Sonics@Knicks
December 11, 2007 – 11:53 pmAny doubt since Oden is out, that this young man will be the next rookie of the year? Al Horford may give him a run for his money in the second half of the season, but Kevin Durant is a safe bet to be one of the front runners by the end of this season. I haven’t seen much of his game in the NBA, but I did catch many of his college games last season on ESPN, and they were all phenomenal. He’s a pure scorer and is averaging 20.3p 4.6r and 1.3bl in his rookie campaign thus far. It gets boring to hear Charles Barkley saying every five seconds on TNT how this guy needs to put on weight at 6′9″, 215lbs, but I can only imagine his game would improve once he does.
A lot has been made about the roll the Knicks fans at the garden have had in the team’s recent struggles. The home crowd should cheer for the home team, I believe that, and I’ve never booed any of the games I’ve been to, even when they got blown out up in Boston earlier this year or when they were killing Marbury at this time last season at the Garden. Seems everytime they’d interview Marbury after one of those games, he’d always have the same response: “that’s New York. They’re going to boo if you don’t bring it,” if I can paraphrase last year’s Stephon.
If you want to show the Garden crowd how to really support the home team, check out this link, there are some good deals there on tickets for the Seattle game.
Stephon probably isn’t ready to play yet, but I don’t question by now, he wants to go out there and help the team win some ball games. Randolph shot his way out of his slump last game, so we’ve got one of our two big guys ready to step up and play basketball. Hopefully Eddy Curry isn’t too far behind… Maybe now that Malik Rose has been moved to the IR list, Chandler may actually get some minutes this month. He could be good for the knicks, last time I remember him in a Knicks jersey it was against the Nets in the preseason and there were some encouraging signs he can contribute at the NBA level. Crawford must really try to shift his focus on getting the other players in the starting five going, I’ve seen him do it before, so I know he is capable of finding his rhythm without it being to the detriment of the team.
Kurt Thomas will be back in the Garden, that should be interesting, and the Sonics have other weapons in Chris Wilcox, Earl Watson, WallyWorld, Delonte West, and former Knick guard Gerald Wilkins’ son, Damien, who is putting up solid numbers as a starter for the Sonics in his fourth year in the NBA. Oh, and watch out for the other rookie, Jeff Green, he’s a baller too.
Seattle comes to New York at 5-17, having been blown out by the Bulls 123-96 in the first of a back-to-back on the road.

I’ll say it again. Not since Jesus, O.J., and Michael Vick has any one man had to take so much shi+. I want the team to show the effort and to win, now. I want the lineup shaken up. I want them kids out on the floor. Even Skiles is putting his kids in. More effort, move the ball and play tough agressive D. I’m not shook though because I keep it all in perspective. If this were February and we had 6 wins I might break the glass and start reaching for that button. But had we won the Philly games and lost to Dallas we’d be talking about who we’re going to be up against in round 1. It’s December. The bich’n broad is a non-story and ABS looks like a moosearilla. You only flirt with her to get her to type up some paperwork you don’t feel like doing. Not to get into her husky azz pants. She didn’t deserve one dime. Sneaky beeeyatch.
There is a legitimate outpouring of anger and it only seems to pop out when the team is lethargic or a loss is imminent. The fans have been steered into this by MSM and it has turned into chicken and egg. I play tight and scared because I’m afraid you’ll boo. You boo because I’m playing passively. I’ll say this about the booing though. If you ever get a chance, look at the Euroleague. Even though the basketball is not as exciting most days, the fans are in it big time. MSG has that same power right now. The Knicks have an opportunity to harness that anger and angst and turn it into a weapon to be used against opposing teams.

I’m with you on #1 KD, Balk locked that kid down in Vegas. They are a jump shooting and cutting team. Their center is like 6-7 with long arms. Durant weighs like 135 lbs. and can’t lift diddly. He’s streaky and a chucker. If things start to go bad for the team, he starts “going for his”.

quick notes:
* if these fans are booing most everything then it’s hard to claim these are the smartest fans around. there’s still a difference between knowing the roster and knowing the game.
* gotta love how things worked themselves out last thread. before it got too poisonous too fast (or at least before it got too far out of control), guys worked to find detente. it’s the difference between a community (a band of brothers from different mothers) and a cold arena with guys rushing in to take slapshots.
* we need this game! LGK!

DVJ,
I guess we should just sit and be quiet and accept the losing culture that now pervades the Knicks. Don’t BOO because the fragile egos of the multimillion dollar athletes that we virtually pay by paying for tickets and merchandise can’t take it. Don’t express your frustrations Knick fans ! Just stand there and take it. The team doesn’t give a shit about you but you should get behind them when they give a lackluster effort. Maybe we can have another 20-30 win season and talk about potential while watching other teams make the playoffs.
You are so right DVJ. I see it now. Anyone who is fed up w/ the bullshit at the Garden and expresses that should be banned. brilliant !
By John Q on Dec 12, 2007 at 9:51 am
I don’t think that quote from a blogger is very deep at all. That’s looking at it from an ass-backward way. The last thing Mr. Marbury saw was his son playing a game for a living after growing up in a horrible neighborhood and his brother getting sucked in by the “you’re gonna be a star one day” system.
As much as people want to think Steph is a negative story — he’s a raging success story that doesn’t have to do anything else for anyone else to prove anything. He can buy small countries if he desires and he grew up with zero education with a roundball in his hand. Pretty impressive.
The booing conversations need to stop. Who cares about the boos. Isiah needs to not address fans ever. And people can boo. Without booing, sports wouldn’t be as emotionally exciting. If they boo, they boo, so what?
The problem is that the Knicks combat booing with trying to get points on the board, when the booing is actually for some hard work on the other end of the court. Knicks should hold the Sonics to under 90 tonight. Anything else is a huge disappointment.
Defense needs to be everyone’s priority…even fans and bloggers. See what it’s doing for them down in San Antonio, or up in Boston?
By PC on Dec 12, 2007 at 9:55 am
JohnQ, You seem to have the belief that so many have…if you are paid millions then some how you are suppose to be above it all. Above getting bruised by booing. Above playing tight. Above letting it affect you.
There are some people out there who this doesn’t affect. They are called superstars. MJ. Larry Bird. Magic.
Our humble roster doesn’t have one. I understand you’re fed up, but the point is if the Garden funneled all of its energy into lifting up our team and booing the opponent, then we’d be better off.
The players have to look in the mirror and fix what they are doing wrong.
The coaches have to look in the mirror and fix what they are doing wrong.
The fans have to look in the mirror and fix what they are doing wrong.
By Minnesota Knicks Fan on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:29 am
Great post MKF. I’m going to the mirror right now.
By Jay Bee on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:34 am
MKF,
I don’t think they are above it all. I could see that it would affect them. I can also see that the fans still cheer the team for a solid effort. If they gave 100% effort for 48 minutes the boos would subside. Its not the losing. I’ve supported many a losing team. I have never seen a team that won’t play hard for a whole game. That is unacceptable. Point to 1 game this season where they gave all out effort for the WHOLE game. The last time I saw that effort it was preseason against the C’s.
If the players can’t take the boos they should put in a better effort. NY’ers ARE the most knowledgeable fans and we can tell the difference between a bad team that tries hard and a potentially good team that doesn’t play like they care. Zeke can say what he wants but I aint buying it. You can’t bullshit a bullshitter as my father used to say.
By John Q on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:46 am
JohnQ, I am totally in agreement about the effort. That’s mandatory. But when you are that self-conscious on the court like they are right now…that tight, you can be trying your hardest and still look like a bumbling idiot.
What I’m referring to is the rabid booing that is going on right now. It was the same at the beginning of last year when the Knicks lost what 8 of 9 of their first home games (sorry I can’t remember)… Did the Knicks deserve the boos then? Of course, they were sucking. But did the boos contribute to the fact that they were afraid to play on their home court? No doubt.
Some fans have this sense of entitlement… they deserve better. But what are they doing? How about picking up the team? How about firing up the team?
Now just imagine if the whole Garden said, F#*% it, let’s support them no matter what. We are letting the whole league walk all over us in OUR HOUSE. Then we started chanting “Dee-fense! Dee-fense! Dee-fense!” like crazy. Raising the roof.
There is no doubt in my mind the Knicks would step it up on defense. That’s the power we have.
Right now everyone is choosing to bring them down. Part of that is on us.
By Minnesota Knicks Fan on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:03 am
fwiw, i’m def not anti-booing. it’s the amount and timing of it. if fans are booing a dude every time he touches the ball (assuming buddy hasn’t done anything criminal off-court), then it’s counterproductive. wait til he’s committed a couple, three errors (get that bum outta dere!) before sending in the boo-birds. boo the team during a break in the action after a poor effort, stuff like that. booing can be a kind of negative encouragement, but it’s mostly about voicing displeasure, which is fair and human. there is a point where the venting can actually make things worse. if they play better on the road then that could be a sign (lawd gimmie a sign!).

Game day…….Knicks team need to get mental; Get rid of the nice team losing image. We gotta bang more, intimidate, treat each game like its’ ours, throw bodies make teams feel our presence on the court. We are working too hard to win, playing safely….must do something different now, lets change the effort and work on making the other team lose instead. We got big bodies, so lets use ‘em the right way, stop with the touchy touchy…. Someone has got to step up for the team….if you’re gonna be a bear be a damn grizzly and tear at opponents, beat them down, make them hate us.
By Syd on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:32 am
ok I agree that the boos are excessive and the bandwagon mentality makes more people boo. You can see though, as evidenced in the Mav’s game, the fans will cheer when the effort is good. Where were the boobirds when the Knicks were making a comeback in that game ? Silenced. Thats where.
As I have said before, an all out effort win or lose would kill the birds.
By John Q on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:43 am
Love that comment Syd. Let’s do it! We’ve got fresh meat coming into town and it needs to resemble a feeding frenzy. As for Eddy getting his mouth busted, he needed that. I hope every player he goes up against tries to maul him. Maybe then he’ll reach that breaking point where your balls just won’t let you take any more. Just once Eddy, do it for me, just once lay a hard foul on someone coming into the lane. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!?????!!! Time to break out the Goon Squad. Yo Mardy!! Where you at??
By Jay Bee on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:53 am
this is a snipet of a blog response from Alan’s fix……….
I remember being at a Liberty game back in the day and the team was down 20 at halftime. The fans booed lustily as the team walked off the court, something they had never done. After the game, reporters asked team captain (in every sense of the phrase, something the Knicks don’t have) Teresa Weatherspoon what she thought of the booing and if she was surprised. She said if the team couldn’t put forth the effort, they deserved to be booed, that she agreed with the fans and that it was the first and probably LAST time the fans would ever boo the team as long as she was around. Instead of being upset with the fans and taking it personal, the next home game she was hi-fiving them and jumping into the crowd, diving after loose balls.
What a great attitude for an athlete. I submit that she is more of a “man” than anyone on the Knicks. No excuses and more effort. What a novel idea !!!!

free wilson chandler.
free nate robinson too.
free renaldo.
i know these guys can contribute. fred has been given the chance to play, but even randolph morris may be worth some burn.
i dont mind sticking with the vets when the game is close, but if it is a blowout, and you’re vets aren’t showing you any life, why not play these guys?
i don’t see the logic in the rotation leading up to today. best rotation we had was at the beginning when it was just 8 guys, but now renaldo is back, and jeffries gets some time, and q continues to struggle from the field.
By knicksdefense on Dec 12, 2007 at 5:13 pm
i admit chandler’s reputation coming out of college is sometimes he lacks the “fire and desire” to use all his skills and talent, but you never have that problem with nate and renaldo, and they’re not getting minutes either.

Great catch, Jay Bee. I’m doubtful there’ll be a trade at this point (just the other day zeke was given the chance to trot out the old, “we’re always looking for an opportunity to improve our team” line, and he refused), but just for $hits an giggles, what kind of trade would work with the lakers involving at least javaris crittenton and chandler but not kobe or bynum? Somebody drop some cheese in front of DaVon’s lair.
By Charles Follymacher on Dec 12, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Maybe I have too much time on my hands but I was just thinking about the other snakes in the plane, the agents. They have been quiet. Too quiet. Why have none of them been trying to get their client off of the boat. With things currently so bad record wise I would’ve expected one of the guys on the team to be like, “Get me outta here man!” Is it possible that Curry’s sluggish play is actually a ploy to get himself traded? That would be sad, but I’m just speculating and what if’n. I shouldn’t be thinkin’ them kind of thoughts, but damn.

Okay they don’t deserve it tonight…but IT sure as hell does for his sub patterns.
By DNM on Dec 12, 2007 at 9:49 pm
I don’t believe we are going to lose this game.
They got stomped last night in Chi-town, and we were resting …. and AT HOME!
By D L T Knicks on Dec 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm
durant took all the knicks to the hole.
By knicksdefense on Dec 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm
That was bad defense by Lee. Not only did he fail to cut off the left side, he gave Durant a pick for that dunk.
By HarleminMD on Dec 12, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Why don’t they deserve boos tonight? They’re 6-15 and they gave up a ton of points and played poor defense. Just because it wasn’t a blowout doesn’t mean it wasn’t an awful game. Defense is the entire sport of basketball. Knicks suck at it. Plain and Simple.

Why is Jared not on Durant???

bulls killed this team just last night. they should be too tired to play us.
durant. he’s only going to get better.
the knicks had the game but the knicks sub patterns were garbage like Larry Brown starting players based on home town affiliations. don’t know about you, but it looks as if we are deliberately trying to lose winnable games.
put the 6-2″ fred jones on kevin durant, a guy who can score from basically anywhere on the court.
this was a give me game that we gave away for nothing.
is booing at the very end of the fourth allowed? warranted?

I had a bad feeling about this game in the first half, playing as well as we were and only up 7-9 pts when we should have been leading by double figures.
You have to put bad teams away early. If you let em’ hang around, they start feeling good about themselves.
Good enough to beat you.

No, it’s not allowed because these guys are a shell of themselves and will never get better this way. Let’s face it; the information age doesn’t allow guys to “man up.” The media coverage is intense and constant, like a South Beach sun in July. Curry shoots 60% for his CAREER and he can’t make layups now. Guys are afraid to fail.
We can say they are getting paid big bucks, they need to play like men, blah, blah, blah. These boys are tight. Why not change it up and boycott booing for a game or two? What will it hurt? Isiah is still going to get fired after the season so why not just chill? After 20 games, we know it’s going to be a long season. You can’t be any tougher on the team than the fans already are.
By HarleminMD on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Right now we ARE the worst team in the NBA!
By D L T Knicks on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:07 pm
jeffries should not have come out for curry, he was playing very well for the knicks in the fourth.
nate should not have sat the entire second half after being the top scorer in the first half.
6-2″ fred jones should not have been guarding 6-10″ kevin durant.
Renaldo Balkman got zero minutes despite playing Durant very well this summer.
those are just questionable decisions by Coach Thomas.
By knicksdefense on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:07 pm
Jefferies was a bright spot tonight! He played to his strengths tonight!
Zach, Crawford and Lee played good! We need another piece to those players!
By Peaceman on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Agreed. A sensible move would be for him to remain GM and allow Hanners or Aguirre to coach, at least for the remainder of the season. Then clean sweep if there is no change.
By HarleminMD on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:08 pm
I respect that you see it differently, but I honestly believe booing was not the reason they lost tonight.
By knicksdefense on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:09 pm

it has always been this way with a New York crowd. the past five years, ten years, fifteen years. they boo the kids that do the layups and free-throws competitions during time outs. they boo the little girl that comes out to sing “the sun will come out tomorrow,” during the halftime show. how do you change that?
as far as I could tell, they didn’t boo for 95% of the game tonight. should be enough to knock out a 5-17 that just got blown out by 30 in Chicago last night.

What up Defenders! Another game, another BAAAAAAAAAAAAD lost. I though the most interesting part of the game, was the BBALL banter between Kenny Smith and Gus Johnson, and thier opinion of the state of OUR NY KNICKS.
Gus stated, “Isiah has made some mistakes, and he brought all of the players in (to be specific, he actually named each player and their respective salaries), gave them a lot of Money, and most evenings these players have not played hard for him. This team has quit on him.”
IMHO, I’ve believed that for quite sometime now, because there is no fire and no pride (usually attributes for Defense). May have something to do with Zeke’s unorthodox line ups and match ups (don’t know who he can trust; reaching every game out).
The why at this juncture is irrelevant! It is what it is!
You can’t paint a rosey picture, BUT I AM A NY KNICK FAN FOR LIFE AND I WILL STAND BY MY TEAM! I also believe ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE AND I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. Change is a coming, but we just don’t know the WHEN, WHERE, ah, maybe HOW…LOL

#57 - “Kurt Thomas says it breaks his heart to see the current state of the Knicks…..that he’d come back in a minute, and that he loved NY…”
Yeah Bronxboy - i’d love Kurt back, too…but at this point in his career he’s more Herb Williams than Charles Oakley. Actually, Kurt’s in the last year of his deal at a salary roughly equal to Eddy’s.
Theoretical question: if Seattle offered to take on Curry’s contract if we threw in a couple of second round picks, would you trade Curry & picks for Kurt’s expiring deal?

#79 - “Did you see the commercial where Clyde said the greatest players in the history of the NBA has been rattled by the Garden crowd? What purpose does it serve to boo your HOME TEAM for 10 straight games? Time to back off and be patient fans.”
Bullshit - booing is a reaction, a direct consequence of the double whammy of poor effort levels and consistent losing.
This ain’t a small market club like Green Bay or Kansas City, where fans have far less entertainment options to spend their money. Until the Knicks can either: 1) play .500 ball or 2) show consistent effort levels, they are gonna get the SH*T booed out of them at home, and straight up laughed at on the road. It’s a horrible situation - i hear the excuses about the players being tight, but this is no chicken and egg situation - the Knicks team has created this situation their own selves with dumb play that sometimes seems lackadaisacal.
It could be worse - Philly is a far more rabid market, more negative from the fans and press alike. They never quit until you retire - then they look back with fondness and respect at your career (usually while claiming that your succcessors are absolute garbage). NY fans are vicious, while Philly fans are vicious and stupid. =)
By PaulNoize on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:45 pm
cooley always comes in with the positivity and I appreciate that.
KT was brought in to seattle to teach that young team how to play tough defensively. he was supposed to be a bench guy like Oakley was when he was in chicago the second time around, but he definitely did some damage against the knicks tonight. must feel good for him.
we traded him for Q and nate as you remember. isiah wanted to clean house and make sure each player on the roster was hand-picked and not inherited by from the previous regime.

“we traded him for Q and nate as you remember. isiah wanted to clean house and make sure each player on the roster was hand-picked and not inherited by from the previous regime.”
I remember that…..and I understood where he was coming from, to a certain extent…
But that move was more “ego driven” than what was in the best interest of the organization.
For Q and Nate?
It seemed like a good idea from an offensive standpoint, but of the cast he was assembling, you had to wonder who was gonna guard anybody.
I didn’t agree with that trade. I felt we should have kept Kurt.
BTW, does anyone remember the real reason Kurt was traded?
Hint: He didn’t play tonight.
By bronxboy in Md on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:56 pm
DNM - no offense, but i HATE comments like “i’d trade so and so for a pack of gum”.
Curry’s value given his contract is well below zero at this point - we’d need to package him with substantial assets to get someone to take him off our hands. Q, Steph, Zach and both JJ’s also fall into the substantial negative category (damn - that means we quite literally couldn’t GIVE AWAY HALF OF THE ROSTER!)
That’s not an indictment of them as players, it just means their productivity per salary cap dollar is WAY BELOW the league average. Every team has guys like this - we just have a few more than most.
It’s why i think criticism of Isiah on “bringing these guys in” is very unfair - he didn’t start with zero players, the only guys he had to trade were negatives and he had to take negatives back in return. He chose a different and risky type of negative - ones with high talent levels. He has been creative, aggressive and fearless in making deals in the past, i think one trade that slots the right guy in the right spot could be just the thing we need.
i think its a three. We need a pure three, a savvy lockdown defender who plays well without the ball. Artest is the obvious guy, a bit too old and a bit too expensive - but beggars can’t be choosers. We tried solving the problem on the cheap by using the MLE on JJ. Not so good. =(
By PaulNoize on Dec 12, 2007 at 10:57 pm
More disappointment and bleeding. Home stand has become home fiasco. How does Balkman only play 6 minutes when he totally stopped Durant (30 points) during a summer league game? Marbury DNP but Fred Jones only put up 2 points in 32 minutes and Nate had poor shooting night 5 of 17 with 1 of 8 from 3 point range. This was a game that should have been won. No second half stops. Jeffries played o.k. in spots but Jeffries and Q do not a small forward make. What’s next? Zeke cannot stand pat with this team or lineup. Again no Chandler. As astutely observed by Jay Bee in #25, Chandler is eligible for trade on Decmeber 15th–Saturday. Maybe a trade is possible then. Perhaps the next half-time song should be from The Grateful Dead: “Can’t Help Thinking About Tomorrow.” KFL
By Post - up Prince on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:04 pm
BX–I believe the locker room quote from KT about that situation was “I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass.”
I just looked at the box score. renaldo got 5 minutes, i didn’t even notice him in the game, his presence wasn’t felt.
Q has struggled because of back surgery in the offseason.
mardy hasn’t shown us anything this year, he had knee surgery in the offseason.
Eddy, he’s getting 10 less attempts at the basket this year now that Zach is the first option.
D lee has been affected by Zbo as well but not as much as Curry.
Im not saying zbo is a problem, i’m saying the trade has made things more complex instead of simplified. complexity is no good for a basketball team.

tonight’s game was close throughout.
Durant is big-time, an upgrade over rashard lewis who is a very good player himself…
jamal had a good game tonight. he scored, and he got Zbo involved with good feeds.
knicks need more two-way players.
knicks need players that play above the rim.
knicks need shot blockers.

By knicksdefense on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:21 pm
Post-Up Prince: Fred’s been a nice surprise this season i think, primarily because he’s STEADY at both ends….but he gets exposed in extended minutes against starting competition as a journeyman.
What does CTFU mean?
If we’re gonna tank, then here’s what i’d do: bench Curry. Start Zach / Lee / Balkman / Jamal / N8 and play them HEAVY minutes. Establish regular substitution patterns - worry less about matchups and more about developing on-court chemistry and defined roles for each player. Let Curry’s minutes wax and wane in direct proportion to his defensive efforts on the court - and tell him about it every day, both privately - and if he sulks, then do it publicly.
Q would be the next guy off the bench when FULLY healthy. In reality i guess Steph becomes the third guard while Q sits. Let Chandler back up Balkman and use them as an offense/defense solution.
Stick to an 8-man rotation as much as possible. Jeffries, Fred, Jerome, Randy, Malik etc would be DNP-CD’s most of the time, only to be used to send a message to a certain player that their performance is unacceptable.
Behind the scenes, i’d tell Curry i would be pleased as punch if he played fifteen minutes a night and fouled out of every game without scoring any points. i’d also tell him to artificially “manufacture” ESPN-like highlight rel moments which revolve around hard fouls, rejections, scowls and hopefully bodies hitting the floor. Even if this “tough guy” marketing effort is totally fugazi, i think it ultimately would do wonders for Eddy’s psyche and also his marketability - especially in smaller, more insulated and nurturing environments. i think Curry would be a nice fit in Charlotte with a guy like Okafor getting his back a la Ewing/Oakley.
i know, i know - my posts are pretty negative tonight. i am trying to stay in the light….a win or even just some old fashioned hustle & heart would go a LONG WAY towards easing my heavy heart. =(

For the good of this franchise, pray that we end up with the worst record in the leauge and with the first roundpick in the draft, thats the ONLY way Knicks will have a chance to turn this around in the near future.
Just imagine having a player like Durant on our team….sometimes you have to take one step back in order to go two steps forward. Knicks have to do this now, this year, not next, now. We need a franchise player, even if we have to wait a couple years for that player to develop. Orlando did it with Dwight, Durant will lead his team in a few years to success if they dont screw up. The only way…
