knicks play bulls for worst record in the east

November 24, 2007 – 1:02 pm

whats up defenders,

I hope you all had a happy thanksgiving with your family and friends.  I’m still down in sunny Florida (currently about 80 degrees) where I’ve got no internet, hence no updates to the blog in the past couple days.  I did want to give you a new thread for today’s game against the Bulls however.  Let me know how they look–game is in the garden, right?

both these teams are young, and both these teams have expectations much higher than where they currently sit in the standings.

let’s see what happens.

I read-through your man AH early on, and I would never repeat his BS. My sarcasm was misunderstood.
I was referring to one of the BS allegations that ABS made in her trial. Remember she said Zeke
wanted to schedule more afternoon games to allow the opposition to hang out at the Strip Clubs. I
thought the league made the schedule, and she was just throwing junk at the wall. Unfortunately it stuck.

  37. What a relief

    We got a win!

Now lets see if the team can build on it.

Still I feel a lot of wide open jumpers were left open for the bulls that we were fortunate to dodge.

Still a win is a win they need to improve on this and pick out where they could have been better.

By Orange and Blue on Nov 24, 2007

  38. Solid defensive effort. Thomas utilized his bench in the 1st half very well and then trimmed the rotation in the 2nd half. The Bulls management should be scrutinized for the trade rumors and not signing their best offensive threats. 2-9 for a team many picked to win the east. I still hear the rats urinating on cotton at the United Center.

By Vic Corbit on Nov 24, 2007

  39. Peace, you have a point, but the key was that quite a few Knicks played hard.

LOL Steady. I wish it were that easy to take away a loss. 3-9.

States, I think the weak link was ZBo, but he made up for it in the last minutes. Tenacity. Tha’s a long way from the lack of effort we have seen from the team the last few games. ZBo was shaking his head in disbelief, but he hung in there and hit those throws.

Steph played an excellent game. He controlled the tempo on both ends. 37 minutes, 19 points, 6 boards, 1 Steal. 1 block ZERO,/strong> turnovers. Wow. Very nice. Why can’t he do this every game. His decisionmaking was excellent.

Welcome back. Now that you are getting back in the groove can we find an automated way of knowing when you start a new topic. Hec I was having a ball talking to myself on the previous thread. It just is not as scintilating commenting to yourself. Know what I mean?

    By St_George on Nov 24, 2007

  42. Vic, I agree that Bulls Management and Skiles has just destroyed the Bulls confidence. However, last season a few of us projected this demise because Skile’s act wears thin quickly, especially as his players become vets. He treats his players like College boys as evidenced by his treatment of Thomas. And thise Kobe rumors just killed their spirit. It’s too late to make the trade now. LA is playing decent ball.

We cleaned up on the boards 52-42.

I like the combo of Balk and Jeffries for short stretches to change the defensive tempo and put pressur on the guards, but Balk tensds to cheat and get caught leaving his man for mid-range jumpers and tres. Zeke needs to do something about that.

I can’t wait until we get Nate back. This whole fiasco seems to have impacted him more than most. He probably expected to start instead of Mardy. He was forcing action today and 11 minutes is not much burn. He needs more shots, like 10 a game. Crawford had only 1 TO in 47 minutes, but note that the entry passes were coming from the top of the key more often. The ball comes in from the top to the key (Zach or David) and then the ball goes into Curry, but Zach has got to make those bounce passes. He had six TOs today.

By Lives In New Jersey. Loves New York on Nov 24, 2007

  43. The first big hurdle is regaining confidence. This is a good start. Monday morning, let’s forget that we won and act like we still need one. Utah at 9-4 and a two game winning streak (bitch slapping NJ by 27 and the Hornets by 28) is very beatable, especially since they play Detroit the previous afternoon. It’s so good to half Balk and Jeffries back. I can’t wait for Richardson to be able to hit that tre again, but he is hustling.

A back-to-back one game winning streak is possible. Then Maybe we can start a third winning streak against the Beantown Giant.

By Lives In New Jersey. Loves New York on Nov 24, 2007

  44. Oh snap. This can’t be real. The Hornets only scored 7 in the fourth against Utah. What is Sloan doing, giving those boys steroids or something.

  46. An interesting I recall being mentioned during the pregame show was that the Bulls last year started out about 3-9 beat us at MSG and then finished the season at 49-33. They then got to the second round of the playoffs.

Also recall the Miami Heat team that started out with an 11 game loosing streak, they got to the playoffs and even advanced to the second round.

I’m not getting delusional and saying that this team will win 49 games or even be marked to make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs but the season is not over. They off course have to improve in areas like their foul shooting, and the entry passes from the high post needs to be bounce or quicker passes to Curry. Lives adequately pointed out Taz’s tendency to cheat of his man and leave shooters open, and the defense could still be tighter.

Let’s see how this team handles a disciplined team like Utah.

By Orange and Blue on Nov 24, 2007

  47. ‘Lives’

    What!!!!

N8 has been a liabilitiy. If not for Zeke personal fondness of N8, N8 would be bury at the end of the
bench. Before today N8 last 3 games shooting from the floor, 1/8, 0/8, 06, w/ countless turnovers. N8
generally over-dribbles as the shot clock approaches zero, then the team has to take a
bad shot. Today Balkman hit a desperate jumper to bail N8 out. N8 will play fewer minutes, as the
record improve. Zeke does need a backup point.

I thought JCHUCK played a good game. He did not force the action w/ wild shots and turnovers. If he
can allow the game to come to him, the Knicks would be better.

    Peace & Blessings

By STATESMAN on Nov 24, 2007

  48. I recall BARF pointing out how Utah advanced against the Warriors was in part due to their offensive discipline rotating the ball and finding the open man. This is also where the Knicks are still suspect, as well as with the pick and roll.

There was improvement with the pick and roll but today I often saw players with wide open looks that were missed. Chicago has been on a terrible shooting streak- in part do to having no inside presence- but with a team that can shoot it consistently and is patient a la Utah, the Knicks are going to have to tighten it up.

If Utah will have played Detroit the night before then I hope Detroit makes them expend all their energy, this should help us.

By Orange and Blue on Nov 24, 2007

  49. States when I first read your exclamation, I thought African had been recovered by the Defender Dozen Recon Team.

I respectfully disagree regarding Nate. I don’t disagree that he has been struggling, which is why I wrote that I can’t wait to have him back. But N* is the key to controlling the te,p on the second unit and he is much better at the point with Steph at the 2 than Crawford or Mardy. In the second unit, Nate is the only one who cna create a shot, unless ZBo is in the second unit and ZBo forces too many shots. Nate needs more burn, especailly to give Steph a rest and an understanding that someone else will hustle. I suggest that Nate will play better ball with more time. he will be more relaxed when he knows that his coach will give him some love and not bench him too fast.

Nate is important to this team. And not just for trade value.

  50. Isiah needed this win desperately. Game had it moments on both ends.
Defense was mostly there. Still no offense from 3 spot. Q must get
his shoulder/arm healthy and his shot back. Yet win can be basis to build on. Curry and Marbury did fine. Not the blowout that Peaceman predicted, but a win is a win and I for one feel a bit better. LGK.

  51. ‘Lives’,

I do not believe that you can become a “TRUE” point in the League. N8 has a shooting guard’s game and
mentality. I root for Davids, vs. Goliath, but other then summer league when has N8 performed.
His best games last year was when Mardy was at the point and N8 at the 2. He did have a couple of 30 pt. games.
Making N8 into point is the equivalent of trying to put a square peg into a round hole. It does not FIT.
    Time will tell.

  53. We’ll see States. The Knicks’ system does not need a pure point during the entire game. They need ballers who know how to make decisions and handle a possession and run plays. Nate can do that. He is also a scorer. My concern is his defense. He has been doing a better job. We’ll see.

We spell it a little differently.

Good win today for the Knicks…hopefully we can use is a confidence builder.

Did anybody see the Lakers Boston game?

I predicted the Lakers would win…I was wrong.

However, I love it how Ray, KG and Paul all took a back seat to the Black Mamba that day.

Anybody remember last year when Kobe played in Boston and the Celtics fans started chantinig
Kobe, Kobe, Kobe and they even went as far as chanting MVP while Kobe was shooting free throws….LOL
    It was a beautiful thing.

Ray Allan looked lost trying to guard him.

All of the “Boston’s Big Three” all of a sudden turned into big babies cause Kobe started getting the

How I wish he was on my favorite team….

Hopefully, he’ll come to his senses someday.

We finally had our ENTIRE TEAM today and it showed by us defeating these chumps.

  62. Good point Orange in #47.
That pick-n-roll looks to be hopw everything starts on the O. Passing out of the double team needs to be worked on in practices. 10 TOs from the bigs is a major hole when the FTs are not falling.

    Harlem,
I saw that quote too and then it lead me to the reaction you may have seen in the last thread. Then I thought about how the MSM works, they will bring some “Quote” to your ears and then stick a mic in your face. They want the drama to make the papers sell.

I watched the game today and watched what the cameramen wanted me to see. What I saw is that the players were pressing flesh and supporting one another from giddy-up jump street. The players came on the court in the final seconds for the tip-off in unisom. Stephon is showing he is C and has EVERYONE’s ears.

Zeke was seated for virtually the whole game. As a player, you don’t want to see the coach all nervous, standing and berating while you’re trying to do your thing. In the huddle, Stephon sticks around to make sure he is in sync with the coach. On game day, at least from what I saw today, these two cats recognize that they’re in this thing TOGETHER and the MSM (and most fans) would love a peak of their real relationship and exchange.
Stephon played the way IT wants him to play and with the W he will be more amenable going forward. IT also took the extra shots away from JCrawful today. When Jamal is on, he is AWESOME. When he’s off, he is AWFUL and starts to chuck up shots which is why I subscribed to the name JChuck. The NYK should develop multiple entry points to the post and then continue to move for the open J as the pass goes in. That is the only way to overcome the double-team, avoid being too predictable, and making the other 3 guys participants in the game instead of spectators.

Statesman, I agree that N8 is a liability who overdribbles. It could be his height and hand-size preventing him from feeling the right moment to release the ball from the perimeter. I still say that we would not be too bad off if we had two styles of play. IT knows what’s good so he’ll put in another offense prolly when the fellas has this inside-outside thing down-Pat(rick Ew). N8 is, however, the right PG to come in for a foul-plagued Meburry (when he’s off his game). N8 has more O skills, is better on the boards, and provides more energy than the gimpy Mardy Collins.

Clearly Q’s O is OFF however he’s a GAMER contributing to the W in any way that he can. I mean REALLY, 16 boards and 4 dimes? That’s what Z-bo need to recognize as part of TEAM play. He commands the ball on the O-side and takes every shot whether they’re falling in or not. He should transform into a feeder of the post, rebounder and setting the pick or providing help D when his O is OFF.

IT had a 10-man rotation today. They only took 72 shots which is anemic for a team with poor perimeter D. We will know that the D has improved when there are several shot-clock violations. I think we’ve had 3 all season. My cup is half-full and when we win, it runneth over. Let’s stay in that drink fellas.

  65. Yeah General but he was wrong about so much else.
He was wrong for trying to get IT’s job by losing on purpose and playing 42 different starting line-ups. He was wrong for using the MSM against his own guys and the MSG policy instead of just talking to them like men. He was wrong about asking for Francis saying he was a better PG than Marburry and thus had thetrade endorsed for with Ariza whom he thought was “delusional”. He was wrong for telling Dolan that he never asked for Francis in a trade. He was wrong about so many things that some here just refer to him as the HOF ABS coach. The ABS is mine with all due respect to the HOF.

On this day Stephon was Starbury instead of Meburry so we exhaled because he made the right decisions. I’ve got to believe that he can play this way for the next two years and then let him go off to his next stage of his life wherever that may be. 75. Glad to get this win under our belts. Utah won’t be easy.

I think Steph played like a leader today.

I was talking with my brother-in-law about Steph.

I did not know he donated Starbury sneakers to ALL the boys high schools in NYC.Just for that he will get a pass from me as a person, not a basketball player.

It also makes you think, that Steph is taking big money away from Nike,Reebok,Jordans and the other big name sneaker makers. That there is another reason to dog the brother.

Steph is no angel………but, Micheal Jordan,Larry Bird and Magic Johnson DID NOTHING to help stop the killings, robberys in the streets over sneakers. They added to it!!!

A pair of Jordans……over $100.00, and if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, you would get jacked for your sneakers.

If Steph did nothing else in life, he did more than most people to stop killing, fighting over sneakers. He did something. What has Peter Vecsey,Marc Berman,Mitch Lawrence and other done to help, other than writing destroying words on Steph……again Steph is no angel. But he did something!!

Maybe Jordan,Bird,Magic and others did things we don’t hear about. But when you think that what Steph has done with the low price sneakers and other clothes, he may have saved many lives.HBO Real Sports did a spot on sneakers and violence with Steph a while back. Young kids are being killed, hurt, cut over this.

Steph’s idea stops the fighting over big $$$ sneakers.

For that, Steph is the man!

And the big brand names sneaker-makers will hate him for taking money out of their pockets. But they have done nothing to stop the violence their products cause. These Kids are the future Knicks,Lakers,Bulls of the NBA. There should be more people trying to help…….like Steph. He is not making a lot of money on this sneaker deal, maybe 3-6 dollars a pair.He is using his 19 million from the Knicks wisely.

    Thank you Stephon Marbury!

  80. Very interesting take D L T. You got me thinkin’ now that my adult beverage has dilluted.
Peaceman and Steady are often looking at the “‘nother story” as we NYers like to do from time to time. What if the whole Phoenix fiasco was about IT and Steph arguing about whether or not he should go back to NY to pay his final respects to his former coach and “father figure”? I don’t know what happened and neither do many of the MSM hacks writing about the story. If IT told him “You’re not starting today so I can give the team a jolt” and then Marbury takes it to mean, “Well I can go right back home and take care of my business with the fam then”. Then IT says, “Well you do what you gotta do”. And then the MSM takes it and runs a very sensational, inciteful story about a “Mebury” and not a Starbury. Hell, it even made Blogzilla (albeit appropriately) change his cloak to Knickdefense. Seems like the whole City turned on him. We were eating our innards here. Not those NYC kids you mentioned though D L T, they’ve got the gear and the gratitude. And then ballers like Arenas or LBJ laugh at Marbury because, in today’s market, Marbury is showing the world how glutonous and self-serving the pros can be continuing to contribute to the ills of the inner cities and the runaway consumerism. Marbury exposes them and their rose-colored Veil of Hypocrates. I hope that he can continue and that others pick up a similar campaign to help our inner city youths.

Peace or Police (was that you African or was that AKA Peace) that fighting over one brain cell line was a hoot.

Defenders, this is definitely a Peace rumor I would take seriously even with his well documented case of terminal OTP. Peace be sittin’ and spookin’ by the door. But Peace you did color that rumor kinda grey. Was suggesting that RonRon might request a trade similar to saying that SAC was ready to make a trade. If so. what do you think about Bibby coming this way too. Bibby is not Starbury, but the good part is that Bibby is not Starbury. If this is going to happen, I hope they make it quick instead of dragging it out like the Bulls did with the Kob situation.

If Starbury played like November didn’t exist, we wouldn’t need to be so harsh. DLT at #74: All that is what makes us laud Stephon and at the same time what makes us frustrated over recent events. Part of the value of his efforts is impacted by his persona as a marketed personality; some of his unnecessary acts help diminish the value of his efforts. Better discretion and decisionmaking is not too much to ask of the brother.

We did a lot of traveling: from an Awards Show to a Revolution Inspired migration, from the Daily Dump to Wacky Island to the Defender Fort of Fortitude. Those were the days.

And at #103, sharp catch Steady. Minnie’s at 1-10, cheating early in the season and we don’t see them again until Mar. 22, 2008. Stern trying to punish Boston during the megamillion drawing (Boston didn’t get the 1 or 4 spot)for tossing games late in the season got McHale’s attention. He already felt the sting of Stern’s extension cord when he was coveting Joe Smith, he doesn’t want to lose out this time. I didn’t think of it like this before, but he traded Garnett for Jefferson and a high lottery pick. That’s not too stupid. JUST BLOGGIN’

Can’t believe Boston is 11-1. Still 70 games to go though. Boston coulc still end up 11-71. HaHaHa. I guess not as long as Minnesota, Miami, Chicago aren’t part of the DLeague.

So we can only imagine what this has done for the psyche of OUR TEAM and the COACHING STAFF. Confidence is an interesting spiritual attribute…

If the TEAM just happens to Peek through the Back Door every now and again, they will recognize OUR commitment to them, each other, and our fellowman. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Knickdefense.com should be REQUIRED READING FOR THIS TEAM…

  124. I’ve been following today’s thread relating to the good deeds from the players on our beloved team. It’s an interesting conversation about how the team in terms of their off the court contributions are deserving of better karma or fortune.

Sadly if any of us were part of the flock, the johnny come latelyfan and those whose fandom attaches to strings accesible to the lesser puppet masters of the press soap opera plots, then we might come to think that the players ont his team are very deeply deserving of ill fortune and bad karma. Look deeper to what is aptly here called the “veil of hypocrites” and we’ll see that the dark hearts of those who desire this teams demise are the same type of trolls that would treat phenomena which they can’t understand with the derision of whishing that phenomena and all associated with, with an incurable disease. Moreover the ogres behind the veil of hypocrites the proceed to take a knife to the festering wounds they themseleves have whished upon their prey.

I for one as well as many Defenders here applaud the MSG media policy. Why? The most important reason for me is that given the seriously skewed and tabloid nature of the MSM why would anyone allow such yellow “journalist” access to sound bites that these “reporters” have time and again readily stretched and besmirched beyond belief. Second I am not the turn the other cheek type and I can appreciate that proverbial FU to the MSM hacks that Dolan gives out with his stone wall media policy.

That said these MSM hacks have shown their ineptness as reporters for going like flies on shit to the cheapest story instead of taking the time and resources to assess what other stories or reason might contextualize the subject matter of their work. Case in point, only a week after a Minnesotta area paper- and the somewhat respectable NY Times– published a story regarding the death of Marbury’s mentor did the Daily Skewed follow up with such a story themselves. But of course the damage had already been done, and the team was in the mire of yellow influence chaos.

One would think that given an absence of access these “reporters” would work harder than merely starting every critical story with “rumor has it,” “an undisclosed source says” etc, etc. Shit makes me vomit do some work and follow all angles not only the bad. No! But to do that would be like these ogres doing as they should do instead as how they say.

  130. Peaceman you said:

Yeah you are right. It’s a tough thing and one that all should be sensitive about. That is why I took great care not to use the term Renal.

this is one of those type of days. I just had an employee misprocess something that I said innocently in response to a question. The person processed my reply in a way that I totally did not mean in my response. Reversing the perceived damage was akin to hugging a mirage it became more difficult and unfulfilling to do. 131. Peaceman said that he missed Barf’s on line commentary and peiodic posts on the running score to Knick games. Theee
is a way to access the running score by:

    (1) Go to the ESPN web site at http://www.espn.com
    (2) At the ESPN page, hit NBA
    (3) At the NBA page, hit “Scoreboard”
    (4) At the Scoreboard page, find the current Knick game.
    (7) Click on the current game review.
    (8) At the review page, hit “Play by Play.”

Barf’s running commentary is actually more fun. LGK

  134. True dat St_George,
We’re not laughing at the critical nature of the condition. My aim was to look at some homeopathic cures like I know many are available in the old country. In fact, during my research, many homeopaths (which I know you too follow Peaceman) suggest that a homeopathic treatment begin prior to any transplant or more invasive cure or procedure. There are some herbals or homeopatic cures online but I trust them less than what I would have found myself if I was still on terra ferma in the motherland. I’m certain that her family is putting all sorts of energies and resources to resolving the problem. While in Nairobi this summer, it would have been useful (for Ron Ron) to speak to the elders there because this condition is not new to this world. Though it is a very painful condition, some patients living and managing the symptoms/conditions related to it (the adults at least) have resorted to humor as therapy. On this I’m serious, there may be a relation to all the muscles. You know how excessive laughter brings on the senstation to P? I $#!+-you not. Go figure!

Not viewing it as pennance St_George, the humanly Defender response is to simply DO SOMETHING wherever or whenever your inner spirit tells you that something needs to be done. E’riting is saaafe ;-)

  135. Here’s a little nugget from Hoopsworld:

There was a running joke which made its rounds from one end of the Mile High City to the other last season which noted the team should actually be called the “Enver Nuggets” since there was absolutely no “D” in last year’s rendition of the Denver Nuggets. While most fans got a quick chuckle out of the punch-line, head coach George Karl wasn’t laughing. Karl came into the 2007-08 campaign determined to get his team to play better defense.
The results were mixed in the early season. After an emotional loss to the New York Knicks dropped the Nuggets to 2-2, the team traveled to Boston and was annihilated by the Celtics in a game in which they trailed by 39 points at the half. At that moment, it looked like Karl’s message might have been falling on deaf ears.

“We caught (Boston) after a game in New York that took a lot out of us,” Karl told HOOPSWORLD recently. “It took a lot out of our coaching staff and the people in our organization. We really wanted to win that game. So you go into Boston and you think you’re ready, you think you’ve got the tank full, and you run into this beast. I don’t think I’ve ever been down 39 at half-time. I think that was a first in my life.”

Karl called the loss one of the worst of his coaching career. When I brought Allen Iverson up to speed on what Karl had said about the loss, Iverson replied: “That’s crazy because that’s the worst one I’ve been a part of in my 12 years, too.”

  137. The crazy thing is; as much as the Knicks are derided for lack of D (and rightly so) there are very few teams in the NBA have any defensive focus. I am not sure if the new NBA rules make it difficult to play solid D, or the modern day baller just doesn’t value D. teams like the SA Spurs, Pistons and lately the LA Lakers appear to be the teams most committed to playing defense. This probably explains why SA and DET are getting the bling. What I don’t understand is SA and Det have proven that D wins jewels. Why aren’t more teams taking defense seriously. During the Ewing/Oakley era they said it made for boring basketball but teams were winning with it. In today’s eESPN highlight era there seems to be more glitz but less substance.

All this N-othing B-ut A-ctors highlights only league must be frustrating to real ballers who leave it on the floor every night like AI or KG. I wonder why MSM aren’t talking more about the league itself which is responsible for not selling a substantive product to the fans even though the fans are paying more. From my observations down here in the EC the league is not as exciting as when Ewing was doing and Michael was doing and good D along with a great game plan ruled. We understand the need for glitz, Phoenix has a lot of Glitz, Dallas has Glitz, Golden State has Glitz but 3 out of the previous 4 NBA championship teams have proven you need a balance of D & glitz. Why don’t coaches/players/teams understand this?

I was wondering if you were going to or would be interested in doing a comparative analysis of the News coverage fromother NBA cities in which the local NBA team has gotten of to a less than stellar start despite “high expectations.” Is so just recall that the local Knick “BEAT wrongers writers” all predicted the Knicks would finish under 500. So here then why all the fuss. If you do such a comparaison let us know how the slow starts are covered? Are injuries pointed out? Are other factors taken into account? Especially interesting would be a comparison of the takes by the respective columnist.

  139. Anti, yep, I’m a sci-fi fan in general…St_George, defense is relative. Back in zeke’s day, good D meant holding a team to 75-80 points, nowadays, that number’s been bumped to something around 90 (the ole first team to 100 usually wins, rule)…O&B, i think all those teams, except rockets, have in their favour some history of overcoming bad starts. bulls fans patience however may have run its course.

“i think all those teams, except rockets, have in their favour some history of overcoming bad starts. bulls fans patience however may have run its course.”

Pointed noted but would the Miami story be different in the sense that they have one “superstar” and a fading “superstar” now merely “star” level talent in Shaq?

The knicks don’t have a player with an NBA officiating favorable forcefield the likes of Dwayne “you touch me it’s a foul” Wade!

Also a valid point can be made that the Nets are a deeper and more talented team than the team that won back to back Eastern Conference Titles. Perhaps in an improved East it won’t translate to a juggernaut early season record but the team has been mediocre since Frank’s been at the coaches helm.

Rockets can no longer blame Van Gundy for holding them back.

I am getting the impression that the MSM has caught a good wif of the substance of your Book of Isiah. I listen to BSPN to sour my liver and give me indigestion after a knicks loss– my way of doing penance for wasting my time watching a game ending in a loss.

BSPN now seems to put forth the conceded point that Thomas has brought talented players to teh Knicks but that he fails miserably in bringing in players that “mesh” fit together that are seamless fits, etc. etc.

  147. Defenders,

It is always so comical to read the ranting and raving of NYMSM hacks that were and are as athletic as a Thumb Tack. I believe it is today’s NY post, that shows a photo of a young kid holding a sign saying ‘I am ashamed to be a Knick Fan’ but the young lad is wearing a Knick Jersey…Talk about Skullduggery…VERY SILLY…

I myself Defenders, tend not to read most articles, because the writers don’t have access so they make it up as they go. I’d rather rely on my lying eyes…LOL

Also, I know this will ruffle some Defender feathers, but the changes in the rules to loosen up the game on the defensive end has not necessarily made the game more exciting. The Magic/Bird era until the conclusion of the Jordan era, the game thrived, it was as exciting game and the league built its brand on the back of players that were rough and tumbled, that took good shots, and gave plenty. The DREAM TEAM was made up of players that appreciated physical play and took no prisoners…Who remembers Barkley’s behavior in the Olympics. Let’s cut to chase here. That brand and style of Basketball was dominated by players of color, except for those ballers in Beantown (McHale, Bird, Ainge, Chirs Ford, and Roby, were straight up thuggers on the court, and you had to respect them for that; remember the close-line jammy jam on Worthy in the Finals). The BEST BALLERS DURING THAT ERA WERE Brothers due to the physicality required. Athletes became the flava of the day and BBALL skill was an option. But the majority of the audience had changed, and the shirt and tie crowd could not and would not be ignored. I personally dig Mr. Nash’s game, but in that era, he would have never won an MVP. I think Stockton was better, and he never did, but he was one tough SOB on one tough azz team. Also, during this time the rise of 24 hour sports coverage was in its infancy and it too has changed the perceptions of the masses with its Highlight focused snippets and entertainment slant, which makes offense all the craze. Today we see a bit more balance, but more so in the other sports verses BBALL. Don’t recall the last time BSPN showed the best defensive plays of the night for basketball; I could go on but I’ll stop here…All I know, THE MAN WITH THE GOLD MAKES THE RULES…Once again, I am not looking for confirmation, nor am I looking for agreement. Say what you will, but IMHO everything is this country is based on Race and Class, and the last time I checked, it hadn’t changed…Just bloggin

  156. Anti-NYSN,
    You know what’s good.

    Cooleyhigh,
Any reasonable person old enough to get online and read this blog should know that everything in the USA is dominated by race and class. Even an unreasonable person who want to dismiss the notion of race and class in American sports need only look at the recent HGH controversy in MLB. Reasonable or unreasonable, unless that person is still stuck in Desert Storm, s/he will conclude that race and class transcends all spheres in American life. If anything, Katrina hoisted the Veil of Hypocrates from Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty. Our nation is exposed. Worst yet, people like the Archbishop of Canterbery is now saying that America has lost its moral high ground since the 9/11/01 attacks on Iraq and Afghanistan. The MSM bought the Presidential bunk hook-line-and-sinker without any of the scrutiny, inquiry and critical thinking that we now see being applied to a basketball team after less than 15 games in an 82-game season. Shame on the MSM.

    Defenders,
I often chuckle at the posters on blogs who type “can we just talk about basketball and skip this race and class business?” I just chuckle because not talking about race and class would make the game less accessible to the common fan. The suits are taking over the games folks–NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL. Look at what the NFL did this week putting a PT game on the NFL Network (whether you get it or not). I see many fans rushing to the game right after work so there’s no time to get out of suits and into their favorite paraphanilia. There are certainly fewer of us who can even step up to the exhorbitant ticket and concession prices anymore. The MSM including BSPN will be the common fan’s last resort to accessing the games. It is VITAL that they act and do right by us else we will be bamboozled just like the ones hoodwinked into kamikaze 6 years ago. These guys are dangerous with their ink, vitriol, and hyperboles. Stay vigilant and defend your passions. And when faced with an obvious injustice, don’t just sit there–DO SOMETHING.

Let the karma flow for a win against Utah. Boozer is a beast so we need to take to the body early. Maybe we can send Malik in for the six-quick-fouls ;-)

Williams as he did against Ben Gordon, the Jazz can be contained. Carlos Boozer is another matter. He is averaging 25 pts. per game. Neither Curry nor ZBo should commit excessive fouls trying to stop him. Let Boozer commit fouls trying to stop them. knicks can absorb Boozer’s 25 pts., but Williams and Kirilenko must also be contained.

  160. DEFENDER SCOUTING REPORT, Part I

The lamp has been rubbed the right way by a Knicks’ victory, so it is with great pleasure that I attempt a new scouting report for our game tonight against the Utah Jazz. I have added a video coordinator feature at the end for you armchair coaches. Let’s pretend I hired the next youthful video coordinator (like Mike Brown or Lawrence Franks) likely to become head coach.
Now you too can approach the game like an NBA coaches with full staffs. You really need to check out the Deron Williams remix. Wow. Just to renew some hope and remind us of the possibilities, I may also add a Stephon Marbury remix tape as a supplement to this report.

    Enjoy.

CAN KNICKS AVOID SOUR NOTE AGAINST JAZZ?

This question will cause Knicks Fanatics to begin biting their nails, like parents listening to their kids at their first piano recital, Sunday night: After such beautiful orchestration against the Bulls (a win is beautiful), will our NY Knicks avoid hitting a sour note against the tough, Northwest Division leader, Utah Jazz (10-4)? It is too easy to answer “Hell Naw.” But, we are Knicks Defenders, vigilant and faithful. We like winning.

Yes, winning felt so good, even against the fragile Bulls, beaten into submission by a combination of tactless Scott Skiles and the disruptive tactile feeling of Kobe’s reach into the United Center. It reminded us that the Knicks could win and that while they are in the bottom third of the Eastern Conference, today (Sunday morn) they are only three games out of contention for a playoff spot and their record confirms that they are better off than Chicago and Miami. Even better, there are 70 games to make good on that pre-season promise seen by the Defender Fanatics.

The Knicks’ next task is a tall, tall order. While they will face a team that the Knicks were designed to pummel, the methodical and talented Utah Jazz have recently exhibited every winning trait that the Knicks have been struggling to show us. Winning this game will be tough, but not impossible with a lot of effort and some long missing MSG luck. The Knicks need to play some damn near perfect ball, similar to how they played earlier in the season. The luck may come with Utah visiting the Mecca 27 hours after playing and beating the Rasheedless Pistons; very hungry Knicks, guided by a good game plan, might be able to pull this one off.

Last year the Knicks split the two game series with Utah. The Knicks, with only eight players after the brawl suspension, won the first game 97-96 on a beautiful last second overtime layup by Starbury and lost the second in February 104-102, also in overtime. We face Utah again on January 30, 2008.

(And how sweet would it be to have regained our confidence in time to face the Boston Jovial Green Giants?)

    MEET THE UTAH JAZZ

    Overview of the JAZZ

At the time of this writing the Jazz are 10-4 (the stats for the Detroit victory are not included in all of the analysis here). They score 106.8 points per game and allow only 100.1 per game. They average 97 possessions per game and turn the ball over 18% of the time. Their fg% is 48%. Utah is primarily a jumpshooting squad heavily reliant on ball movement and assists. Sixty-six percent of their points come off assists. Their offense normally runs (11-12 seconds) deeper into the shoot clock than their opponents.

Their defense is pretty decent. Opponents average 98 possessions and turn the ball over 18% of the time and average 46% in field goal shooting. They average 30.9 free throw attempts per game and hit only 76%. Defensively, the Jazz seem to force teams to take jump shots as opposed to allowing them to play an inside game.

Utah is a good rebounding team, but should be greatly challenged by New York’s rebounding corp.

    The Coach

Arguably the best coach in the league, even without a Championship, over an extended period of time. Admittedly I am biased because Jerry Sloan, the Bulls very 1st draft choice in the 1966 expansion draft, was a key to those Chicago Bulls teams of my childhood and I patterned my defensive game after this 6-time defensive team selection. My imitation resulted in getting street nicknames like “The Fly,” (flypaper was too long),“Terminator,” and just plain “Sir Hack-a-lot.” That was the same Jerry Sloan that Isiah loved watching and emulating. Now that was a player. Just ask Frazier.

A solid team in the mold of Jerry Sloan, unquestionably one of the best and least discussed coaches in the NBA. I can hear my own drool over his accomplishments, but Insidehoops.com doesn’t even rank him in the top 11 or for honorable mention. They rank George Karl, Scott Skiles and Flip Saunders over him. That’s a testimony to ignorance, for sure.

Check it out. Twenty-two seasons as a coach. 16 consecutive winning seasons until 2004-2005. 17 seasons in the playoffs. .600 regular season winning percentage. Only .497 (87-88) in the playoffs though. Unlike most coaches, has built squads from the ground up. Yeah, I like this guy. Understated. Underrated.
