“I love all my players, just like my mother loved me, but sometimes she snatched me out of the park and had tough words for me and did some tough things to me,” the New York Knicks coach said after Marbury rejoined the team for Wednesday’s night game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Thomas, asked about playing Marbury instead of suspending him, said, “I’ve played with people I don’t like and I’ve won with people I don’t like. We’re a professional basketball team and my job is trying to win a game. Whatever happened in the past is in the past. We move forward.”
Although Cleveland star LeBron James said he doesn’t know Marbury, he was critical of his just taking off from the Knicks.
“I couldn’t have a guy like that on my team,” James said before the Cavaliers’ 117-116 overtime loss to Orlando.

DLT as you may recall during an exchange with JohnQ–my cup runneth over. I support your formulation that a 20-game assessment is most reasonable. Zeke had put the barometer/gauge at 10 games. I for one was expecting for him to put the defensive sets in the pre-season but I guess he will blame not doing so on him being in trial. I’m not buying that because Herb, Dave, et al were there. He let Malone and Dick Harter sign elsewhere. He’s got a capologist in Glen G and he’s the last man standing as the Apologist. Just bloggin’ but I don’t think Dolan buys any of it at the end of this year. My concern is when I see MSM incite fans to boo in their dailies and keep people talking about what they write/post/blog about. I’ll read the information and consider the source.
Look at FrankIsolated–after landing that great scoop he goes on to ABS about how the media should be given more access. Why doesn’t he go to DC and ask DOJ for more access to the prisoners in Guantanamo? And then stay there! He could bring Boils Berman with him and work on that goiter and pouch they’re carrying. They could lose the weight prison-style.

Steady,
Doing your moniker justice. Keeping it steady, keeping it real.
All this Marbury and Isiah nonsense is going to be water under the bridge once the dusts settles.
Knicks do have a winning team—we all see it! Don’t fret, defenders.
If the knicks would’ve won last night game, we probably would be reading different things from us Defenders.
As it is, from what we are hearing from Isiah Thomas is very telling:
1. He’s saying that he don’t want the same kind of games being played like last year; that this year got to be better.
2.He expects leadership from Marbury and with the whole team,a winning attitude—defensively mostly, then that what seems to come more easily, offensively.
3.The message is clear that his Job is on the line, and he have no time for anybody to not perform in a way that shows that each player is trying hard to win.
I personally see the Knicks being all right and playoff bound. If u ask me after the Knicks next lost, I’ll tell u the same. Just look at the rest of the teams in the east right now.
If someone would told us the Bulls would only have one win, as well as Miami(thanks Knicks)we wouldn’t believe them. Nets got ko’d by Boston twice. we can fare better against Boston then most people will allow themselves to believe.
When the Knicks hit that groove—there’s going to be no stopping them. U watch and see.

I remember me and you talking about how we would be good with the Knicks at or around 500 at the end of Novemeber and about our concerns with intergrating Zach and getting our defense up to speed. Good reminder.
Hey Defenders
As BARF noted, although I agree with most of yall that Steph done did botch this thing up good with his MEbury attitude, I think that perhaps Zeke allowed Mebury to get to close to him and as a result might of tried– like a little ABS– to use that knowledge to his advantage.
There is a tragedy behind this recent fiasco, that the near sighted grubs in print ink and paper, just don’t see. Again if there is any validity to the story that Dinglebury figuratively had shit on Zeke, Zeke made a mistake by letting that Me first punk to close into his affairs.
However, the confidence and trust Zeke afforded Stephon might have been the natural result of his prior experiences. Just recall that Thomas was formerly the coach of the Pacers and that during that tenure he gained the trust and respect of his players. The loyalty of Thomas former players to are well documented. Also well documented is his strength in dealing with younger players and having the willingness to develop them. As one of the ultimate players coaches Isiah’s hubris in believing he could trust the perenial reclamation project Stephon Marbury, has resulted in another black eye for the Knick franchise. What next? What lessons or impediments will this present for the Coach GM on the proverbial hot seat?
Will this episode result in a Coach/GM who is even further gaurded from his players?
I certainly hope not. What I can hope for with regards to the lessons Zeke should learn from this experience is not that it is wrong to trust. Rather I hope that Zeke understands that while a healthy distance is needed there are other means by which he can inculcate his experiences upon his students on the hard wood. Analogies, but not self references.

don’t you guys just get the impression that the MSMs version of the BSPN highlight real is the muck and mire of a sleazy story more disturbing in its ability to destroy and undermine the subject of the story than informative or penetrating.
If you want insight into the human dimension behind such displays the NY MSM is not the place to go. They are your talentless bottom feeders who have to scrub the shit off the players bathroom stalls to get any “DIRT” or “SHIT” on others. But unlike janitors what they does not result in a cleanliness rather they smear their shit like retarded children all over the walls and places were one lives and breaths. Society is what I mean.
BOO on the NY MSM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yea Steady
I agree the Cleveland, Orlando,Miami and LAC are games we had in our hands and blew it.There’s your 6-1 record. The problem is closing out these games with solid defense. The 3′s at end of the Cleveland game,The defense on Jwillaims vs Miami, and missing 17 shots in a row last night are things this team can overcome. We need to find the right set of 5 guys who can d-up. If it means playing FJones,Q,Balkman and whoever else…that’s what IT needs to figure out.I believe he will. He has to!!
Please don’t hurt em’……..we out!
Who woulda thunk it. Dallas is puttin’ a whuppin’ 2 nite on Team America with Mr. Fundamentals. And BSPN’s “Nollinger” has the NYK ranked higher than NJ, Miami, Indiana, Chicago, and the list goes on and on. Go figure. Steady as IT goes.
You know what’s good DLT.

Steady, DLT, O&B, Anti, Peaceman, even Chuck FM, all the defenders, you guys are lifting me up during this knicks adversity. even the guys who are saying blow up the team, I know you’re right there watching the games just like I am.
it is too early to give up on the season, and isiah should shuffle the deck and see if something else gets more W’s. experiment one: bench marbury. let’s give it a try once mardy comes back and everyone is healthy and see what happens. i’d say experiment two, if it has to come to that is to bench crawford for basically the same reasons, but the scientific approach is to isolate one variable, isolate the isolation one-on-one players!
still can’t get that fred jones turnover out of my mind stepping out of bounds when he caught it…
I have a question for everyone. If Steph and IT actually came to blows on the plane, can his contract be voided ala Latrell Spreewell ? Isn’t that attacking your coach ? I have 0 respect for this man right now and would like to see him away from what I think is a team w/ real potential.
Please weigh in.
JohnQ,
Let go. Let God.
KFLL
kumbaya yourself its a valid question.
how is it valid but you dont know for sure that it happened?
validity doesn’t go with rumor.
when there’s concrete info, we’ll discuss it. until then, why waste time speculating. obviously, steph’s not latrell and isiah isn’t carlesimo.
isiah doesn’t have an assistant job waiting for him alongside popovich. too much to lose for those two to be a snitch.
so its really not a valid question.
C Webb wants to start if he signs with the Magic. I didn’t realize he is no longer on the pistons.

I’ve never seen so many hysterical ‘defenders’ in my life. You people couldn’t defend your sandwich from a cockroach. You make me laugh. I think you are more shaken up then the Knicks are. One thing you don’t seem to understand is that with all the money involved no one is going anywhere for a while, the team is not dissapearing and everybody will have to play basketball and start winning some games. And they will do that. Next week this will be old news just like ABS is today. Mediea has you by the balls.
by the way, grant hill is back.
i really underestimated his signing during the offseason. i knew it was a good signing…but now, it looks like a great signing. he’s smart, efficient and re-energized.
its good to see him have a real shot at finishing out his career in style.
i wonder if alan houston would consider playing there too.
Defenders:
I wish the Knick players and coaches would read this blog and maybe, along with Cooley’s prayers, some inspiration and intensity would set in.
Winning tomorrow night against Sacramento is essential. Will ZBo play in the Sacramento game? His grandmother’s funeral is tomorrow. If not, they will struggle; and the Denver game will be a harder back to back
contest. Yet if the Knicks can reach 500 by Thanksgiving, things will get better. LGK
I didn’t (personally) SEE H20 play this summer so I’m still unresolved on whether he can still burn or not BARF. I’m still holding out hope that he can be a February addition. Missing 17 jumpers in a row like they did in LA is deplorable. For one thing, it suggests that the team was leaving the construct as IT described it to the fans in the MSM–we will play an inside outside game. I’m sure that if H20 took 5 of those 17, at least 3 would have gone in. The Q elbow script and his anemic shooting combined with the showcased JChuck give me hope that H20 could also come back and finish in style. Then again, I need to SEE for myself before I blog since IT and H20 are the pros and most qualified to determine what’s good in this instance.
And another thing…By now, JChuck should know that the carry/palm will be called on him. They created that rule for HIM. The leagued used tapes of his handles when describing to the refs what to look for when they call it. He’s a marked man but he continues to hurt the team with that very bad And-1 habbit.

Steady, I wonder if the league is watching Bowen’s stick-the-feet-under move as closely as they’re watching crawford’s palming violation.
maybe one day we’ll do a poll on weather pat ewing traveled with that move he did across the lane. i would vote no, but would understand why some people might vote yes it was.
post-up-prince,
i’ll take .500 by thanksgiving any day! 2-5 right about now. if we learn not to dig an early hole, then we’ve learned how to play .500+ basketball.
Post-up, Maybe Boomann or Cooley can have their peoples verify if the funeral will be at 11 am. If customs/traditions follow, the wake/viewing was tonight. If the funeral is in the AM then Z-Bo could realistically hop on a 2pm flight or have the JD charter scoop him up and take him to Sac town. I would believe that at least Steve Mills or some NYK brass will attend the funeral as a show of support–at least that’s what I would do if I replaced the ABS in the MSG. Does anybody else have the connects or know what’s good with Zach to Cali in the AM?
BTW, I think they lurk here; everyone does. Anti- called Stephon and gave him the address. MSG has popped in one time. Blogzilla knows what’s good.
Howdya like the first showing of EZ-22 posting their 1st double-double in LA. Many more of those to come if they stay 2gether. Just bloggin’.
KFLL
Blogzilla,
When I played ball, I was coached to “play the whistle”. So on that Ewing play, there was no whistle so there was no foul/travel. The league was different then and certain guys had “their” moves that Nunn et al. let them get away with. I would believe that the league is looking at Bowen just like they looked at Kobe with that backswingin’ arm after release. Kobe knows it’s dirty and unnecessary. Bowen does too. If allowed to continue, he could end someone’s livelihood with that cheap $#!+.
BTW blogzilla, I hope you did not succumb to group think or peer pressure by changing your handle. Whether Anon, Anonymous, Star or Starfan–you’re still Blogzilla to me. King of the F’n hill and the host with da most. Thanks again for this forum. You know what’s good.

atlanta’s got a few injuries but are surprisingly deep:
Even without Smith and Law, who helped stake Atlanta to a 63-48 halftime lead, the Hawks were able to rotate bodies to keep the tempo to their liking.
“They’re a deep team,” Bobcats coach Sam Vincent said. “They can take one 6-8 athletic shooter out and come in with another, and another, and another. When a team is that deep and they have that many guys that can go, it makes it tough for you to come in and match up.”
Discussion of a possible trade involving Portland again. Marbury for Darius Miles and Raef LaFrentz:
Well, that’s certainly an idea (one which, I might add, my man Kyle here in the OregonLive.com offices sent me yesterday). ESPN’s Trade Machine says it’s cool. Basically (and let me know if I’m wrong here, you salary cap gurus) the benefit for the Blazers is getting rid of Darius Miles’ contract a year earlier by pairing his $9 million a year with Raef’s $12.7 million in exchange for Marbury’s $22 million. The result of all this being the Blazers have an extra $9 million to spend on free agent or agents when the 2009-2001 season rolls around. They’d also pick up a roster spot for a guy like … Joel Freeland!
Of course, the rub is that you have to take Stephon Marbury. I think the conventional wisdom here is that the Trail Blazers (re: Paul Allen) would simply buy-out the remaining years on Starbury’s truly insane deal, but that’s a whole lot of money, even for a guy like Allen. Marbury is supposedly set to make $20+ million this year and near $22 million next year, and it would be hard to imagine Marbury taking less, as his prospect for latching onto another team seem slim. And I could be wrong, but he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’s in it to win a championship by latching onto a title contender.
With the Wiz winning two straight, they are now 2-5 like the Knicks. Coach Jordan thinks the first few games hit the team’s weaknesses:
“You’re missing Etan, you’re missing Pecherov, so that’s a 7-footer and a physical force down there,” Jordan said. “And when you look at the league, there are some large shooting guards and large small forwards, and those first few games it felt like we were dwarfed out there at times. [The bigger lineup] allows us to protect the rim, protect the paint, but we can still have skill guys out there at the three, four and five spots with Antawn, Darius and Andray.”
Butler, who has been the team’s most consistent player so far, could be a key to the upcoming stretch of games. He came out with energy and hustle while scoring 14 of his season-high 25 points in the first quarter Wednesday night and plans to take the same approach tonight against the Timberwolves.
“I have to go out there and make it my business to set the tone,” Butler said.
This New York Knicks 2007/08 campaign is under way, the war has started, so far we are suffering some early setbacks, but we must not despair. Lets not forget our goal this season is to get back into the playoffs, so collectively (players & fans) we must stay focus, keep the energy for our team as positive as it has been last summer during the off season. The fight right now is against ourselves, we are a talented team, can compete with every team in the NBA; Our Losses has been gifts to the other team, we must make them earn the ‘W’ not just give it to them, this was a major problem last year and it has haunted us the last 4 games. We must take better care of the basketball every possession, in every game, and execute at the offensive end, convert the easy layups, then take advantage at the free throw line. Two more games to go on this West Coast trip before we head on back home; so in the words of our Coach, let scratch out two wins.
Thanks steady and others for staying positive. I know that nobody wants to keep hearing this, but it is a marathon. Does anybody remember how horrible a November Marbury had last year? The December brawl? let’s put forth some positive karma to swing this ship back on track…
I’m keeping faith, but we better beat SAC!!!
Chaos is the best opportunity for creative excellence.
When problems fester untreated we expect resolutions to simply happen, but when problems burst like a sore and exposed they command our attention and demand solutions.
IT IS ALL GOOD. LGK.

Up Close with Eddy Curry

Adjust font size:
When Eddy Curry was drafted with the fourth pick of the 2001 NBA Draft as the future hope of the Chicago Bulls organization, it was clear that Chicago had given up on trying finding the Jordan-esque superstar player to bring the team out of Michael Jordan’s shadow.
The kid selected two picks before him was a wiry string bean from Compton, California; Curry had grown up in the tough neighborhoods of Harvey, Illinois — just south of downtown Chicago.
Then the Bulls orchestrated an immediate trade that would send beefy rebounder and scorer Elton Brand to L.A. for that string bean, Tyson Chandler.
The Bulls had the 2nd and 4th picks of the 2001 NBA Draft on their roster.
Two kids from two tough cities, two tough backgrounds, and two stories of survival and success.
The Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon of the next generation … yet still trying to hold on to the past, as Curry wore No. 2 and Chandler wore No. 3 (when put together, it was ’23′).
However, both came directly to the NBA out of high school, their games far from polished. Both would have stretches where they met with success here and there, but neither was at the same time and it appeared as if this was a chemistry experiment gone awry.
How could the Bulls get these guys to work together cohesively, be on the same page?
The answer was never found and may have been part of the impetus (along with the draft busts that were Kwame Brown and Darius Miles) that led NBA Commissioner David Stern to impose the rule forbidding kids from jumping straight from high school to the NBA.
Curry was sent to New York along with Antonio Davis for Mike Sweetney, Tim Thomas and Jermaine Jackson after worries about a congenital heart condition and his perceived inability to play defense.
Chandler would flourish enough on his own to merit a long-term deal in the $63 million neighborhood later that same year, helping the Bulls run through the Celtics in the playoffs. However, when Ben Wallace became a free agent, Chandler was sent to New Orleans for J.R. Smith and P.J. Brown.
The Jerry Krause Era in Chicago was officially over.
In the two seasons since, Chandler and Curry have begun to establish their own unique identities on two very different teams. Not to the degree that separating Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, where each of those player have garnered MVP status; but their careers are finally evolving past the point of their height being the only intimidation factor.
Chandler is playing at a faster pace in New Orleans; Curry is muddled in New York confusion and chaos, but is establishing his own identity.
I had a chance to sit down and talk with Eddy Curry after he had gone to war against one of the premier centers in the league, Amare Stoudemire:
You and Tyson (Chandler) came to Chicago at the same time. Are you guys close? Have you kept tabs with Ty at all?
“Yeah, I talk to Tyson a lot over e-mail. I try to watch his games every now and then. I’m very proud of what he’s been able to do with the USA team and just with the way his career is headed. I’m extremely happy for him.”
The USA Basketball thing aside, you guys have both progressed along at a similar pace, at least with regard to success rate, and it has not been the rapid boom everyone expected when you came in together as draft picks. How tough has that been? Do you ever look back and ask yourself if that was the right decision (to jump from high school to the pros)? Because, really, right now you would be at the pinnacle of a collegiate career.
“I’m really happy with my decision. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I’m happy and comfortable with the position that I’m in with this team. Without bypassing college, it’s possible that I wouldn’t even have been here. You never know what would have happened. I’m just glad that I’m here now.”
Talk about your role on this team. Obviously, foul trouble tonight, but you have really come along in the last couple of years. Talk about how that evolution has gone.
“Really, it started in Chicago. I thought my last year in Chicago was a good year and it kind of catapulted me into the world I have right now. I’m just trying to be a dominant player on this team and be one of the pieces that help us start winning some games.”
At this time last year, Isiah (Thomas) had a glut of guards on this team. He made some smart moves over the summer to balance this team, and one of those was acquiring Zach Randolph. How happy were you at the news that you would have a guy of his caliber to help you out in the paint?
“I was extremely happy! He called me this summer right before he did it and was like, ‘You know there’s a possibility we might be able to get Zach,’ and I was like, ‘Oh man, if we can do that it would be incredible!’ I’ve known Zach since eighth grade and every time we’d play against each other, we’d talk about how cool it would be if we played on the same team. For it to really happen, it’s incredible. I almost don’t believe it. I definitely didn’t believe it until later on in the summer. He came in and we worked out together and I was blown away. I’m just extremely excited about the team that we have. I know that once everybody comes back, we can continue to jell and we’ll be a good team.”
Obviously, before this personal tragedy with his grandmother’s passing, you guys came out of the blocks rather well. The pre-season, the first couple of games, everybody was saying, ‘Wow, don’t discount the Knicks just yet.’ But now a couple things have happened, the Stephon (Marbury) situation being one of them, and it’s seeming like it’s old times … back to the turmoil again, and that success just disintegrated. Does this all take away from the fact that this could turn into a potentially lethal lineup?
“We may have fizzled out to a couple people. But to each other, we really feel like we have something special here. As soon as he gets back, we’re going to definitely try and pick up where we left off, try to string some wins together and try to get back on the right track.”
Once the Marbury situation works its way through, no matter the outcome, is it time for you to step up and lead this team? Are you the person to do it?
“Oh, definitely. Definitely. I like the position that I’m in. Isiah wants me to be the leader of this team. I want to be the leader of this team. And I’m going to do whatever it takes in order to fill that void. Whatever it takes. By any means.”
How tough was it going up against a guy like Amare Stoudemire? I mean, you are a bigger, more physical guy. He is a shade smaller, and maybe more wily and athletic. His play tonight kind of sucked you into six fouls and out of the game (Thomas kept Curry out the entire third quarter, to no avail; Curry would foul out just four minutes after being reinserted in the fourth quarter).
“It’s a tough match-up. But I think I’m a tough match-up for him. Yeah, I got into some foul trouble early. But I think if you take away a couple of those fouls and this game is a little bit closer. It’s a little bit more competitive. But we’ll see him again. They come to the Garden and I’ll definitely be ready for that game, Zach will be back, and hopefully Steph will be here if he gets that whole situation ironed out, and it will be a good time.”
What is the one glaring thing you think you need to improve upon?
“I don’t know. I’d like to think I’m always improving on everything. At first I might have maybe said rebounding. But I’m actively trying to pursue balls and trying to get better. Right now, I just don’t know. We keep losing. Take away those losses and I definitely feel like I’m getting better and better as a player.”
And better as a team.
The Knicks started out surprising a few people. Their inner demons surprise no one, and continue to haunt this team’s progress. Many blame Isiah Thomas. Some go as far back as Scott Layden.
The fingers can be pointed all day and night at management, ownership, and past ghosts. However, the players are the ones who are on the floor 82 nights per year.
Whether that goes beyond 82 is solely up to them. They have to make it work. They have to dictate and author their own successes.
If they are able to do this as a group or not remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, Eddy Curry seems to be on the right track … not bad for a kid who didn’t pick up a basketball until the 7th grade. According to his father, Eddy Curry Sr., “For a long time, Eddy hated basketball.”
It’s a pace he probably would have been on had he spent four years at a DePaul, but he’s on track nonetheless.
Still working fervently on his degree at the University of the NBA.

When you played the game of basketball,
1. What was Coach James Naismith a “nice guy?”
2. Did you guys Dunk on those “Peach Baskets?” lol
Heres a story that seems to corroborate Marbury’s absence being the result of taking time off to grieve the passing of a basketball mentor.
Here’s a portion of that article
“Robert Williams — a nursing-home manager by day and basketball mentors to hundreds by night and weekend — died of a heart attack at age 64 on Tuesday afternoon in his apartment next to the Garden court.
“If you looked outside the window of my room, right down there was the court,” Telfair said. “And Stephon’s room was right on top of my mine. I lived on the third floor, he lived on the fourth floor. I grew up five steps from there. I’d walk out of my building and step right onto the court.”
Nearly every time he took that court, there was Mr. Lou, who coached every great player who ever came out of Coney Island since 1971. Marbury and four of his brothers, Telfair and Sacramento Kings guard Quincy Douby are among the many.”

From John Olsteen…Live like a Champion (series)
I Am What God Says I Am
Have the words and opinions of other people caused you to water down your dreams? One of the most important things you can learn is that other people don’t set the limits for your life. Other people don’t have to believe in you in order for your dreams to come to pass. There will always be critics and naysayers. The negative voices come at everyone. But other people don’t determine your destiny, you do.
The Apostle Paul says in Romans 3:3, “What if they don’t believe? Will their lack of faith make the faith of God of no effect?” This verse is saying, “It doesn’t matter if other people don’t believe. Their unbelief is not going to keep me from believing in my dreams.” When God puts a promise in your heart, it’s not up to other people to bring it to pass, it’s up to you! You don’t need everyone to validate you. You don’t need to get confirmation from all your friends. You have to follow the voice of God for yourself and allow Him to order your steps. God sees the hidden treasures that you’ve had buried on the inside of you. He wants to bring those treasures out and make your dreams reality!
As you stir your faith up and water those seeds they will take root, and you will accomplish things that you never even thought possible! It doesn’t matter what negative things have been spoken over you in the past, God’s blessing is greater than any curse! Begin to speak words of life and faith over yourself. As you get rid of those old, defeated thoughts, and replace them with what God says about you, you will rise higher and live the abundant life God has in store for you!

A Mentor of Street Ball Dies, and a Missing Knick Appears
Yo Knicksdefense
Write up an article regarding the post by myself and syd @ post 134 and # 145.
It’s about the passing of Stephon’s mentor known as “Lou.”
It would make for a good thread to place some levity on the hysteria around the NYC MSM recently.
I’m out
This morning’s New York Times reports that Z-Bo is not going to play tonight against Sacramento because of attending his grandmother’s funeral and is doubtful for Saturday’s game against Denver. Yet ZBo was quoted as saying that his grandmother would have wanted him to play. If that is correct and if I were Isiah at this point, I would personally pay for a helicopter escort to fly ZBo to a stand by charter plane readay to get him to Sacramento ASAP. Even if ZBO only makes the 2nd half, it would help the team and send a message to his teammates about commitment to winning as well as being there for one another.
The media is attempting to sow disunity among the players as well as between the players and Isiah because of the Marbury episode–all in an
effort to pressure Dolan to fire Zeke immediately. As Benjamin Franklin once said: “We must all hang together lest we all
hang separately.” KFL
