Knicks get their first win of the season against T-Wolves

November 5, 2007 – 2:19 am

Hey, a win is a win, right? It wasn’t pretty at times, I admit. It didn’t continuously thrill like that Cavs game the other night, but we learned a little bit about this Knicks team, seeing them play together, what they need to work on, ect.

new_stats1.jpg

The guards had a great night statistically. Stephon had just one turnover to go with his 7 assists and 17 points. Crawford was doing his thing with those isolation plays, he finished with the game high 24.

I included this stats sheet for several reasons. We note that the back court did well tonight, yet even when our front court isn’t playing up to their potential, they’re still getting us 29 points and 17 rebounds. That’s on an off night. Q is looking like first-year-in-NY Q, and that’s not a good sign. Still, the combination of Curry and Randolph assures that somebody is going to show up on any given night. Imagine if everybody in the starting five showed up. That has yet to happen, but it could.

Now look at the bench. Three key guys, Nate, Lee and Balkman bring in the energy and basically carry us close to victory every night. Once Jeffries is back, Isiah will have his nine-man rotation that should match up with most of the teams in the eastern conference. David Lee needs more than 27 minutes on the floor, he’s just too good for this team to be held back like that.

The defense still isn’t what it ought to be, but I assume the Knicks will continue to work at it. It isn’t just one guy doing wrong out there, team defense has to improve through communication and going over the pick rather than under it. Isiah goes zone at times and I’m not convinced how effective that is thus far. I do think that we’ve been getting some nice fast-break opportunities and that is a good sign for the transition. Crawford wouldn’t be throwing lobs to Curry on the break if there wasn’t some kind of defensive play at the other end.

Finally, I want to point out two new statistical categories in this box score. I’ve been looking at box scores since the late 80’s, this is the first time I’ve seen two stats on there. Look at the column towards the right, next to blocks–what the heck is a “BA”? I’ve never heard of that. Also the “+/-” is new. I’m assuming these are fantasy stats because I’m not into that stuff. There must be money in those fantasy leagues for the NBA to change the format of their box scores. Maybe one of you guys could explain it to me. For all I know, it is some kind of John Hollinger invention that will make Nike more money through LeBron’s statistics.

  3. Fun game no defense hardly on either side, a few things stand out. When Curry goes to help defensively and doubles in the interior other players need to stand behind him to get a shot at rebound after he doubles. The offensive bounds almost killed the Knicks tonight and could have cost them the game, seemingly a lot of those rebounds were almost within reaching distance of Curry just out of his grasp, the Knicks should be able to compensate for this oversight, as they were a high ranking rebounding team last year by simply getting his back more. Luckily even tough the defense on both sides was poorest st best, good offense can win you a lot of games in todays NBA so in some cases they can pick up some games through their mere will to score, which they have in spades. Balkman appeared lost and bewildered on the floor tonight, almost like he forgot the plays, but him coming off an injury and not seeing many minutes to begin with I cant really hate on him here, especially with the season he had prior to this year. The same can be said of Quentin Richardson who also looked puzzled. I have a tendency to think Isiah is now giving him the Jarred Jeffereys’ roll of trying to stop the other teams most prolific score while receiving few opportunities at the end of the floor. Who could really blame Thomas with such a loaded roster its hard to keep everyone happy. All and all I’m really happy for the Knicks victory here. Even though its really early in the year and it really shouldn’t mean much I feel like its an important win for them because I think more than any team in the league that the Knicks really have to start the year strong and come out of the gate quit, especially with so many games at home to start the campaign with, people have to boost morale, not to help Thomas keep his job, but to establish a winning attitude for professional basketball in New York again, for the players the team the fans and the organization itself. They absolutely should beat the sub par below .500 teams and they should be able to at least compete with the elite teams in the league. From what I see so far and I know is way to early to be making predictions, but I think if they can continue play good team ball and at least improve a little on their perimeter d(bad rotation in most cases it seems) that New York will be a playoff team this year.

  4. Good post Blogzilla. I forgot to mention in the earlier post that the other reason I felt a little funny was because that Toronto-Boston game had playoff intensity which the Knicks-Wolves did not. The Knicks-Cavs was intense, so I hope the Knicks are not playing down to the competition again this year. That’s very dangerous. Anyway, those Raptors look dangerous with their defensive intensity although T.J. Ford can run his own team out of a game. Still he is the type of guard that can blow the Knicks out because he is go-go-go all the time.

Boston is going to be a lot of fun to watch. Their bench was up standing up screaming most of the game. Big problem, because every game becomes a playoff game. They are the big boys on the block and will see most everyone’s A game. Can one be a playoff team for 82 games? We’ll see.

    REPOST REPOST REPOST REPOST

Funny. I am very happy we won. I agree with much of what has been said with an emphasis on Minesota Fans comments. Minnesota is a much better team than people would give them credit for. They handled Denver pretty well until the fourth quarter which is a time that experience and chemistry can take over. I also agree that Minny will get better. They definitely have some players. I am happy for Telfair, that he is getting a shot. He did o’k against his cousin who looked a little tentative at the start of the game. It was a win. Thank you. 1 out of 50? We’ll see.

I still fill a little funny though because the Cleveland game felt more like a victory to me. So I really do feel one and one. But the home team was a little different from the team that hung in there with Cleveland. The offense moved differently. Jamal played more point = more turnovers. The passes to the post were a little more labored. The passes to the guard coming to the ball for the perimeter pass were a bit dangerous. The perimeter defense was not nearly as good as the Cleveland game. In the Cleveland game we had a two minute lapse. Players were still running under screens. Why is Jamal still two players away from his man on defense? I don’t fault Zeke for not having D-Lee out there. That Smith guy was burning him up. And Q? That does not look like the same dude that atarted last season.

Still a good win. The media also lost its boo battle. Fans primarily come to games to have a good time not to protest.

Peaceman, you’re the man. I’ll bring a camcorder. But you’re scaring me about this media exposure stuff. My wife says that this is really a nationwide FBI sting run through sports blogs and when I step into Charlie O’s on Tuesday she won’t ever see me again. I keep telling her Defenders Defend not prosecute (LOL). I’m looking forward to it and hopefully meeting DVJ.

If I can come up with a Denver analysis I will. Time looks tight though, but I’ll try for those interested.

    Later.

  5. Very good win.
There’s no half-assed win. Every win is a good win. These players are also highly paid professionals with pride, playing at Madison Square Garden. Every player gets up to play at the Garden. I’ll take 50 of those, than the moral victories.
    Still. Some observations.
Zach’s living up to his rep as a black hole.
WTF. This guy is jacking up shots from just inside the three point line early in the shot clock.
This guy is hardly looking for the open man.
Zeke needs to have a serious talk here.
Crawford is still a huge liability on D.
Q is playing a good defensive role. Usually when a player is working hard on D. His offense suffers. He’s fine.
    Starbury:
We need to get away from checking minutes in the box score. There are many factors that determine how many minutes a player gets on any given night. Checking box score minutes are the tools of people that need to find some form of objection.
    JohnQ:
I’m a bit worried about you. Are you the one that asked yesterday if we lose to Minny, should Zeke be fired?
WTF! I think Barf should charge you the entrance fee again for such a silly comment.
    49 to go!

  6. Na, I asked that African and it was a good question.

We were down by 10 points in the first quarter.

  7. I dont know what you guys are talking about.

I thought the game went well. We weren’t beat up by anyone who should surprise you. The only new guy on the block in terms of giving the knicks trouble was craig smith. but when you consider the kind of players that give the knicks fits, criag smith fits the mold. he was unstoppable anywhere close to the rim. he pounded and pushed everyone’s favorite love-stick D.Lee. Anyone who thought he deserved more minutes is probably just in love with the young man. he got major burn last night and was only substituted for Curry and ZBo.

I thought at one point during the fourth -when zbo was going nutty, jacking up shots without regard to an open QRich at the 3 point line- that Lee should come in. Until then, he had played come back with the second unit and was in there for a long stretch. i understand why everyone extends so much man-love towards the kid but he’s not impervious to fatigue. he didn’t match up well against craig smith, al jefferson or gomes.

add them to the type of players the knicks have problems with:

    craig smith
    leon powe
    ryan gomes
    al jefferson
    ruben patterson
    nene
    varejao
    jamal magloire

these players only counter force on the knicks is Zach. Zach has the bulk and the willingness to be an asshole on the court. In the fourth, Z-Bo fouled-though unnecessarily- when he low bridged a T-Wolf (Smith I think) and sent him crashing to the floor. Randolph turned his back and walked away dismissively. That’s what an enforcer is. Lee is not that YET. If he was like that last year, the zach trade would not have had to happen. He’d be starting. Lee’s only problem is that he’d be a good fit at the SF position but he has problems guarding the, on the perimeter. If you could put him on SF’s like Gomes, Villanueva, Ruben Patterson, Gerald Wallace - in other words- rugged type SF’s with less than reliable 3 point range, he’d find himself in the rotation with more than 30 minutes.

So, sbfan aka the Mike Breen of our blog, I think there is a reason why Lee isn’t playing more minutes. Yes, the team plays well when he’s on the floor, but he’s not superman. He gets tired, and its noticeable. Zach gets tired and frustrated and its noticeable. Curry as well.

I thought Curry looked great last night on both ends. His free throw shooting sucked big bull balls, again. Still, he was boxing out his man (like in Cleveland) consistently, occupying his share of space on defense and paying attention to the game around him. Thats the beginning. He got timely rebounds by boxing out his man and skying over groups of dudes. He out jumped Theo Ratliff and out muscled Jefferson. Did he dominate on the boards? Of course not. It would be silly to expect that. At this point, I just want him to hold his own and make sure to do his share of the job. I think he’s been doing that for the 2 games thus far.

Z-Bo is a beast. He should have played less last night. He kept popping jumpshots he missed even when there was a wide open QRich dying for an open look by the 3 point line. I noticed at least 4 times when QRich was open and Zach opted to take a terrible shot. Of course I’m talking jumpshots, not paint shots. Assuming decent position, anywhere near the paint, Zach deserves a chance to shoot and create. The guy is magnificent one on one. He makes shots regularly that look horrible but somehow, he’s got that leaner-off-the-wrong-foot-with-no-follow-through shot. Strange.

Stephon and JCraw stepped up last night. Yes, Jamal went nutty but so does Kobe. Making shots is what separates a ball-hog from a playmaker. JCraw ket his head up enough to collect 7 assists and he kept driving enough to attempt 8 free throws. Thats imperative when the team needs to dictate the pace and gain control of the game’s tempo. When you have control of that, you can dictate the rhythm of the game. Stephon did a good job of playing within the game. He still missed a few shots off the drive, but he played inspired and he kept his head down on defense.

QRich had me scratching my head a bit on defense. Yes, he played well and for the most part stayed in front of his man or kept him off balance. But the guys on Minny were killing us in the paint. Too tall, too strong and too good at hitting shots. Jefferson looked great again. So did Gomes. Before the game, TMan mentioned how trading those Celtics to Minny in such a big package helped their continuity. I thought the same thing too while watching the game and even noted it. Theo Ratliff was said to feel a lot healthier and he played like it. Spin moves in the post and drawing BS fouls on Curry on defense. He even made some great blocks.

So as far as Minny being the worst team in the league, that’s bullshit. There are no stars, but they are deep and they have a collection of guys who gave the knicks fits last year. It was a good win against a team that fought hard. Those are the games were are supposed to win if our 50 win predictions have any chance at coming true.

  11. Gotta lobve the NY media……………

    Bermans blog tday……….

“But the big story was the fans generally laying off Isiah. The Knick fans may be fatigued by the sexual-harassment story by now. Maybe they realize some of the facts have been distorted on Isiah’s view of the white-black “bitch” controversy. Vivian Stringer and Rev. Sharpton have supported Isiah in the last two weeks.”

Hysterical. Maybe we realize that some facts have been distorted ???? Who distorted these facts ? Think hard Bermy ! How come I can’t get through one article about the Knicks that doesn’t somehow allude to the trial ? To hear the media describe a game, you would think the refs are wearing juges robes and the bench has become the jury box ! Is it impossible for any of the area reporters to seperate the game from the summers trial ?

What happened to objective reporting ???? or at least reporting that covers the intended topic?

I have a question for either Modi or Anti or anyone else who hates the NYMedia. Do any of you know when the media became so biased against our team ? Was it a certain era ? When did it begin ?

So you’d fire your coach after the second game of the season?!
    Are you sure you’re male?
You guys act like some emotional bit**es!
    Get a clue!
Dallas started 0-7 I think last year and won 60+ games.
This is a 50 win team.

  14. Gotta love the NY media……………

    Bermans blog tday……….

“But the big story was the fans generally laying off Isiah. The Knick fans may be fatigued by the sexual-harassment story by now. Maybe they realize some of the facts have been distorted on Isiah’s view of the white-black “b!tch” controversy.

  15. African, I like you so I’ll take it easy.

    “Are you sure you’re male?”
    I’ll let that slide…

“You guys act like some emotional bit**es!”
I’ll let that slide only because we won last night.

“Dallas started 0-7 I think last year and won 60+ games.”
Please look that up and get back to us….in other words..your wrong.

“This is a 50 win team.”
    Who said it wasn’t?

I think we can go to the Conference Finals with this team…

    John Q…

objective reporting is something we’ll never see in NY when it comes to the Knicks.

Let’s see if the Rangers trial will be as large as the Knicks.

  17. Sometimes when I read reports by some of these media guys, I wonder whether it is just their lack of intellect or just plain hatorade. Just read this from Berman’s article in the post about last nite’s game:

“Even the refs seemed on Isiah’s side. After Crawford missed a jumper with the Knicks up three, Randolph appeared to knock the ball out of bounds with 39.2 seconds left. The refs gave the ball to the Knicks.”

Nothing about the flops that were ruled offensive fouls against Curry. Or the many other calls that didn’t go our way.

  18. I dont know what you guys are talking about sometimes.

I thought the game went well. We weren’t beat up by anyone who should surprise you. The only new guy on the block in terms of giving the knicks trouble was craig smith. but when you consider the kind of players that give the knicks fits, craig smith fits the mold. he was unstoppable anywhere close to the rim. he pounded and pushed everyone’s favorite love-stick D.Lee. Anyone who thought Lee deserved more minutes is probably just in love with the young man. he got major burn last night and was only substituted for Curry and ZBo.

I thought at one point during the fourth -when zbo was going nutty, jacking up shots without regard to an open QRich at the 3 point line- that Lee should come in. Until then, he had played during the come back with the second unit and was in there for a long stretch. i understand why everyone extends so much man-love towards the kid but he’s not impervious to fatigue. he didn’t match up well against craig smith, al jefferson or gomes. so when he came out, it was because he was tired and being abused. i know everyone loves to say that he collected his usually 10 boards off the bench, but if he doesn’t- there’s usually a reason.

here’s a quick list of the type of players the knicks have problems with(feel free to add to it):

    craig smith
    leon powe
    ryan gomes
    al jefferson
    ruben patterson
    nene
    varejao
    jamal magloire

these players only counter force on the knicks is Zach. Zach has the bulk and the willingness to be an assh-le on the court. In the fourth, Z-Bo fouled -though unnecessarily- when he low bridged a T-Wolf (Smith I think) and sent him crashing to the floor. Randolph turned his back and walked away dismissively. That’s what an enforcer is. Willing to do what it takes to send a message. Not malicious, but stern. Unapologetic. Lee is not that YET. If he was like that last year, the zach trade would not have had to happen. He’d be starting. Lee’s only problem is that if he is not quicker or faster than his match up and gets over powered, he’s pretty ineffective. On nights such as last night, he’d be a good fit at the SF position but he has problems guarding them on the perimeter. If you could put him on SF’s like Gomes, Villanueva, Ruben Patterson, Gerald Wallace - in other words- rugged slashing type SF’s with less than reliable 3 point range, he’d find himself in the rotation with more than 30 minutes.

So, sbfan aka the Mike Breen of our blog(only because he loooooves Lee so much that he makes it sound like Lee is being short changed), I think there is a reason why Lee isn’t playing more minutes. Yes, the team plays well when he’s on the floor, but he’s not superman. He gets tired, and its noticeable. Zach gets tired and frustrated and its noticeable. Curry as well. As Lee gets older, he’ll be more rugged, stronger, smarter, even more efficient and even closer to his teammates. His day is coming. And when it does, there will be no more denying him time. But that time is not yet upon us. So quit bitching. In the end, if he remains a Knick for a long time, he’ll have a chance to be a legendary type player. He’s got the makings of one. Just sit back and enjoy his development. His upside is of the late, great Debusschere. All he needs is a consistent jumper, but that’s not news.

I thought Curry looked great last night on both ends. His free throw shooting sucked big bull balls, again. Still, he was boxing out his man (like in Cleveland) consistently, occupying his share of space on defense and paying attention to the game around him. Thats the beginning. He got some timely rebounds by boxing out his man and skying over groups of dudes. He out jumped Theo Ratliff and out muscled Jefferson. Did he dominate on the boards? Of course not. It would be silly to expect that out of him. At this point, I just want him to hold his own and make sure to do his share of the job. I think he’s been doing that for the 2 games thus far. He’s got to concentrate on getting to the free throw line and CONVERTING those free throws. It’s messing with his point averages. He needs that ice-water in his veins.

Assuming decent position anywhere near the paint, Zach deserves a chance to shoot and create. The guy is magnificent one on one. He makes shots regularly that look horrible but somehow, he’s got that leaner-off-the-wrong-foot-with-no-follow-through shot. Strange. His defense on Minny’s big men was a sore spot. He was too flat footed to guard up close and lacks the leaping ability to recover if he gives them too much space. Jefferson has a great jumpshooting touch and was on display when Zach gave him room to pop it. When Zach tried to cheat, Jefferson had a move or two to create the necessary space, often drawing a foul in the process. All in all, Zach didn’t match up well against their front line. At the Center spot (when Curry was out and Lee was in) Zach did better. If Malik “knew his place” on the offensive end -meaning HE SHOULDN’T SHOOT- I would have like to him in instead of Zach. Only to see if the matchup would work better, if not, then out he goes.

Stephon and JCraw stepped up last night. Yes, Jamal went nutty but so does Kobe. Making shots is what separates a ball-hog from a playmaker. JCraw kept his head up enough to collect 7 assists and he kept driving enough to attempt 8 free throws. Thats imperative when the team needs to dictate the pace and gain control of the game’s tempo. When you have control of that, you can dictate the rhythm of the game. Stephon did a good job of playing within the game. He still missed a few shots off the drive, but he played inspired and he kept his head down on defense. His jumpshot looked wet and he stopped and popped more mid range jumpers. I like that. Really do.

QRich had me scratching my head a bit on defense. Yes, he played well and for the most part stayed in front of his man or kept him off balance. But the guys on Minny were killing us in the paint. Too tall, too strong and too good at hitting shots. Jefferson looked great again. So did Gomes. I thought we missed Jeffries. I thought we missed a healthier, stronger Balkman.

So as far as Minny being the worst team in the league, that’s bullsh-t. There are no stars, but they are deep and they have a collection of guys who gave the knicks fits last year. They will keep getting better. I thought they missed McCants at the end of the game. He really made plays that need making. I think he’s going to be the glue if Minny does anything this year.

It was a good win against a young team that fought hard. Those are the games were are supposed to win if our 50 win predictions have any chance at coming true.

  20. Hey, I noticed the new stats, too. +/- is like hockey: how many more points (or less) did your team score against the other team while you were on the court. From looking at this stat you can see that the Knicks bench dominated the Wolves bench, and that when Richardson and Marbury were on the court the Knicks were awful. Obviously that isn’t exact, but Marbury is a defensive liability at times (not so much yesterday against Bassy); Crawford is the worst, though, so I was suprised the Knicks were +1 while he was on the court. I guess he makes up for his bad plays on defense with offense and steals in the passing lane. Plus he does a good job of looking for Curry.

“BA” is blocks against, meaning how many times you got stuffed.

  28. African,

In reference to David Lee, you have every right to believe what you do. Just don’t expect me to agree with you.

My logic in watching the games, not the box scores, brings me to the conclusion that David Lee needs more than 30 minutes per game. The first two games, we’re losing when he’s not in there, winning when he is on the floor. Correct me if I’m wrong, my eyes tell me that he makes things happen out there on the basketball court. There is no reason to believe David Lee isn’t one of the most important players on this team, as such he deserves more PT than 25 a night. Isiah heaped on the praise last night for Zach getting a double double on a bad night. Okay, that’s fine, a double double is what we wanted out of Zach. As you know, David Lee got double-doubles every night last season, off the bench.

BTW, I really like Zach Randolph and think the trade was a heist in favor of New York. I just think David Lee should play more, like most of the Knicks fans out there that watch the games.

By Starburyfan on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:38 am

  29. Mike Breen? Bullsh*t. I form my own opinions and incidentally have hated mike breen for years. I go by what I see on the court.

stop mike lupica, thanks for enlightening me with the new knowledge.

By Starburyfan on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:41 am

  30. Na..we don’t need more minutes for Lee.

We should keep the minutes the way they are.

That way..nobody is at more risk of getting hurt.

Sure anybody can get hurt at anytime…..but if Lee plays 25-27 minutes a game, we win and he’s fine with his role…why change?

KG is playing 40 minutes a game…as is Pierce and Allan. One of them will go down soon.

I looked it up. Dallas started 0-4. Got my point?
    Try the decaf.
You’re my boy and all, but you guys go way overboard.
You hang your heart on every play! Every game. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
The mere fact that you’d think about firing the coach after two games, needs an intervention.
    Barf:
Very good analysis. The so-called pundits check the box score and key in on Lee’s minutes to find an issue with the coach. Lee is getting good minutes.
I also agree that Zach should have been pulled at earlier inervals.
Isiah is doing a good enough job, but I’d like to see a new coach in the mold of Eddie Jordan to guide this dynamic roser. The GM and coaching duties is just too much for anyone here in NY.

By African on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:45 am

  34. 40 mpg. that’s what steph and crawford got last night, you know. they played great, but how about protecting them, if that is what Isiah is up to? I think they’re even more at risk for incurring injury than the younger cats on the team.

By Starburyfan on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:46 am

  35. DVJ

Yep, one of those boys will go down. Far too many minutes. I don’t wish for it. In fact I wish them great health and exciting losses to the Knicks. But their physical break down is inevitable at this pace. Every Boston game is a playoff game. It can’t be done 82 times.

By Lives In New Jersey, Loves New York on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:46 am

  36. No, No, No African. Not Eddie Jordan. He is a jersey boy and I like him, but his management of the Wizards has been less than stellar over time. I don’t know who could replace Zeke at this point, but not Eddie J. I’ll sleep on that one.

  38. Exactly Lives…

    African says:

“This is a marathon, not a sprint.”

    Wrong sport my brother….that’s baseball.

If you don’t come out the gate sprinting…you will not finish top 8.

    See what Miami is doing?

Why do you think there in such a rush to bring back Wade?

Wade is going to be rushed back and it could be bad for the Heat in the long run.

How do you change a return date from around Christmas to before Thanksgiving?

Crawford needs to relax on those shots.

He was making them last night….great.

Let’s see when he’s not making them.

If you think he’s going to do that on the regular your wrong.

Crawford has those type of games once in a blue.

Hopefully, I’m wrong and he does it again Tuesday but more than likely he won’t.

By DaVonn J on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:51 am

  39. BARF, David Lee already arrived last year, otherwise you wouldn’t hear his name thrown around in package deals for well established players like Ron Artest or Kobe Bryant.

So African, just trying to clarify, are you saying you’d like Isiah to just be GM and not coach?

Isiah has a tough job because there are so many players on this team it is very hard to manage minutes. I give him credit for getting the rotation down to 8 (maybe 9 when Jared Jeffries returns).

By Starburyfan on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:52 am

  40. I’m home today guys so we can go all day.

We won last night and I feel good.

All you guys that think this is a good win, guess what?

    Your right.

No such thing as a bad win…a win is a win.

Instead of taking the positives out of it like Isiah did last year….he should focus on the negatives.

Never give the team credit in the public eye.

Let’s see what Isiah has to say about Carmello and Iverson before we play them tomorrow. He’ll probably be slurping them like he did LBJ and
Mello will probably end up with 40.

By DaVonn J on Nov 5, 2007 at 11:55 am

  41. For the game against Denver, it will be important for our guards to establish our big tandem in the post EARLY:

“Big men Nene and Kenyon Martin are under doctors orders not to exceed 25 minutes as they recover from calf and knee injuries.”

I would recommend setting a methodical pace by dumping into the bigs early and often. If they cheat by collapsing early on our post presence, JCraw and Steph should do what they did in Minny. Breaking the defense down, attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line as much as possible (AMAP) will help take the attention away from our behemoths down low and open the game up. Its important to dictate the pace against the Nuggets:

“I never thought I would see my team slowed down as much as they slowed us down,” Karl said. “No one wanted to run.”

“Run and pass, that’s who we are. That’s what we want to be. I’m just astounded we don’t want to run as hard as I think necessary.”

But that means our bigs have to protect the basket. Melo and AI can shoot from the outside but do most of their damage by penetrating and breaking the defense down, getting to the free throw line or getting easy shots. JR Smith will be back out there after serving a 3 game suspension to start the season. And after what happened last year, we know it will be intense because these two teams have a history:
With all eyes on the rematch, it should present a good opportunity for the Nuggets to put the New Orleans debacle behind them.

“If we ain’t motivated for that game,” Anthony said, “I don’t know what game we could be motivated for.”

  42. Lives:
Think about it. Who else? Remember he was the main man behind the Nets success before he went to Washington.
I think he’s the sleeper coach in the league. In Washington, he’s in a bad situation where his leader Agent Zero is the culprit for many of the breakdowns. They lack leadership. Given a defferent situation, I think he’ll excell.
The alternatives are Herb and Laimbeer.
    Starbury:
Let’s agree to disagree. I love Lee, but I don’t see any player that deserves a specific amount of minutes on any given night. There are many factors that determine minutes distribution. One of them is in this case, is how rugged the opposing power forward is. Lee is not there as yet.

  44. I think people need to open their eyes about Crawford!
He’s our most dangerous offensive threat! He’s made a much bigger effort
on the defensive end and still has a way to go on that point!
He is almost unstoppable off the dribble, and I can see him zoneing
and getting the OK from Zeke to Destroy any team we face when you see him in that Zone!
Last night he looked less “bulky” and his flow is returning! I’m telling you we haven’t seen
him in the light that we will this year! Crawford will be an All Star this year!

To reiterate my position, I get crazy only when we lack effort! When that happens I will also
call out the players who I feel didn’t show up! I will say #$#@# things about them, but
I also will heap praise when they are doing their job! I’m very satisfied by our first two games!
The Denver game is a BIG game…so if the Knicks are not self motivated for this game, it’s time reevaluate
    this teams needs!

My take on the Denver game,
Fred Jones should see major minutes along with Nate(if healthy) for the lone purpose of
sticking in AI’S jock all night. This may be a night where Lee may get his minutes cut, in favor
of Balkman and Chandler, who have a much better chance than Lee of makeing Yellow Mello work his
Azz off all game! Melo will exploit Lee and Zach with ease. That’s the advantage of this team being so
deep! We may not see Jones or Chandler for a while after the Denver game, because its all about
Match ups……on our quest to 50.

Nah, I’ve had problems with EJordan too. Not until last year was he playing any of his bench. The team has been too slow and too methodical for their talent. When you have Jamison, Arenas, Butler, Daniels, Blatche…you should be making much more noise than they have been making. As it is now, the only reason people even know the Wiz is because Arenas is a phenom. Only if you’re in the know, do you realize that Caron Butler came in and made things work. But that is not because he the most talented of fellows but because he’s a tough minded dude.

EJordan and Mike Woodson are the type of coaches you rebuild with and get a culture of tough-mindedness because they will ride the players. But if you want to eke out every ounce of talent from your players, you need a Rick Adelman, an Isiah Thomas, a Don Nelson. Coaches who players want to play for and work hard for. Those don’t grow on trees.

But I agree with AF in that GM/COach is tough position to have in NYC. Too hard.

The only justification for it is:

You want the BEST leader in your organization to guide/coach/lead your team.

You want the best diplomat to be the face of your organization when making GM moves/trades.

The only way to make a situation like the NYK’s work is the way it is now. The person closest to the action has the final say in roster moves.

Either that, or the coach has to be an Isiah protege. There can’t be anymore backstabbing and miscommunication. Every coach under Isiah before LB seems to have gotten a raw deal. Then LB turned the tables and got publicly roasted. I’ve had enough of that. I just want to see where this Isiah-led vision will take the team in the next 5 years. I’m very curious to see how this wave of talent will develop and to see where the next wave of talent will come from. WIll I.T. Continue to build through the draft or will he continue fleecing people in trades?

I.T’s moves have come from a vulnerable position. Now that he’s amassed a collection of player’s that GM’s MIGHT actually want, I wonder how the moves will evolve.

  47. as long as NYK keep winning games, I’m happy. 40mpg, 30mpg, 20mpg. W’s that’s what they need right about now. I know that Lee is a guy with a huge ego and desire to be out there, I think because he says all the right things during interviews people assume he’s content with the status quo. He wants to start just as bad as Nate wants to start, and Nate really wants to start. Maybe their time will come. Zach Randolph is a young, budding all-star, he’s not going anywhere. Lee isn’t even my favorite player on the team. Renaldo is, followed by ZBo, so far.

The GM job is Done! There is no need for anyone in that position
because this team is young and can stay together without Major moves for years!
Artest is the only move that is viable and has been in the making for sometime now, so that move in a sense is not Major!

  54. Peace:
Quite wrong on that GM front. As a GM, you’re constantly looking to upgrade your team.
That’s a 24/7 job. My concern is, as the coach, you’ve got to spend lots of time looking at tapes to formulate game plans. What happens when you hear a desired player is about to be available? That takes a whole lot of effort trying to figure out packages, matching wages, chemistry,…..
In this city, it’s just too much. That’s one of the reasons I give Zeke much respect for the job he’s doing amid the turmoil of the NYC tabloid.
I agree, that coach would have to be someone in your fold. After the work he did to amass that talent level, you need someone that has the same vision as you do. I just threw out Jordan because I admire him as a teacher, but I think we would need one in the near future. Not necessarily this season.

  55. John Q,

In regards to your question, #8. I have no problem answering. You asked:
“I have a question for either Modi or Anti or anyone else who hates the NYMedia. Do any of you know when the media became so biased against our team ? Was it a certain era ? When did it begin ?”

Well first I personally do not hate the NY Media. I do hate/dislike any media person who’s bias against my Knicks team when it’s unwarranted.

The NY media became bias right around the time Larry Brown was coaching this Knicks team to the ground. While he was doing that, he let it be known that he was unhappy with the team that Isiah Thomas put on the floor, and that Marbury was not a point guard he wanted on his team, he seemingly longed for Eric Snow.

Now fast forward to the part where Larry was warned not to go airing the Knicks dirty laundry to the Media, by Dolan, himself. Now Larry did not like this, and he made it clear to his NY media buddies that’s happens to be the Knicks beat writers, Frank Isola(NYDaily News), Marc Berman(NY Post), and sports opinion writers, Mike Lupica(DN), and Knicks and basketball related opinion writers like, Mitch Lawrence(DN) and Peter Vecsey(Post).
Fast forward a little…where the part Larry gets fired, at the end of the Knicks season. Dolan fires Larry Brown and places Isiah in his stead.
Now the latter part is where things starts to get interesting and creates in me the beginnings or signs of me creating my secret identity and moniker, Anti-NYSportsNews.
Through out the course of the summer, but primarily around the time the new 2006/2007 NBA season was set to begin, us Knicks Defenders started seeing, or reading such nonsense, or garbagness, I like to say, on such a scale that was never was seen by me or any of us, before.

    Part 2 is tomorrow.

    By Anti-NYSportsNews on Nov 5, 2007 at 12:43 pm

  56. “The alternatives are Herb and Laimbeer.” Thats interesting.

“There are many factors that determine minutes distribution. One of them is in this case, is how rugged the opposing power forward is. Lee is not there as yet.” I think that sums up my position on Lee. Lee’s not so unflawed a player that he “deserves” more minutes than anyone else. He gets fatigued just like everyone else. He loses his pop when he’s fatigued like everyone else. Its one of the things you have to deal with when you have a younger core of players leading your team. As he matures, he’ll get the experience, the veteran wiles, to be even more efficient than he already is. If he picks up a jumpshot, it gives him the chance to play in the SF spot like Rudy T amd Dave Debush could. I’m not even saying he should bulk up because I don’t want to see him slow down or move into a full time Center position. But if he could work on a consistent short jumper off the glass, or a reliable push shot on the run, he’d be a nightmare to guard. As it is now, he’s dangerous on the break. Imagine when he’s dangerous in the half court sets off cuts and left alone in dead spots on the floor. He’s got a knack for finding those dead areas and playing those angles for rebounds and quick putbacks. He’d be deadly if he could step back out of traffic and put one off the backboard.

“He’s our most dangerous offensive threat! He’s made a much bigger effort
on the defensive end and still has a way to go on that point!”-peace

I’m not going to say he’s great on defense because he’s not, but JCraw’s doing better. I don’t see him being awful like some are saying. He’s blocking shots (that he doesn’t get credit for), picking up steals, knocking balls loose and being a nuisance. His biggest f**k up on “d” is that he tends to help out in the lane too much. He relies on his long arms too much when he recovers. If he stays home more often -especially when he’s guarding a quick shooter- he’d be seen as more consistent. He’s a good defender on the open court when the opponents are on a break. He’s quick-handed, long-armed, tough, anticipates the offensive player well (probably cuz he knows dribble moves so well) and fleet-footed. He’s one of my favs when he’s NOT noticeably tired. When he’s frustrated or tired, he looks a mess. Especially on defense. But who isn’t?

I thought his bulk messed him up but I jumped the gun. He looks good and strong. On defense, it’s night and day from last year. I don’t know what other’s are talking about. If its that he helps out too much on defense and doesn’t recover in time on his own man, then I don’t think its as big a deal as some of you do. I think its correctable.

  57. BTW
I can see Zeke giving up the coaching postion next year after we win 50!

as Isola, Berman and Lawrence will piss their pants in post game interviews!
Zeke can trust Knight, while he returns to GM! Can you Imagine Knight at post game interviews?
    Example:
Lawrence: Mr. Knight, it seemed your knicks had their game faces on tonight. Care to Comment?
Knight: Game face? What the Hell do you call your face?

Isola: Mr. Knight, your big men lacked effort tonight, what did you say to them in the locker room?

  64. Leave J Craw a lone I say, and stop being nit-pickers. When you have the guys on this Knicks team that can get by any man in the Leaque like Wade and Kobe, you guys gotta chill with Crawford defensive bashing. Do you want this Kid to be superman alreay.

I mean, if you have someone with the scoring ablity like him, and take it on anyone off the dribble like him,you wanting his defense to be like Bowen is asking for a little to much.

We should all be glad that the Knicks have a players like Jamal Crawford on this team. He doesn’t bring this team the noriety and fame like a Wade or Kobe, but in my opinion he’s just as talented if not more. Can Wade pop a three like Crawford can? Alright, then, lay off od him and supposed suspect defense. I’m not calling no one out here, and I won’t, but I could and I won’t care or mine to Defend my stance with anyone here. There’s no half stepping on my part as a Knicks Defender.

One more point: I think the way Crawford scores on opponents, seemingly effortlessly, at times, it goes without saying that most players he scores on, for the most part seeks and desires strongly to do the same to him, as well. I know I would. If that his weakness, playing defense, then why not exploit it?

Like I said, Jamal Crawford, when he can do both… the day you would see Jamal score and defend just as well, would be the day when you see his name being mentioned, and being compared to some Hall of Fame greats.

  65. “Correct me if I’m wrong, my eyes tell me that he makes things happen out there on the basketball court. There is no reason to believe David Lee isn’t one of the most important players on this team, as such he deserves more PT than 25 a night.”-sbfan

I agree with that. But there is a PF in Zach that does things that DLee does not. The reason Zach can play Center alongside Lee is the same reason Lee is still the 6th man. He’s not rugged enough to play against any and every PF, yet. It is to his credit that minus the bulk and ruggedness, that he can still play alongside both Curry and Zach. It says a lot about his play that the most successful line up last night was Nate, JCraw, Balkman, Lee and Zach. Lee’s a huge part of our second unit and is not replaceable but he’s got some flaws.

“Isiah heaped on the praise last night for Zach getting a double double on a bad night. Okay, that’s fine, a double double is what we wanted out of Zach. As you know, David Lee got double-doubles every night last season, off the bench.”-sbfan

I just read that Isiah said he “scratched out” a double-double. Which, to me, means that he had a sh!tty night but worked his butt off to still put together a statistically respectable night. But, in terms of shots made and taken, Z-Bo had a disgusting night. Not in a good way either. But, Zach was a part of so many different lineups (as was Curry) and he finds a role in so many lineups, that he still managed to put together a good night in terms of numbers. Isiah shouldn’t have to say that about DLee cuz we all know that DLee’s versatility is one of the biggest upsides of the Knicks roster and every GM already knows that. Zach’s new to this team so you have to advertise his value to the team. People see the shooting percentage for Randolph last night and want to deduce that he had a bad night. In one sense he did have a bad night, but we got the win and he put in his work. Did his part.

“I know that Lee is a guy with a huge ego and desire to be out there, I think because he says all the right things during interviews people assume he’s content with the status quo.” -sbfan

I get the impression you think DLee’s being taken advantage of because of the “nice guy factor”. He’s too nice a guy and so he is being overlooked. I dont think that’s the truth though.

  66. I love that link from Starburyfan! That is why we need Zeke’s mentor HERE!
Knight is fiercely loyal to all of his former players! If he were offered the Job by Zeke after
a successful season and thought he could win a chip, Knight may be game, and one of the few
people Zeke can trust! I hope every defenders veiws Starburys Booby Knight link!
That is exactly the Man to handle this NY media and can Coach within Zeke’s mind set!

  67. Good early PM Defenders. Back in the Ewing era the east had the biggest and strongest teams then shaq went west and the pendulum swung west and for about a decade the west became the dominant division. Now the center of gravity seems to be favouring the eastern division. Just take a look at some of the eastern conferenc Bigs, there are some beastly big men in the east right now. Check it
    East
    Curry NY
    Randolph NY
    KG BOS
    Perkins BOS
    Scalabrine BOS
    Magliore NJ
    Bosh TOR
    Bargnani TOR
    Krstic NJ
    Al Horford Hotlanta
    Pachula Hotlanta
    Okafer Char
    Big Ben Chi
    Ilgauskas CLe
    Gooden Cle
    Rasheed Det
    J. Oneal Ind
    Dwight Howard Orl
    Shaq Mia
The glory days are coming back to our conference there will be many competitive and exciting nights of roundball in the east for this and upcoming seasons.
Tuesday night’s game will be very interesting. Marcus Campby is getting better each year. I believe he had 21 boards last game and he also possesses a nice inside out game. Anthony may be a bit over-rated but everyone knows what AI brings to the game every night. It will be about pride for the Knicks. I must admit I would really like to see Isiah and George Karl put on gloves and do a prelim in the Garden to the Coto - Mosley on Saturday. Like Boston found out earlier, The Knicks are a tough group with a hard coach. George Karl is a sissy kissy weepy, hiding his insecurities by acting like a hard nose coach. He will soon be exposed.

One final thing Starbury can defend himself but how can anyone in their right mind call this man Breem. breem reminds one of the Philly newscaster that used to put Gerbels up his ass. They really look alike.

As I was walking down the road today I saw 3 Knick Jerseys a Sprewel, he is still popular down here, a faded # 20 and MARBURY. The EC is Knick Land

That’s it from the EC. Bless-Up to all defenders, Big Ups Cooley safe travels, African you African you, Lives give thanks for your concise synopsis in an earlier post yesterday, Starbury give thanks for the space, Davon/DNM no disrespect

  68. Anti..

I agree with everything you said in that post.

You made excellent points about Crawford and I agree that we can keep him and be fine.

I just wanted to point out something you said that has no explanation.

“He doesn’t bring this team the noriety and fame like a Wade or Kobe, but in my opinion he’s just as talented if not more. Can Wade pop a three like Crawford can? Alright, then, lay off od him and supposed suspect defense.”

Crawford, Wade and Kobe don’t belong in the same sentence when you talk about basketball skills. They don’t belong in the same BOOK!!

2 of those 3 players have post up games. I said it before and I’ll say it again….if Crawford had a post game then maybe we can put him with them but until then
there’s no way in hell he is on the same level as Wade or Kobe.
Crawford is nice…people would be stupid to say he isn’t.
His defense destroys us !!! You don’t see teams going at Kobe or Wade the way they go at Crawford.

    That’s all

    1-1

I’d love to have Knight here, if only to hear the replies to the dumb-assed questions from the press.

  70. he can’t be overlooked because Isiah is the guy who found him with #30 when nobody else knew about him. hey, if the knicks win 50 wins this season with lee aveaging 20 minutes, I’ll take it.

  72. Suns’ Stoudemire Sidelined By Knee Injury
    November 4, 2007 - 7:55 pm
    AP -
Suns center Amare Stoudemire missed the game against the Cavaliers on Sunday night because of a troublesome right knee.

The All-Star had arthroscopic surgery on the knee on Oct. 2.

Suns coach Mike D’Antoni said Stoudemire was day to day. [READ]
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

That’s how it always starts off. Then next thing you know…he’s out for the season.

That surgery he had was serious and nobody really comes back from it. You may come back eventually but it will always give out
    sooner rather than later.

    So sad….so sad.

    ESPN -
The Los Angeles Lakers were leading the Jazz by seven points midway through the fourth quarter when Kobe Bryant made the ultimate defensive stop on Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko. The two-time NBA scoring champ then got six of his 33 points in the final 4½ minutes to secure a 119-109 victory over the Jazz on Sunday night.

    Miami Herald -
Pat Riley and the Miami Heat were forced into letting Jason Kapono go, reluctantly, because the Raptors threw so much money at him a minute after the midnight period that began free agency.
However, so early in the season, Riley appears to be regretting the move.
”If I had to do it over again, probably we may have invested in Kapono,” Riley admits. “Young. A specialist. He can really shoot the ball.”

    terrible….just terrible.

  73. Did you guys here Isola’s faggy Azz voice ask Zeke in the post game interview
” What did Dolan say to you?”…..Who cares about that Shyt after we just Won the Home

  75. Love the passion Defenders. Give the coach credit for the hard decisions made. 8 man rotation with the depth to go deeper as the game permits. 6 players in double figures. Still a work in progress on devensive rotations. Our favorite tabloid New York print writers are doing their venomous spinning. Other than Howard Beck of the Times, our favorite writers and colleagues continue to live in the recent past. Not acknowledging the Garden rocking from the opening tip. When was the Garden this festive opening night. These morons are harping on who got booed???? Have mercy on the NBA if Jamal continues to grow. Eddy and Zach can ball together. Lee, N8 and Taz have no peers in energy and skillz off the bench. We lost Friday but ask Cleveland how the felt after the game, relieved. The true fans know this team is on the brink of something special. This not coming from the heart but from the body of work this group puts in. The east has improved with us, Boston, Toronto and add Atlanta to this mix. Detroit is the class but aging, Paxson has messed up his team’s confidence with the Kobe trade rumors but they will be fine, New Jersey is solid but Kidd is going to go down to a bad back during the season. I’m not a doctor but look at athletes with back issues. See Q. Richardson for reference. Miami even with DWade is through and most objective basketball people with crediable knowledge will agree. Now Defenders, advise!!!!

  76. The Nuggets lost their third point guard when Michael Wilks strained his right hamstring in the second quarter and didn’t return. Wilks was re-signed after Denver lost Anthony Carter to a broken right hand and Chucky Atkins to a severe groin strain. Carter is expected to be out four to six weeks and Atkins six to eight weeks. So, Iverson ran the point and logged 46 1/2 minutes.

“It’s tough when three of your point guards are injured and not playing and A.I. is playing the point all the time and you also don’t have the ability to put another ball-handler on the court,” Karl said. “And the conditioning of my team is not great. The injuries, the limited minutes on Kenyon [Martin] and Nene.”

Karl said he might put ‘Melo at the point, but Anthony said Wilks expects to be back soon.

If we can start agressive for tomorrows game and wear this team out from the beginning we can take this game…..Camby had 21 rebounds we should let DAVID LEE start or play more minutes and out rebound Denver !

    GO KNICKS!

I think I’m onto something with that vescey/Mark revelation. Take a minute and think about it for a second.
Read Vescey for a couple weeks, and tell me you don’t see a milder Mark in there!
