Vote Now: Who’s the Best at Calling Your Knicks Game?

by knicksdefense on October 14, 2007

Which combination do you like to hear when you watch a game? A look at the candidates for your 2007-2008 Knicks TV personalities.

2126_07091.jpg

Mike Breen is your lead play-by-play commentator when it is time to watch a Knicks game.

Trademark expression: “Bang!”

Skinny: he’s more than paid his dues to cover Knicks games, but he often confuses his extra-curricular NBA duties with his ability to call a Knicks game.

waltfrazier.jpg

Legendary Knicks Point Guard Champion turned play-by-play analyst Walt “Clyde” Frazier.

Trademark Expression: “dishing and swishing,” among others.

Skinny: The living legend needs no introduction. #10 continues to be one of the most popular Knicks jerseys at the Garden, with good reason.

gusjohnson.jpg

Radio and TV play-by-play analyst Gus Johnson.

Trademark Expression: “pure!”

Skinny: this guy seems to do it all, he calls college games for CBS, I’ve heard him call baseball games, he’s everywhere at the same time. There may actually be two or more Gus Johnsons walking the earth.

courtesy-alex-houvouras_turner-sports.jpg

Kenny Smith has recently started occasionally calling games for the home team.

Trademark Expression: “gone fishing!”

skinny: The point guard from Queens. I used to remember him for his dunks, then he helped kill the Knicks in the Finals during his tenure with the rockets. Now he is best known for his humor with Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley on the award-winning Inside the NBA.

Interview with Retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanches

In my opinion, Isiaih’s plan from the start was “catastrophically flawed, unrealistically optimistic,” and the administration has not provided the resources necessary for victory, “After more than four years of ineptness, MSG continues its desperate struggle without any concerted effort to devise a strategy that will achieve victory,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez pointed to what he said was “neglect and incompetence at the MSG Knicks Executive level” which has put the Knicks into “an intractable situation” in NY.
Chuck Dolan, he said, has failed its job of oversight.
“Who will demand accountability for the failure of Isiaih’s leadership involved in the management of this team” he said. “They have unquestionably been derelict in the performance of their duty. In my profession, these types of leaders would be immediately relieved or court-martialed.”
Sanchez was pessimistic about the chances of victory in MSG unless there is a major change in commitment.
“Continued manipulations and adjustments to our strategy will not achieve victory,” he said. “The best we can do with this flawed approach is stave off defeat.”
“There is no question New York is living a nightmare with no end in sight,” he said.
The nightmare will not end, he said, until Isiaih’s lust for sex, money, and power in NY ends.
“League efforts to date have been corrupted by partisan politics that have prevented us from devising an effective, executable and supportable strategies,” he said. “Without Chuck Dolan and David Stern’s intervention, Knicks are doomed to fail. There is nothing going on today in New York that would give us hope.”

7 Steady October 14, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Kobe is posturing to your last name JohnQ. (assuming that it is Public of course–Think u got da joke) ;-)
I tell folks that want to read it that the NYK script has already been written and we fans just don’t know it yet. Thus, we blog and entertain one another as “GM wannabes”. It our collective right as fans. :-)

8 JohnQ October 14, 2007 at 12:57 pm

Well then I have a better question. Due to the trial and embarassment to MSG, is this the end of free agents wanting to come to NY during the Dolan/Isaih regime?

9 Steady October 14, 2007 at 12:58 pm

Very useful post in #2 Syd. USEFUL. I think the footage may have been slightly slowed. Hope not. From that short clip, I see AH7 rolling off a pick, doing his patented jab step, and getting good lift for his baseline jumper. USEFUL. He could be featured for 15-20 per game and thus provide 15-20 points coming off the bench with the pressing second unit. Add to this mix the leadership and end of game finish that our boys could not do last year, I go on record here saying that Allan makes the team with D-Nice and others rotating on and off the IR list as was done with Cato and Q-Rich last year. What a great problem to have. And remember Defenders, I’ve said it at the other place: Thou shall not covet thy neighbours’ baby momma; and thou shall not covet thy neighbours prima donna either (a new twist on OTPs).

Defenders,
Did any of you read the coverage on N8 where he was relaying the experience of full court pressing these last few games? Guys would be asking him to back off and give them a chance to bring the ball up court from the inbounds and he would answer them: “Nah”. A relentless, pressing, NASTY second-unit will add a double identity displayed by no other team in the NBA. The leprachauns second unit is NBDL-studs at best; the Sisters–not ready for P Time; Toronto and NJ–maybe a challenge but not insurmountable. Interested to see how our chemistry is diplayed on court.

don’t ask don’t tell and he told on himself!
What a waste of brain power! WEhy this guy comment’s on the Knicks instead of the useless asskicking
of the U.S military in Iraq, he’s definatly playing with his own soldier!

13 JohnQ October 14, 2007 at 1:12 pm

Steady,

Your having a flashback again. H20 WILL NOT SCORE 20 OFF THE BENCH. I am 36 ! Its doesn’t get better w/ age man. By mid season you will see his defensive assignment blow by him and he will not be able to keep up w/ the 2nd unit on O. He is best suited to a half court offense and last time I checked the bench is the running youth core. I will try and reserve judgement until I see him get burn in preseason but I can’t see him making the club.

14 DaVonn J October 14, 2007 at 1:23 pm

Yo, did you guys see this?

“Shawn Marion scored 18 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in 29 minutes, sitting out the fourth quarter along with the other Suns regulars”

How crazy is that?

15 Steady October 14, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Good to reserve judgement JohnQ because you might also change your mind about the good taste of crow the first night Houston does hang 20 on anyone. But of course, we will both be happy then, right? And as for the blow-by comment, the team defense is a concept that negates blow-bys. In the team concept, the blower-by runs into an established man who rolled over to take the charge or a swatting big at the post–E-City, Z-bo, Taz or D-Lee or Jeffries. Of course, those are the best case scenarios. From your worst case scenario, the blow-by guy from the other team scores 2 points. And then my best case scenario has Houston run back to the other side and spot up behind the line to hit a “trey” + 1 (continuation).

Therein lies our differences JohnQ–your NYK cup is half empty and mine runneth over. You may be 36 but are you on the clip posted by Syd in #2?
While browsing my Sunday AM reads, I saw where Hoopsworld.com ran down the articles speculating on the Kobe to NY scenario. Then I saw where the customer concious ex-ballers from the other place, spewing inciteful bunk, speculating about Kobe not wanting to come into the media mess that is MSG. I did not click to read the full article. Could you be getting inspired to pose such “thought-provoking” questions (#8) from reading that other place’s bunk JohnQ? It appears that IT has indicated that he already has an idea about AH7. He says it is a “good idea”. Fans can play the fantasy GMs, it is our collective right. Steady as IT goes. Since I will not make any of the pre-season games, I need to see an unadulturated clip (real time) video clip to confirm my take that he will make the team to play a Kerr-like roll with the NYK this year.

Steady,

too bad wednesday isn’t going to be televised, I too want to see where AH7 is in terms of skill and conditioning. he may be able to play good two man with curry, I recall he could throw an entry pass, something we need on this team consider the quality scoring bigs we have.

maybe nbatv will show the game? i know league pass usually does not cover preseason games…

don’t know how many checked out the link in the post, but here are a few of Clyde’s famous rhymes:

“Out-muscling and out-hustling”

“The Hawks have been persistent, but the Knicks have been resistant”

“Abdur-Rahim with fire and desire”

“Dishing and swishing”

“Houston is the master blaster as he hits from three again.”

“Movin’ and Grovin’!”

“Slicing and Dicing to the hoop!”

“Swooping and Hooping”

“Bounding and Astounding”

“Wheeling and Dealing”

“Driving and Mesmerizing”

“Shaking and Baking”

Steady,

Don’t question my being a fan by classifying me as a glass half empty guy. I’m being a realist. If you want to live in the past, go right ahead but I’d rather this team focus on the future. Why don’t we bring back the whole cast from 99 while we’re at it?

As for the questions I posed earlier. I didn’t take my inspiration from the beat writers just what I inferred from reading the words that came from Kobe. If you were a pro, would you want to go to a team w/ stable management or a team which has had a turnstyle of coaches and bad press. Do you think Kobe missed the article that said Charles may be stepping in for his idiot son (however unlikely or even falsely reported)? They are affected by the press just as well as the public. I’m hoping (praying more like) that more FA’s aren’t turned off by this summer. Thats all.

I wish KB24 in Orange and Blue too, but the media is keeping this ABS vs MSG thing going on, remember KB24 had his own bad press a few years ago. I think this is hurting our chances now.I don’t think the loss of players in trade would stop him. He still would have Zach,Steph,Q, which is better than he has now.We go to battle with the guys we got….still wishing/hoping for RonRon, who I think would be a better fit than KB24 and we give up less.

Oh F**k those SNY guys their knowledge of B-Ball comes from office emails.

23 Post-up Prince October 14, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Ken Berger’s article on Kobe rejecting a trade to the Knicks because
of the MSG “sexual harassment” scandal is another veiled or not so
veiled attempt to embarass Isiah and set him up for a fall. Thus,
if the Knicks fail to trade X (pick a number)players for Kobe, it will be somehow Isiah’s fault or Dolan’s fault.

Where does Berger get his information. I do not believe Kobe has specifically stated he is no longer interested in the Knicks and would reject a trade to because of the current controversy surrounding MSG? Since when has Kobe shied away from controversy? What is Berger’s source? Any team that trades for Kobe would have to deplete considerable resources plus absorbe the 15% bonus Kobe’s contract clause requires–unless waived by the Mamba himself. Dallas certainly has more attractive players than Chicago. But would Gerry Buss want to
trade Kobe to a Western Conference team? Would Dallas give up Nowitzki
and several others to make the salary cap work?

What batch of Knick players would Berger package to attain Kobe? Isiah
will certainly explore the possibility, but if the cost for Kobe is too high, that will not be Isiah’s fault. I would be hesitant to trade either E-City or Z-Bo (plus Lee or Balkman + others) for Kobe before I see how the Eddy-Zach tandem plays together.

As much as I adore the Black Mamba, I would not want to deplete the
team nor pay his contract to aquire Kobe. Isiah has accumulated
a solid, talented group of veterans and young players who are most determined to win this season. If Zeke stands pat going into November,
I will be quite content.

I am hoping that Isiah can withstand the pressure to divert the negative media attention by making a panic trade. Of course such a trade will only bring down more media criticism. The press will attack Isiah no matter what he does. Only winning and winning against the Eastern division elite: Boston, Toronto and New Jersey will modify the
psuco media image of an organization in “disaray.” KFL

24 STATESMAN October 14, 2007 at 5:28 pm

‘Lives’,

I agree w/ your analysis of the sports-writer. I also believe that there is an additional factor that contributes to their animus. Most sports-writer are also “frustrated jock wannabes”. Most attempted to play sports in high school but were not good enough to make the team, so they became team managers or they made the team and rode the bench. I think they resent not only the money that the athletes make, but also the “athleticism” of the professional athlete. I do not Think that it is a coincidence that the most athlectically challenged professional athlete is the one the sports-writerS tend to gravitate toward or offer positive reviews in their writing. They are living vicariously through this athletically challenged professional. This creates the racial sterotyping that is so common in today’s sports’ media. The white athlete is “smart”, “heady”, a “real student of the game”, while the Black athlete “is a born athlete”,”jumps out of the gym”,”he does things you can’t teach”. This reinforces to the media person that a few guys like themselves can make it, and the great athletes were enhanced by some supernatural forces.

‘Lives’, It is clear that you are a marketing guru. You have promised for weeks to drop something that was hot. The village anxiously anticipates your review of the Atlantic Division and whatever else you are bringing to the table, and all we get is another promise. There was a Chicago politician that said “Promises made, Promises kept,”, you obviously don’t agree w/ this slogan. As African would say “Lives the Village is watching”.(LOL)

Prince,

I was thinking the same way. I frequent the boards at realgm and they had that article posted, but the interesting thing is that Berger said “The Knicks are no longer on Kobe’s wish list.” So is he saying we were on his wish list but he tooks us off? And if we we were on such wish list where is the article stating that he said the Knicks are one of the teams on my wish list? Could someone post such article so I can review it because I have yet to see where Kobe had or made a wish list. I like our chances in the East without Kobe Bryant even though I would be estatic to get him if we can keep our core group together to play with him. If we have to sacrafice too much then I wouldn’t do the trade because it would be counter productive to what Isiah has been building. We would have a window of opprotunity but it wouldn’t last as long as this foundation Isiah is building. We would be a lot like the Boston Celtics who gave up a lot of building blocks for aging veterans in hopes of winning in the next two years. But what happens after that two years has passed and your team hasn’t jelled. You go back to square one without any young talent and with no way to move the vets who will become unproductive and washed up. A lot like the Miami Heat who did capitalize on that same type of plan but now have no future unless you count Dorrel Wright and Wayne Simien. I bet you Pat Riley would give up his pinky toe to have Caron Butler and Lamar Odom back right about now. In my eyes Miami and Boston both have bleak years ahead while I think our Knicker Bockers will be on the verge for the next 5 to 8 years if we stay the course.

26 boomann October 14, 2007 at 6:35 pm

And the guy who does that Knick Knack blog said Eddy Curry is ready to go and will be practicig with the rest of the fellas while they get ready to play the Boston Celtics on the 17. Hell Yeah it’s about to be on like Donkey Kong. I don’t know how to post links so I hope it’s ok if I paste the whole article.

Curry and Randolph ready for reunion
While the Knicks were on the practice court this morning, Eddy Curry was being re-evaluated.

He’s officially good to go.

Curry will be on the court alongside Zach Randolph tomorrow morning, which means he’ll get two workouts in before the Knicks play another preseason game. I would guess he’s in the lineup on Wednesday in Boston.

And perhaps on Thursday in New Jersey.

Curry needs as many possessions with Randolph as possible. Now that doesn’t mean they should be playing deep into the fourth quarter of preseason blowouts. They need to get acquainted. Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford also need to figure out how to keep the big men occupied, too.

Don’t be surprised when Curry has offseason surgery to repair the labrum tear.

It’s a fairly common practice when players like Curry are not limited in terms of motion or strength, and he said the other day everything was fine on those fronts.

What’s the big test for the injury, when somebody locks on and swings the centerpiece around?

“That doesn’t normally happen,” Curry said. “I think the big test is going to be when we play Miami, when I’ve gotta hold up Shaq, so we’ll see what happens.”

27 Orange and Blue October 14, 2007 at 7:02 pm

Hello Fixers,

Checked the back and forth about how supposedly far away we are on the Kobe trade radar. Although Kobe is the prime cup of tea and friendly remedy to many who love the mamba, I’m with Post up Prince and Booman on their ops that we shouldn’t sell the barn for Kobe. I kept hearing on the radio for a number of years the catch 22 that the knicks should swallow rebuild and how impossible it is supposed to be in the NYC but just look around and Thomas is about to show on the floor that he has completed a rebuilding project of near mamoth proprtions that as Booman pointed out should be in contention for a half decade or so.

Attached is an article from a Jersey Paper strictly focusing on Zbo and drawing comparisons with him and Reed and discussing how the Zbo ECity tandem might work. Additionally a short brief on some minor knee pains AH7 experienced after this weeks practices. Lastly An article on Thomas’ reluctance to discuss or concern himself with the Kobe Bryant trade rumors.

I know if we don’t make the playoffs this year, KKKandiman, African and States will still be making excuses for Thomas. Basketball is about winning and if you’re team doesn’t win, the GM and or coach goes (even if the team has injuries.)

29 Starburyfan October 14, 2007 at 8:03 pm

You won’t have to worry about what they’ll be saying Drossman, for two reasons:

a) if the Knicks win, you’ll have no reason to blog such predictions.

b) if the Knicks lose early on in November and December, the entire city, led by the New York Media, is going to collapse on the Knicks. I’ve seen the news casters on TV, proclaiming they have no doubt they’ll be able to replace Isiah with their power, if not James Dolan as well.

So you see, you have nothing to worry about, because all contigencies have been covered, in time all of this will come to pass. Either you’re cheering for Knicks, or you aren’t.

thanks for visiting Knicks Defense. “KKK” is that other Knicks blog you visit by the way, not this one. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? Yeah, you do.

LOL! Be quite a read if that were to happen.

Fixers:

Here’s an article from Chicago, regarding a sportwriters take on what it will take to get Kobe and when any trade for Kobe mostly likely occurr– seems to suggest that any trade for Kobe would likely take place next year.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-071013smith,1,2246910.column?coll=cs-bulls-headlines

If a trade for Kobe were to take place in a year, giving the Lakers time to see if they can win in the west with Kobe now and giving Chicago a change to see how far and good they can be sans Kobe, then an improved and playoff competitive Knick team this year should bolster our pitch to lure Kobe.

Any thoughts here?

Wasn’t AH like a smooth field goal delivery system. I love you, so I will not burst your bubble on this one . . . .
but, look at that roster again.

I sorta cheated on this one by checking out the marketing material on MSG, but I did tell you that Jones has a roster spot before IT confirmed it verbally. Who is AH replacing? Anyway, if Steady gets back to 100% (the only perfect human being I know) I will happily, readily and Steadily admit it with John Q Public.

Peaceman comment #30 is no joke. We are walking on the same wavelength. More from me on that issue by the end of the week.

Modi, keep your chin up and that keyboard punching. What you are building is far more powerful and enduring than the junk coming from Lawrence and his band of idiots. I couldn’t believe the ignorance that they allow on TV. Houston should not make a comeback and boycott the Knicks based on religious principles? Zach is outta shape? The Knicks can’t win more than 40? WTF. Just dumb. It just makes me more determined to join the war against the MSM (Mainstream Media).

I want you to start thinking about podcasts where we can have some real intelligent BBall discussions.

Modi, I was doing some serious internet traveling today and I caught provocative website “The Starting Five.” It looks like their material was very good and that they were a group of professional writers interested in providing a documented alternative view of the media. It seems that I caught them on the eve of the website shutting down or the group just breaking up. What happened?

Now dig this. Didn’t I just read Mr. Lawrence state that Kobe is exactly what the Knicks need. He is a fuck*#g liar. He doesn’t believe that. As soon as we get Kobe, he would start talking about Kobe’s rape trial, which seems years away now, doesn’t it? The new story will be Kobe and Zeke go well together considering their treatment of women. Liars. It is not about basketball and it is not about being right. They are trying to exert influence not inform the public.

I could have sworn that I read this article before, but it is dated today. The best thing about it to me is the headline. Check out Isiah Deserves Another Season.

Actually, I am very disappointed by many of these previews. I had never really paid attention before. With almost every reading, I am reminded why. A lot of weak stuff. I’m telling you, that reading the stuff you guys write is far, far more valuable.

I am trying to find time to work on a short joint about why Stern will not punish Zeke. Stern tends to err on the side of do nothing. I know it doesn’t seem like it sometimes, but I have it on very, very good authorities (over an extended period of time) that the NBA sends clean up men, not investigators, to messed up jobs. It’s all about image protection. Most legal stories they just let ride out. Did Kobe get penalized for his trial? Was that elbow suspension a make-up call? I don’t know, but I promise you that Stern will walk softly since the NBA offices have their own employment issues. He might penalize Zeke but my guess is that he will wait for another news story to wipe this one off the air waves before announcing a decision. He knows that New York media folks are idiots, so he won’t be guided by their protests of the moment.

O’k back to States. Man, if I ever make a promise I don’t deliver on, I want to know about it. My goal is always to deliver. Seriously. Ever since I was a little kid forced to defend my big mouth siblings (7 younger jokers), I’ve operated by a no threat rule. Don’t threaten, just act and make contact, then issue a warning. Delivery guaranteed in advance. LOL. I don’t have a “no promise” rule, but I try to make ones I am prepared to deliver. Fifty-one percent of teh time it works. (LOL).

HOT, HOT, HOT. I’m getting HOT, HOT, HOT. . . It’s 96 degrees in the shade. Real Hot. In the Shade. . . . HOT, HOT, HOT.

Lives in NJ, I think that podcasts are a great idea and I should probably learn more about it on the technological end, but it has been something that I’ve been thinking about. If I get it up and running I’ll be calling on all you Knicks “heads”. After spending less than two weeks posting with this crew I’ve concluded that every single regular poster here is 50 times more competent than your average writer at the News or the Post or these moronic shows that exist in these links.

– That article was a 5-star review considering some of the past scathing shit that Tony Meija has written on Isiah. Still a bad article with factual innacuracies.

– The Starting Five is actually my favorite site on the entire web so I am very upset that the crew is separating to their own sites (I don’t know the specific reasons). In many ways i considered COSELLOUT to be the “6th man” to help out with the work that they do. They were kind of like this group right here, but for all sports — not just the Knicks. They truly were an alternative not to be found in mainstream media. A perfect example, how many people actuaslly know about Mark McGwire and Operation Equine in… 1992! Not too many. Google it. …I will be viewing their individual sites and maybe posting some articles as a “guest writer”. This brings up a sore spot with me. There are only a small amount of SERIOUS alternative posters who actually care about minor details like facts and truth, but we do not collaborate very well as a field. Everyone is doing their own thing. Now some folks are happy with “just bloggin”, but I think that the ultimate goal must be to somehow “put a dent in the machine”. I’m convinced that this could only be done through a thoughtful coordinated effort. I haven’t thought it through fully, cuz I’m “just bloggin”

Dave Zirin, an alternative poster pioneer of sorts, was just picked up by Sports Illustrated… which is a GOOD thing as I explain here: http://www.cosellout.com/?p=139. But with his loss and the breakup of the Starting Five, it is a tough month for truth in reporting. I can say that i am more than pleased to have come across the “fixers”, I mean ‘defenders!” (keep it poppin Starburyfan!). Considering a couple of the other Knicks sites I learned about, it is like night and day. I was also impressed with the RealGM folks…

Modi,

The other article I was talking about is in the September issue of GQ. It had more political overtones but it gave one the opportunity to process via the Macro view verse the Micro. If you’re a student of history and I have no doubt that you are, you will see the symmetry between the propoganda Machine and sub-sets create by Hitler in Germany…Quite interesting how the delivery of the message and messages in our country changed immedaitely after World War 2. A topic for another day.

Kamagra bringt dem Korper keine Schaden und es macht nicht suchtig. So, wenn man aufhort die Drogen zu nehmen, kann man sein Sexualleben ohne Medikamente weiter genie?en.
, potenzmittel guenstig online einkaufen rezeptfrei, ceera potenzmittel, viagra online bestellen
Noch ein Vorteil von Kamagra ist es, dass die Arznei wesentlich gunstiger als das originale Viagra von Pfizer ist. Da die Wirkung der beiden Medikamente gleich ist, konnen Sie gut sparen.
