury who loves penetrate and kickouts would thrive and space for Curry would open up. Redd is what the doctor ordered. How good is Redd? He is a 45% shooter who guns from the perimeter while Jamal is a 40% shooter but is more of a “slasher”. D is a wash as neither play it too well.

In turn the Bucks sorely need rebounding. Zach and Jamal for Redd and Mason. Do it now! This could be a win-win!

  83. I’m with you MODI!
Hey…this rumor just started! Who is saying it’s not true? I haven’t seen anything
to negate it! There has to be some truth here, as it wasn’t started as a Joke!

    Knicksdefense,

I respect the hell out of you, but I think you over-reacted with BARF!
He was playing…didn’t mean nothing personal. Man, I play all the time,
so I hope you don’t take me serious when I’m kidding! The reason we can kid each other
is this is a BIG family here at Knicksdefense! As Kandiman put it on another blog, this blog has
” the sharpest Basketball minds on the internet.” Lighten up bro, we all got nothing but love for you!
Not just blogging, and hell yeah, kissy, kissy!

  84. Guys we have to buckle down. We’re going to be in the hole for a while.

After looking at our teams’ contracts, I’m at a loss for words.

Zach has 3 more years at $16 M per
    Q has 2 more years at $9 M per
Malik has 1 more at $7
Jeffries (a/k/a “Airball”) has 3 more at $6.5 per

Isiah will not be able to trade anybody. Zach has value, but not at $16. The rest are worthless.

IT needs to play the kids! We would get the most benefit due to their cheap (relative) contracts.
    Lee 1 more at 1.7
    Chandler 3 more at 2
    Nate 2 more at 2.5
    Balk 3 more at 2!

Much better investment to run the kids and let the vets wear suits for the rest of their contract!

How can you not hustle in games if you know you have an overvalued contract and no one will ever pay you that money again?

    Players on last fat contracts:
    Marbury
    Randolph
    Rose
    Jeffries
    Richardson

Let the vets rot on the bench! Play the kids!

pug that interviews WHITE WANA BE RAPPERS for a 3rd rate MAG!
I would believe anyone over this MOMO!

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 8:55 pm

  86. Acquiring Redd makes sense financially, but no sense in terms of the makeup of our team. We need a shooter, but acquiring one for our best forward would hurt.

We need to ride this out like the Celts, and wait for our turn in the draft, plus a Marbury trade.

Redd gets us in the first round, but that’s it. F*ck that. We did that in 1999.

I want a real team to cheer for the next 5 years.

  87. Blogzilla,

I feel you bruh. Flex that muscle. Ain’t nothin wrong with setting ‘em straight.

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:02 pm

  88. HarleminMD,

No way! If we can rid our team of Franchise’s 30 mill, we can get rid of Q!
Rose is a player in certain games. Jeffries is a bench defensive player, and Zach
is a 20-10 guy. Getting rid of Q is a priority, but we can’t tank this season yet!
I believe we have some Major moves coming!

My brother lives in Richmond, VA. He goes to all of VCU’s games, and told me he met Knick’s
scouts at the Home Games this year ….all looking at a non lottery PG Eric Maynor!!!!
He’s having a great year under the radar! My brother is a close friend of Ben Wallace’s kid brother,
as Wallace pointed out the scouts to him! Little Bro plays in a semi pro league in Richmond with Wallace!
It seems Zeke has his eye on another deep unlikely pick! I hope VCU don’t go to the big dance this year,
because Maynor is a tough, tough point guard and the less exposure the better!

    Curry
    Crawford
    Nate

Let the vets give the kids a 2 minute break! They won’t care; they’re FAT CATS!!

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:34 pm

  102. – Harlem, the very first thing that we need to do is break up the Zach-Eddy experiment. It almost doesn’t matter which side of it you are on. It needs to be broken up rather quickly if other players are going to develop. If Zach were able to fetch you someone like Michael Redd, it is a win for the Knicks on so many levels. Add Artest and a nice draft pick this summer and its on! I would only say that any Redd trade would also have to include Jamal to stop any more roster structural flaw drama.

B & B, I wouldn’t see why the Bucks would do either of those trades. They assume that the Bucks are only looking to dump salary. This is Michael freakin’ Redd! the man hasn’t shot an open jumper in three years and is still lights out. I would talk some shit to you B& B if I wasn’t worried that you might go Blogzilla on me! :-)

  105. I still think Curry can do it Peace. Call me crazy. He’s a bright guy; I just think we give him a little more time. We have to; we gave up two 1st rounders for him.

I still think the robbery set him back. He told reporters that he has not returned to the house and it still bothers him. It probably screwed up his offseason workouts.

I think I can wait more offseason. He and Craw are the only ones who have true dominating potential.

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:38 pm

  106. HarlemMD

I get the feeling that Thomas’ pride won’t allow him to fold-em and call it a wrap on the season.

It’s really a shame, While we may technically be alive for the last playoff spot we’d have to go on a crazymad run.

Hit about a 7, 5, and a couple of 3 game playoff runs while splitting the season just to sniff 500.

Hey if it happens I’ll eat humble pie!

But the further we get from it being possible then I’ll throw my vote into the youth movement!

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:39 pm

    LMFAO @ 101!

Well then sell me on why the Bucks would want Z-BO.

Are you thinking Z-Bo @ 4, Yi @ 3, and the Australian dude @ 5 would work as a starting front court?

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:44 pm

  110. Barf,

Just kiddin whicha. I like the way you mix it up in here.

If I was in MSG’s front row every night, I’d make sure my lips weren’t dry! I’d be there with chapstick, faberge and moisturizer! I’d be workin hard for them dancers and front row celebs!! LOL

    Bronx,

Yeah, we need to put Curry in the back of the freezer until he gets freezer burn! Then he’ll be ready for NYC! We gotta work with our investment man!

  111. “A new rap song called “Fire Isiah” is out, sung by two Italian-Americans from Queens, Genovese and Gustapo. It was featured yesterday on The Post’s Knicks blog. It can be found on the Web site http://www.firstcousinsmusic.com.”

    Add to that the following

“The Knicks aren’t winning, but some avid fans are: They’re making a small fortune hawking T-shirts and other items demanding that coach Isiah Thomas be fired.”

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:48 pm

  112. OK Lives. Don’t me to offend in here. I’ll fall back.

B&B, we got dunked on by Yao. That only happens to us.

We’re not going to the playoffs.

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:49 pm

  113. Perhaps handcuff Curry to a treadmill set on perpetual go with a a bucket of KFC and all you can eat within his eyesight but far enough in the distance that his dumb ass will try running after it.

Also we could strap on an electrical shock contraption every time Curry get a craving for the Crispy Creme!

    LOL!

  114. Harlem,

Marty’s lips have their own Zip code!

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:53 pm

  115. “Are you thinking Z-Bo @ 4, Yi @ 3, and the Australian dude @ 5 would work as a starting front court?”

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking. Milwaukee is a weak rebounding team and Bogut, Yi, and Villenueva all have more finesse games vs. strong postups. I think that Zach actually fills in there weakness… throw in Jamal at the two and the fact that the Bucks have both Mason and Simmons at small forward (and sometimes Villenueva) and I think that both teams address roster imbalances with the trade and the Bucks save some money…

By MODI on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:57 pm

  116. Modi,

Getting rid of Zach is going to be costly. His attitude and lack of hustle takes away from his skill. I doubt there will be any takers for a $48 mil contract.

Peace, that’s the beauty of being a NY Knick! It doesn’t matter!

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:58 pm

  117. We are not going to the playoffs??? Come on Harlem!
You quit in a pick up game to 11 and your down by 7??????
If so …you should quit pretending to be tough and then
add CURRY to your line up! You freaken Stay Puff Marshmellow!

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 9:59 pm

  118. B&B, the Daily news has been promoting “fire Isiah” gear every other day. it is ridiculous…

By MODI on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:00 pm

  119. B&B: Yes,they would possibly slide Yi to SF.He has range on his jumpshot.I have League Pass and have seen him hit a couple 3’s so this idea might not be as far fetched as one might think. They still might try to get us to take Charley V. though.

By George M. on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:04 pm

  120. WHEN HAS ZACH EVER BEEN ACCUSED OF LACK OF HUSTLE??????
Harlem go to sleep! It’s Late!

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:04 pm

  121. Harlem, what if we take back Redd AND Bobby Simmons big contract for Zach, Jamal, and Fred Jones.

If Simmons ever gets his 40% 3 point stoke back, he might actually be an asset

By MODI on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:06 pm

  122. LOL! yeah, I’m that guy that quits the game of “21″ when I see I ain’t winning.

Zach sometimes doesn’t defend the deep shots. And he sulks when he doesn’t get the ball.

I never said I was tough! I said I talk shit!! LOL!

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:09 pm

  123. Modi,

Simmons at $10 mil per? That’s a big gamble and I don’t want to take any more bad contracts and flawed players. I think we need a stronger defender than Simmons.

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:11 pm

  124. Hey Modi….

Isn’t Simmons another “Chiguy” from DePaul?

He’d be yet another kid from the southside of Chi….

    Just what we need.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:12 pm

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:23 pm

  126. That’s a good name B&B. He has a nice shot too. But he is a little laid back.

By HarleminMD on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:35 pm

  127. Hey now I recall the time when Marbury would actually pass off to the bigman on the pick and roll.

It was when the fundamental 10 foot jumper shooting dude was with the knicks a few years back.

The name is on the tip of my tongue.

Fuck we need electro therapy on all the 3 and bigs who keep missing these open jumpers- except for Z-Bo he holds his own.

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:37 pm

  128. Yeah but I get the feeling that Dominicans are proud peeps he’ll want to play to impress here.

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:40 pm

  129. @ B&B,….

“It was when the fundamental 10 foot jumper shooting dude was with the knicks a few years back.

The name is on the tip of my tongue.

    Mike Doleac….

Him and Steph had nice chemistry.

Zeke had been accused of trying to dump anyone associated with Layden, and I defended him on it, till he traded him.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:45 pm

  130. Then he trades Kurt, which was another good pick and pop guy (not to mention ferocious rebounder)…

    For Q.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:46 pm

  131. With such a need for pick and pop shooters who could do some work on the boards like Thomas and Doleac- thanks for the info- the way Thomas traded them, when such players are so sorely needed by the Knicks speaks tons of Isiah’s unchecked ego!

By Black and Blue on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:50 pm

  132. Agreeing with the “unchecked ego” portion of the segment…..

Like I always said, Zeke has an ego the size of the state of Texas.

I can understand him wanting to change the culture of the team he inherited which surely needed to be changed, but there were some very serviceable parts when he arrived.

He got rid of some dudes I’m sure he’d love to have back.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:55 pm

  133. Bronxboy,
come on man…. Kurt is a fucking Million years old!!!!!
The shit that Zeke had to work with….he was one of our few desirables
by other teams! We have a REDD and ARTEST Future! Bring back the Geek
“Clyde” to talk about “FORMIDABLE.” Hear that Boston???????? LOL

By Peaceman on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:05 pm

  134. Problem is that Zeke will never admit he was wrong,… and if you take that approach to te extreme he’ll be the type to choke on his mistakes even if they are blowing up right in front of him for all to see–i.e., Q, and either Zach or Curry depending on what side of the debate your on.

Here’s my last shot at a trade for Redd where the theme is cap space reduction for the Bucks, and which assumes that Artest will be here next year signing for the MLE.

We give Jones, Rose, and James, all of Milwaukee’s cap in 2009, we get Redd, Villanueva who comes of our cap ne
