A Video Sendoff for Demetris Nichols, the Promising Knicks Swingman who was Rejected by Jerome James’ Mid Level Exception Contract

October 25, 2007 – 9:45 pm

Demetris Nichols, young rookie from Syracuse, you can shoot the rock–hope you land on your feet and make a pro squad. You defied Isiah twice too often, and yet I credit you for having courage to stick up for yourself because you believe you are destined to play in the NBA this year. There is no way of telling right now if you will make it as an NBA player. However, since Isiah found you, the odds are, you would have been a good addition to the Knicks had you agreed to go to Europe for a year–but you refused. Isiah liked your game enough to trade a pick for you, yet apparently Isiah is in love with having Jerome James rot on the bench in street clothes, because that’s all he’s going to do for the Knicks this year. I’ve seen enough to know that by now, because that is all he’s done for two full years now. I hope I’m wrong, but if Nate Robinson is all heart, then Jerome James is just halfhearted. I know the financial ramifications of the story, but we’re talking about Jim Dough-lan here. That’s what we’ve done since the Ewing trade, buy out players we no longer want–and I’m not saying it is Isiah’s fault, so don’t go there. Still, that’s been New York’s “MO.” Pay them not to play for us. In that respect, keeping Jerome James is the same as buying him out, because NY is still paying him not to play. A second round pick is a second round pick, but when you’re Isiah and you can turn a second round pick into Trevor Ariza, then you have to wonder what exactly New York gained by bringing Nichols over just to cut him.

My apologies to all the Jerome James Knicks fans out there. Both of you.

Once Nichols starts selling insurance in two years…you can bet you will be
Drossman’s house cleaner! Like BENSON! LOL… that’s how far from the truth your statement is in the prior blog!
PS. Don’t stand on his lawn and pose like a caddy! I don’t care how much he offers!

  8. I don’t hate Jerome, I just think he’s had many chances to make an impact on the team, and for the most part he hasn’t. the people that say keep him for shaq and dwight howard don’t realize how little PT jerome actually gets over the past two years due to “injuries.” what kills me is, every season, about 3 games out of 82, you will see jerome come in and get two blocks and make some jump shots and then the Garden crowd is stunned when he waives to the bench to come out of the game because he can’t catch his breath. it’s called being in condition when your number is called. remember a guy named rick brunson?

hopefully demetris will get that same chance on another team. otherwise it’s the d-league for him. why does he have such a phobia of europe anyway? i wish somebody would pay me to go play ball in europe for a year.

    That was funny.
You already know I have no education and I’m on welfare, so why be the butler, when I can collect free checks?
Get ready to buy some life insurance from your favorite two-year-career ex NBA player.
That was my way of releasing some tension. This shit was geting too heated.
Let’s track Nichols’ career and see how that goes. IMO he’s a 11th man on an NBA roster for his entire career.
I see no star there. Zero!

  11. Great call on the D-Nice video. A true classic, featuring a great sample (The Turtles - Buzzsaw).

I would have preferred Nichols to Jerome James. James is dead weight, who is (supposedly) looking at season-ending surgery (according to the Post, so who knows?). Nichols had a great shot.

That being said, he’s a second-rounder, and half of second-rounders get cut every preseason. It’s just a matter of space. Maybe in two to three years, he’ll develop and make the Knicks regret this, like Gilbert Arenas did. Or, most likely, he’ll disappear to the D-League, and never make any major contributions.

  12. you could be right African.

I enjoy blogging with you guys. i appreciate it when you bring the humor in to lighten things up when things get too heated. we all should enjoy watching and discussing the knicks. i know we are serious knicks fans, but still basketball is fun.

let’s face it we look damn good right now, and I have little to complain about.

hope we continue with more winning in the regular season.

so did the offseason take forever or did it go fast?

  15. Blogzilla,
Scott LaRock is rolling in his grave with his back to the last few youths spewing filth at one another in the YouTube videos linked here. They are definitely not “top of the heap”. What would KRS-One (the Minister of Edutainment) say to all of this? I see the play with DNice who was their DJ from “back in da day” but the rest of the stuff is beneath the quality and depth of posts I read here. Please reconsider the lineup of these video links from Youtube and scrub/delete from the list here and real well in the future too. If you don’t believe me ask Robin. Starburyfan knows what’s good.

I don’t know how to control the links inside of youtube, I just wanted to share the D-nice video with those that may not have heard it, or those who may have missed it since those days. But I hear you Steady. I don’t know what Scott La Rock, KRS, BDP would say, but KRS-One is still doin’ it AFAIK.

DNice touch on the video, wish there was some way to keep him. We already have 4-5 players who can play the 2 spot and 4-5 players who can play the 3 spot.Zeke could have tried to trade some players to keep him, but I don’t think he would have given us anything this year. For those who think there was a chance he could make the 9-10 man rotation,QUESTION: Who would he replace?

  23. JKidd’s ready to play tonight:

The Nets played again without All-Star guard Jason Kidd, who has been nursing a strained lower back. However, Kidd worked out before the game and said that he was ready to play in the Nets’ final preseason game against the New York Knicks Friday night.

  25. A complete breakdown of the trade from the Miami perspective:

The trade provides the Heat short-term and long-term relief on the court, and with its payroll. It gets two primary rotation players in Davis and Blount at the cost of one in Walker. Neither Doleac, a third-string center, nor Simien, an injury-riddled power forward, were likely to play extended minutes for the Heat.

Davis, 28, could potentially start the Nov. 1 opener against Detroit and fill the perimeter scoring void until guard Dwyane Wade returns from knee and shoulder surgeries, likely in late November or early December.

  26. The empty vessel makes the greatest sound.

    Shakespeare

Starbury has put together a beautiful thing here.Venting is cool if you need it and you can’t afford a shrink, but don’t expect people to listen. That’s on you.On the depressing side the papers are making such a big deal out of how Stern definitely has back-burnered the Cablevision mess.So it is probable he back-channeled Charles Dolan, read him the riot act, and that message was passed down the line to Jimmy the D(ope) and Isiah. What Stern did say was the classic rich guy defense.”We’ll see after the appeal process”, that process will go on, and on, until…but wait, somewhere down the line a quiet settlement will probably be signed and the whole thing will kind of go away, maybe.Charles(le magne) doesn’t want Cablevision on the front pages anymore. That kind of news could be very depressing to IT who probably wants to vigorously pursue his appeal. We’ll see.Stern can’t be happy with the Dolans, there is just to much money to be made by all NBA franchises (NBA Europe,NBA China, etc.) for brushfires, like the NBA ref’s debacle, the All Star outrage and Knick’s enquirer episode to be muddying the public’s waters.Stern is a quiet man.Shakespeare would have respected him.
The Net game should be interesting. We’ll see how serious the Nets take it by how much JKidd plays. They’re to smart to burn him out on a meaningless game so close to the beginning of the season.Still, they may want to send a small message,so it should be a very real test when Kidd’s playing.Watch out for Magloire. He’s a very tough, very physical, sometimes Mc Dirty player.People are definitely going to be knocked down in the middle.Magloire is an old school throwback.Nate and Steph will be challenged. He’s also an excellent test for Eddie. This could be his wake-up call.It will be interesting to see if he can stay out of foul trouble with all the physical play.If the Nets stay healthy, especially JKidd, they are the team to beat in the east, not Toronto, because they play better D, they’re bigger up front with Magloire and Krystic and a healthy JKidd is the best guard in the east.We need to at least kick their behinds for a few serious quarters. If we defend well(Eddie?) all things are possible.LGK

  27. After the game against the 76ers, Mardy Collins is back in the fold:

Although Collins is not a natural point guard, he can play the position capably. With Stephon Marbury planning to leave when his contract expires in 2009, Collins could be competing with Robinson to be Marbury’s successor.

“That’s your first reaction when you hear stuff like that — two years, well, get ready,” Collins said. “Whatever he decides to do, I’m ready to step in and try to fill his shoes.”

By BARF on Oct 26, 2007

  28. Howard Beck lost some credibility on that one. “Mardy is not a natural point?” He needs to do his home work.
Mardy played point for his entire college career for John Chaney.
There’s no one on the team that makes the entry pass to the bigs better.
That’s part of Curry’s problem. As a big, you’re at the mercy of the guys making that pass to you in the post.
Marbury sucks at that. He takes five seconds to make the pass bringing the offense to a halt.

    Good lookin out bruh.

I want to trounce our other enemy, JASON KIDD. We need to pound his ass as soon as the ball goes up. We need to let him know the gig is up! We are kings of the f’n hill! He’s held us down long enough. We need to send him packing! I want us to wipe that smirk off Jefferson’s face too! I hope we come out with the same intensity as we did against Boston.

By HarleminMD on Oct 26, 2007

  31. I pretty much echoed Tman without realizing it.

If we believe we’re much better than last year, then all of these games are important. Summer league was important. Every time we wear the uniform, it’s important. We’ve had 4 years of losing. Winning everything matters; we have to change the culture. We need to win each quarter, win with our starters, win with our bench.

By HarleminMD on Oct 26, 2007

  32. thanks stopmikelupica!

    new post comin’ up defenders.

Glad to hear Jason Kidd is playing tonight. I wanna beat that Jason Kidd on the court so badly. You gotta respect and admire what he accomplished, leading FIBA USA team this summer, but when he is a Net with RJ and VC they are just smack talkin’ enemies! Anyone think the Nets may end up moving to Newark if the Brooklyn arena never gets built? They’re hyping that new Prudential Center opening big time this week with the Bon Jovi concerts. It seats 18k. that’s enough for NJ basketball fans.

I hear you DLT Knicks on the cursing, but that SPAM software is really tricky, like Charles Oakley in the 90’s, it blocks everything out. I only want to use it as a last resort, but I will use it if we REALLY need to in the future. But then guys will be like, hey SBFan, what happen to my post!

total minutes for Demetris Nichols in the 5-game Summer League ‘07 plus preseason ‘07: 161

total minutes for Jerome James over last season’s full 82 games, plus preseason ‘07: 273

  34. KG thinks guarding ECity is no walk in the park:

Perkins was back practicing yesterday after three games off for rest and left hamstring rehab, and Garnett was pleased to see him. Asked how he liked playing center in Perkins’ absence, Garnett said, “Horrible. Horrible. But I’ll do whatever Doc (Rivers) wants me to do. I’ve never been opposed to anything. But as much of a mismatch as I try to be, (Knicks center) Eddy Curry was a battle. It’s no cupcake, no cheesecake, no cakewalk into the park when you’re playing against him.

  38. Playoffs or Bust:

Against the 76ers on Wednesday, Curry picked up four fouls - three on the offensive end - in 17 minutes. He continues to be bothered by a sore right shoulder, wearing a brace again yesterday in practice.

“I was a little frustrated,” said Curry, who hopes to shed the brace soon. “I’ve just got to get this thing off my arm. Mentally it does [bother me], just feeling that resistance.”

Stephon Marbury isn’t concerned about his teammate’s recent struggles.

“He’ll be fine,” the point guard said. “He has to continue to find his feel. With Zach [Randolph] it’s different, a different perspective. But it will come.”

By BARF on Oct 26, 2007

  39. Be careful what you all wish for. I don’t want to see the starters get any real burn tonite. There is no need to risk injury. Just look what happened to Chicago in their last game. They now have injuries to Wallace, Noah and Thomas, all in their last preseason game. I have my fingers crossed that we go in to the season hungry and healthy.
