New York Knicks, Knicks, NBA

Knicks@Spurs

January 4, 2008 – 2:18 pm

Gametime is at 8:30pm for your New York Knicks.

Even with the San Antonio crowd being among the best in the NBA in terms of team support, I anticipate Orange and Blue when they pan to that Texas audience tonight, because let’s face it, Knicks fans are the most die hard fans there are, and if we move to Texas or Orlando or Alaska, we’re going to represent and support our team because that’s what we do weather we’re 8-30 or 30-8.  Even when I drove up to that Boston game in October, there were knicks licence plates on the road, and orange and blue jerseys at their arena.  that’s just how we do it, we don’t know any other way.

Knicks forward Malik “the scholar” Rose took Isiah’s recent Knicks championship remarks and ran with them, by stating the knicks have a different mentality about losing then the Spurs.  Obviously he’s got a point but this guy has been trying to lead from the bench and this Knicks team needs a LEADER in the starting five.  Isiah hoped it could be Quentin Richardson and/or Jamal Crawford but they haven’t gotten it done yet either, so keep shuffling the deck Isiah, but please give an opportunity for the younger Knicks to stay on the floor when their number is finally called.

Wilson Chandler was having a good game in the second quarter, even my grandmother could see that and she’s legally blind.

I was just on MODI’s site, the top-notch COSELLOUT, and I made this point:  Isiah may need to shake this Knicks team’s psyche up by trading away a major player.  Benching Zbo and Curry didn’t do much, and we’re not going to have another brawl this season, I think, so maybe the only way to get to these knickerslackers (thanks Lives) is to send one (or more) of them packing.

Crawford usually plays well against Ginobili, so let’s see if he can recover from his hand injury tonight against this infamous 6th man with more rings than JRR Tolkien.  Curry thinks he’s being given the shaft since the Zbo trade so lets see what he can do against an MVP-type like Tim Duncan.  If all Curry can do is score in the paint, take his ass to the hole and get him in foul trouble.  Stephon came back from leave and put up 16 off the bench so lets see what he can do with Mr. Eva Longoria.

Lets do this for 48 minutes tonight!

Lets Go Knicks!

  2. I love your energy Knicksdefense.
It would be just like this team to go and win against the NBA champs.
We have a difficult stretch of games coming up.
There is still hope for this year since we’re only 6 games out of playoff contention.
    I still believe!!
The question is do the players still believe?

  3. if this was intended to piss me off, it did.

I apologize for linking to an article by the grill, but apparently Kiki was making all kinds of effort to get in with the Knicks and Dolan, once again, didn’t reach out to him (sound familiar Patrick Ewing? Jerry Coangelo? Magic Johnson?)

you’d think the grill would have gone to glamour shots to get a different pic, but I guess that’s as good as they could make him look. a face for radio, no doubt.

  4. Kiki Wanted Knicks Job
    January 4, 2008 - 1:54 pm
    New York Daily News -
Right up until he accepted the Nets’ offer, Kiki Vandeweghe, an ex-Knick whose dad also played in New York, was still trying to figure out a way to have a sit-down with the Garden’s CEO and convince him that he could get this team righted.

“The job Kiki really wanted was the Knicks’ job,” said one of Vandeweghe’s friends in the league. “He was really hoping that Dolan would do something, and he had a lot of people talking on his behalf. But they didn’t even give him a whiff.”

  6. the words of john hollinger

    http://www.nysun.com/article/68927?page_no=3

“And of course, there were more delusions of grandeur from team president and coach Isiah Thomas. Even he must have trouble believing the words that escape his mouth these days.

“I believe that one day we will win a championship here,” Thomas said before the game. “And I believe a couple of these guys will be a part of that. And I believe I’ll be a part of that.”

Sure ya do, Zeke. Right after you walk on the moon. It’s easier to believe in the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny than to believe Thomas will be a part of a championship in New York — unless he takes over another franchise and starts making trades with the Knicks.

Instead, here’s what I believe. I believe I’ve never seen a team quit so completely and totally, from players one through 12, as this one has. I believe the 2007–08 Knicks are one of the most underachieving teams in the history of basketball. I believe that the talent disparity on Wednesday night was so overwhelming that the loss to Sacramento marks a new low in Isiah’s destruction of the once-proud Knicks franchise.

And lastly, I believe that the Knicks will keep coming up with “new lows” that are even further down, until the day when Thomas is finally relieved of a job at which he is so abundantly incompetent.”

  8. maybe isiah needs those kids on the bench. if he played them big minutes and it didn’t pan out, all his cards would be shown early in the season and there would be no more excuses. maybe that had something to do with mardy sitting out the whole season, then playing HEAVY minutes in the last month, only to suffer a Knee injury because of all the atrophy from sitting an entire season. if that’s true, it is happening to renaldo, morris and chandler. maybe that had something to do with malik wanting to leave the knicks. that plus the losing.

    How stupid is that?

that’s the worst thing I’ve heard in a while.
and i’ve heard a lot of bad things about this team this season.

By knicksdefense on Jan 4, 2008 at 4:13 pm

  12. Barf: N. Collison and W. Szczezrbiak for Curry and Q would be a better trade for the
Knicks. Wally S. would certainly be an improvement over Q and Collison a better
rebounder, defender than Curry. We would lose some offense in the high post, but
Szczerbiak would make up difference at SF. I doubt that Seattle would want Q. and would feel they are not getting enough for WS.

By Post-up Prince on Jan 4, 2008 at 4:14 pm

  13. Post up..I’m going to pretend you didn’t just write that trade LOL.
    That’s a terrible trade.
Wally sucks and Collison sucks also.

    Yeah I know knicksdefense…
It doesn’t make any sense to me either.
Unless he tried to hit the ref with the headband. If he did it on purpose than I
can understand but there was nothing said about this when it happened.
He did get ejected that game and I wondered why….now I guess we know LOL.

    That sucks for tonight guys!!
Let’s see if African made even a little sense.
    No Z-Bo tonight African…..
If we win..I’m sure we won’t hear the end of it from African.
If we lose..he’ll say “man we were playing the Champs” LOL.
Mr. “I told you so” LOL

    Let’s Go Knicks.

By DaVonn Jefferson on Jan 4, 2008 at 4:24 pm

  14. Yeah DeVonn,

It sucks big time that Zbo won’t be playing tonight. He normally feasts on the Texas teams.

With the prevailing logic, Curry should score big tonite. He has no one to share the post with.

Let’s see if the increased touches makes him a better defender and rebounder.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 4, 2008 at 5:22 pm

  15. From Marc Stein, ESPN
    Coach of the First Trimester

    Nate McMillan, Trail Blazers

Chances are it won’t be this easy to settle on a COY four months from now. But a COT? One trimester in, it’s C-A-K-E for us.

The Blazers traded Zach Randolph on draft night, saw Greg Oden in uniform for exactly two summer-league games before microfracture knee surgery canceled his entire rookie season and even lost LaMarcus Aldridge for five games last month. So what happens?

With the youngest roster in the league — and the third-youngest in history with an average opening night age of 24 years and 26 days — Portland followed up a 1-9 stretch by reeling off those 13 consecutive victories. The same Blazers who had posted a losing record in 18 consecutive months.

A practice-floor fight involving Joel Przybilla and Martell Webster on Dec. 1 is widely cited as the spark for the streak no one saw coming. But Roy also conceded recently that the leadership this team of babes gets from its coach — as well as McMillan’s slightly more relaxed demeanor in December — is another major factor.

We need a practice fight!Badly.Yesterday’s game vs, da Bulls revealed the Blazers as a bunch of jump shooters with virtually no low post presence. How do they do it?They do share the ball on offense, get good looks and dig in on defense. That’s interesting because while coach MacMillan was a very good defensive player in his Seattle days he won no “glitter”.He also had no more input than any other coach on who was drafted. That is probably a good thing.Perhaps being a player-coach makes you play harder. But the dual job of President-coach seems to be a classic example of conflict.Justifying contracts and winning games doesn’t seem the way to go.IT is in an untenable position, placed there by his bud, Jimmy D.Do the Blazers have more talent than the Knicks?Match up the first eight and you have to give the Knicks the nod by a lot, with the exception of Roy.Even there, a healthy Steph matches up nicely.A 1-9 start sounds like us and then there is a 13 game winning streak.Frye plays no D, Zack, at least, plays a little.Oden is out for the year,Curry plays like last year was as good as it’s gonna get. Both are worthless right now? Both still have great potential, but potential doesn’t play the game today. What’s the big difference between these teams? One plays defense while they shoot jumpers, the other doesn’t.We need to play better defense.Oh, a practice fight might help too!It would at least show that somebody cares. That is besides,us.San Antonio lost last night. That means Duncan will be pissed. With all due respect, later for him, the Spurs and the stagecoach they all rode in on.Yippee-ki-yay!Let’s play defense!LGK

  16. DaVonn:
    You’re funny man.
Getting rid of cancer doesn’t make you healthy the very next day.
Get rid of him for a month with a new coach and a defensive big would do it.
    I maintain. Team chemistry.

  17. DVJ,
Re #8: You should not be surprised.

    Hey Dougherty,
We’re often reminded here that N.B.A. = Nothing But Actors. The flu-like symptoms should be just the right remedy/cause to get those 2 a DNP/CD. Playing the great Lil’ General (4 star) role, IT is making a statement before Stu squawks about the headband incident. Even with the glove script, Crawford was JCrawful last night Jacking up ill-advised shots. The team is playing rudderless and uninspired me-ball. IT/Zeke/Monty must know something that we fans do not know–that’s why he collects all those Dolan coins.

    Starburyfan,
That really is cheezy for the MSM to put out a man’s business like that just to make their point. It is tasteless, crass and unprofessional (definitely a violation of the Coaches’ Creed as I know it) to go openly after a guy’s job. Did anyone run at Kiki when he was making those bonehead moves in Denver? Did JimmyD tell anyone he was looking for a job? If I recall correctly, Magic was offered the NYK job and he regifted it to his DL bruh IT. So why does this Magic to NY farce get ink again? The DN is going way out of line. For shame!

  19. The Knicks are fraustrating to watch. Going by whats happening now—the Knicks last season was a better team then this year. Which is strange people this team looks so much better on paper then last season.

This team is regressing. Of course you dont need me to tell you guys that, we all have eyes.

I won’t be surprise that the Knicks beat the Spurs tonight then subsequently lose the next 8 games. Yes, it has been that type of season!

  21. Rose in starting line-up. Rose knows the Spurs. He should go out to dinner with them then. not start. When will the DDD happen? I got at teh 8 minute mark in the first quarter. Is Q in the starting line-up? Has Monty awakened?

By Lives In New Jersey, Loves New York on Jan 4, 2008 at 8:04 pm

  22. Wow, I missed all the fun.

I think Curry is the closest thing to a go-to player that we have (along with Marbury). 60% FG for a career, scores easily on Howard. Something aint right this year. Maybe that robbery in his home shook him. I know I’d rather die than be unable to fight for my wife and family. Who knows, but he’s not himself.

If your PF does not defend deep shots, you’re in trouble. Lee has trouble with this as well as Zach.

I thought double-post or high-low would allow us to forget about the defensive deficiency. A conventional lineup (a real SF) is what we need.

As bad as we are and as good as the Celtics are, their fans see a spot for Balkman.

    Free Balkman!!

By HarleminMD on Jan 4, 2008 at 8:34 pm

  23. Those of you who want Curry to be Oden, do you remember a guy named Ewing? Ok, Curry is worse than that, but we all know that Ewing needed Oakley to do the grunt work for the team so he could flourish.

Just a thought. Let’s hope Curry improves. Still time.

By HarleminMD on Jan 4, 2008 at 8:41 pm

  24. Harlem,

Oak enhanced Ewing’s game, he didn’t define it.

Ew was a dominant force in the league BEFORE Oak’s arrival.

Like you said, there’s still time…but he’s working on folks’ patience.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 4, 2008 at 8:53 pm

  25. If someone’s already said this before, my apologies, just consider this a cosign, but I think i’ve finally put my finger on the bottom line re Curry. Basically, it rests on answering weather or not you want to develop a championship team or not.

If you want a chips-worthy team you CANNOT have a giant stinking hole in your defence. The first job of a center is to protect the bucket and hoover up misses.

The center plays right under the hoop, where every shot must eventually aim.Duh.

    Offense is a bonus.

So. If you want to build a team that can challenge the also-rans and give the elite teams a little trouble, keep Curry and keep him fed and make sure you build a team around him that will cover his magnificent sieveness.

If you want to build a team to win the ring, you’re going to have to rid yourselves of this guy sooner or later. It’s mandatory.

    ~ fin.

By Charles Follymacher on Jan 4, 2008 at 9:07 pm

  26. Ewing played the latter part of his career on bad knees, became one-dimensional (occassional defense), hustled, got rebounds, but could not guard his man. Needed Oak to do guard.

    We’re competing.

By HarleminMD on Jan 4, 2008 at 10:57 pm

  44. Chemistry is definitely an issue on this team. I always thought so, but never thought it would be THIS much of an issue.

Funny thing is, this team is still reeling from “Next town Brown’s” wishes….example:

The acquisition of Zbo was really addition by subtraction on the part of Zeke. He so desperately wanted to dump Stevie Francis’ contract and soft Frye, that he made the deal for Zach and Co.

But if Zeke wasn’t “pressured” by Brown to make that move, we still have Ariza (who’s gonna be something to be reckoned with in LA) the slasher/defender who’s presence makes Zeke not have to deal with Q’s deficiencies.

Remember how he used to fill the lanes? Picture him with Nate and Lee/Balkman?

Then we still have Frye, who is a great complimentary player, and the perimeter scorer we so desperately need.

They say that each generation you pay for the sins of the previous generation.

    We’re paying dearly.

By bronxboy in Md on Jan 4, 2008 at 11:15 pm

  45. Just rolled in Defenders! It looks like another L, but I hear there were some bright spots, and ECITY played like a Center this evening…Good for him. Now what! Let’s hope that we can build off this effort.

Looking at the stats, it looks like they competed from the tip until the end. That’s different and positive too. Let’s see where this leads US!

I want to give a THREAD shout out to the MIA’S like St. George, Vic C, Boomann, MINNY, and any other Defender we’ve not heard from in a minute. Your contribution is missed! Hang in there Defenders!

    Keep it POPPIN!

By cooleyhigh on Jan 4, 2008 at 11:19 pm

  46. The debate was settled on the floor tonight. Zach for Ben Wallace. This is a different Knicks team when Curry plays with freedom and authority in the post. Who knows, with Randolph gone, and with a real coach, Curry might start losing some weight. It may seem hard to imagine, but if that man could run the floor, this would be a good team.

By Mike on Jan 4, 2008 at 11:47 pm

  47. Took Lives’ advice and saw The Great Debaters. It was a great film. A must see.

Therefore, I missed the game. Thanks for the commentary. Most useful.

Anti - I miss Fred Rogers too. He was a good neighbor. Check out Johnny Costa’s cd. Mr. Rogers’ music dir. for years.

  48. Whaddup defenders.

    Saw the game.

Proud to see the team compete.

Although it was a loss, the team hung in there and didn’t do a tank job.

And against the defending champs moreover.

But like I said before… the only think worse than no heart is being half hearted.

Lets see if the Knicks come out with the same intensity against Houston.

I believe if they would play the way they did tonight ALL THE TIME, then the Knicks would be a considerable force in the eastern conference and might be competing for a 6th spot in this years playoff pool.

  49. Too bad I missed this one live, I was at the gym making my basketball fantasies reality, took much heat about the Knicks from the guys but I stood strong for the blue and orange (won all 4 for my games too). I recorded the game and am checking it out now. Curry is such a tease, I agree with bronxboy that his value will rise with a few more of these showings. Ben Wallace is tempting though but I say once a slacker (Curry) always a slacker. Can’t teach heart…..

By Marzak on Jan 5, 2008 at 12:46 am

  50. Nothing like running a string Marzak. DO that.

Mike, I knew someone was going to scream that one came settled that wonderful debate, but I didn’t expect it to be you. THe only thing I learned from that game is that the Knicks are acting like chumps, babies and liars, which is what some of us knew before. That whole game was about effort. They tried. How in the world does Zach stop Eddie from getting rebounds and moving his feet on “D”? Eddie got a double, double. Was it because Rose was starting and told them not to let him get embarassed in his town? When ws the last time you saw Knick guards follow a penetrator all the way through the lane all the time? Was it because they just don’t want to play with Zach? Was Zach around for all those debacles? Is Curry capabale of the same effort two nights in a row?

I think the only thing that is confirmed is that the Knicks have been acting like chumps most of the season. It confirms what Gus and others have been saying, they have not shown Zeke any gratitude for making them rich and letting them do a job they love. And he still stubbornly shows faith in them.

Give me a run with this lineup, not one game, and I might agree with you.

  52. This is like something i was mentioning earlier about the Knicks last season compared to this one(Z-BO may be the problem):

    From the hated NY Post:

It felt like a winner’s locker room, filled with loud voices and smiles and giggles. After weeks of being in a sour mood, Curry was ecstatic afterward and couldn’t help stating the obvious: right now the Knicks look better without the former Blazer.

“Being aggressive and being the focal point of what was going on, they were looking for me,” Curry said. “We had the team from last year out there. We’re definitely used to playing that way because we played that way the whole season. Zach is a complement to this team. We got to find a way to be the same way with him there.”

Potent-ial. the dream deferred.Curry played like a juicy lollipop. That’s exactly what gets your teeth in trouble. He kicked Mr. Duncan’s butt!Of course it helped that the Spurs had the temerity to single cover Eddie for most of the game. The biggest problem with Eddie is he has no idea of how good he can really be.He actually believes he is a decent baller right now.Truth is he is a one dimensional, way out of shape kid. When he wakes up and hits the weight room and drops twenty five and muscle s up, he will be quicker stronger and probably a lot meaner.Smarter goes without saying because he’ll have done what he needs to.He played well, which makes you ask, as Lives does, where was this effort before, and will it be there tomorrow? That said it was a pretty good game defensively and we were right there. If we had defended the three point line a little better the game was ours. What is really saddening is that these Knicks are, for the most part, some very nice people.”Inside the Knicks” was a very touching puff piece. You would wish guys with good hearts more success. If they play defense with the same heart they showed for the kids they would be okay.Let’s hope for the best.On another note, Phoenix was getting booed by their home crowd because they were down twenty to Seattle the other night,Phoenix! Can you believe that!Of course they came back, but how can you boo the Suns, and co?You just have to love the game because most fans would root for the lions if the christians made it out alive. To boring!Good game last night.LGK

  55. As i said before, you get 1 good game in 5 with Curry, and when that happens everybody sees what he could be and we all start dreaming that he can be that player, but he just doesnt have the mindset to be that player. As said before, hit the gym hard, lift weights and drop the fat of his body, then he could be something, but until that day, we will have 1 in 5.

  56. Lives and defenders,

Today @ 2:00 Georgetown plays Rutgers on MSG!
Rutgers is one of my sleeper teams! Watch freshman point Guard Corey Chandler
and SF J.R. Inman both talented young players! Also watch Rutgers shot blocking
and rebounding BEAST Ndiaye from Senegal, this guy tries to hurt you when he blocks
your shot! Mt Vernon’s own Mike Coburn is a guard on that team! They should give Georgetown
a respectable challenge, as we know how good the Hoya’s are!

Today is a great day for Hoop junkies! Tonight I will be going back and forth from the Knicks
Game to the Celtic/Detroit game! Basketball Heaven today!

  58. Checkin’ out the highlights of the Magic/Rockets game last night..

The highlights are centered around the centers…..Yao and Howard.

The irony is Ewing tutored both of them.

Ew has extended the olive branch to the Knick organization, Zeke in particular.

Why he isn’t on the staff to give Curry the benefit his experience and expertise is beyond my comprehension.

He would make Curry a player…a multi-faceted player….or die tryin’.

  59. Good AM Defenders!

I want to wish a Happy Sabbath to those Defenders that are gathering up their loins and headed out on their journey to the Temple of Their Familiar. God bless and please offer up a Prayer for ALL Defenders and their Families.

LIVES and TMAN, great posts Defenders. You certainly have to ask the question why this TEAM has not committed to giving that type of effort in every game. I do support African’s proposition (The Debaters) that TEAM Chemistry is critical, but so is EFFORT. And, for the sake of argument, based on the report of the locker room via a NYMSM that will remain nameless, if ZBO is the culprit in terms of the mix, it surely does not explain away the lack of EFFORT and HEART OUR BELOVED KNICKS have not exhibited consistently throughout the early portion of this season. Last season it was injuries; this season it was Marbury, then it was the MSM, then it was the Garden Fans, now it is ZBO, and next week it will be the Naked Cowboy in Times Square. Each player and every coach has to look at themselves in the mirror and ask, “Have I done ALL THAT I CAN DO to represent the Orange and Blue on the hardwood wherever it might be, and execute the game plans and produce winning BBALL for the The Premier Franchise we represent.” Every tub has to stand on its own bottom. The time for excuses is over. NOW WHAT!

Peaceman, is Rutger’s TEAM really a sleeper in the Big East mix? If so, my boys better be on their Best behavior and not take this TEAM for granted then. I have not watched Rutgers at all this season, but thanks for the intel, I’ll call JTIII right now and give him some Defender scoop, and he should take my call if he knows what’s good…lol lol GTOWN should prevail!

Speaking of GTWON, MODI and Harlem, are you Defenders still in play for the GTWON vs. UCONN Game a week from today? BRONX, informed me he could not make it, so I need to know your status for next week so we can arrange to meet. Holla atcha Boy! You know how we roll Force MD’S!

Lastly, African I was delighted to read it is not about the Beef; and Veggies are the Flava of the day and good for the constitution too. But, I was a little thrown off by your QUALIFIER regarding your opinions and observations. Well, keenly observe this, words like Fuckry and Bullshyt are certainly not terms one would associate with being respectful of anothers observations and opinions. How can YOU require what you frequently do not provide. If my memory serves me well, there is no poster on this THREAD more dismissive of others opinions and observations than you. I’m not Beefing, I’m just keeping it REAL. Because I know for myself, I AM A FLAWED PIECE OF WORK, and constantly falling short of the mark. I just want to make sure we’re being DEFENDERS and not PRETENDERS…FTR, ALL IS GOOD, and I still got MAD respect and admiration for our Defender Warrior… Peace be unto thee!

Speaking of FLAWED PIECE OF WORK, it is time to enter my Secret Closet to commune with the I am that I am, and asked for some mercy and forgiveness, and also offer up some hearty thanksgiving, for HE HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME AND MINE. Here’s a morning Prayer straight from my HEART and I learned at the feet of my elders when I was still a wayward little boy (I’ms till wayward adult, just less frequent…lol). This is my Family’s version of a Jabez Prayer!

TO ALL IN THE DEFENDER FAMILY (Especially BLOGZILLA the Master Tailor that keeps this THREAD ALIVE)and the Defenders MIA. We miss YA!

“All mighty Spirit, we enter our daily sanctuaries to commune with thee; be thou our strength, our hope, our guides; give purpose to our work, meaning to our struggle and directon to our striving; cause US to understand that only through human betterment, true fellowship, and deeds of kindness can we feel thy presence; may this our daily worship, bring peace to our hearts and strengthen our desire to live in peace with all of our fellowman. Amen! Selah! Agape!

    Have a great day Defenders!

    Keep it POPPIN!

  60. Another Ndiaye? There’s been like two or three playing on college teams over the years. Maybe the name Ndiaye in Senegal is like Smith or Williams here.

Mamadou Ndiaye and Ndiaye Ndiaye (not sure of the spellings.)

By Jay Bee on Jan 5, 2008 at 10:25 am

  61. Yeah Jay Bee,

Another N’Diaye, his first name is Hamady, he’s a sophmore, 6′11 beast!
Not much of an offensive game, but he should shut Hibbert down!
This Rutger team is young and likes to run, so it should be an exciting game,
I’m not saying they will beat the Hoya’s but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did!
There a dangerous YOUNG team! J.R. Inman may be a Lottery pick!!!!!!!!

Hella shooter/scorer…clutch as all get out!

    Very underrated defender…

Plus he’s a great dude in your locker room.

Again, I’m sure most of you all know how I feel about my man Craw…but that’s what it would take to get Redd, I’m all for it.

He’s the superstar w/o the superstar baggage.

Unknown if Big Macs are waiting for him if the Knicks win.

    By Anti-NYSN on Jan 5, 2008 at 8:45 pm

  81. I’m glad that Zeke didn’t “cave” in to the pressure, and that Zach still in the starting lineup..

    The solution is simple.

As myself and someone stated earlier in the season, put Zach on the high post, and clear the entire low post for Curry.

Make Zach make plays and perimeter shots, which he’s highly capable of doing. His game is much more diverse than Curry’s.

Yank his ass out with the quickness if he starts holding the ball.

If Curry wants the entire low block, let him have it, providing he works hard defensively and on the boards.

If he “Lazy Eddy”, yank HIS ass out and move Zach to the post.

    N8 22 points 8-11 shooting, 4-5 from 3, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover

Lee - Yao has blocked like 10 of his shots. (exaggeration but not by much)

By Jay Bee on Jan 5, 2008 at 10:32 pm

  117. Quarter 1 2 3 4 T
    Knicks 13 29 27 14 83
    Rockets 27 28 24 21 100

Mini run by Rockets pushes it back up to a 17 point lead. A little less than 4 mins. to go. Isiah finally calls timeout. Rockets have forgotten about Yao and are jacking up shots. They’re making them, but that’s what you want them to do. Yao was scoring at will.

By Jay Bee on Jan 5, 2008 at 10:42 pm

By Jay Bee on Jan 5, 2008 at 10:56 pm

  129. Yao also had 5 turnovers most of those in the second half when the Knicks decided to play defense on him.

By Jay Bee on Jan 5, 2008 at 10:56 pm

PG to back up Steph.Delonte West for PG would be good.Artest or M.Pietrus would be good at SF.For the F/C shotblocker maybe Johan Petro from Seattle.Any thoughts Defenders????????????

  133. Earl Watson, Luke Ridnour, Kirk Hinrich, Jameer Nelson, Chris Duhon, or Brevin Knight. Long list of talented PGs who have fallen out of favor. How about trading for Brad Miller, a guy who makes the shooters better instead of worse, and encouraged passing?

  135. Notes:

    * saw the portland-utah game last night. they don’t have an easy schedule coming up and we’re not even quite halfway thru the season, but i’m not stretching things much in saying these guys are for real. not talkin deep-into-the-playoffs-real yet, but this group of young guns is a growing force in the west. not lookin for beef with you, af, not tryin to start something. you think it’s all due to them trading off zbo (a view you have in common with bill walton — which should worry you right there ;-) ), even tho his replacement (aldridge) takes almost as many shots, scores the same, but has fewer assists, while i think there’s a lot more going on. it’ll be interesting to see how twin towers bit develops as oden comes online next season.

    * i repeat, if you want to build a championship team, you can’t afford to have any big softboiled eggs on your team. you can have guys who aren’t tremendously talented, who only have one or two gifts, but they all must give you hard, consistent effort play in, play out. A GM/coach needs to be able to rely on consistent effort b/c that is what produces consistent results. Eddy Munster can at times be a very good player. But what separates the good from the great, over and above raw talent, is (consistent) effort. you can’t have a guy taking plays, quarters, whole games off when things aren’t going his way. you need a team of hardboiled eggs. Eddy = not a good egg. his value is what it is.

    * breaking a promise here, but omg, dnice had a pretty shit game last time out in dleague. for the first time, he’s given me cause for concern. is he a streak shooter? i’ll give him a couple more games and make a snap judgement based on 10 games in dleague.

    enjoy your sunday, y’all :)

  136. p.s. things i learned in Obvious Camp (first of a series):

there’s “soft” coaches and “hard” coaches. hard coaches have the ability to ‘coach up’ a young team and harden them (if they don’t crack). but if they don’t know how/when to back off, give them some space to be grown-ass men, they eventually ‘lose’ the team.

then you bring in a “soft” coach who emphasizes leniency, who gets the team to “play loose.” the risk is cultivating a pervasive lackadaisical attitude. this is the kind of coach to bring in for a mostly vet team of hardboiled eggs who’ve seen and done it all before, who are hardboiled. see blue jays championship teams. see doc rivers.

guys like popovich and jackson are basically hard coaches who will test you til you harden (or ship you out if you’re not) and pick their spots if you’re a grizzled vet (you don’t see pop buggin bigshotbob too much do ya ;-) )

By Charles Follymacher on Jan 6, 2008 at 9:45 am

  137. p.p.s. zeke was a hardboiled egg player, a soft coach (at least on vets who should/need to be tougher-minded)

    Re: post #120

    Immediate needs are:

    A defensive, pass-first pg to spell/replace Steph.

The back-up pg in Seattle comes to mind. Can’t remember his name.

    Earl Watson….

  140. Guys, it’s time to make some moves! Now! Not in Feb, @ the trade deadline!
We plain out can get it done with this group! We don’t need to blow up the team,
but some new blood like Redd and Artest is now a must! Whoever we have to move,
so be it! Even our first rounder, protected though from 1-8.
I am as die hard as they come but even with the faith of a saint, this team isn’t going
anywhere no matter who is the Coach! A few changes of uniform must happen!
    And it will happen…..soon!

By Peaceman on Jan 6, 2008 at 10:58 am

  141. Um I meant can’t get it done!

  142. Good PM Defenders!

    Somethings are worth repeating:

“I want to wish a Happy Sabbath to those Defenders that are gathering up their loins and headed out on their journey to the Temple of Their Familiar. God bless and please offer up a Prayer for ALL Defenders and their Families.”

    Regarding last night’s game, The effort level was fairly decent, but here are some illuminating Stats; ZBO/ECITY combined for FG-13 of 35 (off shooting night); FT-8-12;
    RBDS-28; AST-2 (problematic); Total Points-34; now there are many who believe these two can’t play together, I don’t necessarily agree…You can run an offense that exploits both of their talents make it work (That’s called COACHING); the three guard offense was the problem. We got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FROM THE SF(JJeff/QRich combined for FG-2 of 5; FT-0;
RBDS-1; AST-2; Total Points-4(amazingly, all by JJEFF. PLEASE FREE CHANDLER, PRETTY PLEASE); Coaching should have PLAYED CHANDLER, because with his athleticism, Battier would have switch to guard him, verses JCRAW (Shut him down, with great ball denial, because JCRAW shot 50% from the field, but zippo from the line, which means nothing to the hoop).Plus, I don’t think Hayes could; Also, Guard play defensely was atrocious and no need to keep beating the drum about ECITY or ZBO on D; and the way N8 was rolling he should have played until he dropped, because he was ON LIKE HOT BUTTER POPCORN, despite some lapses on the D end. We did not dictate the Match-Ups, and we should have with TMAC on the shelve. Now these observations aren’t Gospel, but these are just my thoughts based on what I saw. I’m always interested in hearing the views of other DEFENDERS…

DLT, WELCOME, and may the THE FORCE be with you. I live In Fort Washington, MD, so BRONX and I are not far from each other, and you are rolling and strolling in the COUNTY SEAT, swinging with all of the Smooth African-American Politicos…That’s Cool! FYI, The Miracle on 7th Street is a go on the 18th if the MD’S are Down. Unfortunately, I will be MIA, because I’ll be returning from Tampa and I don’t land until the game is over, but I will make SURE 4 tickets will be left in HALREM’S name because it is HIS BIRTHDAY, and those tickets will be my B-DAY gift to him. SO FORCE MD’S Holla atcha BOY, please let me know who is in play for GTOWN vs UCONN (12th, next Satruday) and KNICKS vs Wizards (18th, the following Friday). By the way DLT, if you can make the 12th, I’ve got a ticket for you too.

Defenders, I’ve GOT my GMEN Uni on, cleared out the Hacienda, got the Patron by my side, and I might even have to PASS THE DUTHCIE TO THE LEFT HAND SIDE if the GMEN act up…lol lol
Like I’ve said before, if it’s got an NY on the Jersey, I’m rooting for them (except for anything that ever played in Shea Stadium, especially the Ole regime of the Mets, even though there were some players I truly admired like Seaver, Ryan, Tug, and Jones and Agee, and Clendennon; I loved the Snell, Boozer, Sauer, Namath, Sample, Lemons, and Maynard version of the Jets too). One day I will expound on my animous for those NYC PRETENDERS…

I would be derelict and negligent if I did not give a shout out to the Master Tailor of this THREAD BLOBGZILLA/KNICKDEFENSE/STARBURYFAN; Master Tailor, thank you for allowing me entry to the BEST NEW YORK KNICK THREAD IN ALL THE LAND. YOU ROCK BLOGZILLA, AND YOU ARE TRULY ONE OF THE ULTIMATE KNICKS FANS! GOD BLESS YOU and YOURS!

Have a peaceful and joyful Sunday Defenders’s, and ALL the BEST to you and your families!

    Keep the FAITH DEFENDERS!

  143. Follymach

    I’ll co-sign on your observations #s 134-36.

    Cooleyhigh (aka TDJakes)

I also agree with your criticism of the lack of substitutions at the SF spot. Thomas’ lack of strategic substitutions where a matchup would dictate such a move frustrates me to no end.

Is it me or does he just trust his underperforming vets way too much– Follymach’s theory of the soft boiled coach but in our case towards vets whose play doesn’t merit it.

This and his atrocious substitutions are very much part of the problems with the New York Knicks.

By Black and Blue on Jan 6, 2008 at 1:37 pm

  144. Yes I admit this trade is sort of whishful thinking.

But what if we through in a lottery protected 1rst rounder or a 1rst rounder in another years draft, would it help?

I figure the trade will give the Bucks cap relief in 2009, if that is what there looking for.

By Black and Blue on Jan 6, 2008 at 1:45 pm

  145. This one is probrably more realistic.

They get relief in 2009 for half of Red’s salary, and they get a scorer to replace him at half his cost in the interim.

By Black and Blue on Jan 6, 2008 at 1:49 pm

  146. Has it really come to this?

During the Knicks back to back road losses to the Spurs and Rockets, two incidents occurred after and during the coarse of both games that appears to be indicative of the lack of respect teams now have for the the New York Knicks.

After the close loss to the Spurs a Spur player made a sarcastic reference to the Isiah Thomas Sexual Harrasment Suite.

“The Knicks have been the butt of jokes across the nation for their basketball the past two months, but the club wasn’t thrilled Spurs forward Matt Bonner crossed the line with a tasteless joke after the Spurs’ win Friday night. Referring to Thomas’ sexual-harassment suit, Bonner said to the San Antonio Express, “I felt some pinching - it made me uncomfortable.” A Knicks spokesman declined comment on Bonner’s joke.”

The following night during the Knicks 12 point loss to the Rockets, a Rockets staff member wore Knicks attire in a staged prank which appeared to be a direct slight at both the Knicks organization and at the teams Point Gaurd Stephon Marbury.

“The Rockets’ entertainment staff mocked the Knicks, specifically Stephon Marbury, in a stunt during a second-quarter timeout. A Rockets staffer posed as a Knicks fan wearing a blue Marbury jersey and Statue of Liberty crown. The fake Marbury fan was given a torch to hold up with the basketball in its cradle, so the Rockets’ mascot “Clutch The Bear” could take the ball and dunk it.

After the fake Marbury fan kept dropping the ball, “Clutch” ripped the torch away, blindfolded him and replaced the torch with an “Idiot” sign. The fake Marbury fan stood for 30 seconds holding the “Idiot” sign aloft even as the real Marbury came on to the court, standing a few feet from him, waiting for play to resume as the fans erupted in laughter at the scene. Marbury brushed it off, wearing a smirk.”

Quite Honestly if the Knicks as a team do not respond to these slights by coming out hard against these teams and perhaps pulling off some upsets then I don’t know what will motivate this team.

  147. DEFENDERS

New York Giants 14-Tampa Bay-7! More on this game later in the THREAD, to express some commparables btw Giants and Knicks.

O & B/B & B, the Intel is comensurate to some PEEPS INTO THE CULTURE of the make up of OUR BELOVED KNICKS. A few Defenders have pointed out that many on this current roster are from Chi-Town or Illinois (at 10 Midwesterners, including most of the coaching, a three from the left coast (JCRAW & N8 from that beautiful city from the Pacific Northwest); a couple Philly Boys, and only TWO HOMIES Steph and Renaldo. Most of these KATS don’t really REP NYC, nor reflect the psyche or mental toughness or ENERGY of the people that move and groove to a WHOLE DIFFERENT RHYTHM AND BEAT; and trust me, if there were more NYC TYPE or AREA BBALLERS BOYS on this TEAM, the next few opponents would taste nothing but SALTY NUTS and NYC GRIT A TASTE OF NYC PAIN.

Some HOMIES would REP THEIR HOOD and HOLD THEIR HOOD UP and be about the BUSINESS of BEING THE STANDARD BEARERS OF THE PREMIER FRNACHISE and exhibit the NYC BALLER mystique and heart.

Now, I’m not Geographically Bias (just bloggin Folly), because I love THE WINDY CITY and Bobb and weave in and out that city on the regular (and they know how get down, I don’t play it cheap), and there is no more beautiful city in THE US than Seattle. But the EAST COAST/MID ATLANTIC/SOUTHERN brand of ball is known for it’s toughness and effort-base ehtic.

The most obvious weaknesses on this TEAM is Mental Toughness, Heart, and Effort. This TEAM has talent. I’m just saying and I’m just blogging…

New York Giants 17 Tampa Bay7!

It will take a miracle for Tampa Bay to comeback.

They need two TDs and a FG to eve tie the game.

At least NY has the Giants to hang our hats on.

  150. Cooley,

Good read, and I do enyoy reading your post. Like you and the other DEE-FENDERS, I am just as disappointed in this Group
of Knicks. Somehow Zeke was able to assemble a group that lacks Mental toughness, Resolve and Dogg. This team is
going NOWHERE, but I do expect the TEAM to eventually start WINNING, once they are completely eliminated from the playoffs and
    are playing for nothing.

Saying that Cooley, I must DISAGREE w/ your take on the a BALLER’S ORIGIN & it’s influence on
their PSYCHE. The statement “The EAST COAST/MID-ATLANTIC/SOUTHERN brand of ball is known for it’s toughness and effort-based ethic”,
is a GROSS GENERALIZATION. JKidd,LeBron,C.Billups,DWade,BBowman, are just a few players outside of the areas that you mentioned that
are Mentally Tough. Ballers that are mentally tough come from everywhere, just as soft-guys come from all regions.

My belief is that Isiah gambled and “CRAPPED OUT”, w/ Curry. The Curry trade was a good trade at the time.
Curry’s age, skills, size and potential made the trade a no-brainer. Also if you factor in that Eddy was in his home town, playing
for a coach he didn’t like, it would be easy to assume a new city was all that he needed. Unfortunately, Isiah could not
measure Curry’s hear & mental toughness. Q is hard-nosed, but DONE, as a contributor, due to back and injuries. N8 is tough, but his
erractic play off-sets his overall game.

    Peace & Blessings

  151. I’m tired of going on fan sites and other blog sites and seeing the same old “Knick Fans” as they call themselves suggesting shit that’s really off the chain. However I do think that come the off season the expiring contracts of Steph and Malik should be used properly. The most proper of course would be to blow it up and clear cap and roster space. The needs are: SF,deadly 3pt. shooter and good Defender.F/C a shotblocker and rebounder that can play both spots for 40 min. and has a jumpshot.New PG and possibly Michael Redd.Maybe using Steph’s contract and a player to get M.Redd,M.Williams and C.Villanueva since they might be having a fire sale. Just Bloggin’. LGK!!

Joe Public continues to laugh at us,and it’s starting to hurt.We have not shown improvement, only in one game. Somebody help us.

And 7 more games till the halfway point in the season. The BEST we could do is 15-24,if we win all 7 games.Where’s hope when you need it.

    @B&B

You can’t even GIVE Steph away for a happy meal this year.lol

  156. Hey Black&Blue:Your idea works better for us b4 the deadline. My idea was post deadline/off season if there aren’t any major moves made.Steph’s contract swells to almost 22mil in the offseason so Steph and one more player would do it.

  157. Point-Counterpoint-Repost! Ain’t America Wonderful! Definitely depends on your lens and location…lol

Statesman, point taken, and you are absolutely correct, it was a gross generalization, and I made the statement for dramatic effect and to accentuate their heartless demeanor and effort that is not symbolic of the NYC CREED (No franchise, TEAM, or player could insult one of my teammates like that without repercussions and some furniture moving…lol). But, I must concede that GREAT BBALLERS come from ALL OVER. And, so do soft ones…lol lol What di
