Jason Kidd: out sick or deserted the team?

December 6, 2007 – 3:32 am

When I first heard Jason Kidd was to miss the Knicks-Nets game because of a migrane, I was reminded of Steve Francis who also had migrane problems for a few seasons with the Houston Rockets.

Now it seems in the article below that the thought is being put forth that Kidd intentionally sat out last night because he wasn’t given the contract extension discussion he was seeking.

Assume it is true that he chose not to be there for his team: is it that much different in principle than Marbury leaving the team for one game last month for personal reasons?

You ask your average sports fan and they’ll tell you who’s who: Kidd is the winner who makes everyone better, Marbury is the malcontent who makes a team suck, that’s the image that has been ingrained over the years, fair or unfair.

This recent article by Fred Kerber of the Post tells me things may vary from the usual public opinion when it comes to Kidd. Reminds me of the shocking articles people wrote on David Robinson when he was petitioning for his last sports contract. For once, NBA’s model citizen was uncharacteristically painted as selfish by sports writers.

Also, now that I think about it, Vince Carter’s exit from Toronto was anything but graceful: he seemed to be playing bad on purpose to facilitate a trade, take a look at his numbers just before and just after his move to the Nets. Yet the dude makes the all-star team every single year so his image was not damaged by his successful scheme to get out of Toronto.

Bottom line, public perception in the NBA isn’t always very accurate or usually fair for that matter. I doubt LeBron, Carmelo or Durant will all be viewed in the same light as they are now in ten years; more than one of them will probably win the title, yet one of them may be relabeled a “Dominique,” a great player statistically but not a “champion.” Nique is still one of my favorite players ever, by the way.  Hopefully the newer generations (people like Jason Horowitz) realize how good of a player he was.

  2. Repost!! (from the preseason):

Nets: (41-41) Byron Scott’s team with a weaker coach. Funny how the media gives Lawrence Frank a pass when Scott took essentially the same team to the finals twice. Karma’s a beeeeyatch though and they haven’t been back since. Kidd’s back is worse off than they’re letting on. He had an epidural to alleviate the pain. Have a baby and see what an epidural can do to you. Kidd is going to miss a significant amount of games because the grind will grind his old azz up. He needs rest and they can’t afford to give it to him. If he does go down, deduct seven games from that total. Someone has a little Jason Kidd voodoo doll and he’s beatin’ that little mutha in the back, that someone is Byron Scott. Without Kidd to make him look smart, Frank is exposed as a hard working fraud. He won’t get fired though, because he’s a “good guy”. Well that and he’s so little and cuddly with that swoop dog hairstyle. I’m sure Thorn doesn’t go to bed without his little Frankie.

  3. Jason Kidd just did the same thing Steph did, but it won’t even be a blip in the media. Jason got Byron Scott fired. Now he has his sights set on another coach he thinks doesn’t know as much as he does, Lawrence Fraud.

This time though he’s right. Although Byron Scott has vindicated himself with the way he’s got New Orleans playing. Fraud will either reconcile or trade Kidd and sell fans on the future, ’cause the present would suck big time. There will not be another Marbury for Kidd trade so stop salivating but there is a good chance the Nets will begin a steep descent in Below.500land. With games at Houston next, followed by Washington, Clippers, Cleveland, NY, SacTown, Miami, GoldenState, Detroit, Washington, and Milwaukee in December left to go. A lot of those could be winnable games for them, but could go the other way as well.

Long as they keep up the dysfunction long enough for us to get another win out of them 12/15/07 I don’t care.

  4. Kidd’s an all-star vet who’s usually media-friendly. He’ll prolly get a pass from most people if it’s still at the rumour stage. Wince Carter, usually a happy-smiley guy by nature, is DETESTED (ptui!) in toronto even to this day. everyone wanted the nba’s best dunker out of that market anyway so he figured it was a good bet he’d survive the bad press. so far so good.

Mebury hasn’t earned the same benefit of the pout.

  7. Great game last night. They look alot better out there without Steph and EC. Very few times did we break off the play. The ball moved. D-fense was played ! WOW.

J Kidd deserted his team ? The media seems like they are all over this today. I wonder if that will become a recurring thing or will it get pushed out of the press in a hurry. Kind of like his not being able to play w/ Jackson and Mashburn thus forcing the Mavs to break up a great trio, cheating or beating his wife, getting his coach fired, feeling up that woman in a nightclub and now sitting out. His life parallels Steph’s in many ways. The only difference is that he is more media friendly. So he gets a pass ?? Gotta love the MSM.

Those are STATEMSANS rules. Since he doesn’t run this site, they don’t apply to me or anyone else here. People can post whatever relevant information they want, and since I’ve met Fred Kerber and know how closely and honestly he covers the Nets on a daily basis, I have no problem citing his work as a point of reference.

  9. Random thoughts on last night’s game. Great win.
Packed house at the Izod Center last night.
    Free red Izod caps.
Seems like Nets tix are as expensive or more expensive than Knicks tix. Unbeleivable!!
Seems like there were as much Knicks fans as Nets fans out there.
    The Nets really Suck!
I Kidd is really holding them hostage, he’s already won!
Craw and Marbury should never play in the backcourt together again.
Craw needs to play with a good defender like Fred, who covers his defensive deficiencies.
Craw is so much better with the ball in his hands. He’s still a liability on D, and should never be put on any two in the league.
    Fred Jones is solid.
Is Lee still suffering from his ankle injury? He constantly gets his shit blocked lately.
After the game, Carter asked Zeke if he can get him out of the swamp.
Zeke asked him if he can get him in the swamp.

I just got a call from a guy claiming to be Nichols selling term life insurance.
I don’t believe it’s the same Nichols, but what a coincidence!
My reply was. “This ain’t Syracuse.”
To which he said. “I was a great defensive player there.”
I think he was just kiddin’ or a different Nichols, since the real Nichols is about to take over the league in Cleveland. Zeke goofed on this one didn’t he?

    Thats funny!
I am eating Crow about my past comments about Jones!
It don’t taste that bad! I believe some day you will
do the same with Nichols! When you can shoot like him
there’s always a spot in the NBA! Rejection sometimes
makes you more dilligent! Imagine if M. Jordan never
got cut from his High School team, would he have been
    the legend he is today?

I’m starting to believe Chandler may be a BUST!
If he’s playing good in practice, that should equal PT!
From the little time I have seen him play this year,
getting abused by Pierce and his shot that hit the middle
of the top of the back board was the most embarassing shot
of this Knick season so far! Hook da brother up with Nichols
Boss, so Chandler will have a job next year!

  13. 32. Dnice: his ego is writing checks his game can’t cash.

I was rooting for the kid as another Isiah draft pick gem until I read an interview he gave Alan Hahn when the knicks played the Cavs. He’s full of himself, no humble aspect about him, so I’m not rooting for him any longer, regardless of what Isiah thinks. Knicks desperately need a tall shooter though. Q isn’t playing like an NBA starting small forward this season.

  16. knicksdee, ken berger basically putting up what we’ve all been talking about. cool.

but, to me, dalembert isn’t SOO good at blocking shots that it warrants dumping curry. not yet. i like dalembert and if the trade happens i wouldn’t cry. but what chance is there that Stefanski is thinking of ridding the Sixers of their lone big man? Look at the roster, they have no one else. No other shot blockers. No other rebounders. Dalembert’s contract is not expiring. It’s big but not a “terrible contract” cuz the guy produces.

Andre Miller is interesting. I’d go that route…but he makes a lot less than Stephon. And if you trade Curry for Miller, you still have Steph.

It was one game against a Kidd-less team.

We shouldn’t be proposing trades based on last night’s performance.

Having said that, yes, Curry and Marbury should be considered expendable for an uptempo/defensive minded big man who can man the Center as either a starter or as the first big off the bench…while Lee starts. *and the crowd goes wild*

It will be a great day in NY when Lee gets the starter’s job. Grown men like Breen everywhere will cream themselves. If men could become pregnant from complementing men, Breen would have had 10 of Lee’s children last night.

  17. He He He! I told you…….
    Peace:
Nichols gave me a great discount! I think I’ll give him the business. God knows he needs it.
Chandler is defenitely not a bust.
Zeke’s feeling the heat, and rooks are the best coach killers. You can’t rely on a rook when your ass is on fire, he’d make that mistake and use the gasoline bucket instead of the water bucket.
    Chandler is a keeper.

By African on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:30 am

  18. BARF

ZEKE will never trade Curry! Bench him until he plays defense, yes. But trade him?
Can you imagine the backlash of such a trade? Remember it was Curry who went Public
with wanting a trade if Zeke was fired last year, when Curry almost made the All Star team!
That would be Zeke putting a nail in his own coffin!

By Peaceman on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:37 am

  19. JQ

    Interesting first proposal.

Although Brad Miller is way more expensive than Curry, at least he’s a big who can rebound, make a pass, make a jumpshot and pick up all the fouls (some of will be hard fouls) allotted to him.

I’m trying to think of a reason why the Kings would not want the trade to go through. They get a 2 for 3 with Malik being the only head-scratcher. Malik is expiring next year so that replaces the expiring of Artest’s contract this year. Plus, they get something back for the over-priced Miller. Interesting. I wouldn’t be mad at that trade. Solid all throughout even if I’d miss Nate…the snitch.

    Ha. Kidding Peace.

So if Nate’s not the snitch then why has he been sitting so much? No one’s roster spot is safe, especially knowing the inconsistency of the starting lineup. But Nate was playing well to start the season. I had noticed Nate forcing passes, chucking shots and generally losing a bit of the control he was working hard to maintain. Could be that Isiah has noticed the slip back too and maybe more so in practice. I don’t know.

  20. African,

Not knocking Chandler, but we had a greater need for a shooter at the time, and still do.

    We should’ve drafted Morris Almond.

  21. @ Peace,

Different year and situation about Curry.

Anyone who watched Curry play this season isn’t upset with Zeke if he trades him.

    Trust me.

  22. African lol!

What play by Chandler are you baseing your Keeper Status on?
Surely not that infamous top of the back board shot? lol
I’ll agree that he has great Bench posture! He looks good there!
Maybe he is a Keeper? He’s towel free on the bench!

By Peaceman on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:43 am

  23. Listen up folks!
I know what I’m about to say would be a shock to some or all of you here, but I thought about it.
Call me crazy. I’ve been called worse.
    I wouldn’t trade Curry.
I would trade Zach to get a playmaking point, AND a shot blocking defensive post defender.
The guy that comes to mind is Chandler. I’m not sure who N.O. has as their back-up, but it can be a three team trade, with Steph also being in there.
I wouldn’t give up Curry. Curry needs a playmaker to gat him the ball in the sweet spots, and a defensive big.
Call me stubborn, but I rememer the days of Kurt Thomas playing center for my team.
Curry is not as bad as you folks make him out to be. We all know his shortcomings, but I guess i’m a little more patient than most of you.

By African on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:46 am

  24. Peace, about Curry, never say never.

Depending on the deal, it could be good for him to trade him. No one thought he could trade Steve Francis either and he picked up a 20-10 ZBO and FJones “the throw in” is showing he could get some major burn on a team that wants him.

So Zeke traded Francis and Frye for 2 serviceable players.

If he could do the same with Curry, I’m down.

If not, I can look forward to Curry growing up on the defensive end. I agree with Isiah. I HAVE noticed Curry looking to block shots and looking to stop penetration. but to be honest, he’s not very good at it. He’s got the gift of “good hops” but he’s just so slow in reacting to the drive. He has no knack for anticipating a shot. You can tell cuz he jumps way after shots are released if he even attempts to jump at all. He’s got the size and athletic ability but he does not have the “gift”.

Maybe Curry could remain “injured” and stay back at the practice facility working on his conditioning for a week. Try to crash-drop 10-20 pounds and see if that will help his energy level increase.

I’d rather see him a Knick cuz I like the guy but I wouldn’t be mad at a good trade.

By BARF on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:49 am

  25. Af, Byron Scott already got rid of Stephon once in NJ. I doubt he’d do that again.

Chandler is the prototype to put alongside Curry. But N.O. won’t let go of him now. He’s pulling down 20 rebounds every other game and getting his share of blocks too. If anything, we trade Curry to them but other than David West…I don’t like anyone on their team (that I think is remotely available).

By BARF on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:55 am

  26. If we traded Curry the press would have a field day saying that Zeke wasted picks and time getting Curry for nothing. I say just like the Francis/Frye trade, if we got a defensive presence in Miller and Artest it would all be worth it.

By John Q on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:55 am

  27. this jumped out from hahn’s latest blog offering:

Think Curry hasn’t noticed the trend going away from him? Before the game, when Curry was talking about the ankle injury that kept him out of last night’s game, a reporter joked that Crawford should get all of Curry’s shots for the night. Curry retorted, “He can have them, all nine of them.”

By BARF on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:59 am

  28. A Curry trade for someone less than a Superstar, would result in Zeke changing his plan
more times than Larry Brown’s line ups! The MSM would Lynch him on the loyalty Zeke would Show his player who may,
and I say “may” have saved his Ass last year with that Public statement about wanting a trade if Zeke were fired to the press!
Hey, I’m not agreeing that it’s right, but you Know the MSM would combine this, the draft picks for Curry and Shit
we can’t imagine to force Zeke out of town! It would happen without the trade being at least J. Oneal or Artest!

By Peaceman on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:02 pm

  29. the randolph trade is a complicated matter. you can’t deny what randolph brings to the game statistically, but which team would you rather have, last year’s with Curry and D Lee putting up good numbers nightly, or this years with just Zach putting up big numbers? As far as records go off hand, I’m not sure, but after the brawl we were playing at .500 for quite some time. The knicks are .500 over the last 8 games, however, if you don’t mind three or four large blowout losses.

none of the three players are defensive minded, none of the three are great at passing either.

By knicksdefense on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:09 pm

  30. peace. i agree that that would be the case. but you can’t NOT make trades (good trades is what i really mean) because of what Lupica, Geico and Fattie Assola might say. Until they are all gone from the scene or the Knicks are perennial ’ship contenders, that’s the kind of reporting those front-runner asses deliver.

    Welcome to NY.

    that’s tough.

By knicksdefense on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:14 pm

  32. Barf:
I’m saying a three team trade. Not necessarily to N.O. I don’t think Steph played for Scott before. Steph wasn’t there when Scott arrived.
I would agree that N.O. probably wouldn’t want to give him up, but in Zach, you have a scoring big man, something lots of teams need. That’s not the biggest need for us fortunately. But do you get my drift? Our biggest needs would be filled. shot blocking and point play.
    Just bloggin’.
    Peace:
Chandler will suprise you like Fred did. Chandler just needs some seasoning. He’s a very confident youngster to his detriment. That’s why he took those three or four shots after he saw the first burn. He’d be fine.
The M.L. Carr towel should go to Malik the scholar.

That Zach trade was a good one for us, Zach puts up good numbers, but he’s a ball hog.
His stock is high at this point.
Trade him or a shot blocker and a point. Someone that can feed the beast on offense, and someone to defend the basket.
We become instant contenders. You cannot break up this team.

  38. AF, I must have gotten my timelines crossed up. As punishment I will research exactly when Byron and Steph were at NJ.

You have a point about bringing Chandler over and sending ZBo to N.O. But it still leaves them without their stopper. ZBO or Curry alongside Chandler would be ideal. I just don’t see how someone else is going to pry Chandler away. Not because he’s a superstar but because he’s so young and is what most teams want/expect from their 5 spot.

Curry is a different beast altogether. I’ve always said that Curry doesn’t have to be as good as Ben Wallace on the boards and as good as Dikembe with the blocks to be a respectable franchise center. His offensive game in the post is much better than most centers in the league. But playing defense with him on the floor looks like 4 on 5. That’s no joke.

To his credit, its not like Curry’s man has huge games on him. Generally speaking, centers don’t make Curry look silly. But when team’s know that all they have to do is get Curry out of the paint by running the pick and roll, team’s go crazy on us. They make the team switch until it’s ZBo’s turn to run out to defend the three…and that shit doesn’t work for us.

If Curry could block a shot or two, we could run a zone more often and give him the responsibility of staying home and waiting for the blocked shot while the rest of the team guards the perimeter. You can’t get away with a strategy like that with Curry guarding the rim. He’s slow reacting to the drive, he’s slow when he’s forced to turn around in the paint, he’s slow off his feet for a block…about the only thing he does well in the post is guard his man straight up and box out. And his boxing out is very conditional.

  39. Oh the irony. Poor D-Nice is was misled by someone who thought he was really good. I think it was the NY area Newspapers if you ask me. Read what Mike Brown had to say below. It’s hilarious Defenders.

To make room for Varejao on the roster, the Cavs waived rookie forward Demetris Nichols. He played in three games, shooting 1-of-8 from the floor. Nichols is a project the Cavs took on at the start of the regular season by picking him up off waivers from the New York Knicks. The Cavs liked him, but he was expendable because he has a nonguaranteed contract.

”He has potential, but he’s probably not ready now,” Cavs coach Mike Brown said. ”It would be great for him to get some experience in the D-League or in Europe.”

By boomann on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:37 pm

  40. Keep Zach and trade Curry!

This isn’t about where he likes the ball and his sweet spot et al….It’s the about the Knicks as a whole!!

Maybe if he shows more effort and enthusiasm on the defensive end, he’ll get the rock where he likes it!

Agree with getting a shot blocking big or a nice SM (Artest) to compliment the front line.

Curry isn’t the dude you build around. Zeke tried it last year and we won some games, but overall it was a bust.

    He’s strictly support material.

By Bronxboy in Md on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:38 pm

  41. AF, I saw the scholarly looking hook thrown by the Knicks’ future CEO of a Fortune 500 company. It looked like a Curry hook in terms of form and quickness…but when it hit nothing but empty space, I realized Curry wasn’t playing and ZBo never chucks up such hideous looking shots.

ZBo is the Knick’s best player right now. Why trade him?

Look, if there are no teams that WANT Curry and are willing to put together a good package for him, then forget it. I’m not desperate to gt rid of him and I doubt Isiah is too. Unless a Curry trade is another lop-sided deal like the Steve Francis one, the media would absolutely kill him. I agree. SO basically what I’m saying is, if Isiah pulls off an “isiah-deal” for Curry or Marbury, I’m down. If not, I’m down anyway.

I like this team. I see it going places for the next few years. But it definitely has holes and those holes aren’t filling themselves up by themselves. There is a lot of talent on the squad but DLee isn’t turning into a shot blocking PF and Balkman will not gain the 30 lbs he needs to run at the bigger positions overnight…or even over the summer. That means, we need more bodies. But not at the expense of our best players.

By BARF on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:41 pm

I totally agree with your take on Curry, but I think the remedy is a shotblocker. I’m a bit more patient with him.
This guy has tools around the offensive basket that I haven’t seen in a while.

  44. Chicago blew it on that one but that’s not what gets run in the papers. The Bulls took a step back. Who would have thought that PJ Brown was the player holding them together.

With Curry, the remedy is a shot blocker. Its tried and tested.

But that doesn’t mean picking ZBo up for nothing was a mistake. You can’t let that deal slip through your fingers.

It makes me think that Curry’s best shot ON THIS TEAM is running with the second team until a shot blocker emerges from within the ranks or we trade for one.

I’m not calling the ECity/ZBo experiment dead…because against some teams it works…I’m just saying that for the roster to have balance and the team to run efficiently, Curry needs another Robin to his Batman. Or more like he needs a Bam-Bam to his Pebbles.

    Sorry Eddy

Ask Kareem. Ask Ewing. Ask Kenyon Martin. Ask Amare. Ask Hakeem.
Who’s Dallas’ point? My point exactly.
I’m not trying to hide Curry’s deficiencies. It’s well documented, but a shotblocker changes lots of equations, and amps up the team defense as a whole. This team has none.

Go back to the next to last preseason game, where D-nice got 3 minutes!
He scored 10 points with 2 treys all net and drove for 2 and hit 2-2 free throws!

“My position is I just think it’s an invasion,” he said. “It’s good for television, but it’s an invasion of my privacy and our privacy when it comes to saying whatever it is you want to say. I think coaches are going to be very inhibited, as much as people assure us that they’ll only put out there what is good. I won’t be able to deal with it very well, so I’ll be mute.”

A Heat player also will be offered the opportunity to wear a microphone, with Ricky Davis given the option for tonight.

Tomorrow is a tough assignment: Phoenix, which is 10-1 already against the East. After that? The Nets, last-in-the-league Minnesota, the unbelievably awful Miami Heat, Sacramento without leading scorer Kevin Martin, the unbelievably awful Chicago Bulls, Atlanta, the Pacers, Bobcats, Nets again, Heat again. If the Wizards want to build some momentum and some confidence in one another, this is the stretch where they have to become a team . . . even without Arenas.

  57. Peace all’s he has to do was go over to Europe until Malik’s contract expired like he might have to do anyway and he could of saved face and still held an NBA job on the team with the person who took a chace by trading a draft pick for him. Now he looks like a pompous asshole who’s out of work. Telling people he’s out to prove something and then turns around a proves absolutly nothing. But what do I know, he might come back hard like Jordan did after being cut in high school. This is how things transpired for the one who was to prove himself.

Step 1- Isiah trades next year’s second rounder for D-Needstoshutthefuckup with the idea of giving him a year of seasoning in Europe.

Step 2- D-Needsajob then goes to Summer league which he was suppose to use to get experince with his teammates and a feel for the NBA before flying off to Europe.

Step 3- During Summer League Nichols discovered he was wide open an awful lot for practice like shots which boosts his confidence to stratosphere level.

Step 4- D-Usetobenice starts campaigning for a spot on this year’s squad totally neglecting the earlier agreement he had made forcing Isiah to trade for Jared Jordan who he pitches a similar deal of going to Europe for a year. Jared accepts and is playing in Lithuania while D-leaguer is out of work.

It’s even funnier when I type out the list of events.

  66. LOL! the back and forthing on d-nice is hilarious. a big lineup to take a sip from the toldyaso cup. lol! i feel a little pride in helping to make this rook such a hot topic.

but african, here’s the thing: given this guy’s college career, how he performed in summerleague (interesting that some were saying he was dropping shots with a hand in his face, now it’s wide open, uncontested shots; some were ballyhooing n8’s performance in summerleague, but now summerleague means absolutely nothing) and pre-season, you want to give up on this guy, he has no place in the league. yet you have six years of curry’s track record that shows he has no (consistent) desire for defense yet you still want to believe he can become a defensive force.

i don’t get that. it’s like you absolutely refuse to believe your own eyes.

anyhoo, cavs cut a guy to take d-nice and when it was time to take mophead back, they chose to stick with 2nd year guy shannon brown who happened to have a great game the night before. it’s 48 hrs of waiver time and there’s 14 spots avail in the league. some other team might take a flyer. if his confidence isn’t too low after an 8-FGA stint in the league, he’ll return to spit toldyaso juice back at his detractors.

    p.s. knicksdee @ #7, fair enough.

  67. Peace my man. I was scanning the papers like a hawk during pre-season and I recall the article like it was yesterday. He had Billy Duff for an agent or somebody who’s name was similar to that and he fired him because he thought he was getting a raw deal.

    Back to my story

Step 5- D-Needsaclue signs with Clevleand and immediatly proclaims his future greatness and how Isiah and the Knicks made a Big mistake.

Step 6- D-Needsminutes shoots 14% from the field and is rendered useless in the Cleveland offense

step 7- D-iscutagain finds himself on the waiver wire for the second time in two months while Mike brown tells him the same exact thing Isiah was trying to get him to understand.

Step 8- D-issad lets one single solitary tear fall from his eye while sitting in the Cleveland Cavs parking lot after cleaning out his locker.

Is this the end for Nichols or will he battle on? He needs his own reality show.

  75. Nets’ Kidd refutes reports that he is ‘on strike’

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Jason Kidd said he had a migraine and was not “on strike” — refuting newspaper reports that he he missed New Jersey’s game on Wednesday against the New York Knicks because he was seeking a trade or a contract extension.

    Kidd
Kidd directly shot down the story on WFAN-AM radio in New York on Thursday afternoon saying “I did have a migraine.”

The eight-time All Star did say his agent and the Nets have been talking about a possible contract extension, but that would never play into him missing any action.

“I would never disrespect the game by not playing because the game has been so good to me,” Kidd told the radio station.

Nets president Rod Thorn said Thursday that he did not believe the reports.

“He was sick,” Thorn said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, adding that he spoke with Kidd on Thursday morning. “He was very hurt about some of things in some of the articles and he plans to address it.”

Kidd scheduled a news conference later Thursday at team headquarters.

Thorn said Kidd sent a text message to trainer Tim Walsh around noon Wednesday, informing him that he had a migraine and would get back to him later in the day.

At around 4 p.m. — 3½ hours before Wednesday’s game the Knicks won 100-93 — Kidd sent a second text message telling Walsh he would not be able to play, Thorn said.

“I think that raised some suspicions,” Thorn said, adding that he doubted Kidd would desert his teammates to make a personal point. “He has played with so many injuries over the course of his time with us that some people think he’s an automaton.”

The New York Post quoted a team source as saying: “He’s on strike.”

Kidd, who played last season with a cracked rib and sore back, was the subject of rumors at the trading deadline in February, with the speculation that he would be shipped to the Lakers.

The 13-year veteran is currently second in the league to Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash, averaging 10.4 assists. The point guard is tied for 21st, averaging 8.7 rebounds and 18th with an average of 1.67 steals.

Kidd is under contract through the end of next season, making $19.7 million this year and $21.3 million next.

The Nets had high hopes they would be able to challenge the revamped Boston Celtics in the Atlantic Division this season.

However, they are 9-10 in a frustrating season that has seen center Nenad Krstic struggle returning from major knee surgery and Vince Carter miss five games with a sprained ankle. The Nets lost all five games.

  79. I don’t think trading Curry or Randolph is the solution.

Curry needs conditioning. Can he do that in the course of the season? I think so. Randolph had 5 assists against PHX and 4 against the Nets. I think he is starting to buy into the Team offense concept and passing out of double-teams. ZBo also had 3 steals yesterday. What both he and Curry needs to learn is Team-defense and passing out of DB-teams on offense. That will take maybe till the middle of the season for this to work effectively.

Until we get a different point, I think what we can do is switch PGs even during games. Start with Craw at the point to get him loose early and switch Marbs to the 2. Also Fred Jones needs to get more minutes to keep Marbury and Craw fresh. Nate could play 8-10 minutes a game.

  82. Re: #78 - I like that post Jazz. Especially the part about Curry needing conditioning. I bought into the newsflash that he had lost 20 during the offseason, but his play has been lethargic. I would stick with the ankle story and tell reporters that he’s getting treatment and put his big azz in a bootcamp type program with a personal trainer who is under contract to keep his damn mouth shut. Have him working out 3-4 times a day and keep him away from them homemade biscuits and gravy his wife be makin’ by putting a personal chef in the house whipping up every low-fat meal.

If it were me, him, Zach and Q would have personal chefs at the team’s expense. You’re paying almost 20 mil a head and you can’t spring 300k to make sure they are eating like athletes?

By John Q on Dec 6, 2007 at 4:11 pm

  84. From ESPN

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Jason Kidd insisted a migraine caused him to miss a New Jersey Nets game, brushing aside reports he was staging a personal one-day strike to induce a trade or force a new contract.
“I didn’t miss a game due to unhappiness, that’s the first thing to clear up,” the All-Star guard said Thursday at a news conference he called at the Nets’ headquarters.
Kidd said he was hit in the mouth Tuesday night in a game against Cleveland, and he later developed a migraine. He alerted trainer Tim Walsh about the problem Wednesday about noon, and he later called and said he could not play against the New York Knicks. The Nets lost 100-93.
“I am human, at the end of the day, I am human,” said Kidd, who didn’t seem angry with all the attention the reports created. “I went out and played with one leg. I played with a broken rib and yesterday, I just couldn’t go. There was no plan of me not going. I felt that I couldn’t help the team.”
Kidd’s unexpected absence created instant headlines.
A source told the New York Post that Kidd was “on strike.” Yahoo reported that he was looking to be traded to Cleveland to play with LeBron James. There also were reports that Kidd wanted his contract renegotiated.
Kidd said he learned of the fuss after receiving a telephone call from his mother.
He insisted he never asked to be traded, noting recent comments he made about playing with James and Kobe Bryant were just no-brainer answers to questions posed about whether he would like to play with them at some point.
“I am having one of my best seasons,” Kidd said. “Why would I want to be asked to be traded? And as a team we are doing better than last year.”
New Jersey is 9-10 on the year.

Kidd is under contract through the end of next season, making $19.7 million this year and $21.3 million next. He and Nets president Rod Thorn refused to discuss any current contract talks.

Kidd did tell WFAN-AM radio in New York on Thursday that he and the Nets have been discussing a contract extension though.

“I’m not upset,” said Kidd, who was the subject of trade rumors involving the Los Angeles Lakers in February. “Everything has been taken out of context. I was sick yesterday and I couldn’t play. Everyone has come up with their own theory of me being upset.”

Even if Kidd were upset, he could not come out and say it. The team could fine him for deliberately missing a game, a penalty that would cost him $240,585.37, his game-day salary.

“I would never abuse the game of basketball,” Kidd said.

well Chuck, I think he’s actually another welfare recipient taking advantage of the governments penchant for taking care of the less fortunate. He has a car, an i phone and several other nice toys bought and paid for on your and my hard earned dollar. I would bet that he also spins blunts and drinks alot of it away while watching games on a big screen TV. purchased at the cost of our future SS. That last part is speculation but I bet its true.

Luckily I have a solution that was sent to me the other day………here it is.

    People for Clean Urine

Like a lot of folks in this Country, I have a job.

    I work, they pay me.

I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as they see fit.

In order to get that paycheck , I am required to pass a random urine
Test, which I have no problem with.

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people
Who don’t have to pass a urine test.

Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check, because
I have to pass one to earn it for them?

Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on
Their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping
Someone sit on their rear, and buy dope and booze with my hard earned money.

Could you imagine how much money the government would save if people had

To pass a urine test to get a public assistance check ?

    problem solved !!!!

  107. Here’s a little tidbit for yall to chew on

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (AP) — The New York Knicks’ struggles on and off the court didn’t keep the team from remaining the NBA’s most valuable franchise for the third straight year, according to a list compiled by Forbes.

The Knicks were valued at $604 million, up 3 percent from the previous year despite a spate of losing, a widely publicized defeat in a sexual harassment lawsuit, and continuing questions about the future of coach Isiah Thomas.

The NBA’s marquee franchise also had a league-high $196 million in revenues for the 2006-07 season while topping the list with negative $42.2 million in operating income after going 33-49 and missing the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers decreased in value by 2 percent, down to $560 from $568 million, but remained second on the list. The Chicago Bulls were third with a value of $500 million and a league-best $59.3 million in operating income. Detroit and Houston rounded out the top five.

The Cleveland Cavaliers showed the biggest jump in value among the top 10 teams, increasing 20 percent to $455 million. They jumped from 10th to seventh.

The Dallas Mavericks, who were third on last year’s list after a 15 percent hike in value following their first NBA finals appearance, dropped to sixth. Phoenix, Miami and San Antonio completed the top 10.

  117. I agree with Barf that we should not trade either Curry or Marbury unless we get better value over what we give up. A shot blocker and a small forward of Artest’s caliber would be potentially worth such a trade.

Both E-City and Steph have had their moments this season, and both have had to adjust to playing with ZBo. Its still too early to judge the Zbo-ECity tandem; let them play together for another 20 games and then evaluate the duo. At present, E-City plays better with J.Craw possessing the ball; and Marbury plays better with Zach. All of the above, as well as Lee and N8, are still adjusting to each other’s game and their respective roles on the floor. The NBA trade deadline is not until late February.

As Jazz and Jay Bee have noted, Curry needs to be in better shape. He was presumably working out on his own in Chicago this summer and Mark Aquire reported that he was in good condition. Then his house was raided by gunmen and the trauma from that situtation apparently caused a lapse in his diet and work ethic. He can still practice and play himself into shape.

As for Wilson Chandler, I agree with African. He is only 20 years old
with a svelte body and raw athleticism that needs time, focus and experience. I remember that when Michael Ray Richardson first broke into the league, he sat on Red Holzman’s bench for almost the entire season, despite being the number 4 draft pick overall. During his second season, however, Knick fans were enthralled with Michael Ray’s emerging skills and ability to takeover games from end to end. Give Chandler time. For now, I deem him a keeper.

  119. found some goodies from the KD archives…

my nutty dump eddy for artest trade idear (#38)

me not gettin high off the toldyaso pipe after dnice got picked up (#182) even tho predictions were he would not (boy nobody was eatin crow then, eh?). heh.

fellaz, i’m usually pretty durned careful re how far i go in my praise and predictions (and pooh-poohing, for that matter). that’s why i rarely need to touch crow. i’m not a Mostly Hyperbole fan, i’m a Mostly Cautious fan, remember? generally, i’m not much for goin too far out on a limb with that kind of stuff. that said, i did find this lil tidbit in this ole timey thread from when dnice was first cut (#16)…

“Yo Steady, not to MY chagrin nothin. I’m pretty confident DNice’ll end up somewhere in the NBA this season and will do just fine. I’m just annoyed cutting him might be to Zeke’s chagrin.”

i’ve searched and that’s as far as i ever went re dnice. alls i’ve ever said (a bajillion times now) is that this dude is worth a spot on an nba bench (preferably ours).

now, it’s early, but, fair enough, given the above quote i guess i can put one small, eensy bit of crow on my fork and put it in my mouth. but i ain’t swallowin (oh boy, here cum the gay jokes). i’ll let the bitter bird decompose in a cheek. we’ll see how the season turns out. if he’s not on a roster by season’s end, i’ll not only gulp that bit down, i’ll finish the plate and order seconds. if, however, he is on a roster, i’ma spit that foul out, with violent velocity, in a certain general direction (you know who you are ;-) ).

i’ve said before (#38) that these kinds of “contentious” issues will get sorted out in the fullness of time. in my view, it’s not worth all this rancour, amusing as it is. it’s jus’ bloggin. that’s it. let’s move on.
